Black Panther: 7.5/10
|
Groundhog Day 9/10
|
The Shape of Water 7/10
Not quite sure what to make of that film. |
Black Panther-7/10
A marvel movie in look and style. But a but a bit of a different tone. I liked it. Thought the cast was great and enjoyed the backstory behind it. |
Black Panther - 4/5
All the ladies in this were great. |
Wind River - 9/10
A very strong and compelling performance by Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Quality stuff. Aligarh - 7/10 Indie films from the motherland are in a league of their own. |
Small Faces 3/4 - A funnier, more genuine take on lower income Scottish home life in the 90's than Trainspotting. There are even a couple of likeable characters who's flaws make them more accessible rather than repugnant. This is a good counterpoint to the tedium of the excess that an Irvine Welsh story tends to go for.
I picked up a heap of films for dirt cheap the other day too so I finally have a copy of Raging Bull and Angel Heart to get around to. I could never be arsed with either of them but fuck it, for 50p you can't complain. |
Moviepass #43 Annihilation 8.5/10 im gonna go and imagine this as being what a drug trip would be like.
|
Interested in seeing it, Droford. Maybe next week.
|
Annihilation - 10/10
Might be the best science fiction horror film I've seen in a while. Absolutely gorgeous. |
Moviepass #44 Game Night 8/10 very funny
|
Annihilation - 9/10
Good film. Kind of weird. Kind of creepy. Nifty visuals. Natalie Portman is great. |
Someone in my reddit Moviepass group suggested Before I wake if you like annihilation
|
Every Day - 6/10 - Apparently based off a best seller, a teenage girl falls in love with a person who wakes up in a different body every day. A bit odd, but not terrible.
|
Game Night - 7/10
Had a blast. |

Hahaha, a Rhiannon who's a skank, who would've thought? |
Moviepass #45 Lady Bird 7.5/10
|
EveryMan - it was cute. I wish there were more stop-motion movies.
8.5/10 |
Black Panther 7/10
|
Annihilation - 4.5/5
I've seen some strange movies, but this one did a number on my head. Weirdest movie of 2018 for me by far. Alex Garland is on his way. |
Mudbound 8.5/10

Moviepass #46 Death Wish 2018 7/10 I have a spot for the original and Charles Bronson like most people. Bruce Willis did an ok job and it wasn't as bad as i thought it might be but..it was just ok
|
Is was "just ok" but got a 7...
Peoples rating systems are objectively bad. |
How would you rate Droford's rating system?
|
3/10
Objectively flawed. Lacks both direction and consistency. Its started off pretty fair and it gets itself together toward the end but it really falls apart in the middle and loses cohesion to the point it cant recover. Would not recommend. |
Red Sparrow
I'm unsure whether to give it a 7 or a 8 out of ten; I possibly felt that it was being too clever for its own good. But, I enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence showing her boobs. |

Captain Phillips - 4/10 - booooring.
|
Coco - 9.5/10
Really good. One of the most emotional Pixar Films. Gorgeous to look at. |
I'm the only one in the theatre for Red Sparrow on a Friday night (1030 show I know but still..)
Seems bad omen |
Ladybugs 5/10
|
Moviepass #47 Red Sparrow 5/10 boring and about 20 minutes too long. The supposed "torture porn" part seemed way toned down to me for what I heard it was supposed to be like. Not sure adding more would have made it better.

The Squid And The Whale - 2.5/4
As much as I love Jeff Daniels he is handicapped by a script that is so far up it's own cavernous arse that you can still hear the echo from his audition recital when the opening credits roll. I tend to love well scripted movies that explore interpersonal relationships from claustrophobic proximity but this was over cooked and left me with a restless anxiety that only a better film could cure. Nebraska - 4/4 Having watched this immediately after The Squid And The Whale all I can do is point out that this is exactly how a screenplay about relationships, motivations and individuality should be done. It is as close to flawless as film gets and I am man enough to admit that it is above and beyond the possibility of my criticism. Nebraska may the best film I have ever seen. Bruce Dern's quietly passionate stoicism, his furious excitements, delusions and the tragic honesty of his craft appear so natural and truthful that it could almost pass for a documentary. Will Forte is wonderful, and without a trace of exaggeration I think he deserved the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this work. This is the same Will Forte that made The Brothers Solomon and here he is stealing scenes from Stacy Keach and tee'ing up Bruce Dern for the role of his career. There are moments of true Shakespearean tragedy, laugh-til-you-turn-purple lines come and go like stealth missiles and the sheer warmth that radiates from the Nebraska on this screen is an example of its intelligence and heart. I would expect no less from the man responsible for Sideways. As Little Bill says in Unforgiven: "Hell I even thought I was dead, till I found out that I was just in Nebraska." |
Thumbsucker - 4/4
Another perfect triumph in the exploration of interpersonal relationships genre. I don't have the energy to describe how much I loved it because I am on a comedown from it. It's rare that an entire cast gets together and decides to be fucking fantastic but this lot did. I'm not just talking the main cast here either, there are top to bottom credit kudos deserved for this. Benjamin Bratt, Vince Vaughan and Keanu Reeves give three of the better small supporting cameos that excellent films need to have from big stars with small egos. The main cast of D'Onofrio, Swinton and Pucci are all heartwarming, heart breaking and so unstoppably fragile that you yearn to reach out and touch them and hug them. The supporting role Kelli Garner plays tears up the rule book and actually has some substance to it, much like the mother in Nebraska there is a unique style that treads the line between cold logic and cruelty wonderfully without demonising the character one bit. Noah Baumbach should have watched Thumbsucker and Nebraska by now. Let's hope he learns something from them. |
One ball has a good scale
|
He's incredibly consistent and his write ups, whether you agree with them, are consistently well put together and logical.
|
Awww guys

