I'm really not, Zach. Behind the janky, Dreamcast-era controls lies so much charm. In the sandbox sections, everyone has a schedule to follow bringing the town to life and as you drive along, your character talks to his split personality about 80's movies. It's so delightfully odd, but not in the overt Suda sort of way like No More Heroes, just in the characters. The raincoat killer can't see and you have to hold your breath and every clue you find leads to a cutscene.

I wont spoil it for anyone, but the scene before the final boss is amazing and probably the most emotional one I've seen. It is easily my favourite game this generation. I just totally love it.

Kane Knight 08-24-2011 02:15 PM

EA's Origin digital service contains spyware-like elements after some "digging" in the EULA service terms reveals EA is requiring all users to consent to any data EA wants and EA will be selling the data to third party companies.

The terms include a clause automatically triggering consent to be given once the Origin application is installed and unlike other digital services, the stuff EA is requesting includes non-Origin related information.

While Valve usually informs users what info the company asks for part of its annual status report such as O.S. used and games played, EA's service doesn't specify exactly what will be searched but does state the entire computer of a user will be searched for info.

The terms also hint the only way to opt-out is to completely uninstall the service and lose out on access to any Origin-only or games bought on the service.

Quote:

Once again reminding us all that we really ought to be reading these terms of service that we so often blindly agree to, intrepid users of Origin have discovered within EA's End User License Agreement for the service that, by installing the software on the system and using it, you are giving EA full license to track a number of different things on your computer, including, but not limited to personal information, computer information, application usage, software, software usage, and peripheral hardware usage. The reason for all of this is for the usual "marketing purposes" and "to improve our products and services" nonsense, but the EULA also states that EA will happily sell your information to any third parties it sees fit.

It's fair to point out that Valve's Steam service also does some of the things listed here when you use it. However, the trick is that Steam allows users to opt out of any and all such practices. Origin has no such opt-out feature, and in fact states that you cannot use the service at all unless you agree to their terms.

1) Sony announces it will be rebooting and overhauling the entire Playstation Home program with the main goal to replace the current setup into a more game-like Hub. The majority of non-gaming actitivies are set to be removed while dropping its current status as a hub for other games.

2) Sega reveals Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown will be a download-only title for PSN and XBLA and is set to be released in the summer of 2012. The game is based on last year's arcade version in Japan and will have updated tweaks and balances for the console ports.

3) Warner Bros confirms the Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection will have a August 30 release date for PSN and August 31 date for XBLA and PC. The collection is being sold for $9.99 (800 MS points) and will include onlone play, leaderboards, and achievements/trophies.

Turn 10 announced there will not be any Porsche brand cars in Forza 4 even though Forza 3 was allowed to use the models without the brand name due to EA refusing to allow the studio any access to the brand including models.

Turn 10 had originally planned to use up to 35 cars out of the game's total roster to be from the Porsche brand in the upcoming Forza 4.

According to the car maker, EA owns the digital rights to the brand and can create sub-agreements to license out the brand but it appears EA is refusing any video game to use Porsche as a way to both strengthen their own series of racing games and provide a boost to their non-Need for Speed racing game series such as their Shift series.

Quote:

But this time around, no dice. "In the end, however, EA couldn't see their way towards collaborating again," said Dan Greenawalt, Turn 10 Creative Director

"We've asked our contacts at EA to reconsider their position frequently and regularly over the last 18 months," he added. "We also reached out to various influential people in gaming to lobby on our behalf, and on your behalf, but that was to no avail."

As Greenawalt explained, Turn 10 has the exclusive right to Ferraris on the Xbox and PC, but works with other companies as not to prevent players from being able to drive the cars.
EA tried to get Turn 10 to allow them complete access to the Ferrari brand owned by Turn 10 for their Need for Speed series but the studio rejected the requests from EA after realizing EA was unwilling to return the favor with the Porsche brand. EA had tried to get access to the brand for Need for Speed Hot Pursuit but were unable to get an agreement in time nor does it look any likely an agreement will be reached for their upcoming Need for Speed game either.

As of now both companies appear to be closer to ending their friendly agreement with each other with EA being viewed as the main reason for the potential split.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Sega clarifies rumors of Sonic CD arriving on Xbox Live Arcade by announcing the game itself will not be exclusive to XBLA but also be appearing on PSN, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows 7 phones. The company did state no handheld version will be done neither will it be arriving on WiiWare due to size of the game's file.

2) Star Wars Kinect game and the special edition Xbox 360 has been delayed indefinitely according to Microsoft with the main issue being the game needs a lot more time for development and fixing. The game was originally set to be released this winter but problems during development forced LucasArts to inform Microsoft the need to delay the title.

3) Uber Entertainment announces the sequel to Monday Night Combat being titled as Super Monday Night Combat will be getting the free-to-play treatment on the PC with only microtransactions costing money. The company also announced unlike other shooters using a similar model, there won't be any unfair advantages to those who don't want to spend any money nor any restrictions to force people to eventually pay.

ClockShot 08-25-2011 08:26 PM

Ouch. And that Star Wars Xbox is nice. I'll bet alot of pre-orders are going to get cancelled for that now.

Kane Knight 08-25-2011 08:44 PM

It did look pretty nice. If I needed a new XBox, I might have considered that.

Of course, now it's moot.

Captain of Fun 08-25-2011 11:59 PM

Ugh. Wish they would stop making this crappy kinect game that will undoubtedly bomb horribly, and just finish Battlefront 3.

I don't get it. Unless I'm mistaken, Battlefront is the best selling Star Wars series behind Force Unleashed. Why aren't they pursuing this?

