Yeah, GB and Destructoid are the only blogs I follow because they're pretty damn entertaining in how they publish their news. Joystiq too at a much lesser extent.

Nope. Open to anyone on the site. They make a new quest every week, usually in tandem with a game release. They made one for Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 this week, and asked me to search the website for famous gaming mustaches. (Thanks, Nintendo)

Giant Bomb's game database is really crazy.

I will visit Destructoid on a rare occasion, but it hasn't ever roped me. Need to keep visiting it though; I'm sure it's more worth my while than Joystiq or Kotaku.

Kalyx triaD 02-02-2011 12:56 PM

Dtoid has serious load issues. Just messy. But Jim Sterling is an on-point dude. They don't do really fun articles anymore (like analyzing fanboy forum battles).

According to Treyarch community manager Josh Olin, gamers are becoming more negative, especially when it comes to innovation. I'm sure that's the reason why Treyarch isn't working on a whole bunch of original IP.

"Personally, as a community manager who lives in the media or social media world every day, I think the social culture of videogames is moving in a more negative direction as technology and social media continues to grow," Olin claimed. "Rather than growing with it, the trend seems to be devolving. More and more gamers seem to forget what this industry is all about.

"It’s a creative industry -- the most creative form of entertainment in existence," he added. "Too many developers who try new things are getting burned by 'pundits' and angry entitled fans who look to be contrarian, sometimes simply for the sake of being contrarian.*The only thing this attitude aims to achieve is stunt that creativity and innovation even further, which is something that no rational gamer looking to be entertained would want to do."

If I thought Olin's words were even slightly true, I'd agree with them. Unfortunately, I do not. I think a bigger problem is indicated by Olin himself -- writing off criticism as "contrarian" rather than trying to work out why someone might be pissed off. Sorry, but being "innovative" doesn't give you a free pass, and I think it's altogether more damaging to the industry that we have devs that think so.*

Being creative without being good. That's what stifles this business.*

Not quite sure why the community manager of a developer riding off a franchise from a better developer is whining about creativity...

#BROKEN Hasney 02-02-2011 04:26 PM

EA lost $322 million in Q3... Ouch.

Kalyx triaD 02-02-2011 04:45 PM

Stop those wacky-ass promotion campaigns and focus on satisfying your damn developers.

Fignuts 02-02-2011 05:10 PM

Yeah, pretty sure stuff like Limbo, Little Big Planet, and Shadow of the Colossus have gotten rave reviews.

BigDaddyCool 02-02-2011 05:31 PM

video games are for children.

Fignuts 02-02-2011 06:29 PM

That was lame.

You aren't even trying anymore, BDC.

BigDaddyCool 02-02-2011 06:33 PM

No, not really. That is my new gimmick, being annoying and lame.

Fignuts 02-02-2011 06:53 PM

Gotta be honest, I do not see this gimmick going places.

First trailer and screens for Dark Souls released by FromSoftware and Namco Bandai today.

The sequel to Demon Souls is expected to be much harder with bigger worlds and combat varieties to go along with new enemies and story. Also announced was new modes and features for online multiplayer.

The game is set for a late 2011 release date in both the US/Canada and Europe for the Xbox 360 and PS3. No news on a PC version was given but at the moment very unlikely.

Much harder?

Wasn't the first one really hard? Like not fun super meat boy hard, but this game is cheap as fuck hard?

It had its cheap moments, but it wasn't that bad once you started being patient and learning enemy patterns. I just beat it for the first time last month, so I can still feel some of the agony, but not all.

I was more annoyed that random people could jump in my game, break all my equipment, and kill me. But the online stuff was too interesting to shut PSN off.

I was ready and prepared for this to suck but man if that wasn't one of the best parodies I've seen in a long time.

Vox Populi 02-03-2011 12:03 AM

The Fight Night Champion demo is all kinds of fantastic. I was anticipating this game quite a lot already, now it's just off the charts.

Weird Treyarch seems to confuse being creative with doing the same thing a million times over.

Some Battlefield series news:

DICE and EA officially cancel Battlefield 1943 from appearing on the PC after delaying the game multiple times since its console release. Also canceled is the Onslaught pack for Bad Company 2 on the PC.

The reason given was DICE wants to be completely focused on Battlefield 3 which was officially revealed today. First trailer for the game won't be released until Friday.

DICE did confirm that the game's art style is similar to Bad Company 2 and Vietnam DLC pack with new animations and improved environment destruction from the new "Frostbite" engine.

Battlefield 3 is set for a TBA release date on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. If the previous games is any indication, preference will be given to the console versions of the game.

Bad news for PS3 users who want to play Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 since somehow either Sony or Capcom included DRM in the game and is currently causing problems to some PS3 users.

The game itself has no online modes except for Time Attack leaderboard and the Xbox 360 version has no DRM.

i would love a full game of duty calls.

The worst game of 2010 more than doubling one of the year's most beautiful, original, and well-crafted titles just demonstrates to me how screwed up the market truly is. We complain about sequels and rehashes, we whine about publishers not putting out original content, and then this happens, and we realize it's nobody's fault but ours.

So yeah, enjoy your next Guitar Hero or Call of Duty, folks. You've f*cking earned it.

#BROKEN Hasney 02-04-2011 02:01 AM

Enslaved really wasn't that good though. The demo defo did not help.

RoXer 02-04-2011 02:07 AM

The ending sucked. There were some graphical glitches too. Fun game though with great voice acting.

