Sorry...but this is middling at best. I guess the fans like it? But good god the fans are deprived of stellar promo work.

#1-norm-fan 06-21-2023 01:23 PM

The hyperbole of the tweets aside, I thought it was a really good little “nothing” promo. Always been a fan.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-21-2023 01:27 PM

I dunno he kinda sucks lol

Helmsphere 06-21-2023 01:30 PM

It's not the subject matter of the promos he cuts that people like, it's the confidence and swagger in which he cuts them.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-21-2023 01:34 PM

Did I say it was the subject matter, Helmsphere? I don't like his delivery and his confidence/swagger is stilted as fuck.

I think Eli Knight is the best thing since sliced bread. YEAAAAAAAH!

Lock Jaw 06-21-2023 07:41 PM

Is 2000s Rock the one where he was face for awhile and was really kinda boring/generic but charismatic at the same time? Cause that comparison seems spot on with that clip... seems like LA was pretty much doing a Rock impression with his delivery/speech pattern.

Helmsphere 06-21-2023 07:48 PM

I've only seen little of LA Knight. He seems good but doesn't seem like he won't be a main eventer. He's pretty much Mr. Kennedy of the 2020. He checks alot of boxes and it may be fun to think okay he will be a star.

LA Knight won me over for a bit with his NWA work and some of what I’ve seen in WWE. But that was back to the guy trying to cosplay as Rock. WWE crowds seem “vanilla.” I guess that is considered a good reaction? It only impressed me when they did the singalong at the end. They’re singalong crowds.

Logan Paul is excellent in that clip though. He’s “in” every moment. Biggest star in the match.

This is what WWE wanted with the homogenizing of everything. Easier to "program the masses" and get them to do what you want when you take away most of the unique stuff.

I still miss the unique sets of PPV's :(

Before I stopped watching, the last big pop that I remember a crowd delivering was when AJ Styles debuted at the Royal Rumble. For one, it was a pretty big surprise, but on top of that, it was different. You had this one motherfucker who'd never been in a WWE in any major capacity getting a better reaction than anybody else on the roster at the time, certainly bigger than the Golden Boy they were trying to push. It was a sign of the times and of the power of the soul sucking machine that is WWE "creative".

The crowd cheers him so I guess it works for what it is, but I'd argue that it's highly cringy and he comes across as the Wish version of Rock. Clearly he's got some talent but maybe he should use it to not be a knockoff.

Don't get me wrong, I get some gimmicks are stolen, but it's usually done in a way where the guy makes it his own. That promo was not that.

Fignuts 06-23-2023 01:28 PM

His cadence definitely reminds me of the rock's but I don't really mind as the content of the promo is entertaining enough.

XL 06-23-2023 03:35 PM

He is speaking voice sounds like The Rock, he can’t get away from that. Doesn’t mean he needs to lean in it though either.

GD 06-23-2023 09:15 PM

Whoa! That looked scary.

Evil Vito 06-23-2023 09:46 PM

This clip remains every bit as awkward as it was when it happened. Other than Triple H, nobody was told if they were getting drafted because they wanted authentic reactions. And that includes the announcers.

So here is JR essentially getting demoted on live TV and being unable to hide being incredibly pissed about it. And really, who can blame him?

This also means that Michael Cole has been the lead voice of WWE for 15 years now.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OnThisDayInWWE?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#OnThisDayInWWE</a> 15 years ago on <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WWERaw?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WWERaw</a>:<br><br>Jim Ross is drafted to SmackDown - and Michael Cole to Raw<a href="https://twitter.com/JRsBBQ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@JRsBBQ</a> said on his blog he wasn't aware of the switch before it happened:<br><br>&quot;I am not happy about this surprise development. GD 06-23-2023 09:59 PM

That was pretty harsh. I remember J.R. and King were getting very dull by then. Poor Cole thought he was getting fired for a few seconds.

Thought he was excellent in NWA. His confident delivery lent itself well to that old school “over-the-top, but still grounded in reality” setting.

Jim Cornette is quick as a whip. He’s right about almost everything wrestling related. It’s funny how nuts he drives Dave Meltzer and The Elite.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-25-2023 03:28 PM

Over the past few years I've veered more onto the "progressive" side of things and some things Cornette says drive me nuts. Just like, "duuuuuuuude, no...."

But I still love him and honestly think his heart is in the right place. Plus, yeah, he's right about a lot of shit. Some of his personal creative decisions were...interesting. But he grasps the meat and potatoes of good wrestling and I love listening to him talk history.

Mr. Nerfect 06-25-2023 03:41 PM

I’m also trying to be on the progressive side of things. I get what you mean. Totally fair assessment of him. A lot of what is said about him are total lies, projections, etc. But there is the occasional “dude, no” like you said.

How is it so bad?? It seems impossible. It’s like they filmed it and then said “Too sad. Can you tell the story again but this time, try to channel Tommy Wiseau. And other guy, try reacting like the co-worker you hate is telling you he got fired and you have to feign sympathy.”

It feels like there was someone off camera with a gun to a puppies head forcing them to read cue cards

Got to say, while I haven’t been following WWE that closely, the Seth/Finn feud seems way more interesting than I would have originally thought. Love the connective tissue to their Universal Title stuff and it being used to prep Seth’s asshole laughing gimmick for UK backlash.

Legit want Finn to take the belt. The nailed on outcome is Seth retains and continues with the fighting champ gimmick but I think Balor taking the title and cementing his place in Judgment Day and their place on the card is the better outcome. If you want the “fracture lines in the group” (I don’t personally as it’s too close of The Bloodline stuff) you can have Priest win MITB. I’d potentially have him cash in immediately on the guy that eventually beats Finn for the belt which could even be Seth.

The bare minimum has piqued your interest? Gosh, you're deplorable.

Hey, AEW fans would call that “long term booking”.

Mr. Nerfect 07-01-2023 11:54 AM

Finn winning the belt is cool. I’m not keen on Priest winning MITB though.

The anguish in the children's faces.

Mr. Nerfect 07-02-2023 12:45 PM

Fuck me. The scissors make me legitimately squeamish. This is why I can’t get into STARDOM. They don’t make women’s wrestling like this anymore.

Mr. Nerfect 07-02-2023 12:46 PM

I need to get back into my watch at least one AJW match before bed lol.

GD 07-02-2023 12:57 PM

Heyo!

Fignuts 07-02-2023 01:10 PM

The problem is that STARDOM is primarily marketed to creepy older men who want to hug them at meet and greets. AJW's success was in large part due to being marketed to younger girls.

Mr. Nerfect 07-02-2023 01:12 PM

The wrestling was also better. AJW does give off more…sincere vibes. Presented more like a sport and less like a pervert’s fantasy.

Fignuts 07-02-2023 01:16 PM

Overall, yes. Stardom does still consistently deliver genuinely great singles matches, though.

It also helps Noid rub one out every night before he goes to sleep.

I’ll take your word for it. :y:
