A couple of things pop into my head anytime I see Sapphire:

1) Mom was a huge Dusty fan, and a full figured woman (she wasn't a fireplug, but she wasn't a skinny girl, either... and she was always the biggest weight-wise of all her brothers and sisters up until near the end and particularly... eh... top-heavy; which I guess was genetic compensation for being the shortest of all her siblings), so seeing Sapphire dance around let her live vicariously.

2) I think of the one interview Cody and Dustin did on Jericho, where they were asked if they thought that the polka dot clothes and being paired with Sapphire "was a rib" (separate questions). The brothers disagreed with the ring gear, but thought Vince was trying to shit on their dad with that. Instead of giving him the commercially accepted standard of beauty in a valet being a tall blonde who would've been on the "eh" side of skinny, they thought they were "saddling" him with a plus-size black chick who was square in the average area of looks. But in particular, Cody's response: "I think [Sapphire] was [a rib] at first, but then she got over."

So, by not doing "Miss America", Vince unwittingly made an avatar for the everywoman because he got the idea to take the man down a few pegs.

I'm on the fence. It has all the potential to be wack-ass bullshit and stereotypes with eventually proven subpar talent, but then again, I thought the same thing about Cryme Tyme at first. They had enough personality to carry it off and not seem like something they were "saddled with".

With that said, I do wish they wouldn't keep doing that ALL THE TIME: just grouping minorities together just because. Or, if they add a white boy to Hit Row, it won't be because he fits in the picture - it will be "look at this wannabe" in full "comedic" effect. Doing something like adding Owen to The Nation and making it make actual sense would be too much like work for the writers.

American Alpha was one of those things, though... a combination of Vince being super horny to get Jason Jordan over very quickly as a breakout singles star and, at the same time, leading a company that constantly tries to foster a sporadic Tag Team division when he's assed to for a few weeks to months, then splitting teams that work and pairing two rando singles together with no plan for them as a team - not even a name.

I've said before that I think that whole "HHH lied to me" thing where people were unhappy with him making promises that didn't pan out that was going around awhile ago was because he rightfully assumed he'd be in charge of shit while Vince was playing with this revamped football league, and by the time he looked back at "his baby", all the NXT call-ups would be on the main roster, pushed, over, and selling merch in a "better to ask forgiveness than permission" move to where he might not have personally picked guys like Balor and such to be main-eventing, but the results would have been too popular to change. But the exact opposite happened. Vince folded the XFL - again - and barely had time to have that train leave the station before he started running it backwards to not only undo Hunter's plans, but erode the foundational groundwork for his plans. And then, with the whole NXT edict of "super young talent with zero wrestling experience" to become wrestlers in their wrestling program, fucking with all the call-ups for seemingly no reason, and leaning too heavy on Roman and Brock without trying to push too many other people into that echelon, it seemed like the writing was on the wall for career trajectories.

Nobody expected Vince's penis to change all that. Those guys weren't just going to sit by the phone expecting Hunter to call them a half year or so later, nor did they know they'd be so minimized in AEW. That's less of a shot at Keith Lee or Swerve (my personal hangup about Keith notwithstanding) than it is about AEW doing stupid shit and not thinking past their surprise debut moment.

Double J apparently gone from WWE after 3-4 months. Didn't say anything about being released though so maybe he just had a short term deal to work through SS.

#1-norm-fan 08-22-2022 10:41 AM

Hadn’t he been working behind the scenes there for a couple years now or was he just on a legends deal?

Sepholio 08-22-2022 11:53 AM

He had left again if I recall and then signed on again this spring as like VP of live events or something like that.

How is Sheamus not on that list? I know he's not technically "British", but by their logic, is McIntyre?

And ditto for Jonny Saint, and I'd even go as far as to consider Robbie Brookside.

XL 08-26-2022 08:26 AM

Sheamus is Irish. Ireland isn’t part of Great Britain.

McIntyre is Scottish. Scotland is part of Great Britain.

They’re not using some weird logic.

The story seemed so insane to me when I was younger, but the older I get the more I’m like “of course, it’s not even that weird.” The rumor was always that Steph was underage, which is the creepy thing about it. I’ve been thinking about the rumor that Santana was on a short list of guys to be the WWF Champion in 1992. When you consider what a worker he was, his potential appeal to certain demographics and all the steroid stuff, he wouldn’t have been the most insane choice in the world.

Bad News Gertner 08-26-2022 02:40 PM

I find Tito to be very whiny on promos. Tito vs Valentine is probably the best IC Title in ring feud ever, but I find a giant chunk of his work outside of Valentine to be EXTREMELY dull. He's "one extreme or the other". For every amazing Islanders vs Strike Force match there's a dozen very dull Tito house show matches.

