M-A-G 11-14-2021 03:06 PM

Been thinking about that X-Men series though and going through some questions. Is it going to be a direct continuation? Or we ignoring that horribly-animated last season? "Graduation Day" actually hit me in the feels with those last moments even the rest of the episode left a lot to be desired. Will it remain in the nineties or are we bringing in some of the bullshit stories post-turn of the century? How will it look? Is it just a complete reset? What characters that weren't featured in the original run will be presented, if at all? One of the biggest omissions that I can recall was Shadowcat. Like, what the hell? What say you?

Fignuts 11-14-2021 04:15 PM

Since it's specifically called 97', I imagine it will be a direct continuation, with the same jim lee inspired art style. It will likely look a lot cleaner around the edges.

As for content, they could adapt stuff like Fatal Attraction, X-Cutioner's Song, and Onslaught. Maybe even an Age of Apocalypse arc.

Might be cool to see later stories like House of M and Messiah Complex adapted with 90's characters and settings.

Shadowcat's omission was understandable as she really didn't feature at all in x-men comics at the time, outside of Excalibur, which was just barely an x-book. 90's was all about Jubilee.

Destor 11-14-2021 05:36 PM

Jubilee? the vampire? :shifty:

Lock Jaw 11-14-2021 07:03 PM

For style, I imagine it will probably look like the new Animaniacs... you can see the old 90s designs, but the animation is smoother/rounder.

M-A-G 11-14-2021 10:04 PM

They had characters showing up out of context all the time. Psylocke was probably one of the worst cases along with the mutants in Skull Mesa. Shadowcat could've been squeezed in. Hell, Nightcrawler got some love and he was in the same boat as she was. Oh, and Rachel Summers needs to show up, too.

Other question about the series I've been pondering: will Rogue still make me feel funny in my pants? :shifty:

M-A-G 11-15-2021 07:42 AM

One other demand/expectation out of this show: if the first episode doesn't begin with a "PREVIOUSLY...ON X-MEN..." I will lose all faith in humanity.

voices will be key for me. hopefully they aren't too far off.

I will always link the voice of Xavier in this show to the character, even with Patrick Stewart's portrayal. Magneto, Rogue, Wolverine, and Gambit were also tops. Beast's worked for that incarnation of the character, leaning way heavily into the scholarly part instead of the wisecracking, light-hearted aspect.

Jean Grey's X-Gasms.

Choosing not to watch the trailer.

(Although I guess chances are like 100% they play it before Ghostbusters when I go see that)

M-A-G 11-17-2021 12:49 AM

I'm hoping it'll help Marvel end 2021 on a high note.

mitchables 11-17-2021 08:44 PM

out of respect for my boy lock jaw i'm putting this in spoiler tags

SPOILER: show

tinfoil hat areas i guess but i think that is 100% andrew garfield's spidey reaching down to save MJ in this shot:

https://i.imgur.com/nqMKiRf.png

richer blue vs the iron spider's deep navy, plus the whole thing mirrors gwen and will be his chance to 'redeem' himself for not saving gwen

also this isn't reflected in the trailer and we can't go off toys for everything but the gold-lined iron spider suit tom holland's peter is wearing during that fight seemingly doesn't have red fingers

https://i.imgur.com/lFtUXcI.png

however, they are red in the trailer--but i wouldn't be surprised if they changed it for this precise reason. plus lizard is looking in a whole-ass other direction in that 'spidey leaping at all the villains' shot, so the assumption there is garfield's peter has been CGI'd out

i think the richness of the blue is slightly more compelling but either way i will be v surprised if it's not garfield's peter saving MJ

also feel like peter's decision to save MJ over ned could lead to ned's hobgoblin heel turn, or possibly the second green goblin we see in the trailer is a ned from a different universe (or dane dehan's but it doesn't quite look like him) so 'our' ned never actually breaks bad

greatly enjoyed electro getting a brief flash of a comics-accurate headpiece

the prevailing theory is strange is mephisto and thus the sixth of the sinister six but i dunno i've been burned about mephisto before. he def seems 'off' though

anyway, looks pretty good. no way it lives up to the hype but it should be a good time regardless

keen

M-A-G 11-17-2021 11:02 PM

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I'm hoping that it isn't true that we're getting the Garfield and McGuire versions popping up here.

