To preface, I really like AEW but I am getting the impression that the inmates who are complete marks for themselves run the asylum there.

I appreciate the in-ring talent, but every wrestler shouldn’t be booked to be in a 20+ minute match with 5-6 near falls. It’s ok to have tiers fellas.

I’m glad that AEW has already had some positive impact on WWE (better pay for wrestlers, NXT show), but I’m getting the feeling that the marks in charge of AEW would rather continue their indy-ness rather than make mandatory changes to appeal to a mass audience and make a huge difference in professional wrestling.

With that being said, I wish them the best because I love Moxley, Jericho, and MJF.

Watching Guerrero vs Lesnar from the Cow Palace. So emotional right now. Fuck!

Eddie’s back :(

When did Brian Hebner leave WWE?

GD 09-22-2019 08:24 AM

Rollins is in the same weight class as Guerrero. It’s amusing that the previous cruiserweight weight limit was 220 lbs

GD 09-22-2019 08:45 AM

Reliving Daniel Bryan vs Lesnar from last year

GD 09-22-2019 08:47 AM

I just realized the referees have brand specific logos...unlike the first brand extension.

I remember when Chris Jericho won the WCW cruiserweight championship from Rey Mysterio Jr. Just imaging Jericho as a cruiser now is so weird.

I liked it better when Melina did it. And I'm not even the biggest fan of hers.

You know, UE could use someone of the uteral persuasion in their fold. Maybe "Evil Io". She can complete the clean sweep of titles for the group.

I said TITLES...

This is where I am 100%. It gets exhausting to watch shows where everyone gets their shit in. One thing I loved about NXT was that Cameron Grimes beat Sean Maluta with a single move. That was so fucking refreshing.

AEW also seem to be hiring a lot of their friends. It's like when Hogan went to WCW and you started to see Duggan, Beefcake and Honky Tonk show up. Or when Hogan and Bischoff went to TNA. The big difference is that at least Hogan is a star.

I only disagree with it because he kinda sidestepped the questions by bombarding everyone with low-hanging fruit.

Kinda funny that Kenny King is championing the business, but how is the question "why is rey rey being disrespected?" answered with "because some indyriffic chick pulled a tampon out her twat"? How is the [attempted] question "why is wrestling not disrespected in other places around the world" being rebutted with the Joey Ryan dick flip... which originated in Japan, and the media there still treats it as a legit thing? And throwing New Day in with that jizz really seemed like a cheap way to get a larger bout of attention/heat to trend on twitter, especially with the "not cool for adults" which is kind of the point of ND as a whole; fitting that role of kid-centric attention getters. I'm really surprised he didn't go for something about two unknowns beating eachother with light tubes or some backyarder who went viral. If this rationale were followed back in the day during the height of the Monday Night Wars, he'd point out the match between Beulah and Fonzie in ECW to explain why someone may have scoffed at The Rock or Sting. If he wasn't trying to be a heel here, he sure is a natural at it.

Please absorb my comments before responding, because I am in no means defending Joey Ryan, nor do I disagree there is ridiculous shit and will be the first to admit I usually fall on the Cornette side of things when it comes to presentation. And again, it's kinda funny that Kenny King is bringing up a valid point about a legend being disrespected. That's almost like if New Jack would tweet telling people to calm down and not doing anything rash or violent in the moment and that cooler heads will prevail.

TL;DR What I'm saying is the answer to why was Brawn being shit on by Keith Olbermann is not Joey Ryan's penis, and Brad's answer being such made it seem like an irrational mad-on. Like he and Vince had a one-night stand, and didn't call him back after, so now all wrestling is "a carny industry".

I find it very unlikely that people shitting on a WWE wrestler promoting a show during a baseball game would know about any of those things in the first place.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-23-2019 07:48 AM

the point he was making was that wrestling is lame and comes across as lame 99 percent of the time.

Evil Vito 09-23-2019 09:30 AM

I don’t think there is anything wrestling can do to be seen as “cool” to non-fans ever again, even if it went full bore in trying to market itself as a legitimate sport and was devoid of comedy or any of that. The industry is too far gone in the eyes of the mainstream.

Evil Vito 09-23-2019 09:37 AM

That’s why I personally just don’t really get people getting up on their soapbox complaining about “THIS PROMOTION/WRESTLER/ANGLE IS KILLING THE WRESTLING BUSINESS!”

It’s never going to be mainstream again. It will always remain a niche market. Fortunately there’s still plenty of variety out there so watch what you enjoy and quit being a curmudgeon.

