Punk on NXT, coming full circle and being the "veteran" holding down up and coming talent would be a cool use for him.

Mr. Nerfect 08-13-2022 08:09 PM

I’d go as far as saying I “want” it to happen now. Punk would never agree, lol. But him taking over the Diamond Mine and going through Bron Breakker, Roderick Strong, Damon Kemp and Solo Sikoa could be fun stuff that could give the show a proper anchor.

You can could do so much with it. Kurt Angle could become a coach for Damon Kemp, with Punk going after the obvious personal issues of Angle. Solo Sikoa could be offered a spot in Punk’s Diamond Mine, but turn it down and be the DDP of NXT. Punk could add Tessa Blanchard to the group, which would be interesting given her failed professional relationship with AJ Lee (you wouldn’t bring it up, but it would be there). He can do the announcer feud with Wade Barrett, who could cut his own “pipe-bomb” about coming out of retirement.

Have Punk go back to his "savior" gimmick a little bit, and say that he is "saving" the young talent from the wrestling business because "take it from me, the wrestling business will destroy your soul and your spirit just like it destroyed mine"

So he is there to "save" the young talent by taking over NXT and trying to "end their careers" right there before they make it to the horrors of the big stage.

Exactly right, and Punk has kept that kayfabe alive for 11 years because it serves him. Hates the FED, but still living off the pipebomb they allowed/approved for him under the fake guise he did it to make pro wrestling better. I guess he has to use whatever fake credibility he has left since he has exactly zero real credibility

I wasn’t intrigued by the idea because of the source spouting the idea but congrats on reading through the bullshit.

That was already a year ago. How many times has he drawn a million since? In the last 5 months Dynamite got a million once, and that was Blood and Guts, an episode Phil wasn't even on!

if credibility doesnt matter then there is nothing to book. Just put on random matches. Finishes mean nothing. Do away with titles too. If credibility is irrelevant then the only thing that matters is highspots. Do cool shit. Rinse repeat.

Being a good MMA fighter and being a good wrestler are not the same thing. By that logic Jake Hager should be a bigger deal. But the things that make him good in MMA aren’t the things that make him good in wrestling. It’s the opposite for Punk. Awful fighter. Very good professional wrestler. IMO.

Destor 08-14-2022 01:29 AM

The same thing that makes swagger bad in MMA makes him bad in wrestling. He's got the personality to cure insomnia. The fight game and MMA are the same game. Because they're both the fight game. And on the other side the same thing that makes Punk a shit tier fighter makes him a shit tier worker: he's a giant pussy.

Everyone who doesnt mind punk being a giant pussy is already watching. And its not cutting it.

Destor 08-14-2022 01:31 AM

Now if we could mesh them into one guy we'd have a top tier fighter and a top tier worker...

No, so incredibly untrue. Had they pushed Jake Hager as an MMA Killer from the start, it would have at least been believable. He would still be boring as all hell, but believable.

With Punk though, no amount of skill in pretend fighting should be enough for anybody with any sense at all to forget just how absolutely bad at fighting he really is. Had Punk never done MMA, he could have come back to wrestling and still had the benefit of fans not knowing how inept he actually is. Like Bischoff said, he worked himself into thinking because he was booked to win fake fights that he could actually fight. He cannot, and now we all know it.

Mr. Nerfect 08-14-2022 05:16 AM

At best I thought they just let him run wild with a promo which it sounds like they still did.

Maybe at the time, because nobody knew where they were going with it, I thought there was an element of shoot to it, but I have my doubts. IIRC I was just like "Oh shit they actually finally let Punk be Punk, this could be good."

Retrospectively, it seemed like a work the whole way through, especially once he won the fucking title. And I don't see what's wrong with that. It was really well done.

Anyways, in recent times, especially, I haven't talked to anyone who actually thinks it was a shoot.

brockis the perfect example to show why not being a giant pussy matters. Hell in 04 he skyrocketed to the top of the industry because he was undisputably credible. Fast forward to today and its still true. He draws because anyone flipping channels who happens to see him buys him in 10 seconds or less.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 11:13 AM

Brock has become less and less of a draw over time. By any metric you wanna use to measure it.

It’s almost as if what he did in MMA has become less of a factor and his wrestling booking has effected his drawing power in... ya know... wrestling.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 11:31 AM

I’ve used this analogy before: Imagine watching a boxing movie where Mike Tyson, in his prime, plays a fictional version of himself. If he’s loses 50% of the time in the movie, as they build to his big fight while promoting him as an unstoppable beast, are you gonna think “Well, he IS Mike Tyson.” or are you gonna think “This is shit storytelling. I’m out.”?

xrodmuc316 08-14-2022 12:20 PM

Got buzzed of a dumdum making an analogy.

