The boss at Blizzard has an interesting interview yesterday where he said the main reason Starcraft Ghost was canceled was due to the sudden boom in popularity of World of Warcraft.

Original plan was the create a spin-off game from the Starcraft series that involved stealth and a 3rd person perspective for consoles (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox). At the same time, Blizzard was working on World of Warcraft but still had enough people to work on both projects at once.

Then Blizzard started to work on Starcraft II which stretched their resources and couldn't get the time needed to fix the issues with SC Ghost development.

When World of Warcraft became a huge success, even more strain was placed on the company so the decision was to kill off SC Ghost while keeping Starcraft II development on schedule.

GameFreak has no intentions of ever making a console version of their Pokemon RPG series since they feel the series belongs on a handheld and RPGs have been more popular this generation on handhelds than on consoles (at least in Japan).

Nintendo usually leaves GameFreak alone when they make Pokemon games so its very unlikely Nintendo will want to push a console project any time soon.

New screens for the upcoming Batman Arkham City game show off some characters in the game such as the Joker in this batch.

Also teased is an image with a Black Mask statue which could hint at him being a villain in this game or just a big tease similar to the Riddler in the first game.

Series creator Lorne Lanning and the team at Just Add Water have announced that an HD remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is in production. An interview in the March issue of EGM (via Facebook) outlines the plans for the game, nicknamed "Abe HD."

"It's basically Abe's Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer," said Lanning. "So the way Just Add Water wants to approach it, we thought was very smart; they are not trying to reinvent any wheels. It's like, 'Can we make that experience in a new engine, with new tech, in the old way?'"

This is slightly different from the previously announced development of Stranger's Wrath for PlayStation Network. Abe HD seems to be a full remake from the ground up, while Lanning says Stranger is "the same game, but being redone." A version of Stranger's Wrath for XBLA is also ready for release, but Lanning says the game keeps being rejected. It's possible this is due to the size limitations we heard about last year.

A team at DICE showed EA a prototype that was "declined", according to a Eurogamer Sweden translation of a Press 2 Play TV report.

"Patrick [Soderlund - EA driving and shooting game boss] acknowledges that Mirror's Edge didn't match up to their expectations regarding sales, and that has stopped the sequel that has been in development," declared the report, published originally in December.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance. The project has been stopped - involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

Presumably the extra development is going into Battlefield 3 - EA's well publicised attempt at wrestling shooter supremacy from the Call of Duty series.

Patrick Soderlund confirmed last summer that "a small team" at DICE was 'on' a new Mirror's Edge game. Eurogamer pressed him on that point last November.

"Mirror's Edge is an IP that's close to my heart and EA's as well. It was a bold move from us. I'm proud we made it. It obviously didn't reach the commercial success we wanted, even though it wasn't bad at all," he said.

"I still think as a company we're going to talk about it when we're going to talk about it. What I can say is, we haven't buried it. We're absolutely continuing to support Mirror's Edge as an IP. When we're ready to talk about it, we'll talk about it."

EA Games boss Frank Gibeau went on record a few weeks later to say that the execution of Mirror's Edge "fell short". "There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either," he said.

Mirror's Edge, a Parkour-inspired first-person action game, was released late 2009 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Despite an 8/10 recommendation from Eurogamer, the eye-catching title failed to, well, catch punters' eyes - entering the UK all-formats chart at 20.

Eurogamer has requested comment from EA.

Drakul 02-17-2011 12:47 AM

Yes, let's stop developing a somewhat original idea in favour of another sandy, muddy generic army shooter.

It's not like EA doesn't have billions of dollars. They could easily afford to finish Mirrors Edge 2, even if it just became a download only title.

I really wish this army shooter bubble would just burst already. How many times can you pay $60/£40 for a "new" game about being a US soldier running through the middle east, shooting people before you realise "Hang on...I've played a game just like this before. 16 times in the last 5 years!" ?

If it's not a US army man running through the middle east, it's a US space marine running through another world that looks like ours but painted a greeny-blue. If the developers are feeling really wild they'll throw a jungle style area in the game.

I couldn't even look at Red Faction Guerilla after finishing the story because the sight of the bland browny red world had gotten so face-cuttingly dull. The gameplay and story was good but an eviroment like that just put me off eventually. No idea how anyone can play brown/grey shooters over and over and over again and not get sick of the sight of them.

G 02-17-2011 12:56 AM

It's not about them not having money to make it, it's about them being doubtful it will turn a profit.

Kalyx triaD 02-17-2011 01:00 AM

In EA's defense I read GameInformer's cover story for Battlefield 3 and if there's one military shooter you should try out for the long haul make it that one. Also Dice, the guys making it, aren't pretentious assholes and they're actually trying to make a fun game out of the military shooter sub-genre.

Shit, Khuntry likes Battlefield, and does he strike you as military FPS guy with a stack of CoD's and Killzones? Battlefield is the shit. My realistic shooter of choice.

Drakul 02-17-2011 01:03 AM

It already has a decent fan base size so that's a few sales right there. I think if they made it a downloadable game, like Kalyx said, and fixed the problems other people had with the game and maybe advertise it a little bit better it could get a good decent profit.