I mean nothing is impossible. I'm sure JCP in the 80s had its fair share of shlock (I'm not super well-versed with the promotion), but the shit I have seen felt gritty and kind of cool.

Even ECW, despite being fucking trash t.v., had that rock and roll vibe about it.

The problem is, WWE monopolized wrestling. And honestly, it's fine that WWE is the circus if there are other viable options. But, instead, it has influenced literally every promotion in North America -- even if they think they're anti-WWE, it's a bunch of self-impressed Indy geeks who are so focused on being anti-wwe that it ruins everything. Treating wrestling as a sport is a wonderful idea, but doing so in a way where everyone is like WAY TOO INTENSE is over the top and dumb.

And to delve deeper, WWE can't help but make everything decidedly uncool. We talk about it all the time, but once anything seems cool, they'll sink their stink-claws into it and ruin it. You have this 70-plus-year-old owner and his inner circle of people who NEVER had their finger on the pulse of anything mainstream who drive the creative (actually I'll give them the rock and wrestling connection). Plus, the insistence on wrestlers utilizing branded language makes it so much worse. Watching wrestlers in interviews calling fans "The WWE Universe" and referring to themselves as "WWE superstars" on a pop-culture-based show like Hot Ones is one way to ensure nobody takes you seriously.

Then, with something like AEW, that demo is literally the anti-pussy. It's unfortunate because IMO Cody Rhodes oozes suaveness. And if the Bucks removed their heads from their asses and stopped catering to smart marks they could have something. But, I digress... just look at those AEW crowds. Christ. I would not want to go to one of those shows based on how bad it seems like it'd smell.

So, I'll agree that it's HIGHLY unlikely wrestling can dig itself out of this whole. However, if someone got involved who was an honest-to-goodness great writer/creative mind who didn't have an affinity for putting forth embarrassing fucking trash, I'd like to see what happened. This hypothetical person would also need to be unimpeded by morons and have a thorough understanding of pop culture.

Exactly, this stuff is not the reason why the mainstream dont think wrestling is cool. This is stuff that a large portion of wrestling fans think is not cool. The stuff the IWC deem as cool is equally as lame in their eyes.

There's certain wrestling shit that mainstream people love. The first two names that spring to mind are Ric Flair and Randy Savage. Especially their 80s stuff.

Savage because of how psychedelic he was and Flair because he was a rockstar.

I don't necessarily disagree with you at all. But it's not like no wrestling things appeal to the mainstream. Yeah, a 6-star classic between kenny omega and mike quakenbush won't do the trick... but there's certain elements of pro wrestling that do appeal to the masses.

Also, mainstream folks seem to get a kick out of the Rock. I'd say Steve Austin too.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-23-2019 11:57 AM

I guess it's more the personalities themselves that appeal to the mainstream. Of which there are absolutely none anymore. Whether it's presented as a sport or as a WWE circus, it means fuck-all without those transcendent characters that speak to people of all walks of life.

Given the WWE is so brand-oriented, it's impossible to develop those kinds of personalities.

Cornette’s quote on the matter is something along the lines of “Just because wrestling has been killed it doesn’t make it cool to dig up the corpse and fuck it.”

Emperor Smeat 09-23-2019 03:39 PM

Wrestling being "uncool" is pretty much the fault of Vince and the top wrestling companies failing to adjust to the changing times and tastes of fans and the mainstream.

Vince in the sense he's the one person who has held the most power over the industry since the fall of WCW and once he no longer needed to worry about competition, he started to give less of a shit of what fans and the mainstream cared about.

Top wrestling companies in the sense of neither WWE nor Impact adjusted to the changing times post-AA. WWE started to cater a lot more towards Vince and the idea of wrestling as a brand and not as something full of creative and quality performers. Impact was stuck way too much in a late 90s mindset and kept having morons with too much control running the company.

Then you have stuff like ROH which helped contribute towards modern wrestling being more work-rate based but failed to capitalize on it because they couldn't grow as a company due to poor ownership. Also the immense damage MMA did towards making wrestling less cool in the mainstream when UFC had their boom in the mid-2000s.

WWE seems to be interested the most in Jake Atlas while AEW seems to be interested the most in Atlas, Artemis Spencer, and Black Taurus.

In regards to Atlas, Meltzer reported that working in WWE has been a childhood dream for Atlas but he's currently considering offers from several companies.

