Have they stopped with the counting wins/losses things already?

The weekly format will only ever draw the current niche market, which continues to shrink.

I don’t think it’ll work like you think it works. Wrestling doesn’t function well in seasons. It defeats the purpose and I see it as being less accessible rather than more.

I think they keep it up, but the idiots worked out that they need to deliberately book guys under to keep them from being #1 Contender for the World Title, so they only acknowledge it when they want to. Like TNA.

Besides, didnt they already tell us it was Kenny's fault

Seriously, Khan seems like such a Self Mark Doofus that he will just spill the behind the scenes details to anybody in order to appear cool.

“I was trying to be too safe and I let the professionals handle the stuff and they are guys who don’t understand wrestling,” Khan said. “It was professional pyrotechnic guys. They totally s--t the bed, these guys. I ended up not paying them. It was like $100,000 they ended up refunding for all the expenses of the match. So I didn’t end up paying for the (exploding) barbed wire deathmatch, which I shouldn’t have. They screwed up royally. We put together something great. Kenny and Jon worked their asses off and all they had to do was set up the final explosion. This is because we used professional pyrotechnic people who are supposed to know.”

What an absolute asshole.

Yep. Try using unprofessional pyro guys next time, you fuckwit. Here’s a scoop: It was a bullshit idea on the surface of it.

He completely dodged Bubba calling him out on the false promises of wins and losses counting and the sports style presentation. Those being my biggest disappointments with aew.

He can’t handle criticism well. And it’s not like there is actually a good retort for it. They simply lied to the fans.

I mean I guess I'm the guy who has also been going around suggesting a rassling show with no rassling on it, so what do I know....

I just think that there needs to be a "drastic evolution"/"shift" in presentation and delivery if there is any chance of expanding beyond the shrinking niche market.

Need someone who just thinks completely differently than the "norm"

I wasn’t saying that in a dismissive way or anything — I agree with your overall point there. I think streaming would be the golden feather in a promotion’s cap. Unless it exposes them to lots of ridicule, lol. I definitely think presentation and formatting needs to be re-thought. Not “revolutionized,” per se — but just tidied up and smartened up.

That being said, as much as people may not want to admit this: Vince McMahon has actually been at the forefront of this. I mean, I don’t like the sterilized aesthetic of his shows. And his formatting doesn’t retain live viewers on TV that well. But the guy sells 1-hr versions of his show to markets that also by the 3-hr version. He creates a tedious product and then makes people pay for a more exciting one.

I’d rather someone other than Vince be at the forefront. The completionist in me would like to see a wrestling product I can engulf myself in entirely each week. But that is probably not going to happen unless one of those outside influences takes hold. The other option is that WWE expands to the point that Vince cannot control it anymore and accidental good takes place under his umbrella that is sort of self-contained (in a way that even NXT isn’t now).

Has anyone even tried rasslin in a seasonal format?

I never watched Lucha Underground. Is that a thing they did? DaveWadding would know.

screech 07-07-2021 09:08 AM

Also again: I would 100p watch your non-rasslin rasslin show, Lock Jaw.

Yeah LU was seasonal. And more narrative with cinematic scenes and stories. It was very good. Also it seemed that they were able to highlight all the workers to make them look their best similar but better than ECW.

For example, El Texano came off like one of the most bad ass workers in the world. Like a Mexican Stan Hansen.

Angelico was like an evolved Jeff Hardy.

John Morrison came off like HBK 2.0.

Ricochet was easily one of the best in the world.

that was bad for the wrestler when the 4th season was slow to come out and the wrestlers could not work other places. till impact was able to make a deal with them.

No but there's a difference between keeping track of them and have them actually mean something.

Having guys go on a tear on aew dark whenever you need them to challenge for a title does not give any weight to wins and losses.

screech 07-07-2021 12:15 PM

I think Britt Baker even brought up stacking Dark wins a few weeks ago on Dynamite.

I can’t watch that video, but if he is calling himself Malakai Blacks and cutting promos that contain that quote underneath, then the WWE really wasn’t the problem there.

Malakai Black and yes. Nice little 4 minute video there.

Badly want AEW to come to San Diego

Mr. Nerfect 07-09-2021 04:41 AM

Basically all wrestling shows are going to be sold out for a little while. It’s no achievement right now.

Latest rating was a pretty big flop from AEW.

Jordan 07-09-2021 08:30 AM

I don't think that it was a flop, not that it was great but it was average. Also it was a great show top to bottom which is more than you can say for WWE. The shows WWE produce are so bad that they are getting the lowest ratings they ever had since 93. I mean WWE is absolute shit from an ass and AEW is either "meh" or really fuggin good. The "meh" absolutely comes from the lack of fans and overuse of Jacksonville. Meanwhile WWE had been touring before live crowds for years and have been total shit from an ass.

