I’ve already seen people say “No one actually thought AEW would win. This is just people making an invisible enemy.” No, TK made it a very visible enemy. And lost. And no, it was not a great night for wrestling.

I was thinking yesterday as I had my morning coffee how potentially awesome a heel run for Goldberg could be right now. You never think about it because a heel run was so incredibly stupid in 2000. But imagine a super-rich asshole super-athlete who has all these special requirements written into his contract to protect his greatest assets — his body.

It’d be pretty funny to hear him ragging on fans who want their Superstars to break their necks to prove themselves. He doesn’t get paid by the hour, he gets paid by the win and he’s twice the age of some of these fans, but twice the man and their girlfriends know it.

Would be totally fine with that Goldberg winning the WWE Title. The first wrestler in history to win a World Title in four different decades. “Who’s a flash in the pan now?!”

Heel Goldberg vs. Big E for the WWE Title at WrestleMania, please.

GD 10-17-2021 07:18 PM

That'd make Goldberg the oldest WWE Champion in history. Even Mr. McMahon was younger than him when he won the WWF Championship.

Mr. Nerfect 10-17-2021 07:38 PM

I’ve got this weird feeling in my bones that the WWE are going to renegotiate with FOX and get SmackDown upped to 3 hours, possibly starting at 7pm. This would get them more money and push Rampage to being the 4th hour of wrestling that night, hurting them.

There’s been some talk that they will try to get a third hour on Fox Sports 1 after SmackDown, but I think the smarter move is to go earlier.

Sepholio 10-17-2021 07:39 PM

I don't really want another Goldberg title reign ever, but if we get one it would def be better by a wide margin were he a heel.

At the same time I think I'd also rather have him as the oldest WWE champion ever instead of Vince. But Vince having the record is probably about as close to a guarantee as you can get that no one will ever break it.

They should absolutely go earlier. Going any later will lead to a drop off of viewers for the 3rd hour, regardless of any impact Rampage might have on it.

I love me some Goldberg, but the unfortunate reality is that the live audience that consider themselves smart have been effected by diminishing returns. It’s been 5 years (!) since Goldberg did the stuff with Brock, which was magic. It’s hard to promote a part-timer who comes in for title matches every now and then to be this super-likeable entity in a world where “deserving it” matters to a vocal section of the fandom.

I think it would work if Goldberg did more stuff like the Ziggler program, or he set his sights on a loud-mouth like Miz. But even then, you’re just bringing a guy out from mothballs to do shtick, which even if it is cool to a lot of people, is going to make that audience segment groan. At first he was massively over, but then you got the feeling that the audience was TRYING to hate it.

As a heel it would be wildly fresh. Goldberg is at a stage where he doesn’t give a fuck (nor should he), and he’s actually a pretty decent talker by default, because they just let him go out there and be. I think he would absolutely kill a spoiled star main event run gimmick. Kind of like Douchy Dave Batista, but probably without the skinny jeans.

From his end, he’s got a cushy deal now. But if he cares about “legacy,” if he wants to get his son into the business, and even staying in ring shape — I think a more condensed and temporary run, instead of pacing things out with scarce appearances over years, could actually be amazing shit.

With Vince — I don’t think he actually would give a shit about being the oldest anything, honestly. He’s an idiosyncratic individual. He hates being mentioned in Hall of Fame speeches and has even made it known to people he doesn’t want to go in himself, even though, objectively, he’s a no-brainer top billing. If someone in shape can carry the load, I think he’d love to be knocked off the totem pole there.

That would definitely be the smart thing to do. Rampage should be going 7-8, but they don’t have the weight right now. Lock down that hour so they can’t take it and get ahead of you. Draw out the evening and while 3 hours would hurt anyway, it’s not going later. Could even still sit around 1.8-2.2 million viewers. The first hour might even be higher and draw up the rating.

It seems FOX airs “local broadcasting” at 7pm. Don’t know how valuable that is to them. WWE could realistically make a great offer there for a 8, maybe 9 figures.

re: Goldberg

If he got in real ring shape where he could go for more than 3-5 minutes doing the nuclear signature move overload then I would absolutely be down for him to have another little run. Him showing up every few months as it is doesn't really bother me, it's how fast he gets gassed. I know he's getting up there but he could absolutely be in much better shape with a little cardio training.

