By 2015 all video games will be apart of a series and we'll have no original titles.

What happens when a large contingency of a series' creative team packs up, and two additional teams are brought on to round out the production? Apparently, you get a lot of loose lips. Details of Modern Warfare 3, in development across Infinity Ward, Raven Software, and newcomer Sledgehammer Games, have been leaked with an unusual amount of specificity to Kotaku less than a month before its presumed big reveal at E3.

A lot of that specificity is wasted on spoilers which, in addition to being generally unwanted for those of us who haven't played the game, are about a Call of Duty title meaning they follow multiple characters through multiple elaborate setpieces. Oh, and there's shooting. MW3 begins right where MW2 left off: with the US trying to prevent a Russian invasion. Your roles include a "Russian Federal Protective Services agent, SAS Operative, tank gunner, and AC-130 gunner" as well as some old friends from previous MW games and some new characters, notably "Frost" and "Sandman."

About those setpieces! Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly include 15 missions that take place across "a dozen cities around the world including New York, Paris and London." If some of that selection sounds familiar, that's because this fall's Battlefield 3 will find itself in "Paris, Tehran and New York." Awkward.

But it's not just Manhattan, it's also Brooklyn, Mogadishu, and more, if the list of 20 multiplayer maps is to be believed. (It's unclear if these include maps from the inevitable DLC map packs.) Spec Ops is back as well, with the mission-based co-operative offerings from Modern Warfare 2 accompanied by a new "Survival" mode or, as you're more likely to know it by, Horde mode. The goal: You and your pals will defend yourselves from increasingly difficult waves of enemies. There are seven "Mission" maps and five "Survival" maps listed.

Previous Modern Warfare installments were so shrouded in secrecy, nearly up until the time of release, that it's hard to imagine how such a massive, seemingly coordinated leak took place. Oh, and one last detail: the release date! Kotaku's report pins MW3 for November 8, just a week after Uncharted 3 and a few days before Skyrim.

I thought about it, but it doesn't really give anything away to the storyline of the game. Unless that's an actual mission or something?

MUA2 is really dragging along. Not sure if I'll finish it.

I never did. It got boring fast.

DaveBrawl 05-13-2011 04:02 PM

I played through it a couple times, mainly because my original save file got corrupted 2/3 of the way in on the first time. It's not as good as the first one by any means but I wanted to get all of the achievements.

Hackers have broken into the websites for both Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Tomb Raider, making off with the emails of 25,000 customers who had registered for product updates in the process. The resumes of 350 Eidos Montreal employees might have been compromised too, with the hackers accessing the company's web servers.

"Square Enix can confirm a group of hackers gained access to parts of our Eidosmontreal.com website as well as two of our product sites," Square Enix confirmed in a statement. "We immediately took the sites offline to assess how this had happened and what had been accessed, then took further measures to increase the security of these and all of our websites, before allowing the sites to go live again."

Both Eidosmontreal.com and Deusex.com were affected by the hack and Sophos security consultant Graham Cluley warned that these leaks could cause a number of issues. "With the e-mail there is a danger that gamers could be e-mailed by someone pretending to be from the company who gets them to click on a link or run some malicious software," he told BBC News. "The resumes are a blueprint for identity theft. They have everything that scammers want. The only thing missing is credit card information."

So try and stay vigilant, although Square Enix says that there's no evidence that information has been distributed by the hackers.

[Thanks, Nozza]

Sony's big announcement on Gametrailers early in the morning ended up being news of the sequel to Warhawk on the PS3 called Starhawk.

Similar to Warhawk, the game is an air combat style game but this time more variety of in terms of larger maps, more types of playable vehicles such as mechs, and more action.

Unlike Warhawk, the game will be on disc and not as a PSN title as well as having a single player mode to go along with multiplayer.

No release date was given but Sony did say it should be available at some point in 2012.

I think I can count the number of people who cared about Warhawk on one hand.

Emperor Smeat 05-13-2011 08:49 PM

Yeah the announcement ended up being a bit disappointing because of how much effort Sony did to make it seem like it would be something bigger (ex. countdown clock, lots of hype of it being a big name game, etc).

Square Enix announces as a result of a bad fiscal year for the company (loss of almost $198 million) it has cancelled a lot of unannounced games and projects as part of their new plan to "a tightened selection standard regarding title lineup to strengthen the revenue base of the Company’s digital entertainment segment."

None of the titles cancelled were major or Triple A titles but were seen more as potential money wasters than contributors for the company this upcoming year.

Adding in the effect of the recent earthquake in Japan forcing some Final Fantasy servers to be shut down and the loss of monthly subscriptions also were a factor in the decision.

Sony announced another set of games will be getting the HD collection/remake treatment on the PS3 and this time it will be the God of War games from the PSP series. Included in the collection will be God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Also announced by Sony is the newest firmware update for PSN that requires mandatory password changing in order to use PSN once the service itself goes back online in the near future.

Fignuts 05-14-2011 09:01 PM

Really hope Just Cause 3 wasn't one of those cancelled titles.

Warner Bros Studios announces a new Batman game is being developed by Monolith and unlike previous Batman games, this one is a first person shooter and an online-only game.

