Even by Windows 8, no way this will emulated the 360 architecture on a PC without a hardware add-on, unless it dynamically re-compiles. Even then, it would be a stretch.

EA officially purchases PopCap studio and Jeff Green for an initial price $750 million with the potential of becoming $1.3 billion if certain milestones and criteria is reached.

The purchase gives EA access to the Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies IPs along with a huge preexisting network of both games and platforms covering a wide variety of services and consumers. It also reunites the company with their former employee who became the director of social media for PopCap studio.

Quote:

"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA's global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."

"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."
The move is seen as part of EA's stronger push into more of the casual and mobile markets to go along with their current focus on console gaming.

The zombies at PopCap decided to give EA a new greetings card welcoming them as the new bosses and owners of the company.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Blizzard announces starting on Season 3, StarCraft II will now have a new region linking setup to increase the pool of players possible for online matches. Europe will no longer be linked to North America while North America now links up with Latin America and Korea expands to include Taiwan.

2) Even though Bioshock's producer, Ken Levine, appeared in the Wii U press conference at E3 along with other developers, Levine stressed that his studio currently isn't involved in any Wii U projects nor has any slated for the near future.

3) Based on a memo from Gamestop, Sony might be removing another feature from the PS3 with the next reversion of the console to only allow HDMI cables to display HD signals while it was unclear if the Component Out connector will be removed or deactivated. The new models will not come with any HD-capable cables and Gamestop is preparing on increase the amount of HDMI cables available in stock before the new model goes on sale.

2K's boss reveals the real reason why the upcoming XCOM game was changed from a strategy game, like the previous games in the series, to a shooter was due to the company feeling of strategy games no longer being a part of modern gaming.

Before the company had hinted the decision was due to the large gap in years from the previous game and because the reboot was occurring on consoles instead of the more RTS-friendly PC platform. The reboot was also been seen as an attempt to see how popular the XCOM series would be to the current market.

Quote:

ccording to 2K's boss, the reason for this is simple -- strategy games just aren't relevant enough for these modern times.

"The 90s generation of gamers all love XCOM and we own the IP, so we thought okay, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it," said Christoph Hartmann. "But the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing -- strategy games are just not contemporary.

"... That’s what we are trying to do. To renew Xcom but in line with what this generation of gamers want. The team behind it is asking themselves every day: 'Is it true to the values of the franchise?' It’s not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing."
The boss also managed to completely ignore the hype and sales StarCraft II and other big name RTS games still have in the market with even Halo's own RTS game selling about a million copies.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Square-Enix hints it could be bringing Final Fantasy XI to the PS Vita but did stress it would only be a straight port of the game. The idea is to use the PS Vita game as an additional cash boost for their struggling and rapidly cash-eating Final Fantasy XIV MMO game.

2) Metacritic recent investigation into bribed review scores has resulted in the tagging of a bunch of review sources as "corrupt" after it was found out those places indeed accepted cash bribes in return for favorable scores on certain games.

3) Sony announces it is spending $20 million over the next 3 years as part of their current strategy to erase the huge advantage Xbox Live Arcade has in terms of the huge numbers of titles and exclusives available.

Gamasutra: This is one of the first examples we've seen from Capcom of the new strategy of putting existing IP onto Western studios and creating new IP from within the company. Could you talk about that strategy, what it means, and why it's interesting to you as creators.

Dragon's Dogma producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi: For us, we have the two strategies working simultaneously. There is, as you said, giving our famous franchises to other companies to see what they can do. We're always looking for new challenges for us at Capcom, and one of those is creating new IPs -- new franchises that will resonate with the fans. For us, we wanted to try something new, and that's why we developed this title internally.

We look at the other franchises as our children: we grow them, we raise them, and then we send them out to other companies and see what they can do with them. That gives birth to things like the new DMC, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and such.
And it's been a fucking mess so far.