Kalyx triaD 08-26-2011 01:01 AM

I don't think Pandemic is working on the Kinect game, though Free Radical were last working on Battlefront 3. The leaked footage was epic.

Captain of Fun 08-26-2011 05:48 AM

Yes. Dunno why Lucasarts or whoever actually owns the product doesn't just give it to another developer to finish. It's practically finished from what I've heard.

D Mac 08-26-2011 07:26 AM

Dammit I was looking forward to Kinect Star Wars. :(

The answer is no. And I work at a GS. Aside from our in store hype machine that consisted of a few delicious posters for Catherine, and a segment on the big TV talking up the game (all in store, mind you), and our crew being a bunch of geeks who dig this type of title... no.

But a game like <S>TEAM FORTRESS</S> BRINK got all the press in the world. And none of it revealing the fact that it was basically Team Fortress. A lot of disappointed buyers, there.

Yep. You'd think they'd just nix the Kinnect and Star Wars game for the time being. They'll STILL make a tidy profit of the Artoo-sounding system. But, that won't happen.

Well, that's more Gears 3 systems sold.

If you're talking about the fans, then no, I'm not that naive.

But I assume they care about money. As I said, it's one of their top sellers, so not trying to finish it up seems odd to me.

Tommy Gunn 08-26-2011 06:23 PM

It's a shame Lucas Arts stopped making graphic adventures, but then, that is an argument for 10 years ago.

My only hope for them is to either outsource more games to Telltale, or keep doing HD remakes of their classic point and click games.

Airtight Games debuts the first game at PAX from Kim Swift, co-creator of Portal and worked on left 4 Dead series, being titled as Quantum Conundrum.

Quote:

The new title certainly seems to draw a bit of influence from Swift's Portal days, albeit with a new, original art style and an all-new tool: a glove that allows you to shift into multiple different dimensions to solve puzzles contained in each level. The game puts you in the role of a youngster sent off to spend some time with their crazy inventor uncle, Professor Fitz Quadwrangle. Unsurprisingly, your visit is interrupted by something going terribly wrong, and you're forced to navigate his labyrinthine mansion using the glove and its dimension-shifting capabilities.
Each dimension affects how the gameplay of a puzzle works with the one shown in the demo changing the gravity to be 10 times lighter than normal as an extra twist for solving the puzzle.

Square-Enix was announced to be the publisher of the game with a release date expected around early 2012 for PC, PSN, and Xbox Live Arcade.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) According to CNET, Sony is considering and planning to unite all their various digital distribution services from every Sony branch under a brand new and unfied system being called the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN).

2) After recent backlash to the spyware-like terms involving Origin services, EA announces it has revised the EULA terms with the major removal being the ability to sell the information to data companies. EA also clarified and revised what information they would be searching for and now is mostly related to data used for Origin.

3) According to the new voice actor for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 HD remake, the main reason new voice actors were hired was due to the original voice actor for the James character demanded both extra royalties to be applied since the release of the original SH 2 game to go along with extra royalties to produce the new lines in the remake.

They did because they have to. It's that or their new untested, unproven system that is going directly against fucking Steam tanks and costs then millions. It's a little easier to be a dick when you're the only show in town with the NFL license, for example.

Except it's still going against Steam, and the only reason to use it in the first place is that it's compulsory for at least one game and probably more in the future.

Oh, and their games aren't on Steam, so it's that or physical copies, but really. Who would want to get off their bloated ass and buy a game in a store when you can pay the exact same price for a digital copy you don't even own?

On Steam, you do own the games. I don't know about Origin.

Valve stated a long time ago that in the rare occurrence that they go under, they would release a patch to make all your games able to be played without Steam anymore.

People who think physical media is archaic? Gamers who never leave their parents' basements?

You always struck me as a Nintendo apologist. Have you branched out to Steam?

Part of the digital distribution model was supposed to be price, something they really aren't living up to. Yes yes, Steam has sales, not the point. If you think physical media is archaic, you more or less deserve the original Origin terms anyway, since you have traded in your rights of ownership and control for convenience.

You get what you deserve, and a push to digital distribution has led to a loss of control and put fans essentially at the mercy of the developers and distributors to an unprecedented level.

And of course EA did it themselves. That's a fucking retarded point to make, Funk. Nobody would attest otherwise. But then, that changes nothing, especially if Origin is to be made compulsory. Fanboys will not give up Battlefield 3, especially the legions who have built it up as a MW3 killer in their minds.

Fuck, if the past is any sort of indicator, most of the people screaming boycott will buy anyway.

Which is one of the reasons gaming media will become increasingly more restrictive. Along with apologetics like yours.

RoXer 08-27-2011 05:32 PM

Weekend News Edition

Based on a potential leak, Epic Mickey 2 is currently in development after a reader on Destructoid found images and info relating to a potential Epic Mickey project.

From the images leaked, it appears Epic Mickey 2 might include co-op with the 2nd player controlling Oswald and will no longer be a Wii exclusive based on the leaked description involving the potential project.

Quote:

These materials also say that there will be a focus on split-screen two player co-op, with Player One taking control of Mickey Mouse and Player Two taking control of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey will carry the same paint brush and paint thinner that he did the first time around, which can be used to alter the game world, while Oswald will have the ability to fly around like a helicopter and use electricity to fight off or befriend foes/solve puzzles.
The rumor also points out that Warren Spector and the developer studio of the first game, Junction Point Studios, might not be involved with the sequel. Warren Spector confirmed weeks ago his next project is related to making a Duck Tales comic book and potential game.