I also think working some programs with people smaller than a Roman Reigns, Lesnar, Lashley etc would go a long ways towards putting some of that shine back on him. He looks like he really struggles to lift some of these "bigger" guys. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a program against AJ tbh; I think AJ could absolutely pull a gem out of Goldberg and having him always looking over his shoulder for Omos would definitely add to the appeal, especially when he finally spears the big man into oblivion during his showdown with AJ.

I fantasy booked an AJ/Goldberg program for a WrestleMania once. AJ went into full delusional heel mode and talked about how he’s the greatest wrestler from Georgia ever. He brought back the Big Gold Belt as a symbol of his greatness. Goldberg took issue with that and AJ would bump around like a speedball for him. I’m totally down for that. :y:

With guys like Goldberg and Lesnar, I get the perception is that they’re “lazy” or just cashing in or whatever, but I actually think the time is now for both of them to make real runs of it while they can. I’m not a trained wrestler or anything, but I actually think (especially with Goldberg) that doing a little more could actually take a lot of the stress off. Being out there two or three times a year is so damn sparse that I think it could actually be harder than being a guy who works 12-14 times a year or whatever.

With Brock, if they’re building up to him and Gable Steveson, it makes sense for him to be a big deal, and maybe not anything past that (unless he really wants to). So if I’m WWE, I kind of go “all in” on Brock to hype that. More dates in the short-term. Maybe a long-term deal he’ll get paid on way after the fact. I use him on television in matches, because that’s “special” now (his match against Kofi was nothing for a reason). It could help boost ratings and also shake the “Brock only does big shows...yawn” stigma about him. Put the Universal Title on him and do six-man tags on SmackDown with him and The Viking Raiders or New Day against Roman & The Usos. It may not draw in three years, but if you’re done with Brock by and large after Steveson, why not use him to prop things up short-term? You can see life past him now in a way that you couldn’t before.

A thing I love about Minoru Suzuki is that the two big out-of-wrestling passions I know of his are fashion (I believe he owns a clothing store in Harajuku) and One Piece, one of the longest-running and most popular anime/manga series of all time. And it just so happened that the creator of One Piece also has a fondness for classic pro wrestling, which led to Suzuki appearing as a character that's basically just himself under a slightly different name in one of the specials.

WWE has decided to monetise Talking Smack which is going to air after SmackDown and Bryan Alvarez is already being an ass about it on Twitter.

WWE putting more content on the air for more money is not “Weird.” It’s not predatory towards AEW and doesn’t mean they’re a major concern. WWE likes money. Yeah, fucking weird.

Eh, I don’t really remember full episodes to compare. Daniel Bryan was great on there though. Paul Heyman is always phenomenal. He and Edge did some great stuff building to WrestleMania.

Some people are correctly calling out AEW fanboys having a cry about Talking Smack being on FS1 next week by pointing out that whenever the WWE gets moved to FS1, FOX sweetens the deal by giving them extra content on FS1. This is pretty standard for the WWE/FOX relationship, but AEW hardcores have to make it all about them.

Can you blame them? The dumb AEW owner believes the same shit.

"Oh Vince aggressively added an extra 30 minutes to Smackdown to hurt us!". Vince McMahon can not to tell TV companies when to air his shows. If Fox wanted an extra half hour of better ratings on FS1 then they would normally get by adding an extra 30 minutes of Smackdown, then there will be an extra 30 minutes of Smackdown.

Such a bullshit spin by Tony to rally fans.

Undertaker is still under some sort of contract and seemed to be a big part of the Saudi deal. He’s probably paid out the ass to show up and do publicity things. He may be on the Saudi show in some capacity, or off air.

It's got to be one of the most random appearances ever

He was paid to make an appearance by the team. He had to wait an uncomfortably long time to meet LeBron.

I was there for his Nitro debut. Made an instant fan out of me. Guy was in one of the greatest cruiserweight divisions of all time for only like 5 minutes, but people still talk about him to this day. Says a lot.

Sepholio 10-21-2021 11:56 AM

Still remember his match vs THE JOOSE BABY to open Nitro one time. Was like the best WCW cruiser match ever.

I’m not trying to be an ass here, but doesn’t it sound like the guy is always hurt? I know he was out with illness at one point, but hasn’t he had two major injuries in 2021? He’s getting to Samoa Joe levels.