Moviepass #48 Strangers 2 - 4/10 totally different vibe from the first and the girl was so annoying I wanted her to get it so if course she doesn't. Plus they used a bunch of songs inn the movie but not I think we're alone now which was in the trailer..
|
The Strangers: Prey At Night - 5/10
A homage to early slashers. Complete w/ bad acting and a resilient yet ruthless lead villain. Not really a good film (the pool scene is the highlight) but if you dig slashers from the late 70s/early 80s (which I do) you won't have a bad time. |
Was undertaker/kane/bludgeon bros/bray Wyatt in it?
|
All of the above.
|
I've been saying this for years. We need a serial killer that murders people using wrestling moves.
|
What about that fat boy who body slammed a little girl to death years ago?
Surely being tried as an adult means the last decade of his life has been perfect fodder for a serial killer origin montage. |
Jumanji
One watch, everyone knows the rules. 6.5 out of 10. Big breakfast club vibes at the beginning. Very surprised this hasn't been rebooted in a modern setting. The rock was lovely as usual. Karen Gillian with a perfect American accent and her bod is just rocking. Kevin Hart was ok. Jack Black was my least favorite performance out of the main cast. Shame. Overall the movie was fun. Would have loved to have seen tom hanks as the grandpa for the father son combo at the end. Not bad and is a good flick to just watch when notbing else is going on. |
Ezra your review froths my tide

Moviepass #49 Hurricane Heist - 7/10
|
Moviepass #50 Tomb Raider 8/10
|
Ouija: Origin of Evil 8/10
Remember hearing bad things about this. Maybe it was a different one? I know there are like 50 Ouija movies out there now. But I really enjoyed this. Lots of really creepy disturbing imagery which is what I get down with the most in horror movies. |
Love, Simon - 8/10
Reminded me a John Hughes movie. |
@Fignuts I liked Ouija: Origin of Evil too.
|
Yeah, apparently Origin is a prequel, and the first one is the shitty one.
|
Annihilation 8.5/10
I don't know why it did not get a wide cinema release; it is great, though very weird, film. |
Paramounts had a run of Shitty box office bombs and they didn't want to be on the hook for another
|
Tomb Raider
Was good especially the new Croft actress |
Ladybugs - 4/10 creepy stuff these days
Love, Simon - 7/10 has moments, nothing overly new done. Annihilation - 8.6/10 Really surprised me. Some trippy stuff |
What does a movie have to do to get an 8.7?
|
needed more hunks
|
Downsizing - Dog shit movie. Started out good and then became :wtf: and then went totally off the rails. I usually like movies the subvert expectations, but this totally abandoned the satirical and inventive elements in favour of something maudlin and trash. 4/10
Detour (1945) - Good B-Noir... but it was like 68 minutes long and it felt like something was missing. Actress Ann Savage is cool, felt like a parody of a noir femme fatale. Safe in Hell - Good pre-code Hollywood movie. Progressive for the early 30s I guess. It was about a prostitute that thinks she kills her rapist pimp and then hides out on an island and there is a corrupt police captain on the island. Anyway the pimp isn't dead but dies on the island and police captain finds out and says she can avoid the death penalty if she becomes his little slut... she chooses the death penalty but in the process reclaims her independence. I liked this movie. Justice League - I always think I am going to hate these DC movies but they end up being weirdly entertaining. I felt like there was a lot of right decisions being made but everything is so rushed and a lot of the preceding material is flawed that everything feels slightly off, but in a kind of endearing way. The whole movie felt like Superman's CGI upper lip. 6/10 |
agerd@ matt damo gets smol'd