SPOILER: show
so this isn't in the english-language trailer which is why i thought it was just that it looked like lizard was looking in a different direction but the brazilian trailer has a longer version of that leaping shot and uh

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/olcAbyVeiJc" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

lizard is definitely being smacked in the mouth by something there

we might not get maguire (even though we got his villains) but i am fairly certain we'll get garfield

M-A-G 11-18-2021 02:14 AM

Uh, it's clearly Ant-Man or Wasp.

M-A-G 12-22-2021 07:48 PM

I'm only interested in Mordo being back and the Shuma-Gorrath inclusion. OK, if it's the same evil Strange from "What If...?", then I'm on board with that, too. Other than that, fuck this multiverse stuff.

Kalyx triaD 12-22-2021 10:36 PM

Yeah it's quasi-exciting but what it really means is anything goes which will lead to the sloppiness even the DCEU is about to deal with.

Destor 12-22-2021 10:40 PM

multiverse is great. mag is wrong. this is the path to new x-men who have history premade. embrace it.

Kalyx triaD 12-22-2021 11:07 PM

Dafne Keen said several times that she'd be X23/Wolverine in a heartbeat. Despite something like that being right up the princess factory's alley, there's not so much rumblings going on. In fact they ain't say a word about X-Men in a long time.

M-A-G 12-22-2021 11:38 PM

I'd rather they just start from scratch with X-Men if they ever get around to it. There's a lot that needs to be cleansed from my memory regarding the Fox movies, Dark Phoenix in particular.

Blonde Moment 12-23-2021 06:12 AM

Dafne Keen as Wolverine would work for me.

they will not use fox continuity thats certain...except deadpool. this entire phase though is establishing 2 things: the multiverse and magic. my take it 2 universes are going to fold into one another, via Scarlett Witch, and one of those is going to contain mutants. this will bring in the x-men. a new cast but with a story already in progress. a seasoned team thats been at it some years and giving an explination as to why theres suddenly mutants everywhere.

Rammsteinmad 12-23-2021 06:35 AM

I read somewhere online that apparently they were gonna try and top Spider-Man: No Way Home with all the multiverse madness in this film. Rumours were that Hugh Jackson and Patrick Stewart were both going to make cameos as Wolverine/Professor X.

If that were the case, they could have shit loads of fan-service fun with this movie.

This would be great.

M-A-G 12-25-2021 10:38 PM

Things I'd want done properly in any new X-Men movies:

A proper adaptation of Psylocke. She's a fucking good guy, for fuck's sake.
A proper Rogue and Gambit romance.
A story surrounding Genosha. That pitiful piece of shit in Dark Phoenix was a fucking joke.
Polaris and Havok done right.
Sinister.
Apocalypse done right.

Destor 12-26-2021 12:04 AM

i want rogue to ge her powers from captain marvel. fully strip danvers and really explore the story telling of that. theres a lot of legs there if done well.

Kalyx triaD 12-26-2021 08:20 AM

I want Rogue to be black.

Fignuts 12-26-2021 08:54 AM

I've thought for a while that I'd like to see them try something different rather than the same x-men story we've seen already. Adapt the Wolverine and the X-men books where prof. X and Jean Grey are dead, and wolverine and kitty pride have taken over the school as headmaster. Great way to introduce some of the cooler new characters they've come out with over the years as students, while having some old favorites as teachers.

Plus that was just a really fun book that would work great on screen.

Blonde Moment 12-26-2021 09:13 AM

maybe a variation on X men: Evolution. Its going to be hard because so much of the good stuff does not translate very well from paper to film and might work better on Disney+ with 10-episode arcs cumulating in a movie every 2 years to wrap things up and start another arc. First 10-20 episodes dealing with Krakoa (rehashing Giant size X men) with movie ending with the birth of the Phoenix

I just think Rogue would be a reasonable race swap since I always got a 'black woman vibe' from her. The exaggerated swagger of a black woman.

Blonde Moment 12-26-2021 10:54 AM

Hell if she was younger i could go with her being played by Rutina Wesley

Kalyx triaD 12-26-2021 12:32 PM

I mean, she can be younger. But depending on much of the dynamics they're gonna retain Gambit would similarly need to be younger I guess.

