Nah, Geno would be a perfect addition. Obscure enough for the current crop of kids, but a nice "oh shit, they put him in?" for the older gen. Plus he comes from Super Mario RPG, which means he'll definitely have recognizable attacks, but because he was in a turn-based RPG they'll have the freedom to tweak his moves without losing the general "feel" of the character from game to game.

Geno and Isaac is my guess. Capcom seems intent on trolling the fans hard with this Mega Man business. I bet if they do put him in it will be the Captain N version. Then again, Sakurai has been known to tell some tall tales (no clones?), so maybe none of them are in.

Drakul 05-26-2012 05:04 PM

I saw the character thing this morning but I didn't know if it was worth sharing. I think it'll be Geno and Isaac.

I'm liking that the price of the Wii U is said to be under £300. What do the specs mean in plain English? Am I going to be seeing graphics from a Pixar film or similar to FF7: Advent Children? Will it be possible to have Hyrules map size put Red Dead Redemptions map to shame?

Drakul 05-26-2012 05:16 PM

Thinking they might put in Waluigi to partner with Wario in SSB.

I read somewhere today that Sakurai said this Smash Bros would go in a different direction or something. People are wondering what that might mean.
3D fighting area? Focus on tag matches?

It'll never happen but how cool would it be if they had Smash Bros be a launch title and, through out the life span of the Wii U, new characters would be added by you purchasing and meeting certain requirements in a game?
You buy The next Zelda game for Wii U, 2 years after Smash Bros has launched. You defeat the new arch enemy and get a message after the credits "Congratulations! *arch enemy name* has been added to Smash Bros!"

It's doable. Just have compatible games house the character data on the disc and, when the requirements are met, the game scans for a Smash save and unlocks the character by downloading it to the Wii U, like 360 games do with avatar awards.
It would keep the game fresh. Plus I'm sure a few people may be persuaded to pick up a new game if they knew it would unlock a character and/or stage for Smash Bros.

Kane Knight 05-26-2012 05:20 PM

Assuming those specs are real, something able to use the Unreal 4 Engine or at least be able to have a modified one like how the Xbox 360 and PS3 were able to have modified Unreal 3 engines.

In terms of RAM alone, its about 4x more than the Xbox 360 and the OS alone might have more than the Xbox 360's dedicated combined. PS3 has less dedicated than the Xbox 360 due to the way it splits its RAM. Graphics-wise, no upscaling needed to reach 720 or even 1080 since it supports 1080 by default (ex. Halo Reach was around the 600s range before it got upscaled to 720).

If that Valve rumor is true, then Steam integration similar to the PS3 and would confirm earlier rumors of Nintendo getting Valve (or EA) helping them out with the Nintendo Network.

XBLA always downloads the most up to date version. Don't know what's up with those app thingies.

Funky Fly 05-27-2012 02:57 PM

The formatting on the youtube and crackle apps could use a tiny bit of work. Daily motion kinda sucks outright. Netflix is decent, but a rogue gust of wind will kill my connection to it. And yeah, every app pretty much needs a giant update as soon as I d/l it. Seems like they're worried about releasing a patch that breaks more than it fixes, so they make you d/l the original just in case.

Emperor Smeat 05-28-2012 06:31 PM

Trying something new with the format

A sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was in development by 38 Studios before its finical problems crippled the company and their subsidiary studio of Big Huge Games.

The sequel would have been developed by Big Huge Games studio. Very few details were revealed but Big Head Games would have been the developers, the game itself was in pre-production stage, and the basis for new features were to be based on complaints generated by reviews from the first game.

Quote:

Joystiq’s sources say that “elements tested for the sequel were higher graphics quality across the board, no loading screens between zones, expanded and improved combat animations, fewer branching quests and greater effect on the world by players.”
As of now 38 Studios still owns rights to the cancelled project and series but is expected to hand over the rights to the government of Rhode Island as part of its bankruptcy requirements. EA is rumored to be ready to purchase the series once the government of RI opens up bidding for the property.

So pissed about 38 studios going down. I thought KoA: Reckoning was a GREAT game. One of the funnest I've played in awhile.

