Rogue one - 8.5/10 loses points for lack of character development, but everything else was good. plus, finally the death star flaw is explained.

Passengers - 8.5/10 - Not usually a huge fan of many outerspace/sci-fi movies, but this one was excellent. Perfect "date movie" with just enough story, comedy, action and romance to appeal to pretty much anybody

And Jennifer Lawrence is hot as shit.....

Star Trek Beyond-7/10

Not as compelling as Into Darkness but it's a fun 2 hour episode. Villain origin was pretty creative and the movie as a whole was a blast.

Don't think it did well box office wise, but I hope it's not the end of this casts run. Really have enjoyed the new movies. Hope there's more.

Frank Drebin 01-12-2017 10:43 PM

It's good. Good n fun. Which is ok I guess...I dunno. I'm not as big of a fan of fast paced never ending action Star Trek than a slower, more thoughtful one.

They still need to do stuff with the Klingons/Romulans though. Have to have a movie centered around them before you can come up with am excuse to involve the Borg.

I liked the 2nd one better. Felt it combined both well. I don't think the same cerebral Star Trek movies will sell this day and age.

Convoluted, too many plots, lousy pacing. I get why it's getting trashed in the reviews and bombed at the box office. But I wanted to give it a chance.

Better off reading the book.

Superman Returns-5/10
A boring, uninventive, suffocated slog that tries too hard to pay homage to the previous films so much that it fails both as an extension of the original 2 it's supposed to follow and a platform for future movies that could've been.

The actors, Routh especially, are so bogged down in trying to playv an actor playing a character that it comes off as a high budget fan film.

The recycling of plot, motives, lines, and assumptions in knowing the source material going ruined this movie.

As much as I disliked Man of Steel, I respect that it very much tried to pave its own way as a new direction for its title character.

Returns just apes the original and isn't even fun in doing so

High would be my bet.

I watched Hackers for the first time last night and it was funny seeing the imaginary visual side of hacking. I guess it was Science Faction if you could call it that.
Kinda reminded me of The Net and Johnny Mnemonic, ExistenZ and all those other dodgy yet awesome techno-net films nobody really admits to watching back then.

I also saw Spotlight and despite it being a very good film, solid performances across the board and very well researched it is no Best Picture. People will forget it existed in a few years and in a few decades it will be on lists of least stand-out Oscar winners ever. That is a big budget daytime movie dressed up.

Lastly The Internet's Own Boy is excellent. I knew next to nothing about Aaron Swartz but this kept me involved all the way through. Give it a go.

I watched "Rising Sun" with Connery and Snipes which was fairly awful, "Down In The Valley" with Ed Norton which was pretty fantastic with a bit of a crap ending and "Deep Blue Sea" with Saffron Burrows and Sam L Jackson because it's just class.

John Wick: Chapter 2 - 10/10

Everything I loved about the first movie was done better in this one. I will say, the first bit of the movie is a little too samey as the first, but after a little bit it definitely feels like its own movie. Loved it.

Last movie I saw OK 6/10

Seanny One Ball 02-10-2017 10:01 PM

Finally sat down and watched The Last Samurai and I have to say it was the tits. It was a little corny how much they played up the "way of the samurai" as a noble thing but the action sequences were tremendous. I even held my breath a few times but that may also be down to the flu. I'm going to go on a Tom Cruise jag and pick up Magnolia and a few others.

Lock Jaw 02-11-2017 12:01 AM

I remember absolutely loving The Last Samurai when I saw it...... and I kept meaning to buy the DVD to watch whenever..... and I think I almost did a few times....... but then for whatever reason I never actually did, and I don't think I have seen it since that first time that I watched it. Which is really weird considering how much I loved it at the time.

Seanny One Ball 02-12-2017 03:51 PM

I watched the documentary The Wolfpack tonight. Wow man... That was something else. Half the time I spent in awe of these guys and how amazingly well adjusted they were considering their awful upbringing and the other half I wanted to shoot their parents for causing their fairly obvious social issues.
It is ultimately a lovely inspiring film but it will piss you off if you have any compassion.

Lock Jaw 02-12-2017 05:53 PM

The LEGO Batman Movie - 8/10. Was enjoyable. Not as good as The LEGO Movie, but some pretty funny moments/lines and also some "poignant" Batman moments.......