Dunkirk - 4 out of 5
|
The Ritual 8/10
Netflix original movie. Really enjoyed this. Built up suspense really well. Great audio cues combined with a great setting made for a really tense atmosphere. Awesome job building up to the reveal of the monster. Totally worth it too, because it's one of the coolest designs of a horror movie monster ever. |
Annihilation - 8/10. Pretty good. I had never heard of it and watched it at a buddy's place last night and thought it was cool, and kinda trippy.
Tomb Raider - 8/10 as well. It was fun and a good origin/reboot. |
Cardboard Boxer - 2/4
This started surprisingly well and at around the 45 minute mark it devolved into dreadful cliche's, straw grasping emotional peak's and hobo philosophy. Still, it was better than Bumfights. |
Tomb Raider: 8/10 - Much better than I expected. Given enough people see it and it makes money, I could see a second one being made for sure.

I watched three overrated, obviously biased yet immensely entertaining documentaries this week:
All This Mayhem Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief The Cove I tried to watch Mommy Dead And Dearest but it was too bizarre. It made my toes itchy. |
Coco: 6/10
Was told it was a musical. Turned out to be a film about music. Very dissapointed. Not the films fault but my disappointment is what it is |
HAHA! That's what you get for liking musicals!
|
I mean the 3rd act had like 3 numbers...but the characters were aware they were numbers...and the movie made me wait an hour for a number...i dunno.
I cried HARD at the end so its prob an 8/10 |
But i wanted a musical...
|
HAPPY 43,000 POSTS, DESTOR!!
LALALALALALALALLA LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *Musical number ends, takes bow* |
I hope to be dead by 43k

Just to make a liar out of you

|
Watched Fracture with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling.
Its from 2007 but dont recall hearing of it at the time. It was ok, 3 8ut of 5 It could have been better, i expected it to be too. |
Moviepass #51 Unsane 7/10 purely on the story alone because the whole "lets see if I can shoot a movie on an iphone with no budget" idea was a disaster.
|
Unsane?
There's a movie called "Unsane"? |
Unsane in the membrane

The Outsider - 2/5
|
Game Night - 8/10. Beer than I was expecting. It was kinda fun, and worthwhile going to see.
|
Wonder Woman - 4 out of 5
Felt way too much as just DC's take on the first Captain American film and the side kick being the best character prior to the last third of it. Enjoyed the final part of the film more than Captain America and when Wonder Woman actually shines the best because she finally gets the most attention. |
Moviepass #52 Ready Player One - 9.99/10
I can't give it a 10 on principle People are going to want to see it several times just to catch all the references. |
Ready Player One - 7/10
It was cool but the last hour is super cheesy. Great visuals though. |
My Five Wives 2/10 I finished it but boy did it drag. An almost dead Rodney should not be starring in an hour forty minute comedy in the 2000s. A lot of cringey humors and dragged out scenes. Didn't turn it off is about the best compliment I can give it. Few moments catch you off gaurd with a laugh

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle - 8/10
Really fun movie, great cast, great pacing |
Moviepass #53 Tyler Perry's Acrimony - 4/10 there were more people in the theatre for this than when I went to Black Panther. Very stupid movie and the payoff for sitting through an hour and 45 minutes of setup is pitiful. I'm giving it 4 because there were at least a few funny moments that were probably unintentional

Droford sitting in a theater showing a Tyler Perry movie is the other end of the spectrum from a white house intern photo.
|
Imagine him sitting there, giggling and patting a guy to his right whispering "that's reallya guy in a fat suit!"

I took two people I work with since I've blabbed over and over about having 100,000 regal points they got me for 2 free tickets (30,000 points) not that I need free tickets.

Recent Power Rangers flick:6/10
They did a lot of things I thought was really good. The film opened with a digital oner with the camera on a swivel in the cab of a truck for the duration of a high speed pursuit. Really brilliant shot. The charatcers were fleshed out pretty wel really and had good chemestry with one another. They werent afraid to play the theme either which i appreciate. Would have liked it better if they had hit it on the Megazord but i suspect they feared it would be too campy...it ran the risk of coming off that way but the theme plays well imo. However with the exception of the opening chase sequence the action was all shot poorly and even worse was the choreography in general. Everything in the climax felt meaningless for the most part. The plot also suffered. They took the time to develope the Rangers, which was the right choice, but ultimately the actually conflict of the film was underdeveloped and rushed. Again making the final 30 min of the movie feel out of place. Alpha 5 was awful and I will never speak of this again. Ultimately I'd prolly watch #2 for free like I did this one if they ever make it but im def not going to the theaters for this frachise and I'm glad I skipped this one when it was having its run. |
Before I wake 8/10
Another good Netfix original horror movie. Bout a kid whose dreams come to life. So do his nightmares. |
Icarus 10/10. Best documentary I've ever seen.
