Here we go.

Lock Jaw 07-10-2020 06:38 PM

HBO Max announced that it has given a "series commitment" to a show about the Gotham Police Department, from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter.

Said that it will "launch a shared universe across multiple platforms"

Nark Order 07-11-2020 10:44 AM

Dunno. Feel like of theyre going to put time and money into a DC show, they have so many options. Lots of concepts I would choose before a show about Gotham PD.

Swamp Thing
Deadman
The Terrifics
Static Shock
Lobo
Teen Titans
JSA
Hawkman/Hawkgirl
Suicide Squad
Nightwing
Super Sons

slik 07-11-2020 12:26 PM

I think I read Adam Strange is getting an HBO show too....only two issues into his miniseries from Tom King but so far, so good...really enjoy Tom King as a writer.

Lock Jaw 07-11-2020 01:13 PM

Hourman currently on the Stargirl show, but.... I always wanted to make a gritty/dark version of Hourman.... yeah, I know gritty/dark from DC movies is kind of a cliche, but....

Just think a movie/show about some dude..... who just wants to leave his mark on the world and help people.... but then ends up getting addicted to the drug he created, and the adrenaline of being a hero, and increasingly gets more desperate as his body becomes acclimated and he constantly tweaks his formula, ignoring his own wife and son in favour of his own pursuits...

Lock Jaw 07-11-2020 01:21 PM

Now that I mention Stargirl.... a Starman show would have been "dope"

slik 07-11-2020 02:16 PM

how was swamp thing (the show)

did anyone watch it

slik 07-11-2020 02:17 PM

Truly amazing. Like, really good.

I'm a bit biased because I'm a huge fan but the general consensus was also that it was magnificent.

They also won't have to worry about continuity, as all OGNs take place in their own, contained universe. DC recently signed a big deal with book publishing magnate Penguin Books, who will help market and distribute all future OGNs.

BleedingCool.com speculates if monthly comics exist in a few years, it will be less titles and likely all digital release only.

I can see why

Driven by continued growth in popularity of the graphic novel format, combined sales of graphic novels and periodical comics in the U.S. and Canada totaled roughly $1.21 billion in 2019, according to a joint estimate produced by trade news sites ICv2 and Comichron. The $1.21 billion estimate represents an 11% increase over total comics and graphic sales in 2018.

The increase in sales was led by the graphic novel book format, in particular continued growth in sales of children's graphic novels, sold via the bookstore channel, which includes chain bookstores, online retailers, mass market stores, and Scholastic Book Fairs. And while the book format led sales growth overall, sales of periodical comics in the comics shop market were also up by about 5%.

"The massive shift to graphic novels as the preferred format for comics continued in 2019, bringing sales in the book channel above the comic store channel in North America for the first time in the history of the medium," ICv2 CEO Milton Griepp said of the findings.

In 2019, North American sales of the graphic novel format were about $765 million, while sales of periodical comics were about $355 million, with sales of digital comics at about $90 million.

I like it, but am also cautious via Scott Snyder's tendency to go ultra-esoteric-cosmic and then not really follow up or follow through.

Like two issues from now that character could be totally different is what I mean. I remember it seeming like a huge deal when Sandman was in Darkest Knight: METAL but then nothing really happened with it.

I take Perpetua's words to mean

Something about that felt off for what they're trying to do. Like the next step is to hire a street team in random cities to staple flyers to phone poles like 90s rap concerts to completely miss your audience.

So, exactly the same issue I'm having with Disney+... I want to watch the new episodes of the new Ducktales (so good), but I can't, because D+ only has through season 2... season 3 is on that Disney XD, which is free but you have to be watching in conjunction with a cable subscription to unlock the service. Not fooling with any of that is exactly the reason why I have Disney+, and it makes no sense to me why you'd have two different streaming services (as a company, I mean, not as a subscriber) with different content.

