Major DC Comics news today:

https://www.gamesradar.com/what-is-dc-future-state/

DC is NOT rebooting again...but they are doing a line-wide RELAUNCH of some sort.

DC has announced January-February will see NO regular issues released of any series. Instead January and February will see the release of Generations: Shattered, FUTURE STATE and Generations: Forged.

DEATH METAL concludes the first week of January and the conclusion immediately launches into Dan Jurgen's book, Generations: Shattered which will see the original 1939 Batman team up with Sinestro, Kamandi, Starfire, Booster Gold, Steel and Dr Light to battle a threat to all of DC's history and multiverses. Generations: Shattered will be released the same day as DEATH METAL #7 and is intended to be read immediately afterwards.

Whatever happens there ties into FUTURE STATE, which will be a two month event replacing all other titles, and will then conclude with Generations: Forged at the end of February.

As noted in this thread before, originally DC was going to do 5G (Fifth Generation) and age out Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Supes, etc and replace them with new versions. Then Dan Didio got fired. Then Covid-19 happened. Then WB replaced a lot of DC's staff and leadership.

As also noted in this thread before, all the current DC Titles are either:

A) Ending in December
B) Current Creative teams are ending in December on major books (Bendis on Supes being the biggest example)
C) All current comic solicitations for December are either finales of current arcs or one-shot issues.
D) ENDLESS WINTER is taking place in multiple books, in December ONLY, in place of new stories starting in those comics instead.

What does it all mean - we don't know yet. But it would seem like DC is gearing up March to be a major jumping on point, a big refresh, new books, new creative teams for many major titles, a company RELAUNCH rather than REBOOT.

Some speculation is that DC will do a time-jump of sorts, not unlike the original 5G plans, but with some twist involved so it won't be so extreme of a change.

DC has revealed this short story from the big Detective Comics #1027 issue is a prequel to Generations: Shattered as well (despite the end saying Continued in Generations: Future State, that was a publishing error)

DC has revealed FUTURE STATE

All the 5G titles will be released instead as FUTURE STATE which will show the possible future of DC with new characters taking over the mantle of the most famous heroes (This would have been a permanent change pre-Didio getting fired)

https://mlpnk72yciwc.i.optimole.com/...g3VcAETLIG.jpg

Batman

The son of Lucius Fox takes over the mantle of Batman
Bruce Wayne takes the mantle of Dark Detective

In this future, Gotham City is controlled by the Magistrate. This villainous regime has taken control of the city, now under constant surveillance. All masked vigilantes have been outlawed and Batman has been killed. But an all-new Batman will rise!

Superman

Due to his involvement in an international crisis happening in the near future, Clark Kent has been rejected by Earth, causing him to focus his lifesaving efforts outside his adopted home. He travels to Warworld to rise through the ranks of gladiatorial combat in order to defeat Mongul with the help of some unlikely heroes. Back in Metropolis, Clark's son Jon Kent has taken on the mantle of Superman. After seeing the horrors that befell Gotham, he bottles Metropolis in order to keep it safe, putting him at odds with Supergirl. Can Metropolis survive better than the bottled city of Kandor did?

Wonder Woman

Meanwhile in the Amazon rainforest, Yara Flor is chosen to be the new Wonder Woman. Years later, the new Superman and Wonder Woman join forces to save their cities in a new superhero team-up the likes of which the world has never seen.

Justice League + More

A thread of great change runs through the Justice League heroes: a new League is built upon secret identities (even from each other), but an old and evolved enemy will use these secrets to try and overthrow the world. For the supernatural heroes of Justice League Dark, the very fabric of reality has shifted, and heroes are being hunted.

For Flash, Shazam, and the Teen Titans, it all begins when the four Riders of the Apocalypse unleash hell in a battle at Titans Academy, Barry Allen is cut off from the Speed Force, a Famine-controlled Wally West may be beyond saving, and Billy Batson makes a deal with the devil that will change Shazam forever. Off-world, John Stewart and the remaining Green Lanterns are stranded in the shadow of a dead power battery; Jackson Hyde and Andy Curry are separated across the galaxy; and Amanda Waller executes her ultimate plan with a new but terrifyingly familiar Suicide Squad on Earth-3.

At the end of time, Swamp Thing reveals its true intention, ruling supreme until a remnant of humanity launches a rebellion, and Black Adam looks to the past as the only way to save the future of the Multiverse.

Future State Wonder Woman Yara Flor is getting a post-Future State series of her own where she will be Wonder Girl...... and the CW is developing a Wonder Girl show starring her as well.

Seem to be ALL-IN on this new braud

Lock Jaw 11-20-2020 02:14 PM

Black Lightning ending with the upcoming S4... some dude named Painkiller is getting a spinoff show from it though...

