Former WWE referee Tim White passed away

Mr. Nerfect 06-19-2022 12:44 PM

That sucks. Always liked White as a ref. He was part of the team when I first started watching.

Mr. Nerfect 06-19-2022 12:48 PM

I mean, he was there for years. But I have this strong emotional attachment to the team of Earl Hebner, Tim White, Mike Chiota, Jack Doan, Teddy Long, Jim Korderas, Mike Sparks and Chad Patton.

Mr. Nerfect 06-19-2022 12:53 PM

Just looking up some of the referees now. How did I not know Mike Sparks was Dave Hebner’s son?

XL 06-19-2022 12:53 PM

Yep. That’s the peak of referees right there. Though I hated Hebner’s work.

RIP Mr White

Mr. Nerfect 06-19-2022 01:06 PM

Agree on Hebner. When I first started watching, they convinced me he was really great though. They loved propping him up.

Remember when they did the whole scab referee thing in 1999? I have no clue what the point was, but all the referees decided to go on strike. All except Jimmy Korderas, for whatever reason. You had Steve Lombardi reffing a match or two in there. Not sure if there even was a purpose.

For some reason, I think I’ve actually see this before. It was on some documentary about Ed Ferrera or wrestling in general, maybe. I just remember being confused as to why a fan would mock JR so readily, and why it was then okay to physically destroy that fan and why they were doing this with JR.

Tiger Ali Singh has got more life in his promos than a lot of the guys who win a World Title these days. That’s just sad.

Yeah this what basically inspired Russo to have him play the "Oklahoma" character. I've watched this video a bunch of types and that is a hell of a bump Ferrara takes for someone who isn't actually a wrestler.

Jordan 06-20-2022 05:33 PM

Fuck Ed Ferrara, I don't care if he did break his sternum. I think he's a scum bag. Same for Russo too, it's a surprise Vince hasn't had his teeth removed from some disgruntled superstar from the past.

If I was one of the boys especially in this era and one of those skinny fat mark exec's wanted to inject themselves into the show, I'd have given them plenty of reason to make it a one shot deal.

Bischoff too, too bad that Cat or Zbyszko didn't teach them a lesson for stepping into the ring.

I think Ferrera actually did local stuff. The spot does looks surprisingly good, and I’m sure Williams adds to that a lot, but I think Ferrera had technically bumped before (but I doubt he was any good or anything).

Mr. Nerfect 06-20-2022 05:42 PM

I think The Cat and Bischoff are actually kind of friends irl. As for your post about injecting themselves in the show and stepping in the ring, Vince McMahon did the same thing but the difference is he was far more entertaining and created possibly the most popular storyline feud of all time with Austin.

The Undertaker vs. Ken Shamrock from Backlash ‘99 is an underrated match. It’s got no crowd heat and it’s against the backdrop of the terrible Ministry of Darkness story, but the match itself is actually pretty great.

Shamrock is working like a man possessed against the guy who has messed with his sister. JR is very clear on the call that Shamrock is going to have the advantage on the mat, but Taker is going to be stronger with a vertical base (Man, Taker would not go for that just a few years later when he wanted to be the MMA machine). It’s kind of refreshing to see a babyface take such a clear advantage in a match, and keep going back to that weakness he created.

One of the hidden gems on the Attitude era in terms of bell-to-bell stuff.

Mr. Nerfect 06-21-2022 10:18 AM

One of the things I became most nostalgic for at a certain point was Taker having an entrance where he didn’t take 5 minutes to get to the ring.

Jordan 06-21-2022 10:26 AM

I do remember that match, very good match that was more MMA based than most WWE matches at the time.

I think I slept on it because I’m not much of a Taker fan. It really never clicked with me how weird it was that Taker was doing MMA stuff in 1999. And he’s not exactly the driving force of it. He’s responding to what Shamrock is putting out.

I dunno, man — you’re entitled to your opinion, but if you haven’t gone back in a while I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe leave the memories alone. There’s nothing quite as awkward as hearing a babyface Vince trying to force human sympathy while at the same time talking about Stephanie’s personal possessions in the context of violation. This was prime awful Russo too. The gimmick is that “Mark” believes in the bullshit Undertaker gimmick.

Bad News Gertner 06-21-2022 02:10 PM

Taker during that era was a rough watch. Especially in 1999.

Yeah lol I watched it back a few years ago the angle was horrible but I mean the concept of the Ministry stable itself wasnt a really bad idea if it didn't go in that direction and it got even worse once the Corporate Ministry was formed and Vince was revealed as the higher power because it made the whole angle make no sense at all.

Crippla 06-21-2022 02:21 PM

1999 WWF was a little bit cringe worthy tbh and the continuity and consistency was awful

When I was first getting into wrestling and was hungry for anything, I remember 1999 being really…jarring to me. For the most part, anyway. I think I knew it wasn’t good the first time watching it. But I was still like “Yeah! Wrestling! I guess…”

I’d say it doesn’t hold up well, but I’m not sure it did even past its initial VHS releases.

Just some weird time-related things:

* Edge is basically as old as John Laurinaitis was at Money in the Bank 2011.

* Money in the Bank 2011 is basically right in the middle of WWE post-Austin heel turn and right now.

1999 is definitely the worst year in the Attitude Era (product wise). I'd say the awfulness runs from Survivor Series 98 to Survivor Series 99

Mr. Nerfect 06-22-2022 06:19 PM

It sounds really weird, but I associate 1999 WWF with this different aesthetic to 1998 WWF. I think of 1999 as being more drained of color and I think of lots of guys in white t-shirts hitting each other with trash can lids. It’s a way more “pale” time in my head. 1998 makes me think of deep reds and generally being more saturated with color.