Imagine the NBA wanted to make a movie about the greatest 3 point shooter of all time Steph Curry. Now imagine they cast Shaquille O'Neal to play Steph Curry. That film would be a comedy of epic proportions, because everybody knows Shaq is a horrible 3 point shooter.

FYI, Shaq made one 3 point shot in his entire career, which is one more than the number of wins that exposed fraud Phil had in his MMA career.

Phil being presented as the best guy is an embarrassment to AEW.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 12:29 PM

LOL @ “Got buzzed” as the new strategy. Holy shit.

xrodmuc316 08-14-2022 01:45 PM

Of course idiot ignored the entire analogy and focused on something else. Moron, I have ALREADY posted a screenshot in the casual politics thread of a different somebody summoning me to look at and respond to your dumbshit posts. there's a myriad of reasons for the diminished returns, least of all lack of fresh matches and more over a lack of fresh matches with credible talent. What ever the case may be its tangential. Brock, even while less than he was, remains the top draw based soley on his credibility.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 02:59 PM

Solely? I think the lack of other draws in wrestling has something to do with it. Brock could have gotten his ass kicked in MMA and he’d still be the top draw because no one else is a draw.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 03:07 PM

Putting a guy like Seth Rollins over him clean multiple times MAY have hampered his aura a bit too. Lol

If the geek in the midcard is beating you in a few minutes, you can only say “BUT REMEMBER MMA…” so much. The inverse is true too.

soley yes. But dont misunderstand. He didnt gain his cred entirely in ufc.he gained it in the ncaa. He gained it by looking like an inhuman murder monster. And yes in the ufc. If he had gone over and got mauled...well he wouldnt have had any value.

And to the point "hes draws because no one does" i reject the premise. No one can draw and the company can fold. There isnt a baseline.

I guarantee they still would have brought him back, called him an unstoppable beast and he’d still be their biggest draw. And it wouldn’t be his MMA career that ultimately diminishes his aura in wrestling. It would be jobbing to glorified midcarders.

i highly doubt that. It flies in the face of everything they believe. And it definitely wouldnt have worked. Just like it isnt working for AEW with Punk. He got a 1 night bump and that was that. You're marketing believability. Being believable comes with the territory.

#1-norm-fan 08-14-2022 06:18 PM

Right. Punk gave them a bump (it was more than just one night). He was over regardless of his MMA career. Hence the bump. Which kinda proves my point. KEEPING the audience from that bump is mostly up to the booking.

The story being told within the realm of wrestling is ultimately what matters.

Damian Rey 2.0 08-14-2022 06:53 PM

The first ppv Punk headlined did 35k more buys than the year before. His first ppv match where he was the main draw over doubled the buy rate the year before. It certainly wasn’t a one night bump.

And then they immediately lost 60,000 of those buys on the next PPV

Mr. Nerfect 08-15-2022 02:52 AM

Yeah, the Summer of Punk SummerSlam did worse numbers than the Nexus SummerSlam the year before. By a wider margin than Punk generated interest for MITB. He’s just not a draw.

XL 08-15-2022 12:55 PM

Or maybe that’s a reflection on WWE’s inability to pull the trigger on the obvious plot direction at the “Biggest Party of the Summer”?

Yeah, I went looking for a WELL ACTUALLY to support Punk but just kept finding more evidence to suggest he wasn’t a draw.

Now, does that affect my enjoyment of the story? Not at all. That’s down to the way it was handled creatively.

#1-norm-fan 08-16-2022 03:56 PM

It’s also irrelevant to the subject which was whether his MMA career ruined his drawing ability in wrestling. The bump he provided initially when he returned is evidence that he was just fine. He clearly helped AEW’s business despite MMA. Whatever happened over time after that is a different story.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I think Punk is good. He can talk and his matches can be really good. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying his work.

I’ll say this though: I don’t go back and revisit Punk. I didn’t miss him when he was gone. I’ll still sometimes go back and watch Brock vs. Bryan. I think I’m more likely to check out an old John Cena match than a CM Punk one. My heart still breaks for not having more Bret Hart or Shawn Michaels. There’s this care-factor for Punk that I’ve found just isn’t there.

Well their main storyline was the NWO and once that was done their lack of creativity really showed through, arguably their lack of creativity was on show during the nwo run just adding more and more members to it. Then they recycled that to black and red and black and silver, one trick ponies.

Always loved the WCW camerawork on these entrances.

Never fails to amaze me just how shit the wwe version of goldbergs entrance is compared to this.

Never fails to amaze me just how shit the unneccesary switch to Megadeth was in WCW. If something like that was his theme to begin with, sure. He had something that stood out and felt epic, and then switched him up to yet another "chugga chugga chugga" guitar song, even if it was by an actual band instead of from a Turner Media music repository (that gave us such highs as "Satan's Sister" for the Hollywood Blondes to the depths of Jericho's fake "Evenflow"). The initial WWE change just felt like copied math homework, but that was comparably better than WCW writing social studies answers in the math textbook in the first place.

