SEPTEMBER 11, 2003 - SmackDown!
The show opens with the APA coming to the ring for a shot at the Basham Brothers' WWE Tag Team Titles. The champs cut off the ring early, keeping Bradshaw isolated with kneelifts, backbreakers, neckbreakers, and a double suplex. Finally, Bradshaw manages to hit a spinebuster and tag in Farooq. Farooq works over Danny Basham until he tags in Doug. Doug hits a DVD for a very close two-count. Faarooq gets set for a big move, but is tripped by Shaniqua! Farooq clutches at his knee after landing awkwardly. The referee sees it and calls for the bell, disqualifying the champs! Afterwards, the APA take some revenge on the Bashams, leaving them laying! After the match, though, Farooq is favoring his knee, and needs to be helped to the back.
Next up, it's the Manbeast Rhyno against Hardcore Holly. There was never much doubt in this one, as Rhyno controlled almost the entire contest before hitting the Gore for a three count. Afterwards, Rhyno continued to make a statement, laying out Holly with a steel chair.
The Cruiserweight Champion Tajiri is up next in a non-title match against Rey Mysterio. This one stole the show, with each man getting in a lot of offense. However, the fun is ruined by Tajiri's Kyo Dai associate Akio, who takes out Rey behind the referee's back allowing a Kick of Death to end it. The double-team is broken up by Billy Kidman who runs in to save his old Filthy Animals tag team partner!
Backstage, Stephanie McMahon announces that - in light of recent events - Eddie Guerrero has been granted a one-on-one match against his nephew Chavo at Unforgiven.
Eddie teams with John Cena to take on Chavo and Sean O'Haire. These are two budding rivalries coming together in a tag team grudge match. Good back-and-forth action to start, with both makeshift teams using good quick-tag strategy. In the end, though, O'Haire again gets the upper hand on Cena, pinning him following the Prophecy!
After the match, Cena gets on the microphone and challenges O'Haire to a one-on-one match at Unforgiven. O'Haire accepts!
Big Show heads to the ring, but he's cut off by the Undertaker. The two brawl until officials can separate them. Those two will meet up later tonight, but they can't wait to get their hands on each other!
Up next is our first MATCH OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE as Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle battle for a spot in the #1 contender match next week. The two trade suplexes to start, before the referee takes a bump. Benoit hits a huge back superplex, but there's no one to count! Angle winds up hitting a mule kick to regain the edge. More suplexes before Benoit winds up hitting a huge powerbomb for two. In the end, though, Angle winds up clamping on the Ankle Lock for the submission victory. After the match, the two show mutual respect by shaking hands.
Angle will face a (literally) huge challenge next week, because his opponent will be the winner of this match - Undertaker vs. Big Show! Pretty sloppy match, unfortunately, because it had potential. In the end, Show winds up removing a turnbuckle cover and driving UT face-first into it, rolling him up for the victory. Show then high-tails it before UT can have his revenge.
Backstage, Paul Heyman is with the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Now the champ knows he'll face either Kurt Angle or the Big Show at Unforgiven, but tonight he's focused on Edge. After the statement Lesnar made last week against he behemoth Rikishi, what chance does Edge have?
Tonight's main event is a non-title match. Lesnar gets off to a hot start, pummeling Edge around the ring. Edge manages to take advantage with a spinebuster, but soon eats a big boot. Edge scores a near-fall after a brutal backbreaker, but in the end, Lesnar's F-5 proved to be too much, and the champ picks up another victory. Afterwards, he continues to pound on Edge, showing his dominance!
The match has been set. Next week, it's Kurt Angle versus Big Show, the winner will face Brock Lesnar at Unforgiven. Lesnar will take on another-top tier non-title opponent when he faces SmackDown's newest main-eventer John Cena. But you can bet that Sean O'Haire will be watching intently. Also, a big cruiserweight tag team match has been set up for next week. Rey Mysterio will team with Billy Kidman against Kyo Dai's Tajiri and Akio. The news on Farooq's knee is not good - he's expected to be out over a year. Bradshaw has vowed revenge on the Bashams, but who will he bring as his partner? Lots of questions still to be answered as we head into Unforgiven, don't miss next week's edition of SmackDown! on UPN!