AEW has the lowest ratings anyone with that sort of platform has had ever. You’re allowed to enjoy it, but “really fuggin good” is entirely subjective. What isn’t subjective is whether the show makes sense and whether it draws an audience. WWE’s creative issues are an unrelated issue, honestly. They could be great or horrible and AEW still sucks in its own vacuum.

Well, I didn’t say stop having fun. That’s just a lie to make yourself seem like a victim, but at least you got the first two parts right. White noise, arrested development, nonsensical and unartistic crap. It is also unappealing to most wrestling fans, evidently. TPWW is usually wrong.

I was thinking about this earlier, lol. It’ll be interesting to see if that happens, but wrestling promotions do kind of generate the fans they deserve.

He lives in the bubble. He either thinks his show is great or thinks that everyone else outside the Cornette sphere thinks his show is great. Mark Henry is/was a host on that show, wasn’t he? He probably thought he had more free advertising. He wasn’t expecting a guy to ask logical questions in response to the product.

"Fat Bastard" has some severe issues that at least begin with delusions. He claims that William Patrick Corgan bailed him out of jail. I find that hard to believe. Someone should probably actually check to see if this dude has guns. Because he is a threat to society.

Noid, for all his faults, isn't an overt mental case. He's closer to 40 tweet fanfic promo than rush the ring and threaten to do it again.

Just another attempt to slam me as a person from someone who tries to get mean because they don’t have the substance to form actual points.

Not a Cornette fan. He was sharing anti-Cornette stuff before he got shut down too. He tagged Corny in a post for attention. Not the same thing.

Slurp a couple oysters with maybe some horseradish or a mignonette sauce and then just house a lobster roll.

The complex where Arthur Ashe Stadium is (the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center) has 2 other smaller stadiums also that seem like they would be cool for wrestling if they ever want to run a smaller place...

Louis Armstrong Stadium (seats 14,000)

Two seperate problems, though.

WWE is the bigger brand trying to cast a larger net to get more people to watch... but they're doing it clumsily and insultingly and trying to remove all the wrestling from wrestling almost to the point of parody. But an unaware parody, because they're completely playing it straight by deliberately pushing people fans express active displeasure in, burying people fans get behind, and hiring talent seemingly just off of any buzz they may have generated elsewhere with zero plan to actually use, push, or promote them. They put on shitty shows because they insist on deviating from what made them good to begin with.

AEW, conversely, is putting on the same shit for the niche audience who already watch. They're not going to or apparently trying to grow, and their stupid shit is "on brand" for people who like it already. Doesn't mean it still isn't insulting shit most of the time - it's just "our" insulting shit.

It's like driving through a town with two competing radio staions, one is a ClearChannel pop-py, saccrine top 40, and the other is owned by some local hipster with microbrew money and only plays shit from local country bands in his area because that's what *he* likes. So, unless you want to hear a plethora of either disposable autotuned it-girls or a variety of twangy pickup truck ballads, you're shit out of luck.

TL;DR - AEW fans don't have to hijack shows, because they're already getting their dumb shit fix they expect. WWE fans expect better, but the company is clearly not interested in giving it to them because it's all about what Vince wants and the shareholders expect monetarily.

Seems good. Couldn't get a hold of my only IRL wrassling watching friend to see if he could go as he's away on vacation but bought 2 seats just in case.

If anyone here is waiting to buy later and willing to go solo just PM me and I can sell the seat to you if my friend can't go. Should know next week. Otherwise I'll just throw it on Stubhub if I need to.

What exactly are you asking? Are you asking me what I think AEW should be doing differently or what I think their fans should be doing differently? Because either way, having fans in attendance or AEW touring has little to nothing to do with anything you just quoted from me outside of the concept of live fans hijacking shows. That same pandemic happened across the street to WWE as well, and they didn't tour or have live fans.

On the whole, for AEW, the "they're new" thing is wearing pretty thin as an excuse. Two years is a decent enough time to at least get the concept of writing and booking up to snuff. With the minds they have backstage, there's no reason why overall it should be as bad as it is, but I'd imagine it has to do with criticisims being met with the "yeah, but..." thing Lance Storm talked about TNA telling him when he was asked to critique shows by RoH and TNA talent.

For the fans, again, the reason why they aren't hijacking shows is because they're already getting shit they want.

Outside of that, please don't fall into this "any criticism of AEW is just hating" mindset. "It's been good" is relative. For both companies. Hell, for every company worth mentioning.

Mr. Nerfect 07-15-2021 03:12 AM

Lol, my interest in wrestling is dipping even lower. How can anyone care about this shit? Ooh, the Best Friends have a protege! Nothing matters. Who honestly gives a fuck about all this stuff just happening?

