I've never understood the logic behind pushing wrestlers from certain ethnic backgrounds to appeal to that audience.

I mean, if you watch WWE, surely you watch it for the sake of guys like John Cena, Roman Reigns, AJ Styles etc... basically, you watch it because it's the WWE, not because of that one dude who's from the same country as you.

And in the case of Jinder Mahal... he's a heel. Are Indian people supposed to "get behind him" or something? He's a bad guy! If Indian people watch WWE, I'm sure they understand how it works. I can understand having someone like Mahal under contract, and perhaps playing up his Nationality when they're overseas, but just seems so illogical to have to do it on home soil to appeal to an audience, who are likely watching regardless of that one dude, anyway.

Ya'mean?

GD 04-20-2017 05:22 PM

I don't think Jinder Mahal is even close to the popularity that Khali enjoyed in India. To be honest, I am a bit intrigued by the formation of the Canadian Indian stable.

Khali videos are the most watched ever on WWE YouTube and people do enjoy seeing people close to them represented on the screen, not just in wrestling, but in other media too.

I just wish they signed Sonjay Duty instead and used him because then I wouldn't be taking a break from WWE.

Lock Jaw 04-20-2017 06:21 PM

I enjoyed Sanjay Dutt a lot "back in the day"..... enjoyed him as "The Guru" and before.....

For some reason liked him a lot less when he went with the bald look (although I guess I haven't seen too much)

Doubt Mahal's push is meant to appease to the Indian market but it was the main reason for Great Khali's pushes because at the time the WWE just entered the Indian market and wanted to take advantage of it. End result was that market becoming their biggest in terms of fans.

Then again appeasing to certain ethnic groups is why the WWF got very popular in the pre-Hogan era and why Bruno Sammartino had lengthy championship reigns.

Sports is similar whenever someone big from an ethnic background breaks a barrier or becomes a huge star since it leads to more of those people becoming interested as both fans and potential future players.

Bret Hart was a bigger start outside of the US than in it. So he had a value in foreign markets, obviously especially Canada. The NBA got lots of traction in China from Yao Ming. It's perfectly reasonable to think markets that are not well represented would be more interested in the product of people who looked like them were featured. Well not many people in India are cut like Jinder, but you know what I mean.

Some great "alright!" moments. A great landmark catchphrase...really hope to see The Pride of Philly saying "Alright!" in the big leagues one day! Good days, good days!

Enjoy!

Sixx 04-20-2017 09:00 PM

that's a catchphrase? next thing you know 'ugh' is gonna be a catchphrase.

It's really weird that something popped up that Hasney, Meatball, Cynick, and I agree on.

Recent issue of the Observer Newsletter put together how deep WWE's efforts to ridicule and bully Mauro were.

Highlights courtsey of r/SquaredCircle:
Quote:

There was an issue early in Mauro's Smackdown arrival. Lawler, used to calling Jim Ross “J.R.,” started calling Ranallo “M.R.,” likely an inside rib since decades earlier, when Lawler and McMahon were growing up it was short for “mental retard.” Of course few would know that since the term went away probably by the 70s. But after a few weeks, it was dropped.

Ranallo, being different, made him the butt of jokes. He was tabbed as weird and the production room was filled with a lot of people who were emotionally still in high school. There would be the jibes about appearance and such, and it was far more than just Layfield.

McMahon was said to be frustrated at Ranallo for his announcing style and adding Tom Phillips to the Smackdown announce team as the fourth member was the first public sign of it.

The “Bring It To The Table,” episode on the WWE Network that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It was noted to us that the subject matter of burying Ranallo was part of that episode and not Layfield going off on his own, and discussed ahead of time as to what should and shouldn’t be said.
In regards to Vince stuff, this supposedly is the reason behind it:

Considering the stuff with JBL didn't really start to escalate till a few months ago, very likely this is when Vince started to use JBL as his mouthpiece to ridicule Mauro on-air.

I bought my house of Hardcore ticket online and I got a confirmation email of payment to Thomas Laughlin..took me a minute to figure out who that was lol.

Super pumped for the show even though I didn't splurge for the $100 meet and greet deal..

It's pretty cool that Dreamer does all of the business for the show.

It all makes sense that Vince wants everyone to be Michael Cole because Cole commentates similarly to how Vince did, aka, pretty terribly (though at least Vince was still entertaining)

When Sonjay cut his hair he went on to vanish and/or just be angry in his matches. He might be on GFW's roster, but idk what that entails other than the house shows they put on at minor league baseball fields.

There should be a wrestling style Quantum Leap show where a wrestler goes back in time to fix all the wrongs throughout the history of wrestling.

#1-norm-fan 04-21-2017 05:49 PM

Each time hoping that his next leap will be the leap home, of course.
