Drakul 08-21-2014 01:33 PM

That's quite a claim. I must be missing something.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 02:07 PM

Have you been following the Anita Sarkeesian/Kotaku/SJW/Thunderf00t/MundaneMatt/Jordan Owen stuff? It's a lot of content and back and forth over the last two years that would be tricky to condense into a TLDR version for you. I will try, though.

The Anita name sounds familiar but I can't say I know exactly what's happening.

drave 08-21-2014 02:14 PM

She has been speaking out about how females are portrayed in video games, yadda yadda. She had some pretty harsh things said to her and that is where I stopped.

Who gives a flying fuck. We will still play games and if there is something that turns us away from a title, we will most likely not pick it up and play. Hatred from either side on this is silly and a waste of time.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 02:36 PM

Your apathy is much appreciated.

I just sent Drak a nice long yet short version of what's up and why it's important. If only it was as easy as people not playing what they don't like. It's more than that.

But if you stopped at the tippy top of this, then it's cool. Carry on.

drave 08-21-2014 02:50 PM

I did, know why? It has zero impact on what I choose to and not to play. Never listen to reviews either, or self-righteous fuckwits with blogs that think they are the UBER of all things gaming.

Please though, if it that dire, elaborate.

Drakul 08-21-2014 03:25 PM

I appreciate the message but I only managed read some of it.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 03:36 PM

Take your time, no probs.

You're good, drave, keep doing what you're doing. A customer's right to choose with their wallets is paramount. I am not against that. It's chill. If you're interested enough, look up Jordan Owen's vids on the matter the last year or so.

drave 08-21-2014 03:50 PM

It isn't my wallet that I choose with, I go with what game entices me most or seems to be the most entertaining. If someone wants to get all righteous about the industry, then no one should even purchase consoles due to their being produced mainly from precious minerals mined under slave-like conditions and their manufacturing plants behaving the same way and also using OIL to make said plants run and exploit the workers.

But we will still play.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 04:00 PM

I mean, you are choosing with your money. You either buy it or you don't, right? Or do you get games free?

You also seem to have some issue with people being passionate about the industry, which in turn smells like the old 'it's just games' mindset. This is fine, but if you're not interested in the discussion, I think you can better spend time somewhere else. Not excluding you, just never understood the need to say how uninterested you are in something.

Drakul 08-21-2014 04:07 PM

Gaming still has a lot of growing up to do. It's rife with every negative aspect of society. Sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, stereotypes. Not just the fans but the industry as a whole.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 04:10 PM

That's true. The SJWs aren't the answer, though.

Is that your response to my PM or do you still need time on that. I understand it was long.

Drakul 08-21-2014 04:20 PM

Just a general comment. I have actually been wondering for a while how you feel about the portrayal of black guys in fighting games. Doesn't it bug you that every black guy in a fighting game is either a thug, a boxer or some kind of music/dance man?

If the latest issue of Game Informer is to be believed, then Unity is “new-gen” exclusive and Rogue is “last-gen” exclusive due to the fact that ACR is meant to be a go-between to bridge the story gap between ACIII and AC4: Black Flag.

No. They're cartoon characters made primarily by white nerds and Asians. Seriously, it's whatever. I'm all about the gameplay, unless the designer is earnestly trying to make some kind of point. Most of the time, they aren't.

People who seem to be offended by everything have the critical edge of being able to choose when they are victimized.

Kalyx triaD 08-21-2014 06:49 PM

On the other end, a black character who isn't of those types you mentioned would not make me pick him or play an otherwise shitty fighter. See what I'm sayin?

Drakul 08-21-2014 07:22 PM

I wasn't offended by it, personally. I just noticed that so many black guys in fighting games fit into the same mould and wondered how someone from the same racial background felt about it. Pure curiosity.

I'm not a fan of 1337 5p34|<.

I've tried 6 different gamertags, all taken. I looked a few up and they aren't even active. Likely ones people set up and never used. They should deactivate after X amount of years of continued inactivity. Say, 5 years.

Not a fan of the speak either, but it was the only option at that time for the same reason you are having troubles too.

Weekend News Edition

Take it with a grain of salt since the main source is from reddit but a recent big rumor regarding Assassin's Creed Unity involves the possibility of playing "levels" or side missions with assassins from past games.

The person who's been leaking the stuff is also claiming the combat system is mostly broken at the moment. Same for the online netcode so far.

SPOILER: show
http://i.imgur.com/MWOkMyw.jpg

Quote:

What you are seeing is the structured campaign level list. Each level affords a different location such as Ireland during the Great Famine. Each level then has its own assassin for the area. The levels are wholly coopable from the investigation, to the assassination, to the side missions/diversions.

Players can either join free roam and accompany you into missions, or you can start a mission via matchmaking.

Sepholio 08-24-2014 02:56 AM

I imagine they would def be side missions ala playing as Altair for 5 missions in Revelations. Hope this is true; it would be a great feature imo.

Just seems to be a DDoS at this point. Big whoop.