Kinda absurd. To begin with, I was young during the 90's but I don't remember games like XCOM being all that popular. They were popular but I don't think the most popular. XCOM was very unique and customizable and that is why people loved it. Another shooter..yay? :wtf:

It looks like Capcom is trying to be like Nintendo with that strategy but the biggest difference is Nintendo is really good at determining which games work the best with a certain studio and design they want for the game.

Namco got Star Fox due to being good at flying games, Sega got F-Zero due to having experience with racers, Rare used to get the platformers, a few studios are good at doing RPGs, and Retro is great at creating a good tech engine for a game.

XCOM itself might not have been a huge name but RTS were big in the 1990s. The problem with what the boss said is how he suddenly thinks RTS style games are no longer considered "modern" but didn't give any real reason why.

Kalyx triaD 07-14-2011 04:21 PM

We need a new F-Zero.

Emperor Smeat 07-14-2011 04:23 PM

Blame Sega since the team working on the game hasn't been able to convince Sega to green-light the project and Nintendo will only approve it as long as Sega approves.

The division between Team Bondi and Rockstar grows even more after the lead programmer from Team Bondi's L.A. Nore project lashes out in a letter to the IGDA.

The letter both defended Team Bondi's management practices involving the disputed long hours while also lashing out at former employees and Rockstar who are upset at the studio.

Quote:

Recognising that working on the weekend was inevitable, Team Bondi put in place a scheme to (generously) reward employees for their weekend days spent at work. Additionally, in the last 6 months of the project a scheme was put in place to reward employees for staying back late on weeknights, and this resulted in myself and most of my team getting an additional 4 weeks of leave upon completion of L.A. Noire, on top of the weekend working payment.

... I can't say that no-one ever worked 100 hours per week, but those sorts of hours were not encouraged. In fact, if someone on my team was working that hard I would have done my best to stop them.
The letter also questioned the motives of former employees who have ben verbally attacking the company as either an attempt by those former workers to spread lies or even try to get Rockstar to shut down the studio.

Although the letter does not mention why those employees suddenly banded together to lash out at the company nor why Team Bondi decided to leave out almost 100 names from the credits list of LA Noire.

The letter does admit that some mistakes were made as is normal in any game development but also admitted that the studio works hard on finding and listening on ways to improve to both benefit its employees and future projects.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Rockstar is rumored to be working on a huge open world project for the Nintendo DS but unlike their last game on the system, this game is going to be 3D-based instead of 2D-based. The same studio that worked on GTA Chinatown Wars is working on the current project.

2) The lead gameplay designer for Mass Effect 2 and 3 leaves both EA and Bioware to join Riot Games as their new lead designer. This news comes only 24 hours after EA announced the creator of the NBA Jam series, Mark Turmell, has left to join Zynga.

3) Ubisoft is rumored to be the next company to join the Online Pass system with their pass being called "Uplay Passport" and will debut with the Driver: San Francisco game.

Hopefully, Ubisoft can bring back the "always online" function, too. Man, I loved that.

After realizing the complaints and outrage over their decisions concerning Resident Evil Mercenarines on the 3DS, Capcom is currently accepting suggestions and ideas from the fanbase of the series on how to better improve the Resident Evil series.

Some of the earlier suggestions given before the plea did help make some changes such as a return to the survivor horror theme with Revelations and implementing the long requested ability to move while shooting with Racoon City.

Although Capcom did mention that any suggestions and ideas taken would be used more for future Resident Evil games and not primarily for games currently in development.

Quote:

From Capcom's official Resident Evil Facebook page:

Let’s chat about upcoming Resident Evil games. We’ve introduced two new game concepts in Mercenaries and Operation Raccoon City, bringing back classics in RE4 and RE:CV, and going back to survival horror in Revelations. As a fan of Resident Evil, what do you think we’re doing right and what should we be working on?

Quick News Round-Up:

1) After showing no interest in bringing The Last Story over from Japan, Nintendo of America has been granted the trademarks to a potential US version of the game. The recent news of the European branch finishing all the translations for the game appears to be factoring in Nintendo leaning towards releasing the game in the US and Canada.

