There will be a new DLC for TES V: Skyrim, called Hearthfire, released one week from today on Sept. 4th. Basically they're giving you some creation tools to create your own buildings and put display cases, alchemy labs and bunches of other things in it, and just all kinds of madness. See the game's thread for the announcement trailer. It sums things up much better than I ever could.

A new game mode for multiplayer and details about a playable demo were recently revealed by Epic Games for Gears of War Judgement.

Previous games in the Gears series only focused on team-based modes for multiplayer but Epic Games announces Gears of War Judgement will include a free-for-all deathmatch mode as a new mode for the game and series itself.

The company also announced a playable demo will be shown at the upcoming PAX Prime expo this weekend with 2 brand new maps to be shown off in the demo. The demo will mostly focus on the new free-for-all mode for the game.

GONDOLA – The Coastal Villa Apartments are part of the exclusive Halvo community located in the prestigious Agora foothills. Residents enjoy a host of interior upgrades, and each unit features an ocean view from a private patio or balcony. This quiet, gated community is located only a short gondola ride from the renowned shops and businesses of our active and thriving coastal community.

LIBRARY – The Alexiy Desipich Memorial Library is not a library in the traditional sense, but rather an archive of important documents surrounding his life, career, and personal interests. An avid historian, politician, and philosopher, Desipich is most remembered as the father and creator of the Austere Canon, the basis for the Coalition of Ordered Governments, which was shaped around eight guiding principles: Order, Diligence, Purity, Labor, Honor, Loyalty, Faith, and Humility.
The game was also announced to still be on track for its March 19, 2013 release date for the Xbox 360.

From yesterday's Nintendo Direct live stream, Level 5 reveals the Professor Layton series will end with "Professor Layton Choubunmei to A no Isan."

While it wasn't revealed if the game will have a release outside of Japan in the future, the 6th and final game for the series will be for the 3DS and will end the Layton storyline.

Level 5 did tease the series itself might still be made in the future either as spin-offs or under a new playable character but the main series will end once the final game is released.

Level 5 also won't begin focusing on the final game until after "Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask" and "Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney" are both released for the 3DS with the later set for a late 2012 release date.

What you really need to do is get those DLC characters in sfxt so we can throw down. I know a bunch of other people bought them too, but it's like they played the first few days and dropped the game again.

Also, do you have the close quarters maps for battlefield 3? We need to squad up in that.

I do not have either DLC, and I like the Close Quarters maps a lot. Miss Battlefield 3 in general.

Kalyx triaD 08-30-2012 07:23 AM

Wait... what?! What is this?

Extreme Angle 08-30-2012 07:46 AM

New game i'm guessing, just got announced at MGS 25th anniversary event.
Also a mobile game and a movie been announced.

About the Game

Quote:

Attendees of this evening's Metal Gear 25th anniversary event in Japan are taking to Twitter with commentary on "Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes," which appears to be a brand new stealth game starring the ever-stalwart Snake.

The demo reportedly showed Snake infiltrating a rain-drenched compound, avoiding search lights, offing a guard, driving a jeep and then summoning a helicopter in a seamless, open-world environment. The description meshes with designer Hideo Kojima's cryptic commentary on "Project Ogre," which he described as "very free."

We can likely expect a more formal demonstration and less secretive video from Kojima Productions in the near future. For now, the Twitter consensus paints the Fox Engine, which powered the demo of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, as something deserving of your oohs and aahs.
Social Ops
Quote:

Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, an upcoming smartphone game, at this morning's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event. GREE chief operating officer Yoshikazu Tanaka unveiled the game's first trailer, showcasing its 3D graphics in the Unity engine, before announcing a worldwide release later this year.

According to Andriasang, Social Ops revisits stories from previous MGS games, features a card-based battle system, and has Mother Base development options reminiscent of Peace Walker. Attendees at September's Tokyo Game Show should find out, as a playable build is scheduled to be there. In the meantime, Famitsu has a couple of screenshots to check out.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.c...ops640x360.jpg
And the Movie...

Quote:

You'll have to be more specific in your snide commentary the next time you think to call Metal Gear Solid a movie. There will be a proper film based on the popular Konami property, said X-Men and Spider-Man producer Avi Arad, who announced the project at a special Metal Gear 25th anniversary event in Japan.

Metal Gear Solid designer and figurehead Hideo Kojima hinted at a film project back in March, suggesting that the franchise in its current state wouldn't be quite compatible with Hollywood. The extent of his participation is currently unclear, as is the film's production schedule, plot and likelihood of relying on nanobots to explain all the weird-ass things that happen.

The film will come courtesy of Columbia Pictures, and be praised and lambasted in equal measure for its use of 40-minute long "audience participation scenes."http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.c...ad_530x350.jpg

Kalyx triaD 08-30-2012 07:56 AM

Good luck with a movie, but that game sounds interesting. They experimented free form gameplay in the first two chapters of MGS4. Wonder if this will be a straight sequel.