I have a particular DVD set of the original trilogy with the original films on them like a "bonus feature" (and I think they all have the same demo of the first LEGO Star Wars... have to go back and look). The sound is intentionally mono crippled, and its in black bar 4:3 instead of theatrical widescreen, but unless you go completely old school and hunt down the final release of the widescreen VHS set, Indy, that's about as good as it is going to get.

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/afte...for-dc-comics/

With so many staff leaving the company, around a third it is estimated, the continual production of comic books is likely to take a hit, but the graphic novel line, which has become more valuable to DC, is so far in advance of production, that no one would notice until well into 2021.

We also hear about what is described as a Two-Year Plan for DC Comics which will see DC Comics move to mass-market production through Walmart, the licensing of titles with editors moving to brand manager roles, alongside a move from DC to digital serialisation and original graphic novels. Content will still be provided to the direct market but it will no longer be the priority that it (still) is at DC Comics.

Same. Excited to see him and Keaton in the same film. Hopefully Affleck will finally get to be in a critically acclaimed comic book film. I'm sure they're gonna kill him off tho.

Don't know when I changed my mind but I'm so for a multiverse these days.

Lock Jaw 08-22-2020 11:22 PM

Doesn't deserve it's own thread yet, but some Black Adam concept art:

Also revealed that the JSA lineup to be featured in the film is: Atom Smasher aka Al Rothstein, Hawkman aka Carter Hall, Cyclone aka Maxine Hunkel, and Doctor Fate.

PrettyCool at Cyclone getting the adaptation after not existing for almost a decade....

Hawkman/Doctor Fate had the Egypt connection to Black Adam in the comics, and we all know what happened with Atom Smasher and Black Adam so they are all solid choices to make it.

Still... I know it isn't their movie, but seems like an odd assortment of members.... hopefully they are alluded to as being from a larger team...

Fignuts 08-28-2020 07:50 PM

I’ve been reading stuff outside of the big two for a year or so now, and I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Most of them are anywhere between 20-50 issues long, and it’s so great reading a story with a beginning, middle, and end, without having to worry about a billion tie ins, or crossover events postponing the story.

Some of the stuff I’ve read that I would recommend:

Gideon Falls
Deadly Class
Black Science
Wicked and the Divine
Die
Saga

Lock Jaw 08-28-2020 08:59 PM

Saga the best ongoing comic right now

Lock Jaw 09-03-2020 12:20 AM

Unrelated note to anything.....

I wish Tim Drake had stayed with the pre-Flashpoint Red Robin costume (the Kingdom Come one).... really felt like with that costume he could become his own character and grow and become on the level of Nightwing where you think of him as that character and not "former Robin" (even though Red Robin has Robin in the name I guess).

Instead, new 52 gave him terrible costumes..... then Rebirth put him back in pretty much the Robin suit but with two Rs.

Although he was awesome in Detective Comics Rebirth so I can't complain too much.... until Bendis got him and just ignored all his excellent character arc in Detective Comics.... eventually renaming him Drake as his superhero name (probably not wise to use your last name as your hero name) and giving him a drab costume.......... but now I just read something that he flip-flopped and now he is just "Robin" again in the old Robin costume again.....

Just feel like they missed the boat with actually getting him to grow like Nightwing.....

Lock Jaw 09-03-2020 12:33 AM

Oh yeah, I forgot that Red Robin got a new costume right before Flashpoint too, and I didn't like it.... much preferred the Kingdom Come garb with the cowl.... gave him a more distinct look and made him feel more "grown up"

Fignuts 09-03-2020 12:40 AM

Saga is what opened the floodgates for me, in terms of alternatives to DC and Marvel.

Excellent News:

Brian Bendis is leaving Superman's orbit. His final issues of Action Comics and the Superman title itself will be in December. Now just keep him away from any other hero he'd derail, like Bats, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman or Green Lantern. Let Bendis play w/ Green Arrow or someone he can't screw up forever.

DC has released the info for their next big crossover event, ENDLESS WINTER.