Not all games can explode onto the scene and become classics. I think Mirrors Edge is a slow bloomer. If they stuck with it and just tried to spend as little as possible, which I know would be hard with me suggesting advertising it more, it could do a little better.

Kalyx triaD 02-17-2011 01:03 AM

That doesn't change the fact that EA canned one of the more interesting games in recent times, I'm saying some good things are coming out of the military shooter thing.

But they should totally make a download only Mirror's Edge. It'll the edge off, and with the right vision it could make easier profit.

I remember day dreaming about a Mirror's Edge 2 with absolutely no guns and multiplayer (parkour CTF on fuckin rooftops!) and an expansion of the storyline for those who cared. The first game had leaderboards for ghost time trial races that was actually addictive and fresh - that counts for something. I think EA is being harsh on the game not being a blockbuster. It's an annoying trend these days.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:21 AM

Two Worlds getting a sequel, but not Mirror's Edge, makes me pretty fucking furious, tbh.

Emperor Smeat 02-17-2011 01:26 AM

EA already said from last year their main goals are to make games that will have multiplayer even if it doesn't need it (ex. Dead Space 2), their main priority is shooters (ex. CoD killer) and sports, and more involvement in the PS3 (#1 in sales for them last year).

Mirror's Edge 1 was pretty successful as a phone game so it might also make sense they couldn't get a good phone version of the game ready with ME 2.

EA is also similar to Activision and a few others who want instant mega sales instead of slower burners like Capcom and Nintendo.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 01:27 AM

It is also now hard to read on an iPod.

Kinda pompous, imo. And I never agreed with 'focus test' model for games, but then again I view games as artistic medium for the most part.

In any case the day of the publisher will end and this shit will lessen.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 01:37 AM

Video games aren't art, they are toys.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:43 AM

I know you aren't known for being subtle in your troll attempts BDC, but that's obvious even for you.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 01:45 AM

I am not trolling, video games are not art. Occasionally one has a glimmer of artistic merit, but the media as a whole is not art.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:56 AM

In that case I am not touching this argument with a ten foot pole.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:01 AM

I have discussed this topic at length on other sites and tried to bring it up here to minimal success in it's own threads. Video games are not art. They can be artistic, but most art isn't fapped to by people who proclaim it as such. I mean literally jerked off too. And i mean Kylax makes threads about which big tittied bitch video game chick is the hottest then turns around and calls it art. Either it is art or it is fap material and toys.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 02:07 AM

I am going to save us both a lot of time and say "agree to disagree", because this debate can go nowhere, since we clearly have differing opinions on what art is.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:13 AM

Art is something that is respected by the makers and consumers. Video games as a whole are not well respected by the makers as it is clear the AAA game industry rather make generic knock offs than original games. And they are not respected by the consumers who for the most part jerk off to the big tits and curse loudly as the kill people they never met over xbl.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:15 AM

And yes by my criteria I don't consider every movie to be art, nor every song, nor every drawling. I just want to know what you define art as.

Ex Bungie Employee Spills Some Beans:

Quote:

Bungie's follow-up to the Halo series is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, according to a source claiming to have knowledge of the game's development. That sci-fi shooter is currently named Destiny, he says, Bungie's original post-Halo franchise.

That source also claims to be a recently terminated contractor, part of a group of an estimated 30 non-salaried employees let go from Bungie. It's not uncommon for contract and temp employees to be let go after a project completion on the scale of Halo: Reach, but that source cited claims of "budgetary concerns" and alleges unfair treatment.

The ex-Bungie employee says that Destiny, codenamed "Tiger," will run on a new Bungie-developed graphics engine and feature unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology. It was also bluntly likened to "WoW in space."

Bungie creative director Joseph Staten hinted at last year's Game Developers Conference Online that the independent studio might be building an online persistent world. Bemoaning that Halo players spent mere hours in the developer's games, Staten wondered aloud "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?"

The creators of Halo and Marathon are currently working on a multi-platform project for Activision Blizzard, part of a ten year publishing agreement.

Kotaku has contacted Bungie and Activision Publishing representatives seeking comment and clarification and will update with any response.
More wood to the fire. Eagerly awaiting Bungie's next series. And hey, this could mean a new MMO on 360, something I've been waiting on since Champions got canned.

Indeed.

That was one of the things I loved about Mirror's Edge. It was challenging, it was different and I don't know about anyone else but the sense of achievement I got from completing a chapter was amazing. Especially chapter 6.

The story was really good too. Something which I think is missing from the majority of games these days. A good story.

I was really looking forward to Mirror's Edge. It gave me something to look forward too as TimeSplitters 4 got canned. But seeing as Crytek are "in talks" with publishers now, I guess it's not all bad, but I do have a feeling that TimeSplitters 4 won't happen though.

It just annoys me that all the enjoyable, original games don't see the light of day but games that are just mere clones of their predecessors are out yearly. Not counting games like FIFA, Madden or WWE. They fall into a different category of sorts.

I guess all we have left to enjoy along with Mirror's Edge, is Mirror's Edge 2D. :(

For some reason, the actual Mirror's Edge 2D website isn't working.

That is not a definition. What is your definition of art? What sorts of criteria does a work have to meet to be art? You can't say what ever I deem as art is art because that is meaningless are your argument is null.
