But when it came to his antics outside the ring, he just couldn’t get them under control. Cornette mentioned a brother “whose name is almost Sean” who would mouth off and constantly get Sean into trouble.

Plus, if you think about it, it’s hard to think of an actually good O’Haire or Jindrak match. They had that athleticism and they make for fun gifs now, but they both were pretty much just there on their best days.

It’s not as if guys with substance abuse issues weren’t pushed in the past in spite of that. But yeah, maybe it was just too great a burden in his case.

Like most guys in late WCW, he was just given his name and told to work. The vignettes suddenly gave a charismatic, athletic guy with a great look, direction and a catch. The vignettes were attention grabbing because he had real charisma too. There was definitely star power there.

It’s just sad that he wasn’t given the opportunity to debut the character as it was. I think it could have been so intriguing and he could have been a massive star.

With O’Haire, I think it was more the violence and arrests. Or the situations that could have been arrests but someone things got smoothed over/covered up.

I get what you’re saying. I liked the vignettes too and got swept up in everyone thinking they were good too. But the guy couldn’t take it to actual live promos or his ring work. If he was destined to be such a big star, they would have found a way to make way more money off him. Heyman was behind these vignettes, yeah? This is like outside the myth that the WWE fucked everything up. Sean O’Haire was a guy with a look and a kind of presence in certain contexts that couldn’t deliver overall.

Rammsteinmad 04-26-2022 12:12 PM

O'Haire, with the right work, could have been huge. He could work in the ring and showed he had charisma, and a great look.

If I recall, the first great big moment of his gimmick was convincing Spanky to streak through the arena. Then they teamed him up with Piper which just made him seem like a bitch.

He might have benefitted more in WWE by being teamed up with Jindrak again for a while until both developed more fleshed-out personalities. Aw well...

I liked O'Haire, but Vince was never going to get behind any WCW Invasion guy unless they REALLY had something.

Looking back at all of them, there were maybe 4 exceptions.

1. Booker T who came in as Champion and checked every single box.
2. DDP got a decent run after being buried throughout the entire Invasion angle, mostly because he was so well liked.
3. Chavo Guerrero because he was a Guerrero and far more entertaining than Eddie before Eddie was rehired by WWE.
4. Shane Helms - Only after he completely changed his entire gimmick and became The Hurricane

Nobody else from the initial Invasion was ever given much of a chance. Yeah O'Haire did get paired with Piper and repackaged 2 years later, but that was almost solely to fued Piper and Hogan as Mr America, along with being involved with Vince/Hogan and Vince/Zack Gowen fueds.

Bad News Gertner 04-26-2022 02:36 PM

Chuck Palumbo

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 04:47 PM

Yeah, Chuck Palumbo got a few shots there.

I’d throw Billy Kidman, Rey Mysterio (although not initially brought in), Fit Finlay and Hugh Morrus into that conversation too. Morrus mainly for that backstage role he was given that they had to take away from him. Finlay and Kidman for their agent roles too, but they both had notable on-screen runs. Kidman several championships and never really “embarrassed” — Finlay was at several WrestleManias and was used as a player/coach.

Not to rain on everyone’s parade, but I really do think it was more a talent/attitude thing that kept guys like O’Haire and Jindrak back. Freak athletes (it’s why the got the chance in the first place), but it never came together. Anyone remember “The Reflection of Perfection” Mark Jindrak? Team Angle Mark Jindrak? Yeah…

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 04:48 PM

Lance Storm wasn’t completely buried coming out of WCW either. An IC Title run, a tag team run or two. Yeah, they did the “boring” stuff with him. But he was never on the outs all the way with the company and they did give him a run as an agent. Pretty sure they “like” him.

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 04:50 PM

I put O’Haire and Jindrak into the Mike Awesome category. They’re guys who can shine in a certain context, but when you really try to get the fully fleshed pro-wrestler out of them, you’re going to end up disappointed.

People really wanted Awesome to be a monster killer in the WWF, but he was about the same size as Billy Gunn. And Billy Gunn looked more jacked.

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 04:57 PM

I’m pretty sure they put Piper with O’Haire because they were really worried about O’Haire’s live talking.

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 05:14 PM

Lol, I just listened to Cornette’s bit on him again. Says those Devil’s Advocate vignettes were some of the most striking things ever presented on a wrestling program, and they were wrestling’s version of Milli Vanilli. If he had to do them live, people would have been committing harakiri in the stands.

Fucking brutal.

Sepholio 04-26-2022 06:24 PM

Sean O'haire was arrested like 5 or 6 times in my area for various assaults. Such a shame.

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 06:35 PM

His Wikipedia makes mention of several of them, some against domestic partners, but I’m fairly certain it does not cover them all.

Mr. Nerfect 04-26-2022 06:37 PM

There was an incident where he claims he was attacked, but witnesses actually stood up for the other guy who beat the shit out of O’Haire apparently.

Also, the guy is kind of notorious for being a piece of shit at public appearances and stuff. Things like autograph signings. Even if the talent was actually there in full, at some point you’re pushing a guy that isn’t good for PR.