I never finished the first season of the show... I was liking it, so no real reason why I didn't besides just too many shows

Destor 11-20-2020 07:54 PM

watched the Harley Quinn animated series. funny. voice acting is very good

Kalyx triaD 11-21-2020 12:01 PM

Black Lightning was alright, not as socially heavy handed as people thought. He got to play in the CW sandbox a lil late and making him in some different reality was dumb. While Arrow and Flash has a healthy lifespan, this is the 3rd show that just bled viewership. They should be careful how they market these shows because certain rhetoric does not pan out like they think. As Batwoman V2 will learn in a bit.

Despite being written by Bendis I read a few issues of the Naomi miniseries and was liking it..... never finished it, though.

It started really interesting and then nothing fucking happened the remaining 95% of the series because Bendis is Bendis

I must have stopped reading before that point

slik 12-05-2020 01:06 AM

I was not familiar with Bendis before he came to DC outside of knowing he wrote some stuff at Marvel people liked so I assumed he would be really good...

First couple of issues of Superman/Action Comics/Young Justice/Naomi were interesting and then somehow everything became a huge mess where either nothing happened or he just changed things for no reason and then never did anything with the changes....

Hopefully Supes can get a better creative mind for the future bc Bendis really screwed up so many things for those characters. "EVENT: LEVIATHAN" was probably the worst 'event comic series' I have ever read and it really didn't even have enough content for half of one issue, let alone six issues. The title of the series didn't even make sense. The big thing that caused the series happened 'off-panel' and the series was supposed to be a mystery but then the mystery ended up being something no one could have guessed/solved bc he threw in a random character who had not been mentioned or appeared in the series before and was like 'ta da, here is the villain, did u guess it'.

Then it just ended with zero resolution to anything, absolutely none. Nothing happened and the one thing that did happen off-panel was just left unresolved and I don't think Bendis/DC bothered to mention it since...

Lock Jaw 12-05-2020 01:10 AM

Will never forgive him for messing with Jon Kent and breaking up the Super Sons

slik 12-05-2020 01:13 AM

"EVENT: LEVIATHAN"

issue 1 - heroes show up and talk about thing that happened off-panel

issue 2 - heroes continue talking

issue 3 - heroes continue previous conversation

issue 4 - heroes continue discussion

issue 5 - heroes talk about the same fucking thing again

issue 6 - identity of villain revealed, heroes talk for a while and then leave

"he got caught in a blackhole and now he's 17"

Superman reveals his identity to the world and has zero repercussions

Krypton didn't explode itself, it was a bomb from a space villain named Rogol Zarr...why did he blow up Krypton or hate it was never revealed or followed up on, Superman just beat him up for it and that's the end of Rogol Zarr

slik 12-05-2020 01:21 AM

I remember when Naomi crossed over into Superman too and it was basically "I have used my super senses to scan your body Naomi and you have super powers"

"yes I have superpowers Superman"

"yes Naomi you do have superpowers, how did u get them"

"there was a gas leak"

"i see, did I mention u have superpowers of some sort"

"thank you superman this changed my life"

Randomly remembered this one Superman story I liked where some deadbeat dad ex-con dude switches bodies with Superman somehow because he was so envious of Supe's powers and how he didn't have to work hard and got everything.

He's all like "great, now I can actually make something of my life and have chances" but he finds being Superman so incredibly hard and taxing

Meanwhile, Superman is stuck in this dude's body and starts making his life better....

In the end, the dude willingly switches back because he found being Superman way too tough and stressful, and is surprised at what Superman has done in his life the short time he was living it and Superman is just all "we all have the chances to make our lives what we want, to make them better, and you don't need superpowers" or something like that....

Wish I could find it again to read it....

Lock Jaw 12-20-2020 11:49 AM

There's another Superman body-switching story I really like too....

Brainiac somehow transfers his mind into Superman's body, while transferring Superman's mind into the body of a young epileptic boy in a psych ward who has delusions that he believes that he is Superman.

Brainiac uses Superman's body to take over Metropolis and is working on the usual world domination....

But even trapped in the young boy's body, Superman busts out of the mental hospital and makes it to Metropolis to thwart Brainiac before his plan for world domination comes into effect

EDIT- This one is a 4-part story Adventures of Superman #536, Action Comics #723, Superman: The Man of Steel #58, Superman (v2) #114

Just spent way too long googling.... found nothing.....

This review of Bendis's final issue of Action Comics
We're all so lucky he is getting Justice League and creative run of the DC.

OK,

Death Metal: The Secret Origin is actually a great one-shot and actually has a big pretty big story. If you like Superboy Prime it's a must read.

Just watched "The Killing Joke" for the first time last weekend. Holy shit, what an amazing story. Naturally, the best voice actors were still their roles with Conroy and Hamill. I'd watch it again.