Quote:

This December, the Justice League learns first hand the meaning of “Revenge is a dish best served cold,” in ENDLESS WINTER, a nine-issue spectacular event taking place throughout the month of December.

1000 years ago, a disparate group of heroes – Hippolyta, Black Adam, Swamp Thing and the Viking Prince – banded together to prevent the world from freezing at the hands of the Frost King, an exiled Norse god with the ability to control entire ecosystems. The heroes triumphed, but victory came at a terrible price, one that has been kept secret until now.

ENDLESS WINTER will be an event like no other in DC history as the world's greatest heroes face their most dangerous foe, The Frost King. ENDLESS WINTER spans a total of nine titles, all co-written by Ron Marz and Andy Lanning. This December everything freezes!

ENDLESS WINTER #1 (December 1)

The Flash #767 (December 8)

Superman: ENDLESS WINTER (December 8)

Aquaman #66 (December 15)

Justice League #58 (December 15)

Teen Titans: ENDLESS WINTER (December 15)

Justice League Dark #29 (December 22)

How is Mr Freeze not involved.

Lock Jaw 09-11-2020 06:42 PM

Maybe he is

slik 09-11-2020 10:55 PM

Mark Waid (Kingdom Come) is returning to DC Comics after vowing to never work there again after a fallout w/ Dan Didio who fired him from Superman just two days after he was hired to write Superman due to mysterious "Dan Didio reasons"....Superman is Waid's favorite character of all-time.

....Maybe now Mark Waid will take over for Bendis on Supes....Joshua Williamson's time on The Flash is also ending so he could be a contender for Supes or Justice League too...

Lock Jaw 09-11-2020 11:25 PM

Superman: Birthright by Waid one of my fav Superman stories....

Kalyx triaD 09-12-2020 09:46 PM

Mr Freeze better be in this event. Seems a good time for Killer Frost and Icicle to get a push to. Bit of a closet fan of Killer Frost, personally.

Fignuts 09-12-2020 11:19 PM

I mean this event seems like it’s based on mythology and magic. Freeze is 100% based on science. So just being an ice villain doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a natural fit for the story.

Fignuts 09-12-2020 11:22 PM

Could see him in maybe a side role. Like the heroes going to him at some point to make these Arctic outfits they’re showing off.

Latest DC rumors from Bleeding Cool

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/goss...c-comics-2021/

Quote:

 • DC Comics' December solicitations note that Brian Bendis' runs on Superman and Action Comics are ending in December – and this was after statements Brian Bendis made in June saying he would be staying on the Superman titles at DC "for a looooooong time."

 • Grant Morrison's run on Green Lantern will be ending soon, with no replacement project lined up.

 • Scott Snyder's Death Metal is coming to an end. He has American Vampire at DC, but nothing else announced.

 • Tom King has the Rorschach, Batman/Catwoman and Strange Adventures series for 12 issues each, but don't expect any similar big deals after that.

 • Geoff Johns brought the noise with Doomsday Clock and Three Jokers but, again, nothing lined up to follow.

These are all writers who DC Comics wooed and threw big money at to write for them. These were expensive deals, but they helped DC grab market share and get headlines. That is what is changing. The big trucks of cash are stopping. DC Comics will not be matching or exceeding former deals on upcoming projects. This is the kind of thing agents will always ask for and advise their clients not to accept lesser deals going forward, for fear of diluting their going rate.

But it's a rate that DC Comics isn't going to match going forward. What does this mean? Well, some creators want to do the work anyway and won't care if they knock their going rate. We speculated that Mark Waid may be taking Superman from Brian Bendis, but we have also been told he was offered Green Lantern when Grant Morrison's run ends.

James Tynion IV's run on Batman was at a lower rate than both Tom King and Scott Snyder were paid, he was not at that stage as big a name – though the success of Something Is Killing The Children, Wynd and The Department Of Truth at Boom and Image have changed that equation. The Department Of Truth, with 100,000 + orders for the first issue, will pay Tynion what a year of Batman comics at DC would pay.