Sega reveals some details regarding the "Escape" multiplayer mode from developer Gearbox's upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The mode supports 8 players with two teams competing each other with specific goals depending on which side you are one. The Marines have a set period of time to escape from a level or map while the other side called the Xenomorphs has just the goal of wiping all the Marines out.

Aliens: Colonial Marines still set for a February 12, 2013 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC while the Wii U version arrives at a later TBA date.

That doesn't even sound remotely like a Final Fantasy game. All elements tying it to the series must be DLC.

They should make a game called OssMan Returns Final Fantasy XIII to the store because it sucks

Kalyx triaD 09-01-2012 04:44 PM

Anyway it's too late for me to experience this end of a trilogy. FF13 didn't keep me long enough. Looks pretty, though.

Ultra Mantis 09-01-2012 05:44 PM

I actually preferred XIII to XII, but neither is in the top half of Final Fantasy games. I found Lightning to be the least interesting member of XIII/2's cast though, even when you consider Snow has absolutely no character development over two games.

After debuting Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes during Konami's 25th anniversary party for the series last week, Hideo Kojima reveals at PAX 2012 he would love to make a Metal Gear Solid game in the future where The Boss is the main character.

While he doesn't favor making spin-off games for the series itself, he wouldn't have a problem making one if it involves The Boss as the main character. The Boss herself is referenced as the mentor of Naked Snake's (Big Boss) in Metal Gear Solid 3.

Quote:

“We’ve talked previously about a game featuring The Boss as a main character. This is something I’d really love to make,” he said.
He also mentioned the future of the series itself could eventually move away from the Solid storyline with hints of the possibility to a sequel for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance being made and as a potential new starting point.

Quote:

“If it works out well, I really would like to work with Platinum games on a sequel,” he said.

During a developer panel at PAX 2012, Gearbox announces they have separated the Brother in Arms series from the Furious 4 installment and instead will now treat the game as a standalone new IP project.

The decision was due to the game no longer fitting into the Brother in Arms series universe after the constant development changes had been done.

Quote:

Randy Ptichford said that as the game's developers "pushed the gameplay loop, they got into a place that got away from the core" of the Brothers In Arms franchise. Since then, Pitchford said, "it's evolved even farther, and it needed to be unshackled" from the brand.
While Gearbox didn't reveal any new details regarding some of the recent changes to the game, they do have plans to "reintroduce" the game during a Gearbox Community Day which will occur later this year at Dallas, Texas.

Meh, I don't know about the rest of ya, but I'd rather Zelda go back to Twilight Princess graphics and controls. Jury's out on the map size.

Kalyx triaD 09-04-2012 09:32 PM

Twilight Princess graphics didn't age as well as... say Wind Waker. I don't mind an expressive style or a happy middle ground. Very interested in the game world and how open the gameplay may be for it. Skyward seemed episode and linear, though it experimented with things I hope to see return (weapon maintenance and potion mixing).

alvarado52 09-04-2012 11:04 PM

I think that graphically the more 'real' a game tries to aim towards the less it ages well. I see games like MvC (or other cartoonish sprite games), Wind Waker, and tend to frown less on their looks than popping in something even semi-current like Mass Effect 1

Kalyx triaD 09-04-2012 11:08 PM

That's the double edge sword of realistic visuals, it can only be enjoyed that console cycle (sometimes less than that). They can never be timeless to your eyes. That's not a bad thing, I just don't find realistic visuals interesting at all.

Fignuts 09-05-2012 01:22 AM

After constant complaints and ridicule over their "DRM" policy for PC games, Ubisoft announces they have officially decided to ditch the setup.

According to the company, they've been planning and gradually changing their DRM policy since last June from an "always on" to a one time online registration needed. The process will be complete once Assassin's Creed III is released.

Quote:

“We have listened to feedback,” said Ubisoft worldwide director for online games Stephanie Perottiand, ”and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time online activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline.”
The changes were meant to ease complaints over the "always on" DRM causing the single player portion of a game to be unplayable anytime Ubisoft servers went down or had issues.

Ubisoft thinks the days of massive "blockbuster Triple-A" games is nearing an end due to the gaming industry shifting to a new development model.

In an interview with Edge magazine, the creative director for Assassin's Creed III, Alex Hutchinson, believes his game will be part of the last set of massive "triple-A" status games.

His basis revolves around the idea the gaming industry is moving away from massive projects which takes years, multiple studios, and hundreds of employees to a new model which can produce games in a quicker time at a smaller scale.

Quote:

"We're the last of the dinosaurs. We're still the monster triple-A game with very large teams [and] multiple studios helping out on different bits. There are fewer and fewer of these games being made, especially as the middle has fallen out," he said.
His feelings on the subject have been expressed similarly by other people in the industry such as Cliff Bleszinski who feels the rising costs in game development will hurt the quantity of "Triple A" games during the next generation of consoles. Bleszinski believes the industry might be near the point where only the really big companies can afford to produce massive "blockbuster" games.

