MARCH 25, 2004 - SMACKDOWN!

It's the last SmackDown! of March 2004, and the first night with the brand new Blue Brand roster! Tonight, a triple-threat main event has been signed to determine a #1 contender to John Cena's WWE Title! Plus, the Intercontinental and World Tag Team Titles will be on the line, but first...

...SmackDown! General Manager Stephanie McMahon comes to the ring, holding the WWE Cruiserweight Title. She announces that - due to Billy Kidman's continued backstage issues - she no longer has any faith in her new Cruiserweight Champion to represent the SmackDown! brand with the belt. Therefore, effective immediately, the title is vacant! Starting tonight and continuing until Backlash, the top five contenders for the title will compete in a round-robin format. At Backlash, the two Superstars with the best won-loss records in the series will face off for the vacant title. She announces that the participants will be Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Chavo Guerrero, Christian, and Tajiri!

Our opening contest pits SD newcomers Nova, Rico, and Spike Dudley against Akio, Carlito, and Nunzio in six-man Cruiserweight tag-team action! Unfortunately, EWR has decided that tonight is going to be a dud show. Rico and Akio start the match, and Akio strikes and hits a basement dropkick before tagging in Nunzio, who hits a Stun Gun and a back suplex for two. Tag to Carlito for a double back drop. Spinning back kick from Carlito, but he misses an elbow. Rico hits a legsweep and hot-tags Nova. Nova hits a spin kick, then a kick to the face for two. Dropkick to the knee, then he tags in Spike, who hits a right hand and a slam. Carlito ducks a clothesline and tags Akio back in, who hits a DDT. Spike drags himself to Rico to make the tag. He hits a dropkick and a lightning kick before hitting his spinning leg lariat for the win.

Test makes his SmackDown! debut next against Paul London. They trade punches to start until Test hits a vertical suplex and a slam. He goes for ap iledriver, but London backdrops out of it, then hits a flying axehandle from the second rope. Super Frankensteiner for two. Test hits a clothesline for two, then a DDT for two more. London hits a punch and a dropkick, but Test fights back and lands the Big Boot for the win.

Our first title match of the evening pits the World Tag Team Champions the Dudley Boyz against former WWE Tag Team Champions the Basham Brothers. Bubba slams Doug, then hits a running knee lift and a DVD. Doug manages to tag in Danny, who gets in some punches, but Bubba fights back with a headbutt and tags in D-Von. Double back elbow from the champs, the D-Von powerslams Danny and hits him with a flapjack before tagging Bubba back in for the 3D and the successful title defense.

The Cruiserweight Title Series begins next as Christian takes on Tajiri. Tajiri hits a spin kick to the face, then a running senton for two. Christian blocks a punch and applies an armbar. Gutbuster from Christian gets two, then a long two after a powerbomb. Russian legsweep, but Tajiri turns a sleeper hold into a jawbreaker. Spinning arm drag from Tajiri for two, then a back heel kick off the second rope for two more. Legsweep from Tajiri, then a high dropkick. Christian hits a powerbomb, then a top-rope belly-to-belly to set up the Unprettier for the win! Christian now has a 1-0 record in the series, while Tajiri is 0-1.

The Intercontinental Title is on the line next as new champion Hurricane defends the belt against John Layfield. Layfield starts with strikes, then a bulldog for two. Layfield misses an elbow, and Hurricane responds with strikes and a big backdrop for two. Death Valley Driver gets two more. Hurricane hits a spin kick, but eats a DDT for two. Layfield hits a side suplex for two. Layfield hits a clothesline, then brawls a bit until Hurricane catches him with an elbow and a neckbreaker. Facecrusher from the champ sets up the Shining Wizard for the win. After the match, Layfield attacks Hurricane with punches, then throws him over the ropes to the floor.

Match two in the Cruiserweight Title Series is up next, and it's a family battle pitting Eddie Guerrero against his nephew Chavo! Eddie kicks Chavo in the leg, but misses a clothesline and takes a back heel kick. Chavo hits a tiger suplex for two. Eddie elbows Chavo in the face, then hits a flying neckbreaker and a huracanrana for two. Springboard dropkick from Eddie gets two more, but Chavo backdrops out of a piledriver attempt. Chavo hits a running senton for two. Eddie again hits an elbow to get out of an arm wringer, which sends Chavo to the mat long enough for Eddie to hit the Frogsplash! After the match, he helps his nephew up, and they shake hands! Great match!

One of the highlights of the Draft shows was the match between WWE Champion John Cena and the animal Batista that resulted in Batista coming to SmackDown! Tonight, they go one-on-one again. Cena slams Batista, btu Batista gets his knees up on a splash attempt. Punch to the face, then a DDT for two. Cena hits a big clothesline and a spinebuster for two. DVD for two more. Batista hits a bulldog for two, but as he sets up for the Batista Bomb, Cena backdrops out of it and hits the FU for the win.

And now for our main event, a triple-threat match for a shot at Cena's title at Backlash. It's former champion Brock Lesnar taking on newcomers from RAW, The Rock and Matt Hardy Version 1.0! Lesnar slams Matt, then gives one to Rock. Matt hits Lesnar with a right hand, then hits a snap suplex, only to have Rock plant him with a spinebuster for two. Lesnar slams Rock, but Rock kicks him in the face, then teams with Matt for a double suplex. Matt hits Lesnar with a tornado DDT, but gets slammed by Rock. Hardy hits a rolling kick on Lesnar. Paul Heyman climbs up onto the apron, and Matt gets distracted. Lesnar charges, but Matt dodges, causing Lesnar and Heyman to collide, and Hardy hits the Twist of Fate for the upset win!

The Rock grabs the microphone and goes off on Heyman and Lesnar for costing him the shot at the gold and says that he wants Lesnar at Backlash!

Stephanie McMahon comes on one last time to announce that the match is official. At Backlash, John Cena will defend the WWE Title against Matt Hardy!

Next week, the Cruiserweight Title series will continue as Rey Mysterio will take on Chavo Guerrero and Eddie Guerrero takes on Tajiri! Plus, a huge tag-team main event will pit John Cena and The Rock against Brock Lesnar and Matt Hardy Version 1.0!