Sepholio 04-26-2022 06:46 PM

lol I was at the place that incident happened at 2 days ago. He definitely started that fight and the other guy finished it.

drave 04-27-2022 08:12 AM

If O' Haire had half a brain, he would have stayed outside there. Butterbean had nearly no reach, and unlike Tyson, wasn't good at moving in and STAYING in. If matches went beyond a few swings, Butterbean was trash.

A great spectacle of his time, and I even recall him being in a boxing game on Sega Genesis. Flipped out because after you beat the champ, he walks in from the "crowd" and says "I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!" And little me freaked out of a cuss word in a video game (at the time).

Jordan 04-27-2022 08:16 AM

Does anyone here actually watch MMA? We could make a thread to share bets and discussions.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-27-2022 08:17 AM

I keep up with results out of habit but the prevailing attitudes and philosophies of the sport have turned me off

Jordan 04-27-2022 08:21 AM

Just like rasslin, if you don't like the big promotion, the alternatives provide enough content to satisfy! Bellator can be hit or miss but when it hits it's big, PFL is on a similar level to Bellator and now you can watch Khabib's promotion Eagle FC for free and they are running quality shows in Miami.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-27-2022 08:27 AM

Honestly at my old age I’m less fond of watching dudes inflicting bodily harm upon one another. Especially all the brain damage.

UFC is alright, but has become more about the "spectacle and politics". I don't care.

MAN BONK OTHER MAN WITH FIST!!! WE CHEER!!!! BONK!!!!

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-27-2022 08:40 AM

I dunno, PRIDE was a lot about spectacle and politics. But that’s what made it so great. It embraces the pro wrestling influences of MMA, pretty much making every event must-see... and I was a late adopter—only getting into MMA because of TUF and Griffin v Bonnar.

They understood how to develop mythos and lore for their fighters. I remember seeing Fedor’s ground and pound for the first time and not being able to comprehend how someone could punch so fucking hard. He seemed larger than life and honestly like a titan. Nowadays, the guys are superior in every way, but they don’t feel like it. They seem human and boring and it’s because Dana denigrates his fighters so he doesn’t have to pay them.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-27-2022 08:41 AM

PRIDE was like the wild fucking west and I miss it. Fighting needs more Yakuza-based corruption to make it great again.

I most definitely wasn't aware of it then. I enjoyed their rules a LOT more. That's what did it for me. The first time I saw some dude go down to the ground, and his opponent did a fucking jumping stomp?!!?! More of that. More of being able to still beat the shit outta your opponent regardless of thier position because its THEIR job to protect themselves at all times.

Jordan 04-27-2022 09:04 AM

I much prefer a cage to the ring. The ropes always make things sloppy when clinch work gets to that area. With a cage there is nowhere to go so the action can take a transition to ground game or strikes.

Jordan 04-27-2022 09:06 AM

Pride was great for it's time but going back to watch a full show can be a bit of a chore. The level of training is so much higher now so you get to see a lot more technique in fights. When it comes to old MMA I prefer the first 10 or so UFC events. I like to see the legit clash of styles and the total crazy shit show nature of those events.

Also I don't think I really saw Pride events live, at least not until near the very end. So I was always a UFC guy. Even though early UFC had so many duds and fights fall out, champions leave undefended etc... Still loved it.

drave 04-27-2022 09:07 AM

Conversely, fighters routinely use the cage for leverage, which is weak.

Jordan 04-27-2022 09:07 AM

Strikeforce events also fun to watch back.

Yeah there is that too, but I don't think of it as weak I think of it as a better transition opportunity than the ropes offer. Generally leads to more excitement. But yes of course we can cite examples of stalled fights clinched against the cage.

I like having that "corner" of sorts to trap someone in.

Jerry Lawler was 100% my favorite Bret Hart feud ever. I remember sometime around Christmas and he did a promo something along the lines of:

"Bret Hart is probably crying in his room listening to his new Bon Jobi album". Not to mention the whole thing where he heckled Hart's parents while Hart was having a match.

Do yourself a favor and skip the boring in-ring work. 3:46 is where the REAL entertainment starts.

I understand the Best Hart hate for a lot of the shit that comes out of his mouth (I.E. arrogance, whining, blaming everyone else for everything) but you have to give credit where it is due....he was an amazing wrestler! I'm not saying that means you have to be a fan or even enjoy him but don't let your biased take anything away from him

After 6 months with Impact, The IInspiration have announced that they've left the company and will be stepping away from wrestling indefinitely.

Both are making a killing on BrandArmy (an OnlyFans alternative), they're said to be pulling in around $25-50k per month from their respective fan sites. So honestly, at that point why even bother wrestling?

There's also always the chance that one or both of them are preggers, or trying to be. Hence, leaving the word "indefinitely".

I'm not saying he's wrong but he is definitely arrogant. It's a pretty well known fact in the industry that he is full of himself and is said to take himself more "seriously" than most. I'm not disputing his in ring talent or psychology as I am a big fan of Bret myself but if I had to rate him on a meter between arrogant and humble, he would be leaning far on the arrogant side.
