Was also revealed there's going to be an assist system from "kameo" fighters, who aren't on the playable roster.
I was kind of hoping the ending of aftermath combined with the "1" indicated that this would be about the very first mortal kombat tournament with the great Kung Lao. Given the long lived nature of some characters you could have returning fighters while expanding on that oft referenced but little known era from the lore. Isn't the case, but I'm still looking forward to where they take things. |
Also lots of speculation that there will be tag mechanics, based on everyone in the trailer appearing in pairs.
Maybe a gameplay trailer at the upcoming sony show. |
So is this new game meant to be the Mortal Kombat version of the Legend of Zelda split timeline for over-arching series storyline?
If its not another retelling of the first tournament or potentially related to it, then they should have called it something else besides MK 1. |
It is a retelling of the first game, difference being its in the new timeline shaped by Liu Kang so things will play out differently.

Hopefully this time the retelling goes along a lot better than what happened with Mortal Kombat 9's story retelling that boiled down to Raiden being a giant dumbass over his continued mistakes and bad decisions throughout it.
If there was a video game version of Sideshow Bob continually stepping on rakes in a field, Raiden in MK9 would be it. |
Will be interesting to see what Raiden plays like now, since he's been reborn as a mortal man, and isn't the God of thunder anymore.

Mechanically speaking there's no reason he can't have the same moveset. Mortal or God all the characters basically have superpowers.

Yeah it was cool to see them but I can't think of a guest character I played as much as the regular cast. Maybe Predator.

I honestly dont think these games compete with one another all that much. The reason MK is a sales juggernaut is because of the chracters, story, and gore. If it happens to be a good fighter thats just a plus. MK is off doing its own thing. If MK competes with any game in sales its Tekken.
In any case their previous sales are the real competition: MK11 - 12 million + Tekken 7 - 10 million + SF 5 - 6 Million + SF 6 i think will easily outsell its predecessor. 5 was a console exclusive and the others werent (although the xbone was a sales failure in its own right so its not much of a factor.) 5 was profitable due to post launch monetizing and i dont think 6 will need it (but it will do it.) All 3 though sold outrageously well and topping their last entries is gojng to be tough as they were all the best selling games of their franchises save SF5 that essentially tied SF2. |

I think Fire God Kang's perfect timeline cannot stop the inevitable. Some kind of timeline fusion (example: Mileena's "disease"). I'll just be happy with the break from the Kombat Kids. This might be the best Johnny yet. |

When this was first rumored and leaked to be happening...figured it was Boone getting pressured by the Discovery folks and it'd be rushed af and suck balls.

I feel like Liu Kang being the villain would be a bit old hat. Both because we've seen evil liu kang, and the guardian of earth get over zealous when raiden did it in past games.
I could see shang being good in this timeline, but liu not wanting to trust him because of their history. |

Id argue we've never really explored an evil lui kang. Theyve set it up and done nothing with it. But i could def see a "pick your relm" scenario where its outworld v earth and the waters are very murky. Really delve into the grey areas a bit.

Gotta be honest it seems pointless to me having an assist system when it's not a tag game. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with MK1 coming out relatively quickly after MK11, as if to catch the anniversary, and they didn't have time to make these extras fully playable.
Even the presentation is less cinematic in the intros, fatalities, and victory animations - all accounting for the assist character, like a tag fighting game would. |

Pretty bare bones (It's a stress test, after all).
4 story tower for single player. I haven't tried online versus yet. Very easy, easy, medium, hard, and very hard are the difficulty modes. 4 playable characters, 3 kameos. |
Kenshi is going to be overplayed. That's for sure....total...badass. more so than before.

I've played as Sub, Kenshi, and Katana. About to play as Kang.
Current thoughts....I like the idea of Kameos but it seems like matches are way too reliant on them. |
Not sure if Jax or Kano is the better Kameo atm. Both seem better than Sonya.

I guess it's going to depend on how your main character plays with which is the better Kameo to tag along, obvi. It's hard to tell with the available fighters.

There seems to be a bug on the game not recognizing fatal blow inputs and sometimes fatalities.