Kalyx triaD 12-23-2020 01:51 PM

All that Babs stuff in the first act felt like padding the runtime. Could have been her own animated movie.

Lock Jaw 12-23-2020 03:07 PM

Didn't they make her and Batman get it on or something

i was not very happy with what was done to him after Crisis and i hope they let him keep this happy ending. Probably the only good thing that came out of this crossoever

Yeah this really awkward and out of character scene. The DCAU played with Bruce and Babs being a thing but it was weird there too.

Damian Rey 2.0 12-24-2020 12:33 AM

I personally found the killing joke animated movie to be a fucking snooze fest. It just didn't translate for me. That and the Hush adaptation.

Honestly I don't think they'll ever top the Dark Knight Returns 2 parter or Under The Red Hood as far as animated movies go. Those were fucking stellar.

True. They spent too much time setting that up to rile the emotions, and not as much on Joker and his psycho antics.

Did like how it introducted Oracle though. My first "on screen" debut of that character. Unsure if they did it elsewhere or before (and outside of The Arkham Knight video game)

I thinking they have to be going the Batman Beyond route. DC head Hamada said the Pattinson films are their own universe.

Lock Jaw 01-04-2021 07:36 PM

You want to get nuts?! LET'S GET NUTS!

Damian Rey 2.0 01-04-2021 10:38 PM

The flash point idea is cool. Keeping 2 active Batman film timelines seems like a dumb idea.

slik 01-04-2021 10:54 PM

part of me is going to be really, really happy to see Death Metal/The Crisis stuff finally end and goodbye to the Batman Who Laughs and him being EVERYWHERE for like 3 years straight...and the other part of me dreads Bendis being the big creative mind for DC starting in March after Future State...

Sixx 01-05-2021 03:17 AM

Never read Batman Who Laughs, but he looks stupid as fuck.

Lock Jaw 01-05-2021 08:18 AM

Keaton appearing in anything more than the upcoming Flash movie has been debunked

Damian Rey 2.0 01-05-2021 03:14 PM

Thank goodness

slik 01-05-2021 04:41 PM

Here's the big spoilers for Death Metal 7 and how DC gets re-not-booted

SPOILER: show

Wonder Woman and the Batman Who Laughs fight in their new super forms, BWL punches Wondy all the way to the beginning of time. WW then uses the hand of creation to punch BWL to the end of the time, when the Sun is about to explode, and she shoves him into it, finally killing The Batman Who Laughs off.

Perpetua's race, "The Hands", observe this and agree to reboot the DCU but with one condition, everything happened and everything mattered, no more rebooting to fit the present at the expense of the past and future.

* WW joins 'The Hands' and ascends to help them stop a lurking threat that is incoming

* Everyone back on Earth remembers all of DC history and knows WW is gone but they can 'feel her' out there, somewhere

* The Justice League/Legion of Doom agree to work together going forward.

* Lex Luthor notes that hypertime is broken, so things from the past and future might pop up from time to time (basically Future State)

* Superman says all major threats in the multiverse have been accounted for except for Darkseid, no one knows where he is. The Flash thinks that is very creepy and ominous.

* Lex reveals the Earth is no longer the center of the multiverse, two other planets are, one of which they are calling "The Elseworld" but know nothing about it...yet

Read Future State: The Next Batman, Future State: Superman and Future State: Wonder Woman. Thoughts on each:

FS: Batman - I actually liked this and I didn't expect to. It's an interesting take on Bats and Gotham's future.

FS: Superman - Eh, this one is a little too grimdark for Supes. The Bat book was more about hope and the Supes book was more depressing and darker. Jonathan Kent not coming across real great.

FS: Wonder Woman - Loved it. By far my favorite of the three. I can see why Yara Flor will be sticking around post-Future State. A whole lot of fun and crazy stuff to explore with Brazilian mythology and she's a hot-headed loose cannon.

Lock Jaw 01-08-2021 09:00 PM

The CW passes on the "Green Arrow and The Canaries" spin-off.

The pilot episode they worked in was pretty awkward and weird anyways... so kinda glad to just let the Arrow franchise "end".

slik 01-13-2021 03:45 AM

Read the new Future State titles for this week, of them all I would recommend:

Superman/Wonder Woman - Yara Flor continues to be a very interesting new character and the Brazilian mythology continues to be fascinatingly bonkers

Dark Detective - The Bruce Wayne story had gorgeous art but the real gem was the back-up story of Grifter in Gotham. Grifter, like Yara Flor, could prove to be a big character in 2021.

Please make a follow up

New season of Batwoman has started.... so I finally went and watched the last couple episodes of the first season that I never finished. Not a great show, and I wonder what the point of it even is without the "family drama" of Kate Kane and her dad/sister. Should have just said "F it" and recast instead of making a new character.