Emperor Smeat 05-29-2012 06:40 PM

The fallout from 38 Studios collapse continues to get ugly as recently the founder of the company, Curt Schilling places the main blame of the studio's demise on the governor of Rhode Island and the loss of a private investor.

According to Schilling, the studio had initially secured a $35 million deal with a undisclosed private investor who was ready to help fund the sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning but later backed out once the governor of Rhode Island publicly stated the studio was fighting to stay afloat.

38 Studios was extremely upset at the statement being made public since it ruined all future investment in the company and caused several of their existing investors and EA to halt their support of the company.

Schilling was also upset at the current governor renegading on the contract signed by the previous governor to get 38 Studios to operate in Rhode Island. The issue involved the ability to temporary defer on tax payments owed and keep earning tax credits by hiring people in the state to work at 38 Studios.

The government of Rhode Island was mainly upset at the lack of hiring as part of the deal with most of the employees and hired workers being transferees from the Massachusetts branch. As well as questions regarding how most of the original $75 million loan was spent with some of the spending ending up being unaccounted for in status reports.

EDIT: Some supposed details from a variety of places state 38 Studios was spending a huge chunk of the loaned money on a different project (Copernicus) instead of Kingdoms of Amalur without telling the state which is why the money was "missing" from status reports. EA also flat out refused to publish and fund a sequel well before the public announcement by the governor was made. EA also seems to have very little interest in buying the IP once its available for sale.

The classic Spy Hunter is getting another reboot attempt with a release planned for later this year.

The game is being developed for the 3DS and PS Vita by Warner Bros Interactive and developers TT Fusion who previously worked on the handheld Lego series of games.

Quote:

The premise of the game is more or less what it sounds like: you're a spy and a hunter. As the Agent, your mission is to stop bad guys and protect civilians. Your method of doing so is a super vehicle that you race around in, destroying enemies' vehicles.

Your car, this time, is the G-6155 Interceptor, which is designed to "seamlessly transform from supercar to off-road assault vehicle to speed boat, allowing players to go where they like within the game's branching mission tracks." Players earn the ability to upgrade the Interceptor's various weapons and gadgets over the course of play.
No other details were announced but its expected to occur at this year's E3.

Former executive and strategy planner for the Call of Duty, Robert Bowling, announces his recently formed studio's first game will be called "Human Element" with a planned 2015 release for next gen consoles and tablet devices.

Robotoki studio's project is a zombie shooter game that appears to be influenced by both Treyarch's Call of Duty zombie mode and Valve's Left 4 Dead series.

Quote:

Aside from fighting against the “zombie” part of the zombie apocalypse, Human Element establishes its gameplay with a character creation system that commits you to a specific survival goal: “Survive Alone,” “Survive with a Partner,” or “Survive with a Young Child.” Your character class will also fall into “Action,” “Intelligence,” and “Stealth” categories, which Bowling says will predetermine how you can approach certain survival challenges.

I would post this in the WWE '13 thread but I'm avoiding the spoilers for it, so I'll ask it here.

With WWE '12, when creating an entrance on Advanced Creation, how do you save your chosen entrance segment with all your chosen camera angles and so on?

I've never had this problem before, but it's just when it comes to creating the last part of an entrance I'm working on, my character is in the ring, does his pose and I choose the camera angles I want and make the name plate appear, but when I'm done and I select to save what I've got, it just resets itself and the entrance segment that I've chosen just goes back to the default camera angles and lighting.

I've tried everything but nothing seems to save what I've done, which is highly frustrating.

I've always hated the Create An Entrance when it comes to choosing the camera angles. You select a camera angle you're happy with and then about two seconds into your chosen camera angle, it automatically changes to another one (Which is usally a crap one) so it renders your chosen angle pointless. Also the guessing of when a camera angle is going to change so you can try to change it before then is annoying too. A bar at the top of the screen is really not the way to do the camera angles.

Hopefully, in WWE '13, the camera angles have names and remain at that angle until you select another one yourself. None of this automatically changing crap. Also, get some new angles in the game. The majority of the camera angles are just terrible.

I don't want to bump the RDR thread for just one small question, so I'll ask here.