This is kind of funny, when Epic Games was having a tantrum about the new gen of consoles not pushing far enough and coming out fast enough. And while I'm too lazy to check, I thought Cliff Bizarro was onboard with said tantrum.

That being said, I won't be sad to see "Triple A" gaming collapse in on itself. The soaring costs are one of the reasons profit-obsessed companies are trying to whack us in every possible way, and that's mostly been furthered by a dev cost arm's race.

Also, it'll piss off the PC crybabies who whine that 720p is "unplayable garbage."

According to a source close to Vivendi states the company is still going ahead with plans for an eventual buyout although recent stipulations are making it a lot harder for a deal to be done.

Vivendi is still demanding an offer of around 10 billion euros along with the inability to purchase their assets separate as part of any deal to buy out the company. Activision and Blizzard which are both owned by Vivendi are being valued at around 8 billion euros within the offer itself.

Quote:

Philippe Capron, Vivendi finance director, last week claimed that the entertainment empire had ruled out a "straight break-up" between its media and telecoms operations.
Microsoft is currently in negotiations for a potential buyout but the status of the talks is close to falling apart with the main issue being Microsoft wants the asking price to be lowered. Sony themselves have stated they have no interest at all in doing any negotiations regardless if the price itself were to be lowered.

Bullshit on the Mega Man thing. While the series did have spin-offs in to other types, no human being is not gonna think of a fucking action side-scroller when you say Mega Man to them. And people were pretty damn clear that they wanted Legends 3. And Universe. And then they drop not one but two iOS games. Where is the disagreement about this? Who in Capcom doesn't get what the next game should be? Was Inafune that important for what seems to be simple decisions?

Ultra Mantis 09-08-2012 08:18 AM

There's pretty much only Classic, X and Legends that are popular anyway. When people say they want a new Mega Man game I doubt many of them are talking about ZX, Battle Network or Star Force.

Ultra Mantis 09-08-2012 08:20 AM

And absolutely nobody is talking about iOS.

I was under the impression that MMBN was pretty popular.

Ultra Mantis 09-09-2012 05:10 PM

Nowhere near the level of classic or X, to be fair I don't think fans would be so rabid for a Legends sequel if Capcom hadn't announced and cancelled it in the first place. Not that it's the only factor, if they announced and canned Mega Man Soccer 2 I wouldn't expect similar reactions.

According to the New York Times, EA has made several recent attempts to buy out Valve with the most recent offer being around $1 billion.

Quote:

Electronic Arts “would very likely have valued Valve at well over $1 billion had the talks progressed that far,” according to the article. This was based on statements made by a couple of people familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Valve has reportedly rejected the offers with the reasons being they are currently happy with their status as a small privately-owned company and EA not coming anywhere close to the actual value of the company which is estimated to be around $2.5 billion.

According to Gabe Newell, the company also thinks had a deal been reached, EA would just terminate the company in a couple of years while keeping the sole rights to all the IPs owned by Valve. Newell would rather have the company shut down than be bought out if the choice was ever to be realistically made.

Quote:

According to the article, Mr. Newell is on record as saying: “It’s way more likely we would head in that direction than say, ‘Let’s find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate.”

Insomniac Games, who has made plenty of single player games in the past, announces they don't think they will ever make another single player-only game in the future with the upcoming Fuse being the start of their new philosophy.

In an interview with GameSpot, the CEO of the company, Ted Price, states the change in direction is due to social technology and the state of the industry which no longer is favorable to single player-only games.

Quote:

“I can’t imagine that any game we’d do from here on out will be single-player-only,” Price told GameSpot. “The [game industry] has changed. As gamers, we have always been social, but thanks to the way technology has evolved, it’s much easier for us to play together. And it’s much easier for developers to create experiences where you can play together. So we want to encourage that with all of our games because ultimately, in my opinion, it’s often more fun to play with a friend.”
He was careful to mention this doesn't meant Insomniac Games will only be making multiplayer-only games since Fuse does contain a single player campaign. Instead they will switch the priority towards online multiplayer when developing new projects.

The decision itself might have also been influenced recently by EA who is the publisher for Fuse. EA stated they no longer will allow games to be released by them (developed or published) if they do not contain some form of online multiplayer.

Granted, if they include more co-op campaigns and the like, I can't see it as a bad thing. But if they do end up harming single player/story mode, the end result will probably be mediocre all around.

Briefly announced in the Wii U thread but Nintendo reveals Bayonetta 2 will be an exclusive game for the Wii U.

Very few details were revealed but the game is a sequel of the original game and will contain tablet-based features. Nintendo also confirmed they have funded the entire project for developers Platinum Games and own the rights to publish the game which is why Sega won't (Platinum's actual publisher).

Atsushi Inaba who was the producer of Viewtiful Joe, Ōkami and God Hand was revealed to be lending support in developing the game.

According to some rumors, Sega cancelled the project on their side which is how Nintendo was able to take over the project while Platinum Games relationship with Sony recently soured in Japan to the point of Sony unwilling to help them out.
