It's a form of jealousy. I know that sounds creepily like the "the bullies pick on you because they are hurting inside" schoolyard stuff, and quite conceited, but it truly is that. I rub people the wrong way because I can back up the things I say. Sure, I can be obnoxious and pretentious about tastes -- I'm a nerd discussing wrestling on a forum -- but that goes for most people in the IWC. I mean, look at how pretentious the fucking Young Bucks are.
It's anti-intellectualism. And I'm not even that intellectual, haha. But look again where Ultra Mantis had to go "stop getting mad at people for enjoying what you can't." First of all, I'm not angry. Projecting emotions onto people is one of the dumbest things you can do on the internet. It's possible to be laughing your ass off while simultaneously scorching someone. Maybe I have created a stuck-up persona for myself given my distaste for most things in modern wrestling right now, so I can ride responsibility for that a little, except the opinion of people who need to jump to those conclusions don't really interest enough to placate to their tastes.
Secondly, this isn't about tastes. That's a straw-man and red herring that folks like to use to try and appeal to masses and people's liberties when they've got nothing else. You might as well say "Well, Noid, stop punching kittens in your spare time. Right, guys?! You guys like kittens, right? Well, Noid doesn't like kittens." You can enjoy The Young Bucks, and I have the right to say "They fucking suck." That's what subjective taste means. Objectively, that's where we get to attempt to put our biases aside (obviously not entirely possible) and discuss whether or not they are worth enjoying or whether they do, in fact, suck. This is the same with movies, music or any kind of entertainment, sport or art. Anything can be analyzed. And that's really the problem people have "Stop analyzing so much. It's geeky." I know that. I don't care -- I enjoy it and it helps me get through the shitty periods of wrestling. Ironically, I could say "stop getting mad at me for not liking what you like." It's a completely vacuous and reversible point.
What it comes down to is that people don't like being wrong, and they don't like it being proven to them. That's why there are people with their head in the sand who still think Trump has their best interests at heart. It's why people get mad at "PC" politics without truly knowing what that even means. And it's why people on here HATE it when people can actually back up their points. Look where Ultra Mantis eventually ended up:
"You're an insidious worm. You are unintelligent. Even if you could make me a better person, I'd choose to be worse." That last sentence is especially harrowing if you really think about it. Anyone who spends a minute talking with me can tell that I'm not unintelligent, as they can tell about you, and they can tell about others. That's not a bragging point, as some would have you believe -- it's application of intelligence that is far more important -- and you can't always help how smart you are or aren't. But it's telling that Mantis had to go to that point. I don't want to project, but likely reasons are:
* He's trying to hurt my feelings. That's a bit sad for him. My feelings are quite hard to properly hurt these days. Remember, I am a robot that just hates wrestling now. And it's useless mud-slinging, because I have a pretty healthy confidence in who I am, so a dude I don't particularly trust saying "you're dumb" isn't exactly going to shake my confidence in myself, so much as reaffirm my position that they have nothing left.
* He believes it. This is the more integral possibility. And it's possible. When you believe your own points and people "refuse to see them," no matter how sound their reasoning for dismissing them is presented, you're going to disconnect yourself from them, and that's going to be where you create the sense of an "other" to preserve yourself. Do you really think all those Trump voters think of themselves as "stupid?" Of course not. Ultra Mantis can't reconcile the possibility that he is wrong when presented with an argument that he cannot rebut, so it has to become insidious, sinister, dumb, morally abhorrent, and other synonyms. It's a lot easier to think of me as some sort of monster that prays on people's happiness and whose logic is a warped form of "ignorance" than it is to think "Gee, maybe those Young Bucks kids who fucking suck are weinies?". If he were confident in himself, he could still love them while accepting they are weinies. Humans are good at doing two things. Ironically, the person getting mad because someone enjoys something seems to be Ultra Mantis. If he is mad. I can concede that it's possible he doesn't give a shit, which doesn't bother me in the slightest, because it's not integral to my argument like it is to Ultra Mantis's attack on me.
Dale gets my goat sometime, and I figure that we are entirely different people, but Dale can also converse and be like "lol okay, I've got nothing for that" when he is wrong. Or something along those lines. Dale is a fun kind of clash, and when he actually does piss me off, I can just say "Fuck you, Dale, you dumb piece of shit," he'll call me a baby and stick some trolls on me, and then we're cool by the next thread. You and I have clashed over Alex Riley before, #1, and I've managed to come back later and say that you were completely right. But yes, I must have the giant ego problem and the need to be right all the time.
I think the biggest problem is that people can't formulate their thinking processes and it bothers them. They want to explain why they think The Young Bucks are better than Heath Slater, but they can't contextualize that argument, so they freak out. And, this is a completely childish point, but I did say that Ultra Mantis was dead conversation to me, and then he replied with "Don't talk to me anymore!" Um, yeah -- that was basically my point. So much for those ace comprehension skills, huh?