Has R* done something to remove multiplayer characters? I dug the game out for the first time since before DNF released and went straight to private multiplayer just to get use to the controls again.

My character had always been Marshal Johnson (along with riding a white horse and having "Sheriff" as my title). When I loaded up MP this time I wasn't Johnson but some generic sheriff.
I looked through the characters and couldn't find Johnson anyway. Any idea what's happened?

The world of video gaming has a problem with sexual harassment. The number of women gamers is growing fast - in the US they now make up 42% of the total - but it remains a macho environment, where women are often exposed to abusive language.

(The language in this report reflects that reality.)

"Get back in the kitchen and take your goddamn hands off a video game controller."

The male voices are aggressive, even angry. Their put-downs are laced with strong swearing and sexual insults.

"Stupid bitch," says one. "Fat whore," adds another.

"I hope your boyfriend beats you. Nah, you can't get a boyfriend."

The tirade of abuse ends and Jenny Haniver laughs.

"Get back in the kitchen?" she says. "I'm not in the kitchen because I'm here kicking your ass on video games, that's what I'm good at."

We're sitting in her living room in Wisconsin, listening to audio recordings she makes when she goes online to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It's a combat-based video game, where players can talk to each other via headsets.

The recordings end up on Haniver's website, Not in the Kitchen Any More. She plays in the evening after college and says most nights she'll have to deal with harassment of some kind. Some of it just puerile, but some is graphic and threatening.

"This enemy player backed out of the middle of the match and sent me a voice message," Haniver says, remembering her worst experience. He said he hoped she would be raped and she and her family killed.

Amazingly, this is not uncommon.

Another website, Fat, Ugly or Slutty, posts examples of harassment from all games - mostly pictures of in-game messages that women receive from other gamers.

"[There's] a plethora of stupidity when it comes to what women receive in online games," says Grace, one of the site's co-founders.

"There are some people who can't even look at Fat, Ugly or Slutty because it reminds them too much of their lives, it upsets them too much," she says. "A lot of people have just walked away from online play entirely."

Several high profile incidents this year have intensified the focus on how women are treated.

In February, video game writer Jennifer Hepler was quoted in a post on the online forum Reddit, suggesting that games would be better if gamers had the option to skip the combat sections. This attracted vicious attacks in online forums and on Twitter, many of them focused on her gender.

Around the same time, a gaming competition called Cross Assault gained widespread notoriety after a male player called Aris Bakhtanians made offensive comments about fellow player Miranda Pakozdi, including guessing her bra size, talking about her body parts, and sniffing her.

All this happened face-to-face at the competition, but was broadcast on an internet video stream. The stream included a discussion in which Bakhtanians claimed that "sexual harassment is part of the culture" of their gaming community, known as the fighting game community.

Bakhtanians also defended the casual use of the word "rape" and phrases like "rape that bitch" as expressions for defeating another character.

"There's nothing unacceptable about that," he claimed. "We're in America, man. This isn't North Korea, we can say what we want."

Pakozdi eventually quit the competition, and a video of excerpts from the internet stream went viral, quickly gaining 200,000 hits on YouTube. Bakhtanians released a statement saying he'd made a mistake and apologising to Pakozdi.

The Cross Assault incident sparked an intense debate.

"Just watching it happen made me a little angry, it was hard for me to watch," says Emily Chow, a member of the fighting game community in Toronto, Canada.

After Cross Assault she blogged about her own experiences of harassment.

"I feel like I should start taking a stronger stand against people who do act this way," she says.

Vince Hui, another Toronto player, says harassment is "a little bit of an epidemic" within the video game community. "In a lot of ways we need to learn to grow up a little bit," he says.

But not everyone felt that Cross Assault was cause for change. Jonathan Quamina, an avid gamer, expressed his support for Bakhtanians, telling him not to apologise.

"As a female you can't get upset if something is said that is obscene if you're hanging out in a room full of guys," he says.

"It's like going to a strip club as a female and getting upset that the chicks are all naked. For me it goes back to freedom of speech. We're a harmless bunch of people. This is just guys being stupid guys."

There's also been pressure this year for gaming companies to do more to combat harassment.

Recently, an online video series called Extra Credits launched a campaign targeting Microsoft's Xbox Live online gaming platform, describing it as "the service most often referenced when harassment in our community comes up".

On the Fat, Ugly or Slutty website, the majority of submissions also come from Xbox Live. Grace from the site says that although gamers can report harassment, there's a widespread perception this achieves nothing.

"I feel a little sad," she says. "For some of the ones that I feel are really blatantly harassing it seems to me that maybe there should be something harsher for it, but maybe not everybody agrees and maybe not even Microsoft agrees."

Looking through the Xbox-related posts on Fat, Ugly or Slutty, it's not hard to find examples that confirm Grace's concerns.

"You are a dumb slut, you stupid whore, I would rape you..." was one example reported to Microsoft - and was sent from an account that is still active.

I found several other similar messages, confirmed that they had been reported, and sent them to Microsoft, requesting an interview to ask why these accounts were still active and what action had been taken. Microsoft turned the request down.

But Extra Credits appears to have had some success. In mid-May, the campaigners were invited to a meeting with Microsoft.

In a statement provided after the meeting, Microsoft said that "bullying and harassment are not welcome on Xbox LIVE" but admitted that "more can be done to create a safe and supportive play environment".

Microsoft says it is working on "near and long-term improvements to Xbox Live" and "our commitment to solving this problem is strong".

James Portnow, from Extra Credits, says: "It looks like they're really making some attempts to move forward with better enforcement. Of course in this industry I don't believe anything until it's out in front of the consumer."

For gamers like Jenny Haniver, any improvements will be welcome.

"I have met so many cool people through Xbox Live, the vast majority of the community is kind and welcoming. It's the absolute minority of people who are jerks, they're just a really loud minority."

This is pretty standard. It's impossible to bring this up in the gaming community and get a mature discussion.

Fignuts 06-04-2012 03:41 AM

The fighting game community's excuse of it being "part of the culture" is flat out embarrassing.

Kane Knight 06-04-2012 09:27 AM

I can't decide if it's better or worse than the default response for the overall gaming community.

Epic have taken a lot of the staff from Big Huge Games and formed Epic Baltimore.

So at least those staff can pay off their second mortgages if that actually carried over.

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. It's mostly 13 yo boys and Fred Durst types (25+yo 13yo boy-like man-children) who don't know how to talk to women that pull this shit. Everyone I know irl who does that shit is pretty bad with the ladies in general. The question is which group of fucks is the sadder of the 2?

Still don't get why so many groups promote their FPS with third person videos. Though I guess showing off a floating gun for 2 minutes would get boring.

They just want people to know that the "graphics" are in-game and not cut-scenes or created from whole cloth with no relation to the actual game.

Not really my point, but yes.

Purgatory 06-05-2012 04:10 AM

The same thing was done with Brink, though. An insane looking, hype inducing trailer. When the game actually released, it was nothing like they promised.

In all honesty, I think much more was expected than what the creators could actually do with it. Thus, the 'Hype Machine' killed it.

Shootmania looks pretty straight forward. A game of 'Tag' with guns.

#BROKEN Hasney 06-05-2012 05:37 AM

The bug-filled launch didn't exactly help matters.

But this is supposed to be an "E-SPORT". Sit back and watch people play Shootmania....

No thanks.

SlickyTrickyDamon 06-05-2012 07:13 AM

There's only one valid reason to watch somebody play a video game. To see the game in action to decide if you want to buy it.

Watching a tournament and claiming it is a sport is insane.

Brink was actually really good, it was just broken at launch which ultimately killed it...
Shame really. Still play it from time to time.

They do the WWE games, right? I mean, on top of the UFC ones.

Emperor Smeat 06-05-2012 05:50 PM

I think just the arcady side games or at least only WWE All-Stars. I also looked up and they might have been the same studio that worked on the TNA wrestling games and some Midway Games before Midway shut down.

A different THQ studio works with Yukes on the main WWE series I believe.

Kalyx triaD 06-05-2012 06:59 PM

THQ won't be doing any UFC game now. WWE might be their primary money maker, I maybe wrong.