Gonna watch the season premiere now though I guess.

Lock Jaw 01-20-2021 11:29 PM

Watched it.... "lol" at just verbally saying where they would have gone with the show if Ruby Rose didn't leave..... whole thing just felt awkward....

Nark Order 01-25-2021 07:11 PM

I got burned so hard with the Ric Grayson horseshit, I'm afraid to go back. But I've decided to dive back into Nightwing. A couple of the storylines before Ric were pretty fantastic (The Judge) so hopefully it rebounds nicely. Wish me luck.

slik 01-25-2021 07:16 PM

Yeah, I'm not a fan of those storylines at all in fiction

They always end with the person getting their memory back and 99.99% of the time anything that happened during the period they were amnesiac doesn't matter and is a big waste of time.

It made it way worse that Nightwing Rebirth was a pretty solid book before it happened. It suffered from some familiar Nightwing tropes (feeling second best, new love interest that eventually just disappears from the book) but for the most part it was making strides. Raptor is a sic villain that's unique to Nightwing, The Judge storyline was better than any NW storyline in like a decade, and the court of owls becoming Nightwing centric villains made sense to me. Then Dick is shot in the head by a Batman B-Villain in a book that isn't even his, which spawns a year of absolute dogshit

Nark Order 01-25-2021 07:30 PM

Basically I got DC Infonite again and am going to catch up on everything I've missed. I think I'm on Flash Rebirth #72. Things were getting really convoluted with the Strength/Sage/Still/Speed forces when I left off but the book for the most part is pretty fantastic.

Lock Jaw 01-25-2021 11:42 PM

Haven't read anything in quite some time.... did read a bit of the Ric Grayson stuff..... dude has had a rough few years of it....

Gets "killed" and has to pretend to be dead while being a superspy (which was actually pretty great), then gets to come back to life for awhile... before being shot in the head and losing all his memories

The CW renews Batwoman, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow for another season.

Impressed at Legends of Tomorrow! Every season I am convinced is the last, but S6 hasn't even started and now they've got a 7th one already confirmed!

Seem to be ALL-IN on this new braud

Only HALF-IN as The CW has passed on developing the series

Lock Jaw 02-12-2021 06:35 PM

Would rather have that Wonder Girl series than a Naomi series, and I say that with not knowing anything about that Wonder Girl or reading her Future State stuff

slik 02-12-2021 07:07 PM

I have read Yara Flor's Future State stuff and I dig her character a lot so far. Brazilian mythology seems fun and different than the Norse/Greek stuff we usually get from Marvel/DC.

Her character is very 'hot-headed' too.

slik 02-12-2021 07:08 PM

In general I have not invested much interest in Future State though since it won't mean anything really in a month.

slik 02-12-2021 07:11 PM

Apparently Wonder Woman will be in Asgard when Future State ends and the 'Infinite Frontier' era of DC begins in a month...May solicitations were just released and have her interacting with the DC version of THOR (kind of curious what he will be like tbh)

slik 02-16-2021 03:49 PM

A bunch of really rich fans are banding together to put in like 25 million each to *try* and buy DC comics (just the comic publishing aspect, all merchandise and IP would still be separate and belong to AT&T)

Just finished Infinite Frontier...DC fixing 'stuff' this time has had an unintended consequence....

SPOILER: show

All past versions of Darkseid in DC history have become one, making him more powerful than ever...Infinite Frontier ends with Darkseid killing The Spectre, Highfather, Hera, Ganthet, The Phantom Stranger and The Wizard Shazam.

Also I'm probably going to regret this in the future via Bendis being Bendis, but I liked the Justice League tease in Infinite Frontier...

Other big happenings in Infinite Frontier...

SPOILER: show

The Joker killed Bane and then blew up Arkham Asylum

Alan Scott is gay

Hippolyta leaves Themyscira to take Wonder Woman's place in the Justice League

Nubia is the new Queen of Themyscira

Barry Allen is joining "Justice Incarnate" whose job is to map the new Omniverse

Wally West is the new Flash

The Scarecrow has teamed up with billionaire Simon Saint to make Gotham scared enough to give up all their rights

Roy Harper is alive again

Lock Jaw 03-02-2021 06:06 PM

Boo @ Alan Scott being gay

But I feel like I can't complain about it because I will be labeled homophobic..... I just like his wife/kids.....

slik 03-02-2021 10:28 PM

He still has his kids, they are who he 'came out' to

Lock Jaw 03-02-2021 10:43 PM

K, I guess that's good at least that his kids still exist.... raw deal about his wife, but I guess she isn't really important except to JSA nerds/history buffs like me.... most people prob didn't even know her name/story....

We shall see how they handle it from here.... hate it when they suddenly make someone's "gayness" be the "defining" part of their character/stories....
