Yeah that seems to be one of the main causes for the change since some talent can easily make more in a year than what they'd normally be making in WWE and WWE gets none of sweet side money. Impact had a similar issue some time ago but they went as far as taking a percentage of talent's outside booking fees.

Based on some updates, seems WWE is only demanding talent to drop everything associated with WWE for their side stuff and if they refuse, WWE's is gong to get their cut of the money via fines and punishments.

Now whether or not those who following through and change their account names will still get to keep their side stuff won't really be known until around a month from now assuming WWE doesn't back down from their stance. Its still a shitty move in the end since its taking away stuff that helped make them popular and recognizable in the first place.

This shit goes back into the 80s with Sgt Slaughter and his G.I Joe stuff which caused him to leave the company while being the #2 babyface in the company in late 84

He also took a large chunk of Paul Orndorff's Absorbine jr commercial in 1985. Reportedly the WWF got $42,500 and Orndorff got $7500.

Here's the commercial. He's in it very briefly

Imagine being upset the owner of a company is trying to put a stop to his employees giving away things about how the company is run that the public doesn't really need to know (assuming this all stems from AJs stuff)

Gerard 09-05-2020 09:09 AM

Would love to see this get taken to court and this "independent contractor" shit get thrown out once and for all. How the fuck has he gotten away with this for all this time? The wrestlers are practically under lock and key, they can't even get a haircut without permission because if it's a different style or much different length it alters their appearance and merchandise has to be redone, probably have to ask permission to take a shit as well.

Bad News Gertner 09-05-2020 11:18 AM

It would get tied up in courts and cost a fortune.

Emperor Smeat 09-05-2020 01:31 PM

Seems NXT's move to Tuesday this past week might have had a negative effect for Impact Wrestling.

Impact's show on Tuesday ended up being around 69k lower than last week's episode and around 53k lower than what they had been typically averaging these past couple months.

Last week's show did around 171k viewers while this week's show did 102k viewers.

He's been out of action for the past few months due to another knee injury.

Came back in late April from a lengthy knee injury only to get hurt again a month later.

According to Cagematch.net, he's only been around for 3 shows this year with the last being the May 22nd episode of Main Event.

Fignuts 09-06-2020 01:02 AM

I can't imagine any of his promos weren't scripted word for word. Hard to really tell who is and isn't good on the mic when they're handed the verbal equivalent of runny diarrhea to read off of.

That might hold water if everyone didn't already know just about everything about the wrestling business anyway. The company produced tough enough ffs. And going by Vince, they're not employees so he has no control over what they say or do on their own time.

Vince seems to pick and choose depending on the narrative how the "performers" are treated, how can they be "Independent" if the wwe seems to think they control almost every aspect of them, even down to their actual name? I would honestly love to see this brought to court and ruled against.

I enjoyed his title run up until that point. WWE should have pulled the trigger on Nakamura as champion then. Jinder's reign wouldn't have overstayed it 's welcome, and Shinsuke would be better off today being able to call him the former WWE Champion.

It is insanity that we live in a world where Jinder Mahal is a former WWE Champion and Shinsuke Nakamura never has been.

Emperor Smeat 09-06-2020 12:46 PM

WWE recently released a statement regarding Vince's new ban on talent's third party streaming and side money gigs.

Pretty much confirmed the whole issue revolves around money and them wanting full control over what their talent do during their free time if its associated with the company in any way (ex. using ring names for Twitch channels).

Quote:

In many ways this is similar to when UFC would no longer allow companies to sponsor fighters individually during fight week (although they were allowed to have individual sponsors on their own, something WWE talent seemingly can't have) so UFC could market exclusivity to its own sponsors.

We were told that the key thing that brought this on were talent being on Twitch using their WWE characters and Bang Energy endorsement deals.

WWE's statement regarding the letter sent out today said "Much like Disney and Warner Bros., WWE creates, promotes and invests in its intellectual property, i.e. the stage names of performers like The Fiend Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Big E and Braun Strowman. It is the control and exploitation of these characters that allows WWE to drive revenue, which in turn enables the company to compensate performers at the highest levels in the sports entertainment industry. Notwithstanding the contractual language, it is imperative for the success of our company to protect our greatest assets and establish partnerships with third parties on a companywide basis, rather than at the individual level, which as a result will provide more value for all involved.”

In regards to the earlier stuff about WWE also trying to claim ownership of their talent's real names for outside stuff, Meltzer reported that the basis for it was from what talent were initially told by WWE's director of talent relations Mark Carrano.

Was watching Austin Vs Chono from 1992 to see the infamous inverted piledriver of doom and it was even worse than the Owen one if you think about it even for a second.

Austin not only drops Chono on his head, he then leads him back to his feet by the head while Chono is doubled over with numb hands.
He has to physically finish the match and go over with an STF while he's clearly fucked from the neck injury.

Austin has some balls being mad at Owen after that.
Jesus Christ.

Seanny One Ball 09-07-2020 08:43 PM

Ohohohoh...

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x11xuj5

Skip to 35:30 to see Austin talk about injuring Chono.

It is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
How have I never seen that before?!

No accountability at all.

Seanny One Ball 09-07-2020 08:46 PM

So in his mind when he drops a guy on his head and hauls him to his feet while he's clearly crippled it's just a terrible accident, but when Owen did it to him it was unforgivably negligent.

