Looking forward to this. I remember buying the book when it came out. Gonna be interesting to me if the gang Bruce takes under his wing will still look like wannabe Cyclopses.

look at that mongoloid chin!

Nowhere Man 05-31-2012 08:22 AM

I'll be honest, I always kinda hated the Dark Knight Returns. I know it's got this pedigree of being a legendary game-changing comic (never mind that Denny O'Neill had been writing a 'dark and gritty' Batman for like a decade before Frank Miller came along), but Miller's artwork was always distractingly ugly to me. And the writing.....I mean, everyone laughs at Frank Miller nowadays after All-Star Batman and Robin and DKSR and Holy Terror, but I really don't see the difference between TDKR and those later comics. It's a good time capsule for the gaudy excess of the 80s, but not something I really feel like revisiting.

I did like the DKR parody that they did in Batman the Animated Series, though:

Green Lantern Comes Out Of The Closet
In a DC Comics universe-wide reboot, Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern) is now an openly gay superhero. His new storyline will be revealed in Earth 2 issue No. 2, which comes out Wednesday.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of Earth 2 James Robinson explains the change:
"The original version of Alan Scott was an older man, and he had a superpowered son, Obsidian, who was gay. The fact that Scott was young now [thanks to a universe-wide reboot] meant Obsidian no longer existed. I thought it was a shame that DC was losing such a positive gay character. I said, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?' To Dan DiDio’s credit, when I suggested it to him, there wasn’t a moment’s hesitation."

The superhero was originally introduced in 1940 and fathered two children. He was the character DC co-publisher Dan DiDio teases audiences about earlier this month. In the reboot, Alan Scott has a boyfriend, Sam.

I hereby request that the thread be renamed DC Green Lantern Likes Penis Comics Thread.

Kalyx triaD 06-01-2012 01:59 PM

lol

Lock Jaw 06-01-2012 02:20 PM

I am not a fan of this.

Not because he likes penis... not that there's anything wrong with that.... but because of the unnecessary changes done solely for "publicity".

I just wish the old universe would come back.

Nark Order 06-01-2012 06:54 PM

All of this feels so forced. Not a fan at all.

Rammsteinmad 06-01-2012 06:55 PM

So are DC trying to play this off and new, unique and daring, 20 years after Marvel did it?

Nark Order 06-01-2012 06:59 PM

I wonder how Shane Helms feels about his Green Lantern tattoo now?

The dialog feels very forced and not every gay man speaks like that.

Alan Stewart's logo isn't the same as the Green Lantern Corps logo, which is what Helms has got. He's probably more of a Hal Jordan fan.

Nowhere Man 06-02-2012 06:31 AM

Well, I did call it when I said it'd be one of the Green Lanterns. I was honestly expecting it to be Kyle, though.

But yeah, making it Alan Scott just really enforces the "we're doing this as a cheap publicity stunt" feel the whole thing has. They make a big announcement about how a 'major' character is coming out, and then it's a parallel universe version of one of the Golden Age heroes, who hadn't really been a major player in years anyway. So they've got the name-value of GL, but didn't actually pick one of the main Earth-1 Lanterns to avoid fan backlash.

RP 06-02-2012 06:33 AM

How many gay people read comics? It just seems like an awfully big change to be targeting towards such a small audience.

Rammsteinmad 06-02-2012 10:43 AM

I said this on the previous page (or maybe in the Marvel thread) that it's ridiculous. Gay people aren't suddenly going to read a comic because it has a gay character, unless they did already to begin with.

Krimzon7 06-02-2012 11:11 AM

MOTHERFUCK! Young Justice was good, we got FOUR FUCKING GENERATIONS OF FLASHES, and now we've got a new mini arc underneath the main Invasion arc.

Fuck you if you motherfuckers aren't watching this with me

Please watch it with me :'(

Krimzon7 06-02-2012 11:15 AM

c'mon guys, this is amazing. The first season was soooo good, now this season has repercussions from that season coming to fruition, with other mysteries unfolding just as we get the answers that we were pining for. Jesus, I find myself looking forward to the next week more and more.

Krimzon7 06-02-2012 11:16 AM

In response to the GGL....I mean there's umpteen thousand GL's. One has to be a criminal, one was bound to be gay, I thought they achieved both in Sinestro.

Shadow 06-02-2012 12:02 PM

Hey I'm watching Young Justice.

I just don't advertise that I'm a nerd.

Krimzon7 06-02-2012 12:04 PM

the only nerds i see are the ones NOT watching Young Justice. The shit is the goods

Besodes...I've got tattoos and a big dick. You can't be a nerd then!

Nark Order 06-02-2012 12:55 PM

Finally getting around to reading Starman. Let's do this.

I can't see it being too different from whatever the percentage of gay people in society in general is. And I can't see someone buying Earth 2 just because Green Lantern is "one of them".

Shadow 06-02-2012 05:59 PM

So....we've got Implus in Young Justice now. I'm....very happy.

Also happy with who's voicing him and we got to see the Flash Family in action.

Krimzon7 06-02-2012 08:56 PM

I love Impulse already, Beast Boy is making me angry with that whole 'noted' thing. what the fuck is that about? I wonder why he won't just level with the team and why is he playing with the whole cherade... It's good to see KF rocking the colors again. Word on the street is that ARTEMIS is gonna be back at it next week

I also love the whole Roy/Real Roy/Chesire angle. I love the time they get each episode

Just a fucking well put together episode

Lock Jaw 06-02-2012 09:17 PM

I promise to start watching Young Justice soon. Just finished up watching the current TV show I was catching up on. Needed another.

Also, :y: for Starman

Wonder if some kid bought an Animal Man comic because of this. They are in for a surprise, if they did.

Nowhere Man 06-06-2012 08:13 PM

Wrote a blog article about the whole 'Alan Scott is gay now' thing. Dig it.

Lock Jaw 06-06-2012 08:47 PM

Good post. :y:

Agree with pretty much everything.

Also, while Alan Scott may be the least important and least popular Green Lantern... He was my favorite. So this whole fiasco makes me sad. Not sadder than the reboot in general, though. Compared to the reboot, this is small potatoes.

Kalyx triaD 06-06-2012 08:57 PM

DCnU pretty much turned me off to DC comics completely.

Wonder if the Legion of Bullies will have costumes this time.

Lock Jaw 06-06-2012 09:15 PM

Though I gotta say... reading Earth 2... that is the way to go if you are going to do a reboot.

Throw all past continuity out the door, even if it gets rid of popular legacy characters, and start from scratch with origin stories.

I have actually enjoyed the first two issues, aside from the Alan Scott gay thing which comes across as mad "awkward" and "forced".

The layers and the action caught all of us by surprise. It's a good show

Lock Jaw 06-07-2012 04:25 PM

Just watched the first ep of the second season. Not a fan of this time jump at all. Hopefully it gets better.

Shadow 06-07-2012 04:29 PM

It does.

Oh boy does it get better.