WinterDecay 02-13-2017 04:22 AM

John Wick: Chapter 2 - 5/5

SPOILER: show
Hope these guys got Chapter 3 ready to go.

road doggy dogg 02-14-2017 08:14 AM

Hell yeah.

SPOILER: show
I can't imagine that they don't already have plans in mind for a Chapter 3. That ending lends itself to it so well. I got a tooootal Warriors vibe from the last act of the movie, I think it would be perfect if the next (/final?) installment is basically John vs all the hitmen of New York kind of thing.

One of the criticisms I've read of Chapter 2 was that it never really felt like Wick was ever in any danger. Basically too Super Cena. I think they could definitely turn that on its ear by having him constantly be on the run, all the while showing off the same bad-ass gunplay that made the first two movies so fun.

Blue Demon 02-14-2017 07:33 PM

John Wick Ch. 2 5/5 ....it was fun, the first one was good and I thought this one was better!

Lego batman - 7/10

It was very well done. The tone was identical to the first Lego movie which was good but kind of wore on me a bit. Feel like they tried to hammer home the singular message too heavily (but it's mostly a kids movie so understandable). Some of the cameos were great

Storks-3 outta 10

Got outvoted when we went to rent movies at the Redbox. This would have made a great 10 minute Tex Avery short or even a decent 30 minute short film. But stretched out to almost 1 1/2 hours it is just bad.

Inferno-0 outta 10

When they told me they rented Inferno I thought they had gotten the Dario Argento film. Nope it was some Tom Hanks bullshit Davinci Code drama. Hanks sucks in dramas and hasn't been worth watching since the late 80s.

Born Losers-7 outta 10

No this isn't a documentary about Merc's life story. It is the first of the Billy Jack movies. Pretty decent for a late 60s biker movie. But not nearly as good as Billy Jack.

Sepholio 02-17-2017 01:24 AM

Inferno was better than 0 out of 10 but it was objectively the worst da Vinci code film. They should have made a film version of the lost symbol instead.

A Cure For Wellness

7/10

Really wanted this to be a 10/10 because it starts strong. Visually it's really awesome. Gore-wise it's pretty good. Reminded me of early 90s gore. Narratively it stumbles halfway thru and keeps stumbling on and off. It should have been 30 minutes shorter and the story tighter.

Seanny One Ball 02-18-2017 03:53 PM

"The Abyss" gets a near perfect 9/10 for being exhaustingly brilliant. I have never physically held my breath so many times whilst clinging to the edge of my seat before.
The cinematography is out of this world for an 80's film... Probably because this film innovated more or less that entire style of film.
I read a bit of background on this and it sounds like everybody nearly died filming it.
Ed Harris should have won an Oscar for this. I very nearly burst into tears during a particularly emotional scene.

Fuck me I love this film. I watched the Special Edition with an extra 24 minutes restored because if I'm going to watch a movie I want it to be the one the director intended.
Cutting this film is understandable but foolish given that people will sit through a 3 hour film quite contentedly if it is good enough.

Seanny One Ball 02-18-2017 06:27 PM

Kung Fu Hustle 10/10

I have seen it before about twelve years ago and I just watched it again today.
It would be hard to pin this film as any one genre because as far as I can tell it has elements of Kung fu, comedy, romance and it's done in almost a comic book style with cartoon elements thrown in for fun.

This is a perfect film.

The first two Billy jack films,Born Losers and Billy Jack ,are pretty good films. Trial of Billy Jack is ok but 3 hours is way to long for a film.Billy Jack goes to Washington is boring and not worth a watch. But I got the 4 pack for $1.70 at a junkstore. Superman 2, Donner cut-8/10

What a great movie. I'd never seen it. A lot of what I wish was done in Man of Steel with Zod was done here, with Zod getting to earth and feeling his way around before causing havoc. Also liked that we saw them after they escaped.

Chris Reeve is so damn charming in this film. His bumbling self deprecating Clark, heroic then helpless Supes, was all so well done.

The role cast, really, was spot on. Really loved it. Had a very marvel vibe to it in being whimsical but also with high stakes and escalating circumstances.

My only gripe is the ending. Zod and co just kinda die, but the bait and switch was great.

Damian Rey 2.0 02-27-2017 03:11 AM