US Champ Goldberg was peak Goldberg IMO.

It was still on the organic side, they weren't quite fucking with the streak numbers yet (multiple wins on every TV show from Nitro to WorldWide against guys like Blitzkreig or "Lightning Foot" Jerry Flynn to pad the resume isn't the same as just making up impossible numbers), he wasn't yet in the main event picture, so there wasn't much backstage politicking in the way of his clear upward momentum.

He was just allowed to be a "force of nature" in both gimmick and as a phenomenon of time and place. People were still allowed to buy into taking the ride.

Also, unrelated to any of the above, I would like to acknowledge the Xero sighting, even though I'm a couple days late.

Bischoff talks about that on a podcast, they were only allowed to use so many seconds (3 mins) of Voodoo child each show, which is why Hogan would come out to either Voodoo Child or Rockhouse. $100k back in the day to use it for a year.

The funny thing about "Rockhouse" was it was a song made up of random sound samples in other hendrix songs, someone clashed them together, extended it and made a theme out of it.

Would be funny if the reason Punk vs. Mox is on free TV next week is because Punk wants out ASAP.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 12:31 AM

WWE should re-hire John Morrison for Raw.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 12:48 AM

I did some WWE fantasy booking over the next few months. I never really shuffle the rosters around much. Instead of doing a proper draft this year, I kind of hope they just have a few guys/girls change show upon request.

To Raw:

1. Pete Dunne - Gets attacked at Clash at the Castle by Dexter Lumis. Dunne wants revenge but can’t get across the shows, but he ends up as 24/7 Champion giving him the right to be there. Theory helps Lumis beat Dunne in a Hardcore Match at Extreme Rules to win the belt and Dunne requests his move to go back after them.

2. Sami Zayn - He decides he wants to get away from The Bloodline. They see this betrayal and he gets attacked and has a babyface moment against Roman Reigns.

3. Happy Corbin - He’s had enough of being disrespected by Pat McAfee & Michael Cole on commentary. He puts over McAfee in a Street Fight main event before leaving.

4. Lacey Evans - I don’t know what they have her do. I’ve got her partnered with Bobby Lashley in my head, but I don’t want to drag Lashley down.

To SmackDown:

1. American Alpha - Feel they are “misused” on Raw. They are accused of trying to get away from the teams they are feuding with at the time (Dolph Ziggler & Bobby Roode and Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander), only to find that they have also requested their transfer.

2. Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode - See above. Also some fresh meat for Gunther to squash.

3. Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander - See above. Further padding for the SmackDown tag side.

4. Angelo Dawkins - Requests his transfer to try and make it as a singles guy to the “shock” of Montez Ford.

5. Veer Meehan - Joins back with Jinder Mahal and Shanky for a little bit, or gets repackaged as a babyface.

You could also call up a bunch of NXT talents to balance out the shows.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 04:42 AM

Noid books Clash at the Castle:

SPOILER: show
* Kofi Kingston & Shinsuke Nakamura defeat The Viking Raiders. “Kinshasa in Paradise” forms because Kofi needs a partner to go against The Raiders. Malamutes steps forward because he knows what it is like to go to war when his partner is injured. They get a special entrance together here. The faces win because The Raiders are kind of in that meh spot.

* Pete Dunne wins a Battle Royal when he finds a way to muscle out Omos, ala Benoit and Big Show in the 2004 Rumble. Lots of stories can be furthered in this. An Uso can dump out Zayn, Ford can dump out Dawkins, etc. Dunne cuts a promo talking about how he cut his teeth in the UK as Pete Dunne so he’s dedicating this match to his Bruiserweight roots on the pre-show or something.

* Liv Morgan defeats Shayna Baszler with a roll-up after Shayna goes into a turnbuckle Natalya, who is in her corner, exposes. I guess Nattie has the team with Sonya now. I’d just have Nattie play the field a bit and offer her assistance to Shayna to get to this finish. She’s not necessary to the finish, but whatever. It’s another story. Liv is going down the route of Bo Dallas, so keep her winning and building that heat.

* Bobby Lashley & AJ Styles defeat The Miz & Ciampa. Styles points out he won the WWE Title in the UK so it’s special to him. He gets the pin on Miz here. He can look at Lashley’s belt afterwards.

* Tyler Bate defeats Kevin Owens to retain the NXT UK Championship. Owens is announced as Bate’s opponent because he wants to rip the UK Title from that shitty little developmental. As a French Canadian he has no respect for the Commonwealth. He’s an absolute asshole, carries himself like a prick, overlooks Bate and loses here. The NXT UK Title becomes the WWE UK Title and is moved to Raw, possibly as a crossover belt with NXT.