Look at him stumbling around that question like he just broke his neck again.
What a belter, I bet that interviewer had a lovely wank over that one later on.

Emperor Smeat 09-07-2020 09:05 PM

Think Austin's beef with Owen was more due to him being upset Owen never bothered to visit him in the hospital or check up on his well being while he was out and less about the accident itself.

Seanny One Ball 09-07-2020 10:10 PM

No he had beef with all of it.
He gripes about Owen's late kick out all the fucking time.

At least he noticed you were hurt Steve, at least he didn't grab you by the head and pick you back up.

Seanny One Ball 09-07-2020 10:13 PM

Austin literally only apologised to Chono in that video too. Not in s meaningful way like after the match, but flippantly in an interview where he was ambushed by a sniper.
It's like he just cannot accept blame for it.

More like being upset that the owner of a company trying to horn in on the side hustle shit other people have been doing for years because one or two people recently said something they don't like (assuming this all stems from AJ's stuff).

Imagine working at McDonalds, and selling your own screen printed shirts on the side when you're home. Someone somewhere else in the company also makes shirts that say "fuck Ronald", and [presumably] because of that, you're pretty much being told to stop doing something you do on your own time.

Also, you unintentionally hit on a vital point by calling them "employees". If you believe the company, they're not. They're "independent contractors". They dance around the "employee" line to get out of shit like health care, but they're not exactly open for freelance shit like the title implies. Orton can't show up and challenge Aldis for the NWA title tomorrow... but he's not an employee of WWE. People leaving have no compete clauses for x number of days so that can't use any momentum or heat to help some other company get any sort of noteriety... essentially unable to independently contract in a particular window of leaving the company either by design or "future endeavors"... but they're independent contractors, not employees.

There are a lot of people who have, in the last number of years, started streams where they play video games, play D&D, eat food, assemble furniture, vacation, etc... just a variety of shit outside of their wrestling careers; at times, even outside their personas. Now they all have to suddenly give it up because one guy is either pissy or jealous he isn't getting a cut... or both? Get right the fuck out of town with that.

It's the timing of when the incident comes to light, not the actual incident. If Austin got arrested today for beating his wife, that would be it.

It's fucked up, but it's almost like society doesn't care if it's not newly discovered. If it just came out today that he beat up Debra in 2002, and nobody knew until now, he would be done. Since we have known about it since 2002, it does not matter.

GD 09-08-2020 01:50 PM

There're no excuses for what Austin did. He's shown remorse for his actions and has grown as a person. If it happened in today's climate, he'd certainly be ousted from the wrestling world.

GD 09-08-2020 01:52 PM

I have a faint memory of a Teddy Long interview where he talked about Ric Flair and his attitude towards African Americans and the usage of the n-word.

Seanny One Ball 09-08-2020 01:56 PM

I made a joke about that once.

Hang on.

Here's some Steiner Math for you.

They should name a whole division after Teddy Long.
They could call it The Teddy Long Division and if you win the Championship Ric Flair calls you the n-word every day for the rest of your/his life.

I did my random jump to this thread and saw some Conrad Thompson podcast material being posted as part of a debate as opposed to discussions of the new flippy floppy shit. I am in Heaven.

On quick review, I agree with Seanny that Martha Hart’s opinion is shit.

Has anyone brought up the story of Austin asking Owen multiple times before the match “Are you dropping to your knees?” and Owen just kinda blowing it off with a “No” and Austin thinking he was ribbing?

Not until now but I don't really buy that as an excuse. If I was in that position I'd be damned sure to clarify which version he was doing especially since I broke a guys neck with it five years before.

Maybe Owen was friends with Chono

#1-norm-fan 09-08-2020 02:21 PM

THAT’S the conspiracy I’ve been looking to delve into.

Seanny One Ball 09-08-2020 02:24 PM

I don't see anybody denying it.

It must be true.

Owen DID work in NJPW early in their careers.

Best friends with Chono you say?

Interesting.

They talk about Backlund not having the promo ability at that time, and I always feel like I have to bring up his interactions with Flair and Race, both of whom made him really look like a blubbering idiot. He had a hard time at that point putting a sentence together, and here he is with two different guys who could sell the match in about a minute and a half.

Oddly enough, it reminded me of the contract signing between Shida and Thunder Rosa, how one of them blew the other out of the water with their personality. The other one wore a kimono, and that's what gets the EVP in charge of that division a boner.

Bad News Gertner 09-09-2020 10:29 PM

Lol that's my question by the way.

The fact that Shida is one of their best options for champion speaks volumes about the lack of depth in that division.

He and Jack came over to the WWF in the summer of 84 and feuded with Murdoch and Adonis for a bit before Jack had enough of the cold weather and retired. Gerald retired from the ring and had been with the company ever since.

Wonder if that means WWE is moving away from scouting the college wrestling scene since that was Briscoe's specialty.

Supposedly there is a very good wrestler in college that WWE was eyeing a lot and was getting some Cena-like comparisons for potential stardom in the company.

Emperor Smeat 09-10-2020 08:42 PM

WWE somehow decided NXT UK didn't have enough titles since a new one is arriving for the brand's return to weekly tv soon.

Once they add the new Heritage Cup title, that would give them 19 titles spread across 5 brands (RAW, SD, 205 Live, NXT, & NXT UK).

Seanny One Ball 09-11-2020 02:09 PM

Why would they even scout amateur wrestlers? Just scout any big bastard that can move.
