JANUARY 12, 2004 - MONDAY NIGHT RAW

Last night at the Royal Rumble, Shawn Michaels went the distance, lasting 53 minutes and eliminating more superstars than anyone else, and now he will be facing his friend and tag-team partner The Rock at WrestleMania! In tonight's main event, they will hope to add more gold to their collection as they take on the Dudley Boyz for the World Tag Team Titles!

We kick things off with a six-man tag match pitting ECW originals Lance Storm, Nova, and Tommy Dreamer against all three members of La Resistance. All three La Res members dominate Tommy early until he can tag in Storm, who then goes to work on Dupree for a while before tagging Nova in. Dupree makes a desperation tag to Grenier as Nova tags in Dreamer. Tommy hits the Dreamer Driver and is poised to pick up the win until Test hits the ring and lays Dreamer out with a Big Boot! Why did Test just get involved?

Last week, Mickie James made her first WWE appearance, saving Trish Stratus from an assault by Gail Kim. Tonight, she makes her in-ring debut against Gail! Mickie controls the early going until Gail takes to the air. Mickie starts using kicks to take the lead again, eventually finishing the match with a tornado DDT!

Backstage, Shawn Michaels is warming up for tonight's big main event when The Rock approaches. The champ wants to congratulate Shawn for lasting almost an hour in the Rumble and winning it for a third time. He's excited to face him at WrestleMania, because he knows they're going to absolutely electrify the place. But tonight, The Rock's gotta know, is he ready for the Dudley Boyz? "Yeah. I'm ready." And HBK walks off, leaving Rock puzzled.

Last week, Batista assaulted Val Venis, costing him a spot in the Royal Rumble, leading many to speculate that it was he who had been stalking Val for the last month. Tonight, Val gets a shot at the animal, but he should probably have stayed home. Val manages to get in a couple of moves, but the match belonged to Batista, and he finishes him off with a Batista Bomb. Afterwards, Batista continues the assault, just absolutely decimating Val.

Ric Flair is in the ring now with Batista, and he's got a microphone. Yes, it was Batista that's been stalking Val Venis for weeks. And the reason is that Val is representative of everything that's wrong in this business. This is a guy with no ambition. He's been stuck in the midcard for over half a decade, and he doesn't seem to to care about it. But when Flair took over as Batista's manager, he did so on one condition - Batista was never going to settle. This is a monster with a real shot at one day being mentioned with the great ones in the industry, but he has no time for people who are just here to collect a paycheck. Last week, Val was just the first to be taken out on Batista's rise to the top. When he came out to save Val last week, Rico put himself on their radar, and the more Flair thinks about it, they couldn't have asked for a better victim. Rico's biggest accomplishment is... what, exactly? Being on American Gladiators fifteen years ago? Rico Constantino is middle-of-the-road. He always has been, and he always will be. And Batista is going to make him roadkill.

After the break, Rico is out next to take on William Regal. Rico had to have taken that personally, and you can bet he's going to try to prove himself and his new status as a fan-favorite against William Regal. Good solid technical match between the two with Regal using his catch-as-catch-can style and Rico using his feet as weapons. Several near-falls end with Rico hitting his spinning kick to win the match.

Hurricane has proven recently that he is very close to being mentioned with the top names in World Wrestling Entertainment. Tonight, he hopes to solidify that claim by defeating Chris Jericho. Lots of counter-wrestling in this one with several near-falls. In the end, Jericho distracts the referee long enough for Matt Hardy to hit the ring and again take out his rival Hurricane with the Twist of Fate, allowing Jericho to pick up the pin. After the match, they both stomp away on Hurricane.

Booker T is hoping to continue his climb back to relevance tonight against Christian. Pretty so-so match that does get Booker a little bump in overness as he hits the Book End for the win.

After the break, Christian and Chris Jericho decide that they would be best served by pooling their efforts. Jericho came up just short of winning the World Title at Royal Rumble, but together, they can take the World Tag Team Titles off the Dudley Boyz' waists. They've had them so long, they've got tan lines, but... Jericho waits for Christian to come up with a catchy zinger, but the best he can come up with is mumbling something about it being cold in Canada. "That's the best you can come up with?"

Up next it's the Intercontinental Champion Matt Hardy taking on Rob Van Dam in a non-title match. Decent match with a lot of near-falls. RVD is starting to take control when Hurricane comes down to ringside and hangs Matt out to dry on the top rope, allowing RVD to hit the Five-Star Frogsplash for the win! After the match, Hurricane continues to assault Matt, payback for earlier tonight.

And now it's time for our main event! The Dudley Boyz defend the World Tag Team Titles against The New Mega-Powers - Shawn Michaels and the World Champion The Rock! Bubba and Rock start off, and Bubba takes the lead with punches and a slam for two. Tag to D-Von, and they hit a double clothesline for two more. D-Von slams the Rock, but Rock reverses a hiptoss, then slams D-Von for two. Tag to HBK, who hits a seated senton for a long two, then a back suplex. HBK goes for a splash, but D-Von gets his knees up. D-Von slams HBK, then tags in Bubba. Bubba now slams HBK, who tags Rock back in. Rock hits a neckbreaker on Bubba, then signals for the Rock Bottom! He drops down into his crouch, waiting for Bubba to get to his feet... and eats a superkick! Shawn Michaels just laid out the World Champion with Sweet Chin Music! Both Bubba and Rock struggle to their feet, but Rock has been so dazed by SCM that he falls victim to a Bubba Cutter, and the Dudleyz retain!

The Mega-Powers have imploded, just like Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage fifteen years ago! What looked like the beginning of a friendly rivalry between The Rock and Shawn Michaels has turned into anything but. HBK has taken it too far, and you can bet the Great One will be looking for revenge. What's going to happen when the pieces come back together next week on RAW?
