They will wouldn't have lost to Dallas had they "lost" this game. Why are you so obsessed with thinking pre-season games matter except for the Coaches to evaluate talent?

You tried to make "Grapefruit League Champion" a thing this year.

James Steele 08-17-2014 07:17 AM

I feel like eventually, the ridiculous penalties and overall direction of the NFL will begin to hurt its bottom line. There will soon be a generation that doesn't care about the NFL all that much. Still make 100s of millions instead of billions.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-17-2014 07:27 AM

They are going in the direction of the Arena Football League with these defensive penalties.

Seems they want to kill the idea that defense wins championships.

Evil Vito 08-17-2014 10:39 AM

Legit glad to see Michael Sam playing well. The best case scenario was always that he played well and made the team based on his on-field performance. If he had a terrible preseason you know it would have been a shitstorm whether they decided to keep him or not.

Ravens are 5-0 vs the Cowboys, Only other team with an undefeated record vs another team is the Texans who are 8-0 vsthe Dolphins, they are also 3-0 vs bears.

Expansion teams are undefeated against teams they only face every once in awhile?

How many of your games in that list are pre-season?

Just stop....

Evil Vito 08-23-2014 10:49 AM

The Giants' first string passing game finally put together a great drive. 2-minute drill, going 91 yards for a TD on mainly passing plays. Was glad Coughlin didn't bring them back out for the 3rd quarter. Let them Costanza it - leave on a high note. Geoff Schwartz dislocated a toe so that's certainly not a good thing with an already thin line. He'll likely be out a couple of weeks. Hopefully Beckham finally gets into a game the last week of preseason, I'd feel better about him if I could actually see him play.

Ryan Nassib has played great the last 2 games, yes primarily against backups and third stringers, but I think he's certainly played well enough to warrant being the only backup QB. A 3rd QB is a waste of a roster space in today's NFL. You're probably screwed if your starter gets knocked out for a long time, and regardless there is never a shortage of veteran QBs on the market to bring in as an extra backup later on if needed.

And Corey Washington with his 4th TD in as many games. His 53-man roster spot has to be secure by now, the only question is whether or not Coughlin will give him any sort of playing time in the regular season.

Ermaximus 08-23-2014 01:08 PM

Vito, the Giants need to threaten to fire Coughlin again. They'll likely win another Super Bowl.

Loving what I am seeing from Bortles though. He'll be the starter by game 3 at least. Henne just isn't a good starter. Manageable backup at best, but starter, no.

Just wait until week 2 or 3 where he has a bad couple of series' drives, and the team panics and let Manziel come in to "save the day". ESPN will have the QB controversy they clamor for. The allure of instant jersey/merch sales and knee-jerk fan pacification will trump a long range plan of trying to build a winning franchise.

Evil Vito 08-24-2014 09:36 PM

Not really. "In the mix" means they're in the hunt late in the season. I figured Seattle and San Francisco were playoff locks but if any division could produce 3 playoff teams, it's the NFC West. If you were to tell me Arizona or St. Louis would be the 2nd wild card I wouldn't have been surprised.

Arizona is still in play but I'm willing to rule St. Louis out now after the Bradford injury.

DaveBrawl 08-25-2014 11:53 AM

Never really cared for Richie Incognito. Nothing really to do with this whole bullying thing, but I watched him a couple of times with the Rams, and he really seemed like a less than medicore player..then he tried to hit some dude with his helmet. I mean I know the Bills and Dolphins struggled for depth and talent while he was there, but he never struck me as someone worth the hassle he always brings.

road doggy dogg 08-25-2014 11:59 AM

Yeah he's kind of a shitbag, but he's graded out positively the past few seasons and definitely would help out teams that are hurting on the line

Really doubt he's actually getting cut and their issue with Ridley's low carries is probably Belichick wanting to see more of the other RBs not named Vereen than anything special.

@Vito, Giants traded some kicker (Brandon McManus) to Broncos for a conditional 7th

Evil Vito 08-26-2014 04:16 PM

That's pretty sweet. McManus looked really good in preseason but there was no way in hell Coughlin was going to turn the kicking job over to a rookie unless Josh Brown had an awful preseason, which he didn't. So the Giants basically got something for a guy who was gonna otherwise be cut.

Evil Vito 08-26-2014 11:48 PM

So apparently the condition in the conditional 7th rounder the Broncos gave the Giants for McManus is that the Giants only get the pick if McManus is on Denver's roster after week 5. Seeing as that's when Prater returns from suspension, they almost certainly will release McManus after 4 games and not give up anything.

That makes sense really. Teams are increasingly reluctant to trade draft picks for good players, so a draft pick for an undrafted kicker seemed a bit odd.

road doggy dogg 08-26-2014 11:57 PM

Ahh yeah that makes sense, still though if Prater has a setback and McManus is kicking well enough, they could keep him around an extra couple weeks if necessary. Doubtful, but if there's no attractive FAs... who knows.