Fignuts 10-21-2021 04:41 PM

He's getting older. You can only take insane bumps for so long before it catches up to you. Same thing is starting to happen to Will Ospreay, though he at least modified his style a bit after moving up to heavyweight.

Supreme Olajuwon 10-22-2021 02:01 PM

Today I learned in that infamous Doug Gilbert promo where he aired out Jerry Lawler raping a 13 year old girl, Doug was working as the face on that show. Yikes.

Bad News Gertner 10-22-2021 02:08 PM

Lol yeah. He and Brian Christopher were doing "worked shoots" on each other and Brian said something about Doug's family that really upset him.

I don't really recall the previous injuries as I don't follow that promotion very much, only occasionally watch some matches here and there. He did have pneumonia I think back in the summer though which sidelined him for a couple months, and he wasn't fully back to strength when they brought him back.

This particular injury doesn't seem like it will be too major in the long run though. He apparently wanted to finish the match but the ref decided against that and called it off. Dunno if you've seen it, but he did the Phoenix Splash from the top and Okada rolled out of the way and when Ibushi braced himself for the miss something happened to his arm. It was speculated that he had broken his arm at first, but now it seems as though he just had a fluke dislocation of his shoulder. Will prob miss a couple months of action I imagine.

I “respect” Ibushi. He’s clearly over and whatever. His style has always been “too much” for me though. As a main event guy, he’s several major steps behind Tanahashi and Okada. Haven’t seen that much of what he’s done in the past year though.

It would suit him well to stop acting like he’s 30 and trying to get over and more like he’s 40 and is over though.

If it’s a freak thing, I get it. Thanks for the details. It just seems like banking on him right now is just too unwieldy though. If he makes Wrestle Kingdom, I’d be all for him going over deserter Kenny Omega in a match that a lot of people want to see, but I don’t think I’d use him near the top of cards right now. He’s so stop-start.

If Omega isn’t an option because of Covid or whatever, I’d put someone like Jay White or ZSJ over him to build them as Okada contenders. Maybe even just a solid win for Tanahashi to get him back into the picture.

I had only seen the brief clip of him saying the rape part and then laughing about it and like yeah total heel move. But seeing the whole segment where the crowd was cheering him was so bizarre. And he also accused the promoter of smoking crack backstage! What a babyface!

Yeah, Ibushi isn't in Tanahashi and Okadas league. Never seen him branch out and tell wildly different stories across multiple matches the way previous aces have. Ibushi is certainly a spectacle to watch, but you know what you're getting every time.

Fightful reports Charlotte was told to leave the building and Becky worked a dark match post SD. Vince was apparently livid Charlotte stormed out of gorilla without speaking to him after Becky/Charlotte's shouting match.

Honestly, more interesting than anything happening onscreen in the 'E.

slik 10-23-2021 01:26 PM

Sounds like it was Charlotte's fault...she didn't think WWE was being fair to Flair and she didn't want to do the title exchange segment so she changed the segment live from what was scripted and said she didn't mean to 'drop the belt'...TalkSport reporting Lynch has had heat with Flair for a few years since Flair got mad about about Becky making fun of her previously enormous fake breasts a few years ago...

Sepholio 10-23-2021 01:32 PM

I'd be mad about people making fun of my looks too if I was Charlotte. After all the money she has paid for plastic surgeries and enhancements to come out of it looking infinitely worse has to be aggravating af on it's own without everyone pointing it out.

Sepholio 10-23-2021 01:36 PM

Also funny she thinks the WWE is making her look weak when she's a 14 time champion lol. No one else even close to that. They've set her up as the final boss and ultimate foil to any other champion for YEARS now. Her ego is getting too big and now she is going to act like a whiny baby about it. Oh well, guess she can tie daddys record over in AEW.

To be fair, just because a company puts a loads of belts on you doesn’t mean they’re booking you right. That being said, AEW can have her. It won’t matter. Nothing there matters.

Oh I agree they are booking her wrong. But making her look weak? That's laughable. She's by far booked stronger than any other woman in the fed and has been ever since she got called up.

It's the best for both companies honestly. AEW gets a wrestler far better than anyone else in their division, WWE gets rid of the queen of ego and makes her the competitions problem.

#1-norm-fan 10-23-2021 05:57 PM

She didn’t say “fuck this company” and walk out when they had her follow up ending Asuka’s streak by jobbing clean to Carmella the next month. I can’t imagine it’s gotten worse than that.