Perfect storm. Age of consent is somewhere between 14-16 in most European countries. Maybe it’s Randy that was the genius, not his brother.

Destor 08-26-2022 03:53 PM

Age of consent federally in US and Canada is 16 and in most states thats the case as well. In the early 90s the average was still 16 but many states were still at 15 since the federal age was lower at the time.

Nobody equates Shiek and Slaughter with being great workers but fuckin hell could they go in their primes.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-27-2022 12:34 PM

Big mark for the Slaughter cannon.

Mr. Nerfect 08-27-2022 12:43 PM

Slaughter was a great bumper.

Mr. Nerfect 08-27-2022 01:17 PM

I’m skeptical of whether Cena would be allowed to wrestle, because he’s probably got filming for Peacemaker coming up not too long after it, but I would love to see John Cena challenge Gunther for the IC Title at Survivor Series in the TD Garden.

Interesting....:wtf: About the first real "confirmation" of sorts i've seen of this. He heard it in the 90's before the post on the forum years back started doing the rounds that peaked people's interest.

To keep going on this, it doesn’t have to be one thing or the other either. I’ve seen people suggest that Vince was upset Savage took the Slim Jim deal to WCW. They could have compounded each other. Hell, Vince may not have been happy at how things turned out with Elizabeth.

It really wouldn’t be the strangest story in the world if a world famous celebrity had sex with the teenage daughter of his boss. It’s possible Vince wasn’t even upset it happened.

Mr. Nerfect 08-27-2022 01:58 PM

Looking up the age of Stephanie McMahon, the next generation of McMahons popped up. One of Shane’s sons is 18. Aurora is 18 in a couple of years. It will be interesting to see what happens in relation to them and WWE, if anything at all.

XL 08-27-2022 02:45 PM

Are you asking which current superstar is going to be the Macho Man to Aurora’s Stephanie?

Ooh let’s compile this list

Slaughter
Boss Man
Yokozuna
Rikishi
Bam Bam

Who else

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:12 PM

Gonna throw a shoutout to Abyss here

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:13 PM

Bob Sapp when he gets punched in the kidneys sells really well

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:14 PM

If Brock and Roman are considered big men then they’re easy inclusions

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2022 08:15 PM

Foley was 300 pounds and bumped the way he did.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2022 08:17 PM

Just for the hell of it:

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:18 PM

Oh yeah Foley is obvious

Taker too

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2022 08:20 PM

Taker didn't bump that much. Not that he didn't bump at all, I just wouldn't call him a bumper by trade.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:22 PM

That’s fair. He’s a great seller more than a great bumper.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-28-2022 08:22 PM

I need to rethink my list. Mostly thinking of good sellers

Bad News Gertner 08-28-2022 09:17 PM

i think what was great about ECW was that it embraced scumbags. Like...no scumbag felt forced in ECW--they fit it like a glove and it was good tv.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2022 09:35 PM

lol good tv for the time, that is.

He’s got one thing going for him so he’s going to hit it and hit it and hit it until his heart explodes.

Mr. Nerfect 08-29-2022 03:50 AM

Brock is a tremendous seller. He can bump, but he doesn’t do it that often. But frequency doesn’t necessarily equate to the best. Brock is just great.

Mr. Nerfect 08-30-2022 07:14 PM

I hope Meiko Satomura wins the Women’s Championship at Worlds Collide and Mandy Rose goes up to the main roster as Alpha Academy’s female member.

I’d be happy with Tyler Bate becoming NXT Champion too. Bron Breakker can debut at the Survivor Series, even though it’s a couple of months out from WC. Maybe do a thing where Bron Breakker & Tyler Bate win the tag belts for a sneeze and eventually Bate beats Breakker to finish him up in NXT?

EC3's roid gut is more cut than Adam Cole.

#1-norm-fan 08-30-2022 10:42 PM

Roid guts are usually pretty cut. That’s what makes them roid guts.

Bad News Gertner 08-30-2022 10:44 PM

Iron Sheik is the first person I think when I hear "roid gut". He looked pregnant.

Tatanka 2nd WWE run is the other

No thats a roid belly. Specially HGH. Causes the internal organs to grow giving a very bloated stomach. There's a huge push in body building to bring back the vacuum pose to disincentivize it. Every major body builder in the last 15 years has had a shit looking core. Theyre muscular cores but they look awful.

Destor 08-30-2022 10:54 PM

Palumboism is the technical term

Mr. Nerfect 08-30-2022 11:21 PM

Palumboism is also the term for wrestlers who adapt from one promotion to another by adopting a gay gimmick.
