Flicking between FIFA 19 and Forza Horizon 4 on a daily basis. Once RDR2 comes out, it will put an end to them for a while.

Fignuts 10-18-2018 02:39 AM

I really want to get back into DB Fighterz.

Fucking red dead though. Already skipping Soul Calibur for the moment. And like, everything else.

Ultra Mantis 10-19-2018 08:53 PM

Finished Ni No Kuni 2. Honestly...

SPOILER: show
really disappointed with it.

Outside of the main two characters, none of the party have any development whatsoever. The main party character designs are lazy, almost every single NPC you can recruit has a better design and some of them even get more screen time. Similar to Octopath there is "party banter", but it occurs in a very small text box on the bottom of the screen that doesn't even give you time to read it. None of the banter is voiced either, which would have been a solution to this problem. In fact, hardly anything in the game is voices. You could probably count the number of voiced scenes on your fingers. One third of the party join and then do absolutely nothing, another joins for absolutely no logical reason after his entire plot arc plays out within one short Skirmish. It's just... off.

Speaking of Skirmishes, they are a decent little mini-game but for some reason there are 50 of them and they never really get any more complex or engaging. The rewards for beating them are virtually non existent. There is really no reason to play them unless you are forced to.

Two of the original continents are also "just there". Autumnia and the Winterlands have minute relevance to the entire game (including optional sidequests) and it just makes the whole world feel a bit empty.

Monster designs are also weak, there are literally 16-20 different monster designs. In an RPG. You see the same thing in hour 1 as you do in hour 100. No variety. The ones they do have are also boring as shit. There's a jellyfish, which I guess is the most interesting one there. Hamster, slime, skeleton, dragon, small dragon, fairy, wolf, bird, pig man, robot, golem, other robot, giant mushroom, yeti, giant eel, mouse soldier. No imagination at all. Huge step down from Ghibli's creature design. The bosses are cool I guess?

The loot system is dreadful, if I'm getting a new sword for every other monster I kill why would I need any of these upgrade materials to upgrade my current sword? It doesn't make any sense. Not that it really matters anyway because the combat system is just mashing a button and hoping you don't get one shotted by an telegraphed attack. There is a dodge and a block button, but everything will either do chip damage or one shot you regardless (I was playing on Hard mode, which isn't actually that hard anyway).

I DO really like the Kingdom building aspect of the game though, it's really the only positive other than the soundtrack and art direction (and Ding Dong Dell) being the only real link between this and Wrath of the White Witch. Unfortunately it all becomes moot in the post game, because there is no actual post game content other than a Mementos / Tartarus style 40 floor dungeon. So you finally get your awesome fully maxed out Kingdom so you can, uh, look at it I guess? I thought it was done better in Atelier Meruru tbh, there it felt like everything was earned. This was more Mother Base style, wait for my free credits to come in while I idle on the throne and my programmed citizens do all the work for me.

Overall it's hard to really recommend, its alright. Maybe it's good. But it's not great, and it does not live up to the first game in any capacity.

Familiars > Higgledies.

Destor 10-19-2018 09:34 PM

I want to read your thoughts so bad but i havent plated it yet. Ibhear the gameplay is good but the story is bad

Ultra Mantis 10-19-2018 09:40 PM

I won't spoil anything but I will say this knowing your stance: NieR Automata has better combat. Much better.

And you know how much you LOVE the Borderlands loot system? Yeah.

Destor 10-19-2018 09:43 PM

Oh :(

Ultra Mantis 10-19-2018 09:46 PM

Yeah :(

The story is absolute lunacy though, as Guycott alluded to earlier, if NNK1 was GTA, this is Saint's Row.

In my head this is somehow a totally viable comparison.

The only thing wrong with it is that there's SO MANY horrible Pearlescents (highest rarity) in 2, like ones that white level gear ridicules it's so bad, like the Tunguska and the Unforgiven. There's several more but those 2 are near the bottom.

Also, E-Tech (magenta) weapons suck on UVHM.

I'll still give it a fair shake but im not excited for it like i should be. Playing DQ11 now and i have a massive backlog so it could be a bit tbh

Ultra Mantis 10-20-2018 04:25 PM

It's not absolutely horrible, there's some fun to be had in there, it's just... disappointing. Maybe even the most disappointing experience I've personally ever had with a game. This or Phantom Pain for sure.

Destor 10-20-2018 04:34 PM

If this tops MGSV for "most underwhelming game of all time" i might openly weep

Ultra Mantis 10-20-2018 06:07 PM

Its hard to measure, Phantom Pain trailer got my hopes sky high but my expectations had already been shattered into a million pieces before I even got to touch it. There was definitely a much steeper curve of "THIS IS GOING TO BE AMAZING" to "Oh" going on in MGSV. NNK2's nation building is more fun than PP's, so there's that.

ClockShot 10-20-2018 06:55 PM

Went and picked up my copy of Soul Calibur 6. I'll mess around with it tomorrow.

ClockShot 10-25-2018 06:17 AM

Soul Calibur 6 is great. Libra of Soul will probably take a good chunk of my life away. So, it's gonna have to wait until I get tired of RDR 2. Which will probably be a long, long time.

Reloaded Spider-Man on the PS4 and played The Heist DLC. Short but sweet. Leaves you on a good cliffhanger.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-25-2018 01:45 PM

Revisiting Fallout: New Vegas at the mo; I'm not quite sure whether I've ever completed the game.

So many factions and endings. What is completion?

Destor 10-25-2018 03:20 PM

doing everything...like always

Sepholio 10-25-2018 03:44 PM

NNK 2 isnt nearly as bad as you make it sound Mantis. Its nowhere near the game the original was but I had a good time with it. I also disagree that the loot system is anything like borderlands.

Disturbed316 10-25-2018 04:39 PM

Red Dead Redemption 2

Emperor Smeat 10-25-2018 07:10 PM

Dark Souls (Switch)

Been interested in years to play one of these games but never felt the impulse to do so until now. Instantly thought of MGS 3 Snake Eater when it came to finding out that it uses the opposite button to confirm stuff.

I read a lot about it being too easy on launch difficuly and everyone was recommending the patched in Hard or Expert. Expert pretty much makes everything one shot you so I went for Hard mode, both up the drop rate as a trade off for being "harder" and as a result you end up never needing to buy or upgrade your gear but this means youre also heavily relying on RNG to get a drop that is actually worth equipping and you really need good gear or you will be getting one shotted anyway or doing chip damage. Combat was really disengaging IMO, not a fan of the system they went with, not sure if I would have enjoyed it better on vanilla.

It's an okay game, it's not great, its not bad but it definitely doesn't hold up to any of the other RPGs I've played over the past two years. It was a personal disappointment to me after the first game, glad you didn't have such a bad experience with it though. Maybe there is hope for Destor after all.

Sepholio 10-25-2018 08:35 PM

I never had to rely on rng for drops in order to survive. I was fine with whatever equipment I had at any time. Im wondering.....did you not engage the higgledy system much? Its not explained very well and I disnt get it for the longest time and ignored it....but good God if you learn what all those different moves they have do and choose the right team they can becime godly. Some of the combos they can unleash can pretty much single handedly destroy even the post game super bosses.

Sepholio 10-25-2018 08:37 PM

For instance, get one higgledy that spawns the cannons, one that summons the knights, and 2 with the me too me too skill. Or sacrifice the cannons for a second one with the Knight summon. The summon happens and one of the others with me too auto copies it and summons a second super soldier. And those knights do massive damage. If You get 4 of them on the battlefield at one time you will be doing MASSIVE damage to anything.

Ultra Mantis 10-25-2018 09:30 PM

Reliance is probably the wrong wording because the only battles I ever struggled with were some of the optional tainted monster quests and dreamer doors, it was more of an annoyance than a progression halter. The Borderlands comparison came from being constantly bombarded with shitty outdated gear for pretty much the whole game.

I used the higgledies a lot early game then end game but not much in between because most battles became trivial. Had the healing one, the gravity bomb guy and the special water / wind attack ones mainly. Ended up just running all four knights because they add more targets to the field and you spend less time healing / reviving your idiot friends.

screech 10-27-2018 10:50 PM

Finished episode 1 of Life is Strange today - bunch of people have told me to get on it.

It lived up to the hype and I'm excited to play the rest.

Tom Guycott 10-28-2018 11:24 PM

Going to try my hand at Friday the 13th. I'm guessing the licencing situation is why it's on sale for six bucks, which seems fair enough for my curiosity. No way in hell I was ever going all in on the full price, even if they did get around to the single player... and I figure I'd better give that a go before I steel my resolve and marry myself to Red Dead.

Ultra Mantis 10-29-2018 07:21 PM

Cant decide what to start next between Divinity 2, Nioh or Witcher 3. Probably Nioh.

Destor 10-29-2018 07:54 PM

Witcher 3 blind???

Fucking do it.

Ultra Mantis 10-29-2018 08:09 PM

I know absolutely nothing about Witcher 3 other than the main guy is called Geralt and everyone says it's amazing. I'll roll with it.

Also based on the cover art, Geralt and the main character of Nioh look EXACTLY the same. Pretty weird.

Destor 10-29-2018 08:44 PM

Witcher 3 is on my short list for best games of this console generation

Pound for pound might be one of the best of all time.

Destor 10-31-2018 01:31 PM

such a huge undertaking to think of a true GOAT game

Destor 10-31-2018 01:31 PM

If we're talking top 50 though yeah for sure.

Frank Drebin 10-31-2018 01:44 PM

I dunno. If I had to pick just shooting from the hip I'd pick it. I mean, what were the complaints about it? Some longish loading times if you die or fast travel? They patched a lot of good shit like the inventory system.

Frank Drebin 10-31-2018 01:46 PM

I guess the big boss might be considered a letdown. It's no fistfight with the Pope from AC2 but that whole world was amazing. Fn played Gwent for hours.

Destor 10-31-2018 01:52 PM

Im not disputing how amazing the game is at all. I just couldnt begin to craft a GOAT argument for any game. Too daunting. All time is too steep of a mountain for me.

Destor 10-31-2018 01:53 PM

and Gwent is everything. I played more gwent than I played the game lol

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-31-2018 07:26 PM

Witcher 3 is fuckin' amazing; make sure you get the Heart of Stone and Blood & Wine dlcs.

Destor 10-31-2018 07:55 PM

Money so well spent i felt undercharged

Ultra Mantis 11-01-2018 01:17 PM

I got the GOTY edition for £12 a few months ago, couldn't pass it up at that price.

Loving it so far, on the second map doing the Baron Robert Baratheon quest. Geralt is a lot cooler than he looks haha, combat is great. Could compare it to a bunch of games, including RDR, but it seems like it does everything better than any of them, at least early on. Going to assume it only gets better.