Really can't lose either way I guess

I always thought the terms "condition _th round pick" meant, say in this case it was a 7th that could escalate, but makes sense this way too

Evil Vito 08-27-2014 12:18 PM

Yeah basically the only way the Broncos wouldn't bring Prater back week 5 is if he gets hurt or something.

Supposedly the Eagles were going to claim McManus cause they've had kicking issues in preseason, so the Giants were really just playing keep-away. Smart.

road doggy dogg 08-27-2014 12:21 PM

Any particular reason you're down on the 49ers this year?

road doggy dogg 08-28-2014 10:35 AM

Gordon wants to play in the CFL this year, but CFL rules don't allow players under NFL contract to play. The Browns would have to cut him in order for this to happen, which is not gonna happen.

I think a lot of people are down on the Niners because of how bad the offense has looked in the preseason. I dunno though. I think they'll be good enough to get the 5 seed. Preseason is like 97% meaningless as far as evaluation of performance is concerned. Only time it may actually matter is when a team is rolling out a brand new scheme.

Actually that's the reason I'm going into the season with tempered expectations. Except for one drive the Giants offense has looked lost. I do think they'll finally hit their stride a few weeks into the season, but the easiest part of their schedule is early on. Hoping they don't give away games they should win since the second half will be brutal.

Evil Vito 08-28-2014 10:44 AM

Also I really wish Coughlin would sit his starters tonight. He said they'll get 15-18 snaps. Why bother? It's not enough of a sample size to mean anything and it's just risking injury. They can't afford anyone else getting hurt.

road doggy dogg 08-28-2014 11:10 AM

Basing anything off the preseason is a very poor way to evaluate things. It literally means nothing. Even if the starters are playing deep into games (3rd/4th week), the coaches are playing things close to the vest to not give away schemes etc. I just don't see how the 49ers, arguably a better team than Seattle even last year, are being disregarded because of a couple of dress rehearsals.

Evil Vito 08-28-2014 11:56 AM

Yeah it's crazy. The Niners will be very good. I thought long and hard about making them my NFC rep for the Super Bowl, actually. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Evil Vito 08-28-2014 12:09 PM

I'll throw my quick predictions in:

AFC East
Patriots
Jets
Dolphins
Bills

AFC North
Ravens
Steelers (Wild Card 2)
Bengals
Browns

AFC South
Colts
Texans
Titans
Jaguars

AFC West
Broncos
Chargers (Wild Card 1)
Chiefs
Raiders

Pats, Colts, and Broncos would all seem to be safe bets. I think the AFC North will be strong, the Ravens just barely missed out last year. I see 2 teams emerging from that division. Despite having them missing the playoffs I don't think the Bengals will be awful, but every year a team everybody thinks will be really good ends up being a bit worse than expected and for some reason I think it'll be them. It might be my total lack of faith in Andy Dalton. Honorable mention: seriously considered the Jets for the 2nd WC, I think they'll actually be pretty good. I like their defense and think Chris Johnson will be a nice boost to their offense.

NFC East
Eagles
Giants
Cowboys
Redskins

NFC North
Packers
Bears (Wild Card 2)
Lions
Vikings

NFC South
Saints
Falcons
Panthers
Buccaneers

NFC West
Seahawks
49ers (Wild Card 1)
Cardinals
Rams

The East is wide open, any team can win. Just went with the Eagles since they're the "known" commodity but if they fell apart it wouldn't surprise me. The North should be tight, the Lions are impossible to forecast. Locked in on the Saints for the South, Panthers will come back down to Earth. Only have the Cardinals not getting the 2nd Wild Card because the division will beat the shit out of each other all year. Despite the brutal schedule Seahawks should get 6 or 7 home wins before even looking at the road games, so that pushes them to the top of the division.

Super Bowl: Seahawks over Colts. I don't think I've ever predicted a repeat winner before, it's not easy to do. But if they get homefield through the playoffs it'll be a huge boost for them...and they just have insane depth.

Nark Order 08-28-2014 12:59 PM

The 49ers are going to valiantly defeat the Seahawks in the playoffs. Nobody worry.

Emperor Smeat 08-28-2014 03:46 PM

NFL passes new punishment rules for domestic abuse cases. 1st offense is a 6 game suspension while a second offense is a lifetime ban.

Making things interesting is the new rules allow the 1st penalty to be longer if the player has any past history with domestic abuse, hits a pregnant woman, or does it in front of a child. Players can also request for reinstatement after a year for the second offense but NFL hinted its not going to work.

road doggy dogg 08-28-2014 04:04 PM