With digital, mass market and bookstore markets as a greater focus for DC Comics going forward, outside of the comic book shop, these are considered to be less writer-sensitive and more character-sensitive markets. Basically, it matters less who writes them will be the new motto at DC.

Bendis recently tweeted this, which sort of scares me...I really hope it doesn't mean he'll be writing Justice League, Batman, Flash or some big CRISIS book. Would be particularly not pleased if he got to screw up the Bat-family next.

Something big enough to get me to clear the deck. It’s all super exciting but it’s months away and we’ll talk about it all when the world isn’t literally on fire ( I’m in portland) https://t.co/huQHEvjJnQ
— BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (@BRIANMBENDIS) September 14, 2020

R.I.P. DC Universe, hello DC Universe Infinite

https://static0.cbrimages.com/wordpr...&h=528&dpr=1.5

Launching Jan 2021, and will be available worldwide Summer 2021. Might give it a look even though I haven't read anything in a long while. Interested to see how much is on there, how things are organized and look... etc.

Lock Jaw 09-18-2020 06:22 PM

Meanwhile, Harley Quinn officially renewed for a Season 3 and moves over to HBO Max

Lock Jaw 09-22-2020 08:13 PM

Supergirl ending with season 6

McLegend 09-22-2020 10:19 PM

I don’t watch Supergirl so I don’t know if this applies to that show.

Everyone on The Flash just kind of seems like they are not interested anymore. So I’m not sure how much longer The Flash will go on for.

Lock Jaw 09-22-2020 11:11 PM

The Flash Episode ___:

*Spotlight character gets frustrated and storms out*

*Random character follows them and gives them a pep-talk*

*Spotlight character learns an important lesson by the end*

Next Time on The Flash:

*Spotlight character forgets all about lesson*

McLegend 09-23-2020 05:02 PM

They need some new blood.

slik 09-23-2020 05:17 PM

upcoming frightening thought.....

Bendis will totally get to write a CRISIS

In Bendis's first issue of Young Justice he made it a point to re-iterated their had been "7 Crises" in DC and that each time a crisis happened things got messed up (like people forgetting Connor Kent)....

In this week's Action Comics he reveals Young Justice villain Dr. Glory, responsible for Connor Kent's disappearance, as well as the Invisible Mafia leader Leone are actually from Earth 3...and that Dr. Glory had jumped multiverses 7 times before...

I bet Bendis re-writes DC history so that this scientist Dr. Glory is reponsible for every DC Crisis by multiverse hopping and it having some weird effect on things when she does...

I bet he does end up getting Justice League or a CRISIS book and re-writes all of DC history...

In other news, Zack Snyder is going to end up doing more shoots for his Justice League cut, with Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) all being confirmed as being involved in the reshoots.

Lock Jaw 09-23-2020 07:07 PM

Pretty surreal the amount of money they are pouring into the Zack Snyder cut

Damian Rey 2.0 09-23-2020 08:54 PM

That's interesting. I have a pretty strong sense that this will get enough views and boost subscribers to the point of HBO basically telling Snyder to finish the story and end up writing a check for him to produce a sequel.

There's already a ton of buzz on this, they're gnarly comfortable in investing in the project, and a 4 part miniseries prob fits Snyder's vision and serves his talents more than cramming all his ideas into a movie.

I keep reading it as Dan Dildo.

Lock Jaw 10-10-2020 12:26 AM

"The Green Lantern live-action series for HBO Max has revealed its central characters, which will include the Earth's first Green Lantern, Alan Scott -- who will be gay just like in the Earth-2 comics and DC's updated main timeline -- and all-new corps members.

According to Deadline, joining Scott are Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro and Kilowog."

No sign of Hal Jordan or John Stewart....

Lock Jaw 10-10-2020 12:28 AM

Not a fan of Alan Scott being gay either.... Feel like it does a disservice to the characters of his wife and children.... pick another character who doesn't have decades of history as a married heterosexual man with kids to turn gay....