Fignuts 08-24-2014 01:33 PM

Unity has supposedly been worked on since before AC Revelations. Apparently a bunch of people split off from the studio to make it, while the others put in the usual by the numbers, annual stuff.

For that reason, I'm gonna give Unity a chance when it comes out. Rogue is no doubt same old same old though.

Along with Blizzard's battle.net, Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile, and Riot Games' League of Legends servers. Sony got the double whammy of PSN and SOE (PC side) so nothing from them was running.

President of SOE even had a bomb threat done against him by the same group responsible.

ClockShot 08-24-2014 07:06 PM

Yeah. Kinda figured Sony would have had this sorted out by now.

Now I'm thinking they'll keep it shut down and roll it into their scheduled maintenance they had planned for tomorrow.

According to what I read, another hacker retaliated and posted the IPs of Lizard Group, the group responsible to today's mess.

Doubt they are legit "IPs" unless they are just script kids that don't know wtf they are doing. DDoS is not difficult to generate and there are TONS of programs with pretty GUI's that allow users to execute an attack in a few mouse clicks.

None the less, still on XBL having a good time. Remember, if you pizza when you're supposed to french fry - not gonna have a good time m'kay?

Could just be someone who was pissed off they couldn't play on PSN or other affected services like last time PSN got a major hack attack.

Last time it ended up being a group that splintered away from the larger Annoys group that hacked a lot of places a few years ago. That splinter group was only upset at Sony being attacked and later went after the larger group as well as Nintendo and Microsoft in a "revenge" attack.

Sepholio 08-24-2014 08:36 PM

Not saying it's true because 99.9% likelihood it isn't, but what if it turned out to that Lizard Fags were paid by MS to hack Sony? Would be super hilarious.

That is not entirely true. A DDoS attack from one source is utterly useless. You have to either have a pretty massive botnet for this type of attack or you have to have access to a large portion of the cloud and spin up a bunch of VMs in order to run the attack.

Sure, there are pretty programs that let you launch the attack, but having the necessary infrastructure in place to make the attack succeed is a pain in the ass. Requires either a lot of patience and programming knowledge or a fair bit of money to pay for the required elements.

If it was as easy as you make it sound, every disgruntled script kiddie on the interwebs would be spoofing their IP and routing themselves through a couple dozen proxies and constantly DDoSing everything to hell and the internet would just never work.

Yea seems these hackers are morons, tbh. They bitch about Sony not using more profits to better the PSN experience for it's users. But who are they hurting with their attack? The users they are supposedly 'fighting' for; I could be playing on PSN right now if it wasn't for them and that's not the fault of Sony.

It really is easy. You have a group of like-minded individuals get together, it is not difficult at all to get a sizeable network in place in a 30 day timeframe.

Also, those like minded individuals would clearly already have the knowledge needed or else they wouldn't plan it from the get go. I legit lol'd at using "proxies" for IP spoofing, unless you mean something different than using a service as a proxy.

The biggest issue is so called "script kiddies" not having the required know-how and therefore never really getting "into a group" if you will, that would execute said attacks. DDoS really is entry level hacking, it is far from difficult to achieve. I believe you may underestimate the black hat crowd of the world.

I was referring to spoofing and routing through proxies as 2 separate things. Routing through 'proxies' in order to make it more difficult/take more time to fully trace; spoofing the IP as a last resort so if anyone fully traces the attack they get a bogus IP returned and not a legit one.

I'm aware I'm not using the term proxy correctly; old terminology me and a few of my associates used like 12-13 years ago when we were super awesome script kiddies 4 lyfe. We referred to every single different node we routed through as a proxy; i.e. if we routed through 25 different nodes, we said 25 proxies. Because we were 31337. And stuff.

Botnets were much more difficult back in those days. Spent so much time on mIRC on sorcery.net. We ran a couple respectable DDoS attacks though in the end, and it was worth it to us at the time.

Sepholio 08-24-2014 09:45 PM

Fignuts 08-25-2014 09:23 PM

Bit worried about Mirror's Edge 2 with news that it focuses a lot more on combat. The combat was a legit complaint in the first game, as it broke the flow of the parkour movement and broke your momentum.

Only bright spot is that they said you can chain moves together to bounce from one guy to the next. So if you can take down a group of guys without losing speed, I'd accept that, but I dunno. Need to see it in action.

Kalyx triaD 08-26-2014 01:07 PM

So like an 'auto-lock-chain combo' thing? That can get old quick if not done with a fair degree of freedom to the player. I'd need to see a proof of concept. Worked great in the Arkham series, but in a first person viewpoint while trying maintain a sense of momentum?

I'd be impressed if they nailed it.

But let me say this: This ain't no Tiger Woods. This is a serious golf sim, and it is seriously hard. Hardest golf game I've ever played. Putting makes me want to pull my hair out. However, if you want a serious sim golf experience, look no further. Well worth $35.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/f65JVRLG4HI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The accent in the video is getting a bit of hate. Either because some people believe every character in fiction should be American, her Scottish accent isn't good or Japanese is superior to English for voice acting (Japanese VA sucks. They have, like, 6 possible voices they reuse for every character ever! Old man, young hero, Mr Serious Face McGee, giggling cute schoolgirl, seductive lady, monster/brute. That's it.)