AEW catering to a bunch of mouth-breathers who are embarrassing to be around is not a good thing for wrestling as a whole. This is the problem ROH had too. There aren’t enough hardcore wrestling nerds left to sustain business on their own. Yet wrestling promotions are doing their best to make sure that they’re the only ones who are going to watch this shit.

The shows commit the same cardinal sins as the WWE, by and large.

-Storylines that don’t go anywhere.

-Matches that aren’t important.

-Bad comedy segments.

-Booking so that anyone that feels special very quickly becomes “just another guy.”

What stupid shit?

You can’t honestly believe that the WWE hasn’t wanted to generate more fans. You can argue about their ability to do that, but they definitely want a healthy enough base to, you know...exist.

They aim for that average yank. They have big international markets too. You can argue that this homogenization of their product is bad, but they have specifically set themselves up in an attempt to be wrestling’s version of Disney. Their success at that is debatable. Their bottom line is fantastic. How relevant they seem to be in culture is not.

But AEW is no more relevant. It has no more fans. It’s fans aren’t more high-brow or desirable from a marketing standpoint. A high percentage of them are obsessive, and they’re probably less likely to come from a regular slice of American life. The WWE product’s engagement might not be the most intelligent and stimulating of conversations, but their overall reach and popularity is just much...better. It feels way more “normal” for wrestling fans to be WWE fans and just like shirtless Roman Reigns beating everyone and shit.

As far as AEW’s stupid shit goes: The Dark Order still exists. How anyone can defend it at this point, when it’s been there and been awful since the beginning, is beyond me. They’ve fucked up Adam Page. They’ve fucked up Cody Rhodes. They’ve fucked up MJF. They’ve fucked up FTR. They’ve fucked up Christian. They’ve fucked up Team Taz. They let Matt Hardy do things. They give Chris Jericho freedom to follow his worst instincts. Orange Cassidy and Joey Janela have jobs. Michael Nakazawa, Brandon Cutler, Festus and Karl Anderson are featured in the top heel faction. “69 me, Don” is an actual line that was uttered on AEW television.

The show is embarrassed to be actual pro-wrestling. They philosophically can’t admit to themselves that’s what they do, so they have this ironic disposition in relation to it. “You can’t say we’re fake if we’re obvious about being fake.” They don’t realize how that makes them worse. There’s no fidelity to this product. It’s not an honest con. It’s like a preacher telling you that god’s not real, but then still asking for the tithing. It defeats the entire fucking purpose. And that is why you have washed up comedians making Twitter posts about how wrestling is so fucking stupid and if you like it then you’re fucking stupid, and it’s a fair enough gripe even though technically that person is stupid for thinking they even TRY anymore. But it doesn’t matter. It’s not going to absolve them of any stank.

Wrestling without the wrestling part is even worse than wrestling to people, and AEW thinks they can get around that.

It’s laughable how every belt in this company is a world title. Even something as stupid as the FTW Championship. Last I checked, they’ve barely done shows outside of Florida. The IWGP US and IMPACT titles have more credibility than the AEW World Championship.

I’m asking what you think they should be doing to grow their audience.

Supreme Olajuwon 07-15-2021 11:57 AM

I like AEW but I’m definitely not above criticizing it. But in a time where literally almost every business is stalled because of a global pandemic, I don’t think it’s fair to criticize them for not growing beyond their current fanbase.

Supreme Olajuwon 07-15-2021 11:58 AM

If in 3-6 months they’re still where they are, then I will totally agree with you.

Lock Jaw 07-15-2021 12:47 PM

3-6 months is not a long time at all. Nothing will/can change in that short a time.

slik 07-15-2021 02:33 PM

They aren't trying to get new fans.

No wrestling company is trying to get new fans. No wrestling company has tried to get new fans for a decade.

They STARTED a stable rivalry with a War Games match. You can definitely legitimately criticize their storytelling.

I wholeheartedly agree with this criticism. Many wrestling pundits have taken WWE to task for not ending feuds after HIAC.

Wow

I figured they would drop against the NBA Finals, good for them

Their storytelling is HORRIBLE. That apologist basically contradicts themselves in their defense of it, but AEW gets to have its cake and eat it too.

And that’s not an interesting read. It’s a wanky fanfic swoon piece that picks and chooses what part of the narrative told it wants to keep canon. If Kenny Omega is such a great wrestler and “the best” or whatever, then why does he need to cheat to keep the belt? And if the story is about Adam Page believing in himself, why was he such a confident character earlier? It’s a bad story, told bad.

People have been saying that since the start. There’s always some excuse to not be honest about this show’s performance. There’s some carrot to chase and postpone criticism, whilst being “totally honest about it” the whole time, of course.