Then again if they're launching a new sub-franchise it would be best to go with a generally younger cast all around except for ProfX and Mags.

Mustafa Shakir for Bishop pls.

Would also be down for a Genosha story. I think X-Men 97 touched on it here and there, but not to the full extent.

It was a HUGE society.... like tens of millions of mutants living in their own "society" or whatever, I thought. Could be interesting to see it from inception to destructive end.

M-A-G 12-27-2021 09:17 AM

Just from a visual perspective there's a lot you can do with Genosha. Bringing to life this weird mix of a utopia and a dystopia and exploring the ins and outs of it would be interesting. The political and social themes are also there for the pickings. I couldn't believe it when I learned that the island Magneto and his followers inhabited in Dark Phoenix was supposed to be Genosha. Like, seriously? A bunch of fucking huts in the middle of nowhere was the best he could do?

I find it weird that she'd idolize Captain Marvel when she has spent most of her time off planet and relatively unknown. Unless she did get that famous from her one time with The Avengers or was on Earth for longer than previously revealed during the 5 year gap.

It could just be a thing of Kamala gravitating more towards Carol a la Kate Bishop to Clint Barton. Remember, Kamala is a super geek. Like, ridiculously super geek. It's not outside the realm of possibility for her to be a fan especially considering we don't know what those five years were like or what Carol's post-Endgame career entailed and how far apart this story is from all of that. Carol could have been shoved into the limelight to fill the Black Widow gap and if that's the case, I'm hoping that and how Carol handles that is something that gets explored in her second movie. I'm getting ahead of myself, though. Let's just see how this plays out.

I'm looking at that line-up to see where they could possibly fit in. Maybe in The Marvels, the Fantastic Four, and the Kang Dynasty but that's a stretch.

I don't think I could ever get burnt out on this franchise. It's like I'm a kid again. I'm thankful this stuff is happening now instead of when I actually was a kid because there's no chance in hell my parents would be taking me to see any of it.

Fignuts 07-28-2022 08:51 PM

Gaimen and Buckingham finally finishing theirSilver Age arc on Miracleman, with the first issue coming in october.

It's being published by marvel. Makes me kind of worried about it, given how overly PC and "woke" they've been.

Destor 07-28-2022 08:56 PM

Is this allen moore miracle man?

Fignuts 07-28-2022 09:28 PM

Yeah. Gaimen took over after issue 16, and then the whole thing ended on a big cliffhanger in issue 24 and was never finished.

Destor 07-28-2022 09:43 PM

Allan Moore isnt a writer you simply follow and the current marvel writing staff...well there's a reason manga sales in the US blow them out of the water. Demon slayer is moving 25 million units while comics as a whole are moving 15 mil. Its pretty telling.

Fignuts 07-28-2022 10:48 PM

Neil Gaimen isn't just any writer though. He did a very good job taking over the book. Some people even enjoy his issues a bit more. Moore was really laying the prose on thick in those books.

Destor 07-28-2022 11:01 PM

He was still adapting to the medium and developing his style. Which says something because Marvelman/Miracleman is still better than a lot of stuff coming out today. I'll have to check out the final product once they have them released as a set.

Fignuts 07-28-2022 11:10 PM

Oh most definitely. Moore's run on miracle man changed the industry. Just saying, if theres anyone who's on the same level it's Gaimen.

Fignuts 07-28-2022 11:12 PM

Fuck, I just read they're also planning on bringing Miracleman into the mainline marvel universe.

That could be really bad. Cause if he's going to be a part of the pg-13 universe, will they really give Gaimen the freedom to continue the book with the same tone and content it had before?

Fignuts 07-28-2022 11:14 PM

Also seems super redundant and unnecessary. They already have the sentry who has the same powers and even almost the same backstory.

Destor 07-28-2022 11:20 PM

Yeeaaahhhhh most of mores works is best left in its own corner...but maybe it can work?

Obviously Deadpool is not currently in the mainline universe but that will likely be changing in this film so its all well and good long term im just very ready to move forward with the X-Men IP.

Its a slight shame that Jackman is returning post Logan. It was a great send off for his version.

but the movie will take place pre-Logan maaaaaaaaaaan. "Time" in the MCU is a joke anyway.