* Gunther defeats Sheamus to retain the IC Title. Just let these men go.

* Edge & Rey Mysterio defeat The Judgment Day. Dominik Mysterio makes his decision and clocks Finn Balor with a steel chair to help his dad get the win. I’m not ready for the Rey vs. Dominik feud yet.

* Matt Riddle defeats Seth Rollins to get a measure of revenge for their issues. This match goes quite a while and is another “workrate” contribution from the Raw side.

* D-Femination XX defeat Bianca Belair, Asuka & Alexa Bliss. This gets time to give you the combos you want — specifically Asuka and Iyo. I’d give the pin to Sky, who pins Bianca.

* Drew McIntyre defeats Roman Reigns to become the new WWE Undisputed Unified Universal Heavyweight Champion of the World. Drew is attacked earlier in the show, presumably by Karrion Kross. He uses that to sell for Reigns (probably the leg, with the Claymore being targeted). Drew hits it, takes ages going into the pin, only gets two when Kross pulls out the ref and socks them. Drew gets into it with Kross and gets beaten down. Kross keeps hitting refs as they pour out. A female ref or two is taken out by Scarlet. Riddle runs down and starts brawling with Kross (it’s in his interest that Drew wins — we’re reminded of this in a post-win interview). While Kross is being dealt with, Shane McMahon runs down in a ref shirt. He’s still licensed from 1992. Roman only gets two off Kross’ finisher. He’s mad, gets in Shane’s face. Shoves Shane, gets shoved back, roll-up, fast three count! Drew wins both belts under controversial circumstances.

Forgot all about Noam Dar and how he got a push once cause Vince thought it was funny how he said "Alicia Fuuuuuuuuuuuux"

(Read his name in the NXT thread but didn't want to post in it)

screech 08-20-2022 12:34 PM

I didn't post anything but someone else said they're trash and got a lot of "wow racism" replies

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 02:41 PM

It depends why you don’t like them. I’m not sold on the whole presentation yet. It has potential. AJ Francis has something. Ashante Adonis is athletic. They feel like too much of a gimmick to me right now though. I prefer my teams to have that American Alpha ring work energy.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 02:45 PM

Swerve will be kicking himself that he signed with AEW to be a nothing champ with that husk Keith Lee. AEW is going to have a bit of trouble signing free agents who will be waiting for that WWE call.

Hell, a lot of AEW champions probably want to drop their belts and jump back over. Actually, I’d bet Triple H would be able to sign all the ROH champs if negotiations were open.

XL 08-20-2022 03:36 PM

Swerve, Keith Lee, Undisputed Elite all probably kicking themselves with HHH now in charge.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 03:39 PM

The Gunn Club would love to be WWE right now too.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 07:49 PM

I’m actually pretty excited for CATC. Predictions for the rest of the card:

* The Judgment Day vs. Edge & Rey Mysterio. This seems like the direction they’re heading. Edge & Rey have been presented as friends again, 20 years on from when they won the Tag Team Championship together. Finn Balor will probably make the UK card. Edge & Rey are both legends that seem likely to get a spot. Should be a really good tag team match that will involve Dominick’s decision, although I would be totally fine if it’s just a tag match with a finish and Dominik does what he does on Raw.

* Bobby Lashley vs. AJ Styles vs. The Miz vs. Omos for the US Title. Kind of thrown together, but the card already has the “workrate.” Lashley, Styles and Miz are all big stars for them, and they’ve all been intertwined. Ciampa can be at ringside for Miz running interference. He’s also fairly new to the main roster, so I don’t think they give him an actual position in the match. Omos is someone they want to be a special attraction, plus he has history with Lashley and Styles. I can see Omos winning a Battle Royal to join Lashley, Styles and Miz for the match.

* Happy Corbin vs. Pat McAfee in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. I’m iffy on whether McAfee works this show, but he’ll be there and it’s a stadium show. They’re clearly building towards another showdown between the two. It’d be very easy to get there — Corbin beats Ricochet or something (haven’t seen this week) then he pulls out a football to taunt McAfee. He teases punting it, but then hits McAfee with it and reveals that it was a loaded gimmick. McAfee is a good performer with a good connection to WWE fans.

* Kevin Owens gives an open challenge. I always forget he’s on the roster and someone that they really like. He’s a featured enough player getting a renewed enough push for this sort of thing. I can see him cussing out the UK like he did Texas. Tyler Bate answers and gets the upset victory in Wales.

That pushes the card to 9 matches, which is a lot for what they’re currently doing. But I think that is a pretty appropriate card and gives off a varied but very WWE flavor. Not everything has to hit 5 stars. That being said, a few of them are probably going to be belters.

Mr. Nerfect 08-20-2022 08:42 PM

Trish Stratus is going to be on Raw in Toronto.