The game called Gotham City Impostors will be taking place within the DC Universe and is set as a team-based game of Jokers vs Batmen.

Quote:

In the game, Gotham is being over-run by a group of Joker wannabe hoods known as The Jokerz. In retaliation, a group of well-meaning (perhaps slightly stupid) citizens don the cloak and cowl and unite to take back their city as The Bats. Players will create their character and decide if they want to be a vigilante or a villain.

The game is said to have some crazy costume choices, home made gadgets, a large variety of weapons and some clever twist when it comes to multiplayer (which looks like it could be 4 Vs 4).
As of now the multiplayer is 4v4 but the developer has said their main goal is to increase it to a bigger amount with 16 players per match as a priority. Another report said the studio has no plans of adding in bots or non-online multiplayer features and wants to focus the game solely on online multiplayer.

The game does not have an announced release date but will be available on PSN, XBLA, and PC later in the year.

Square-Enix releases Chrono Trigger today for the Virtual Console on the Wii.

The game originally released on the SNES is now available for 800 Wii Points ($8). This also makes it the 4th time the game has been released on a console (SNES, PS1, DS, and now Wii VC).

Kalyx triaD 05-16-2011 08:52 PM

Terrible idea for a 'Batman' game. The gameplay is proven, I just don't like the license dressing.

Lionhead Studios joins a growing list of studios that hates used games but unlike others, they tried to explain that used games are worse than piracy itself.

The studio blames how used game sales on the Xbox and Xbox 360 hurt them more than the problem of piracy on PC. The studio also gave up trying to protect their games on PC by saying pirates will always find to steal/crack a game and decided to switch their focus on the used game market instead.

Quote:

"Piracy these days on PC is probably less problematic than second-hand sales on the Xbox," commented Fable III lead combat designer Mike West. He added, “"I've been working on PC games for many years and piracy is always a problem. There are a lot of honest people out there as well, and if they like your game they'll buy it.”
The studio also considers PC to be more of a side project with the Xbox 360 as priority when developing games. They even felt every Fable III sale was a "bonus" than due to them working hard on the PC version of the game. Their whole focus for Fable III regarding development, hype, and advertising was on the Xbox 360 version with the PC version seen as a side or after-thought

Quick News round-up:

1) Sonic Generations will be going to the PC and 3DS to go along with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions after Sega leaked those platforms in their financial report.
2) Square-Enix trademarks "SE Masterpieces" as a new product brand with rumors ranging it being used for collection sets to HD remakes of previous games.
3) Mass Effect 2 interactive "Genesis" comic from the PS3 is now available on the Xbox 360. The comic is on sale for 320 MS Points.
4) After apologizing for a lot of things, Sony will not apologize for waiting over a week to inform people their Credit Cards were potentially stolen. Sony also tried to deny they knew of the problem for 9 days and did nothing as saying other companies do the same thing with a few even waiting longer to do something.

Wouldn't be surprised it these assholes found a way to "lock" a disc to a console or some shit. Like when you first play a game a "code" has been recognized and you can't play the game on any other console. I wouldn't put shit like that past them.

G 05-17-2011 08:44 PM

soon they are all going to have codes that lock it to your account, like a mmo

D Mac 05-17-2011 08:55 PM

Or all video games becoming downloads, where you have to buy and download them to your Hard Drive like Games on Demand, and not being able to play them on any other console. And you couldn't resell them obviously.

That wouldn't be too hard to do since a system like that is already in place with downloadable games being tied to an account. Although biggest difference is the downloadable games can be deleted and re-downloaded or even move with a transfer of the account to a new machine.

The way some studios hate used games would make a disc be a one-time sort of deal for a code regardless of the reason.

Drakul 05-18-2011 01:22 AM

A good way to stop the second hand market is to make a game that's good enough to keep. I still have Wind Waker, Double Dash and Melee upstairs because they are so good, I'm keeping them forever even though I've not played them in years. Same as I still have Hitman Blood Money, Fable II, Forza 3 and GTAIV despite being "done" with them for ages. They're so good, I'll keep them incase I want to play them sometime in the future.
I'm sure we all have games we like to hold on to incase we want to play them again.

Do a good job and people wont be so quick to trade in. Churn out a game that's average at best, it'll get traded in pretty quickly.

If it's a collection set, it'll include FFVII. If it's an "HD Remake" thing, they'll do FFVII. There is big money to be made whichever they do as long as they do something with FFVII.

Emperor Smeat 05-18-2011 01:39 AM

Only way FF 7 is ever getting released again is if Sony pays Square-Enix to make a remake/collection since Square has said multiple times it would be costly for them to do it and currently have no interest in just remaking the game.

They put FF 7 on PSN after Sony pleaded with them for a while and they were allowed to just put the old PS1 version up without having to do much work.

The same is true with the past few Dragon Quest games since Nintendo had to fund part of the games just for them to come out on the Nintendo DS and for DQ X to even be made,

The first level is just a tutorial and has to be pretty linear because of it. It opens up after that and gets better with more ways to go about your missions.
