That’s not because of some bias against WWE, it’s because Ziggler has been middling about in WWE for 15 years doing the same act.

Street Profits are great (well, Montez Ford is great, Dawkins is there too) but potential means nothing in WWE, as they have proved over and over and over again. You can’t invest in them because you will get burned. And you will get burned.

The bias that exists towards AEW is that as a new entity they have the capacity to deliver on promise (obviously you depart on the grounds of what it is that you want delivered) whereas WWE have spent the last 20 years promising to not deliver.

I watch both with a general malaise to be honest but I think the above is pretty evident.

AEW deliver on shit. It’s made me appreciate the WWE way more, because I can now recognize the things they actually do and why they do them. Listening to smarks should be way low on their list.

WWE DOES listen to smarks though. Constantly. It’s the sole reason Daniel Bryan ever became a thing. They caved to the smarks. But then they back off eventually because it doesn’t work for the mainstream. And then they go back. Rinse and repeat.

Well, if Kurt likes to fuck dogs presumably there's easier ways to go about it than fighting a dogs husband to get to the dog.

lmao there's a lot of that during their matches.

BTW, Steve Romero is awesome. Maybe not as a lead announcer on RAW, but he was fun on Velocity.

Evil Vito 01-14-2021 02:14 PM

I remember it was a bit of a bummer not having a B-show for SmackDown anymore. It only ended because ECW needed to be taped when Velocity was getting taped. But then eventually SmackDown and ECW did a "talent exchange" or whatever.

Daniel Bryan has way more appeal than just to smarks. Dude is an all-time great. He’s got the selling, psychology, charm and charisma down. I’d agree that the WWE probably does listen to the worst fans too much though.

Velocity was great. Used to watch it every week. There were some killer matches featuring Paul London on there. I watched him against Frankie Kazarian so many times. He also had an awesome series against Akio. Paul Burchill had a couple of fun squashes on there too.

The best C-show announcer of the era, to me, is/was Scott Stanford (he still works there, but doesn’t do commentary). My favorite will always be when David Hart Smith was working Zack Ryder on Superstars or something. DH Smith was wearing a cowboy hat for no reason. Smith shoulder tackles Ryder and then does this weird dance and Stanford, in a serious announcer voice goes “Tex is shaking his hips. Tex is shaking his hips.”

Fucking amazing.

Romero and Josh Mathews were a fun team

I'm honestly surprised we didn't see a maga inspired wrestler after the Swagger attempt, or a maga inspired authority figure.

screech 01-16-2021 10:49 PM

Feel like Vince wanted to do a MAGA/anti-mask gimmick but the shareholders advised against it lol

Damian Rey 2.0 01-16-2021 11:00 PM

Lol oh yeah. I mean, it wouldn't be overly difficult to run the gimmick without being obvious. Have a new heel rise to power, let him cut promos where he's making obvious lies and appealing to the lower card guys, and slowly have him build up a following where he's nearly untouchable until whoever you wanna make as a babyface star comes along to dethrone him.

Savio 01-17-2021 11:47 AM

Anti-vaxxer gimmick would be better. Wrestler rises in the rankings dominating his opponents each week and then dies.

XL 01-17-2021 01:54 PM

I was listening to Cornette’s “take” on Jericho having COVID and I’m sure he suggests someone (maybe even Jericho himself) having a Pro-Trump gimmick and him being the biggest heel on the show. I’m not so sure.

Bad News Gertner 01-17-2021 02:20 PM

So basically Sam Adonis's gimmick

XL 01-17-2021 04:01 PM

Having looked up who that is; I guess so yeah. But being Pro-Trump/anti-Mexicans when you’re working in Mexico probably would make you a heel. In the US you’ll closer to Bret’s Heel in the US/Face in Canada gimmick.

Evil Vito 01-21-2021 08:24 AM

Listening to Undertaker's appearance on Joe Rogan

"Too much pretty and not enough substance". I get what he's saying but it's hilarious coming from a guy with an eight minute entrance.

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-21-2021 08:40 AM

Of course, he apparently didn't criticize the booking. Just the wrestlers.

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-21-2021 08:42 AM

Could you imagine 1997/1998 Steve Austin fanboying over 2021 Steve Austin and taking a stunner?

Okay that sounds ridiculous. But imagine Greg Valentine came back for a legend's night back in 1998, and Steve Austin bumped for him.

That's pretty much main problem with WWE. Obviously, it's a symptom. But they book their guys like a bunch of simps for the company. While I understand how some wrestlers "loving wrestling" growing up is cool, but not everyone should be like that. There should be some nasty dudes who do it for a paycheck. Some guys who don't care about history and want to be the best. And none of them should be intimidated by 87-year-old Undertaker.

Evil Vito 01-21-2021 09:18 AM

That's because Vince doesn't want to run the risk of anybody ever becoming bigger than the brand ever again.

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-21-2021 09:20 AM

I get that. And it has some amount of logic to it, I guess, in a twisted way.

But there's got to be another way of doing it besides making everyone the punkest of bitches. I guess at least Roman seems cool now.

Evil Vito 01-21-2021 11:14 AM

Supreme Olajuwon 01-21-2021 05:05 PM

The chair shot was because Kanyon had finally come out to the locker room right? He wanted to go public with it and WWE said no and then booked Taker to beat the shit out of him?

XL 01-21-2021 05:16 PM

That can’t be true.

Supreme Olajuwon 01-21-2021 05:29 PM

Here’s how David Bixenspan describes it from his review of Kanyon’s book:

Quote:

After years of desperately trying to stay closeted (aside from confiding in his best friend, Jim Mitchell), Kanyon decided in late 2001 to come out within wrestling and pitched an angle where he'd essentially be himself, a non-stereotypical, openly gay wrestler. His friends liked the idea, but it got no support from the WWE creative team.

After a series of injuries sidelined him, he got back into ring shape in WWE developmental territory (OVW) and was set to return on the February 15th, 2003 episode of SmackDown. When he got to the TV taping, he learned that he would be returning in an in-ring segment as part of the feud between The Undertaker and the Big Show.

As a "gift" from Big Show, Kanyon would come out of a giant box (closet?) dressed as Boy George, sing "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" to Undertaker and get beaten up by him. Kanyon had his qualms, especially since it came off as a vote of no confidence for his idea for a gay gimmick, but felt he had to go along with the angle.

If it was bad enough that the segment was seemingly designed to embarrass him and put him in his place, but it got worse—much worse. While he was the long-time "locker room leader" of WWE and ostensibly a safe veteran wrestler, The Undertaker was clearly reckless in beating Kanyon with the chair, concussing him with the hardest shot to the head you'll ever see.

Santos Escobar cut a pretty great promo on NXT this week.

This seems big potentially

Do NHL or Nascar run on Monday nights?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">NBC Sports Network is shutting down later this year and big events (NHL and NASCAR among them) will migrate to USA Network. Story coming ASAP.</p>&mdash; Joe Flint (@JBFlint) <a href="https://twitter.com/JBFlint/status/1352700104373768194?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 22, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Super rare does NASCAR run on a weekday. Usually due to a weather delay or something.

NHL is everyday.

slik 01-22-2021 03:31 PM

Interesting.

I could see NXT getting bumped from time to time but I have to think USA Network would be hesitant to bump RAW.

Taker did an episode of Joe Rogan Experience recently that I enjoyed. Brings you back.

erickman 01-22-2021 09:04 PM

more likely drivers will appear on raw kind of like when kyle petty was in the nwo

screech 01-22-2021 09:26 PM

Didn't some NASCAR guys guest host RAW a few times?

Supreme Olajuwon 01-22-2021 09:47 PM
