Those comments weren't directed at you, you don't strike me as an actual racist, just someone who happens to live in Texas.

Supreme Olajuwon 11-18-2010 05:12 PM

Playing the race card simply means you brought up race as an issue in a discussion that wasn't about race. You clearly did that. Dunno why you're getting bent out of shape about it.

K.

IC Champion 11-18-2010 05:18 PM

My point was there is a different scrutiny for black players at that position, there always has been, it's sad, but it's true. From Warren Moon to McNabb. That was my point, not a lame attempt to play the race card.

IC Champion 11-18-2010 05:19 PM

I'm not saying it's just because he is black, as there are black athletes who have done worse, and aren't nearly as talked about.

Gonzo 11-18-2010 05:32 PM

I don't really know that anyone brings up the fact that a quarterback is black anymore when making qualitative judgments regarding their play. The last thing I can remember was when Rush Limbaugh made comments about Donovan McNabb, but Limbaugh was just an ass and shouldn't be taken seriously.

IC Champion 11-18-2010 05:39 PM

I think it has more to do with that he was a quarterback and such a big star at the time more than anything. I know you would like to believe race doesn't play a factor, but this is a nation where 35% of the population thought Obama was a Kenyan and Muslim.

James Steele 11-18-2010 05:42 PM

Also the nation where 79% of African-Americans voted for Barack Obama just because he was African-American.

James Steele 11-18-2010 05:42 PM

OH LOOK, I PULLED A STAT OUT OF MY ASS TOO!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, I was over-zealous, it's more like 20% think he's a muslim.

I think it had everything to do with the fact he was a quarterback, a good one at that, or back then, at least a dynamic, exciting player that was always talked about.

Yeah, as far as that goes, it goes both ways. Unfortunately there are a number of things that will be effected along racial lines for generations to come because of the culture fostered through this nation's development.

Regardless, race doesn't really have anything to do with this situation. Black quarterbacks may have been heavily scrutinized 20 or 30 years ago, but not today.

Bro, I dunno what you're not getting about this. If you introduce race into a discussion that is not about race, that is playing the race card. Nobody was talking about Mike Vick's race before you brought it up. You introduced race into the discussion. You played the race card. It's not a condemnation of your opinion.

Ok, I understand what you are saying, I rushed to a judgment.

It still happens, just not in the way it did 20 or 30 years ago, and certainly not as openly.

IC Champion 11-18-2010 05:58 PM

It's the same as with black head coaches, particulary at the college level, and if not for the Rooney Rule, possibly still in the pros. Is it as bad as 20, or 30 years ago? No.But it's still harder for a black coach to get hired over a white one evidently.

James Steele 11-18-2010 06:01 PM

How about instead of using race for a job qualification, we just determine to hire them if they are good at there job.

If only it were so simple.

It is that simple, but people want to create something out of nothing and destroy peoples' careers by labeling them racists.

That is exactly why.

.

What is right about hiring any man over another man just because of race?

James Steele 11-18-2010 06:19 PM

How will we ever truly make progress if we keep trying to "make things right" from the past? We can't continue to make everything about black and white and expect to move past that.

I can't help it if certain parts of America still think it's only halftime of the Civil War.

It was def cause they didnt draft Ricky Williams..

Maybe, but it's not like he was ever warmly recieived after that either.

James Steele 11-18-2010 07:00 PM

Philly fans are just fucking asshole scum anyway. They fucking boo'd an injured player who got carried off on a stretcher.

Gonzo 11-18-2010 07:51 PM

I hate affirmative action because I think it perpetuates racial issues. I feel that the best man or woman should be hired for the job, end of story. The NFL should investigate if they believe a team would deliberately interview only white candidates versus a minority, but to mandate that minorities must be interviewed keeps the issue alive, in my opinion.

Now, don't get me twisted, because I have nothing against a minority head coach. How do you think it feels to a minority if they are the one brought in to comply with an affirmative action rule? Especially in a situation where they know that the team may already have someone in mind? They know that they're just going through the motions. And that's bullshit. To me, I think that's a slap in the face, and worse than not being interviewed at all.

Definitely. Fucking hate the Rooney Rule. Yet if a black guy is the first person you interview, you don't need to interview anybody of any other race.

I don't care if my head coach is white, black, yellow, red, brown, or green. Just get me someone who wins.

Even though it was a Ravens game and Im biased, for the most part last weeks game was at least entertaining.

This game is basically watching the Bears suck and the Dolphins suck even more.

Who wants it less?!!

FearedSanctity 11-19-2010 10:54 AM

I can dig the Broncos, Ravens, Rams and Saints.

But the rest of that shit is embarrassingly disgusting.

Droford 11-19-2010 10:54 AM

Oh good, they're fake.

I was worried for a minute, though I didnt mind the Ravens one.

And the Steelers helmet looking like gold steel was kind of..interesting

FearedSanctity 11-19-2010 10:57 AM

Yeah, only thing real about this is that Nike will in fact be the maker of NFL uniforms in 2012.