I think the Scottish accent was done very well for a Welsh woman living in America doing a Scottish accent. Yeah, it's goes a bit wonky somtimes but it's much better than any attempted Scottish accent on The Simpsons. Yes, even Groundskeeper Willies accent is awful.

I especially like her maniacal laugh. Sounds just like the Japanese one in the old Darkstalkers games.
Whoever wrote the "Good's not bad but bad is better." line is a genius btw.

I'm used to the Morrigan being portrayed as the Celtic deity of death, not battle/war, but that's probably because that's how she's represented in one of my favorite fantasy series. :p

Drakul 08-28-2014 03:27 AM

She's multiple. War, death and I've blanked on the others but I know there are 4 or 5 things she's said to be the goddess of.

Edit: Looked it up. War, birth, dead, rivers and lakes. She could be more.

Poit 08-28-2014 03:34 AM

Apparently she gets around.

Drakul 08-28-2014 04:02 AM

It was common practice to have a god or goddess associated with multiple things. Most Celtic deities had multiple things. Epona was the goddess of horses, hence Zelda having Links horse be called Epona, but she was the goddess of fertility to.

Regardless, I like your new name. :y:

Danke.

The Pokémon fighting game has an English trailer but says "Planned for arcades in Japan in 2015" and they don't show the Japanese logo. I think it's pretty obvious it's coming to the US. Why else put up an English trailer? Given the arcade scene is, unfortunately, dead outside Japan, I don't think a Wii U version is unlikely.

drave 08-28-2014 06:45 AM

Really wish arcades would make a comeback. They are still popular in some spots on the West Coast, as well as Galloping Ghost right outside Chicago.

I remember the only reason I ever wanted to go to the mall as a kid was for the arcades. Good times.

OssMan 08-28-2014 07:04 AM

Bar in Brooklyn "barcade" very cool bar with lots of old arcade machines, lotta ppl playing them

Couple arcades open on OCNJ boardwalk like "Jilly's" open 24 hours... spent lots of quarters on beating Let's Go Jungle and Let's Go Island

Drakul 08-28-2014 07:17 AM

If I could have my own business, I'd want to have an arcade. There's a vacant place which would be prime spot for one just 5 minutes from my house.

Arcades are completely dead here. A few years ago, I asked my nephew if he knew what an arcade was and he didn't. Kids have no arcade experiences now.

Drakul 08-28-2014 07:21 AM

Official Dr Who skins coming to Minecraft for the 360.

I'm interested in neither but I know it's a big thing to some people.

drave 08-28-2014 09:20 AM

I was never able to get behind Minecraft at all. I can appreciate it for what it is, but yea, just bores me to no end.

Drakul 08-28-2014 09:50 AM

I find it dull aswell. I did get into the XBL indie ripoff, Fortress Craft, though.

Drakul 08-28-2014 10:24 AM

Japan is getting a Nintendo Direct sometime soon. It's 3DS focused but I'm predicting a Smash reveal.

There's one in Glasgow, fucked if I can remember the name and it's Glasgow so there's that downside too.

Yell.com shows one arcade and it's in Lanarkshire.

I'm sure there are more.

Today's News:
1) Ubisoft announces Assassin's Creed Unity's release date has been delayed by 2 weeks and will now be released on the same day as Assassin's Creed Rogue (November 11th).

2) The free game offerings for September's Games with Gold promotion were revealed to be Super Time Force (Xbox One), Crimson Dragon (Xbox One), Monaco: What’s Yours Is Mine (Xbox 360), and Halo: Reach (Xbox 360).

3) According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo is currently in the process of changing their business plans to be more "core" focused in the near future. The reason is due to them believing the Wii era and mobile gaming in general has done enough to expand the gaming audience while Nintendo themselves want to get back to developing more challenging games again.

4) Harmonix reveals their newest game called A City Sleeps will be released this October for Steam and was described as a side-scrolling music-and-rhythm shoot ‘em up.

Dammit Harmonix.

Fignuts 08-28-2014 11:21 PM

Nice. Heard good things about Super Time Force

Sepholio 08-29-2014 08:25 AM

Yay another month of MS dropping the ball on the free games. STF is good, but leaving Crimson Dragon up for another month is weak. Sony can manage 2 new games a month, why can't you MS? HUH?

Fignuts 08-29-2014 08:36 AM

Dude, you're getting free games.

Drakul 08-29-2014 08:38 AM

Nintendo have announced a new 3DS with two sticks, apparently.

Vietnamese Crippler 08-29-2014 11:16 AM

Apparently?

Despite the new additions, the handhelds will be the same size as the ones currently available. A new C-button grants the ability to control games with dual analogue controls, while a micro SD card slot and NFC-technology are also part of the package. Interestingly, this means the planned NFC reading device the company's talked about in relation to its new Amiibo range is likely only relevant for older models.