I don’t know, it’s an odd thing, but I’ve felt it since I was a kid. I don’t even know if it’s accurate or it’s just how my brain processed “More Russo.”

I think there are strokes of genius in 1999. Well, I’m mainly thinking of Mankind winning the WWF Title. But generally the period does suck. It’s really them cashing in off 1997, 1998 and them having the giant stars they do.

I’m fascinated by the reason 2000 managed to be such a financially viable year for them after quite a crappy ‘99.

BigCrippyZ 06-22-2022 06:34 PM

2000 had the true elevation of Rock and HHH as the 2 true elite main event guys second only to an absent Austin, the McMahon-Helmsley family drama, a returning "new" Taker, and the intro and upper card "elevation" of Kurt, Jericho, Benoit, and Eddie, plus throw in the Dudleys, Edge and Christian and the Hardys as the elite tag title competitors. That's just a ridiculously stacked roster even without Austin. Probably why 2000 was such a good year.

98 was still a transition year. Their young guys like Edge, Christian etc hadn't hit their stride yet. It wasn't until 2000 where they all started to shine. The in ring product improved drastically in 2000 with those guys taking huge steps, as well as the Radicals. HHH hits his peak, the tag division is as tight as ever. Jericho finds his groove Just so much. Plus Russo leaves and Kreski and crew take over.

2000 also doesn't feel as sleazy as 1999.

If Vince had any product knowledge of WCW, he'd have put Jindrak and O'Haire into a feud with the Hardyz. The alternative kids run into the jocks who do their moves better. Fuckin writes itself.

I always wanted O'Haire to feud with Jeff once he started doing the Seanton Bomb. Combine that with Jindrak being more athletic than Matt and you've really got something.

Bad News Gertner 06-22-2022 10:46 PM

I liked Palumbo and O'Haire more than Jindrak and O'Haire.

Love me some Chuckie P

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-22-2022 10:51 PM

Palumbo is a way better worker than Jindrak, but I felt O'Haire and Jindrak made more sense as two young, over-confident hotshots. Palumbo always looked 50 to me.

That's when it started going downhill but everything post WrestleMania 15 in 1999 was absolutely horrendous imo. At least the first few months were still somewhat watchable but then it got really cringeworthy storyline wise

Crippla 06-22-2022 11:10 PM

I think Palumbo and O'Haire had a better look as a team though. They were my two favorite Natural Born Thrillers with Mike Sanders as the mouthpiece of course. I never really cared much for Jindrak and Stasiak was awful lol

Yeah I don't know why he always looked so much older. His face always looked aged by like ten years at least. I'm thinking back on this now that you mentioned it, he even looked like he had wrinkles when he was like 30

I remember thinking 2001 post-Mania X7 was really vibrant in comparison to the previous years, just lots of colour popping.

I can see what you mean there. Everything got a little “crisper” visually. They had moved away from some grit too. A lot of guys added more color to their gear too. Triple H used gold trimming at Mania. Kurt Angle’s singlets got shinier. Tajiri debuted and had his pants, lol. But yeah, lots of color.

Austin having coloured knee braces is the one thing I could call out off the top of my head.

29 slams and I'm selling just out of general principle in that my back would likely be in legit pain.

Mr. Nerfect 06-23-2022 01:25 PM

Somewhere along the line, a bunch of fake bad-asses got the idea that being tough meant you didn’t feel pain. It’s one of the more ridiculous tropes in wrestling that highlights how it’s somehow all become more insecure.

The trading of forearms spot is another one. It’s like “tell me you’re not a bad-ass without actually telling me you’re not a bad-ass.”

Mr. Nerfect 06-23-2022 01:32 PM

Smarter to do more with less too. But selling requires more talent than a lot of people want to bring to table.

Crippla 06-23-2022 01:34 PM

Selling is 50 percent of a wrestling match...if you're not good at selling then you're probably garbage in the ring

Mr. Nerfect 06-23-2022 01:54 PM

I don’t need to believe it’s real, but there has to be some sort of integrity behind the performances. Too many wrestlers these days want to move the meter on where that is and call it “evolution” or “art.”

Fignuts 06-23-2022 04:35 PM

The more things make sense, the easier it is to get the audience emotionally engaged. Thats true of any story telling medium. In that respect, I think wrestlers have a more difficult task today than they did in the past. Wrestlers in the territory days had to convince the audience what they were seeing is real. Wrestlers of today have to make them forget its not. And the style a lot of these guys practice, really doesn't accomplish that.

100% agree with this. And the style everyone else practices can help you stand out by doing something different, but it can also make your attempts to be taken seriously seem even more silly than the sillier stuff.

I wish more people would try with a prominent platform. I think we’re past the stage where we need to overtly smack people over the head with the idea that we know it’s fake. True ironic post-modern zombie wrestling would be to usher in a new kayfabe with audiences going along with it.

drave 06-23-2022 04:51 PM

You know a team who has gotten over organically through in-ring storyteling over the past year?

FTR.

Those two dudes are fucking amazing to watch and if there's a match (on anyone's card) that has them, I ensure I don't miss it.

They are damn good at mixing a bit of old school "make you believe its real" and new school "make you forget its fake" like Fig said.

Mr. Nerfect 06-23-2022 05:00 PM

FTR are amazing.

I also love Alpha Academy. RKBro are over as shit too, and it’s not like their work is bad.

Eh. They have really never put on a great match. I went to many of their shows and they are fun. But they never got to anything close to ROH level match quality.