Kalyx triaD 02-04-2011 02:11 AM

The point, as far as I gather since I didn't like Enslaved either, is how it did that bad and how a bad game did that good. Don't care for neither game, and it would be better to compare like-genres, but he has a point.

Anyway, why the fuck does it take so long for PS3 to download anything? Updates take a fuckin year. That's the only I didn't make my return to Metal Gear Online yet, and the same reason my bro hasn't played Killzone 2. We rather play Street Fighter 4 or LittleBigPlanet 2 than wait.

Emperor Smeat 02-04-2011 02:31 AM

Did Sega bother to advertise the game as much as Kane & Lynch was advertised?

Sega's more riskier games haven't been advertised well this generation which makes Sega upset and they start to blame someone (ex. Wii for Madworld). Then again, Sega bought a lot of "niche" quality developers so its not a surprise why they don't have any mega sales.

For the PS3 question, that is more of Sony's fault since they didn't design PSN architecture as well as Xbox Live and while MS mostly takes care of everything on Live, Sony expects developers to handle stuff on PSN. They also charge by the bandwidth for almost anything put on PSN as well.

Kalyx triaD 02-04-2011 02:42 AM

Killzone 2's alright. Like the pace and the matches lasting a bit. Not sure why it's so uniformly dark, reminds me of Battlefield BC2 where I had to adjust visual settings in-game because the default look just seemed off. SOCOM's next, though I already played that last year. Now we wait for the update to load.

Over here, Enslaved was advertised pretty heavy on TV and K&L2 was on buses, yet K&L2 was at the top of the charts for a good few weeks.

Killzone 3 beta is on PS3. Graphics are awesome. Gameplay takes some getting used to though.

Kalyx triaD 02-04-2011 03:23 AM

May try that and the MAG demo.

#BROKEN Hasney 02-04-2011 03:26 AM

A lot of places are saying the multiplayer is amazing, but the single-player has issues.

I've just got back into Timesplitters too hard to care.

EA reveals more information for the upcoming SSX Deadly Descent game.

The Skate team is not working on the game but the game itself is meant to feel like "Burnout on snow".

Also announced is a social system for the game similar to Need For Speed's Autolog, Survival challenges that need to be completed before your character's oxygen runs out or blacks out, and lots of short-cuts to be created in race tracks/slopes.

The game is still on course for an early 2012 release and only for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Microsoft confirms the HD remake of Halo 1 will arrive November 15 this year. Also announced is Bungie and Microsoft won't be working on the remake so its possible 343 Industries will be the one in charge of the project.

Kalyx triaD 02-04-2011 08:53 PM

Know what, I can dig a snowboard game with a Burnout influence.

Good luck to 343 Industries, they're playing it safe until they make their own Halo, I guess.

But while chatting with Ono, I managed to get a few updates on some other possible Capcom projects, including Onimusha and Darkstalkers. I simply had to ask about Nintendo vs. Capcom. It turns out the fervor surrounding the idea had intensified so much that news of a Nintendo/Capcom fighter had reached none other than Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

"At the Germany Games Convention I was asked about [Nintendo vs. Capcom]," Ono told me. "I mentioned it was an interesting idea that somehow transmogrified on the Internet into me saying I was going to do it! I have no plans to do it."

Despite not actually working on it, and wanting to be clear that he wasn't, Ono did reiterate that the project certainly sounded like it'd be fun... an interesting challenge to make the worlds of Capcom and Nintendo operate together. But could we see Nintendo vs. Capcom? Is that even a realistic idea? "I certainly don't think anything is impossible, though not terribly likely is probably a way to phrase it," Ono said.

And what about that encounter with Iwata? "I had to go to Nintendo President Iwata-san and actually apologize that I let things get out of hand," Ono told us laughing, perhaps slightly embarassed by the entire situation. "But maybe this whole conversation could be the start of something like that… or maybe it ends with me in the dog house with Iwata-san. Time will tell where [this is] going to go."

From observation on Ono's posture in the last two years, I'd say Capcom vs Nintendo just got confirmed. I'm wondering that Nintendo will get top billing ("Nintendo vs Capcom") and Sakurai will produce after his long gestating Kirby game. And more:

People still do ask for it."

"I'm basically running into the same sort of hurdles I ran into with Street Fighter IV, so if I can show there's enough interest, maybe something will happen."

Still believe DS was greenlit long ago. Ono also believes it;s a good time for Onimusha to return. He wondered about changing it up and introducing some kind of multiplayer component.

G 02-04-2011 09:57 PM

of course nintendo will get top billing. that is the name that sells

Emperor Smeat 02-04-2011 10:38 PM

Well Capcom has been pushing for one of its characters to be in a Smash Bros game and they don't want to upset Nintendo again. If it wasn't for them upsetting Nintendo with Resident Evil 4 going to PS2, Megaman would have been in Brawl.

If anything, the joking could have changed the development of a new Smash Bros since it was rumored to go on the 3DS and now potentially Nintendo could have NvC go on the 3DS and the new Smash Bros on the next Nintendo console.

Kalyx triaD 02-04-2011 10:48 PM

I would be disappointed to see NvC be 3DS exclusive. Some things need to be on a big screen.

And I think Smash could be fun on 3DS.

LoDownM 02-05-2011 01:03 AM

Killzone 3 is awesome, until 75% of the other team is camping and uses the infiltrator class to show up green to you and the radar.