2) Some bad news concerning the XBLA version of Tribes Ascend as Hi-Rez studio announced the XBLA version of the game has been delayed with all the focus being put on the PC version. Also revealed is the game will now be released first on the PC instead of simultaneously on PC and XBLA.

3) Microsoft and Sony might be doing another joint-project after it was revealed that Microsoft registered both Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com domain names. Rumors are ranging from a new alliance meant to take on Google and/or Apple to a potential co-development of a video game console to something related on the PC market.

Square-Enix reveals Final Fatasy XIII-2 will arrive around January of 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

After listening to complaints both from reviewers and customers, the game will be less linear than FF 13 was and will have a lot less prerendered scenes. The goal is for the gameplay to be done mostly in an open-world real time setup.

To help boost the replay value for the sequel some new features and stuff are being added such as more variety for the mini-games and new gameplay experiences with the New Game+ option.

Even though it was not mentioned by Square-Enix but confirmed by those who have played previous builds of the game, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will have a lot of quick-time events to replace some of the prerendered action sequences.

Square-Enix also revealed the game will be playable at this weekend's Comic-Con expo alongside Deus-Ex: Human Revoltuion as the main games the company is showing off.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Gameloft is currently accused of illegal working practices after the former head of programming reveals how the company would routinely use the 100-hour work week for almost every project and faked deadline dates to get programmers to crunch more without overtime pay. The company even went as far as blaming the former employee as the scapegoat for all the illegal practices committed by the company.

2) Kojima says for the last time he has absolutely no interest in working on another game in the Snatcher series and would have no problem if another studio or company wanted to make a new game. He is willing to go as far as to give away the rights to the IP since he wants nothing to do with the series.

3) Cliff Bleszinski confirms Gears of War 4 will be made after hinting if Gears 3 sells well Epic Games will have no choice but to make another game. He didn't reveal if this means Gears 3 will end in a cliffhanger of if the potential Gears 4 would be a new storyline, spin-off, or prequel.

Its official, Capcom has killed off the development of Mega Man Legends 3 for the 3DS and also killed off ever releasing the completed "prototype" demo for the game as well.

Before the official announcement Capcom not only had delayed the release of the demo but also stopped work on the project while also removing all references of the game from their website.

Quote:

Activision confirms the rumors of a GoldenEye for the Xbox 360 and PS3 is indeed currently in development and it will be called GoldenEye Reloaded.

The game is a straight port of the Wii version with the only confirmed changes being upscaled graphics and the removal of motion controls. Nothing from the single player or multiplayer is being changed nor any special extras to separate it from the Wii version.

Activision will make the announcement official at Comic-Con this weekend alongside with videos of the remake and the possibility of playable demos.

It appears Nintendo had agreed to allow Activision to make a GoldenEye game for other consoles as long as they had the game first and had enough time to sell it as an exclusive. Also assumed is Nintendo still will not allow the N64 classic to be ported in any way to non-Nintendo systems.

More screens from the game are in the 2nd link.

2) Valve reveals they are currently working on a new system for Steam meant to make streaming and downloading faster. So far only HD trailers have been placed on the new system with the company still tweaking stuff before placing games on the faster servers.

3) Sony buys up another studio after announcing Double Eleven has been signed to work exclusively on PlayStation games with the first project being LittleBigPlanet on the PS Vita. Double Eleven was formed last year by former members of Rockstar's Leeds studio.

I'd mock Kalyx here, but for 40 bucks, this one seems fairly reasonable. especially compared to a lot of other capcom offerings of the past.

It's a similar thing to Super Street Fighter 4.

UMvC3:
- 12 new characters
- 8 new stages
- new costumes (probably DLC tho)
- rebalancing
- presumably new moves
- new gameplay and spectator modes

SSF4:
- 10 new characters
- new costumes
- rebalancing
- new moves
- new gameplay and spectator modes

RoXer 07-20-2011 03:01 PM

What new spectator mode was in Super? The slightly refined replay system?