He's not wrong but his whole point was that it's not cool to the mainstream. It's never been a cool thing. What sports/entertainment property in the 90s didn't strive? That was the last time wrestling was huge but it still didn't hold any weight to the NBA, NFL, and MLB. Hell NASCAR was bigger than wrestling in the 90's and early 2ks. They're all forms of entertainment and each has it's own die hards with some carry over. Wrestling has the advantage of being able to write the story but it also comes with the fake narrative.

If wrestling was looked at more as a movie or TV show the mainstream might look different on it. After all any movie or TV show is also fake if you use that logic. Instead it's pushed as a sport that isn't really a sport. Sports Entertainment is the problem, if pro wrestling is left to it's self it can build and grab new fans but it's never going to be mainstream cool. In these times I'm not sure if any thing physical will remain mainstream cool for long though.

Oh, I see the Kenny King tweet now. I was playing around on an old laptop and I didn’t get the context of his reply.

I don’t agree that it is low-hanging fruit. Well, it is low-hanging fruit, but that’s the point. It’s the stuff that does go that low that colors everything else. Your team is often as good as its weakest component, and a lot of commentators would not give good wrestlers the benefit of the doubt over bad wrestlers. Especially with WWE itself being so hokey.

So I don’t think he’s wrong. People look down on wrestling because when it comes to those who taste matters to, and help define it, wrestling deserves to be looked down on.

Completely disagree. I mean, it might not ever get back to where it has been, but there is no reason to keep fucking it up just because it has already been fucked up. “Everyone else is doing it” has always been a shitty moral stance, in my opinion.

And I think people are really easy to work. They still get worked by politics, reality TV, marketing, MMA/boxing hype, buzzwords, “based on a true story,” gossip, religion and a bunch of other things. Everything is pro-wrestling except pro-wrestling. It doesn’t even try anymore, and it’s a damn shame.

Ideally that would be the best but WWE has been trying for months to get FOX to bite on a tv deal for the brand even if FOX isn't as interested and has zero interest if its not live on Fridays.

WWE could easily solve 205 Live's crowd woes if they just taped it before SmackDown but Vince has been way too stubborn on the "Live" aspect of the brand's name.

I don’t watch much NXT anymore because it just makes me sad knowing the endgame is either shitty WWE booking or endless “developmental”.

That being said, Keith Lee is a fucking star waiting to be made.

Lock Jaw 09-25-2019 12:44 AM

Haven't seen too much of him.... last I saw of him I was wondering how someone who tells people to "bask in his glory" was a face..... is he still doing that? Is he still a face?

Yes and he's fantastic!

It airing on USA makes it way less developmental than it ever was.

If you haven't seen this match and want to see wrestling presented as a sport, please watch. This is five stars.

By the way, I'm actually excited to watch NXT tonight. Probably because I know I am going to get something really good. I never feel that way about Raw or Smackdown. (I refuse to call it Smackdown!, It's Smackdown. because it sucks.)

Jesus christ, what an entrance, hopping up the steps with steam shooting out the "jetpack".:rofl::rofl:

It's alleged Vince actually wanted him to be launched from the floor over the ropes into the ring, but it was pointed out it would be a safety hazard and cost a shit ton for some cobbled together jet pack.

Weird. Atlas had a tryout at the PC in December and didn't get an offer. It's amazing how quickly the atmosphere has shifted.

Who's that champ I see? Rhetorical question, because they all know the answer is KEITH LEE

Looks like NXT UK also got affected by the upcoming Wednesday Night War and WWE's new tv contracts.

Will be moving from Wednesdays at 3PM EST to now Thursdays at 3PM EST on the Network starting next week.

AEW's official website is second rate. It doesn't look as refined as WWE's. Same goes for their graphics department.

Likely a mix of them still being understaffed in certain areas and whoever they have currently in charge of that stuff has not been doing a good job.

If there is one area where WWE usually excels very well in doing, its graphics and video-based stuff. Live production can be hit-or-miss but their graphics and pre-taped stuff work are usually top notch.

I want to say they've had a lot of time to perfect the process but they've consistently put out quality productions. Even with Jericho's floating IC title and Mick Foley's floating referee head.

The PAC vs Hangman graphic just doesn't seem right. There's way too much going on.

Luger was doing the "sweating just by talking" promo long before Shane it would seem.

I'll never be sure of Hunter's motives but the community aspect that he's created around the NXT brand is PrettyCool.

According to the Observer, ROH recently gave a big offer to Matt Taven to keep him in the company and its rumored to be around 3 times the amount of what upper tier NXT talent make.

Between that and recent comments made by ROH's COO, the company isn't getting out of their mess or decline any time soon.

According to the Observer, 205 Live's move to Fridays is only meant to be a temporary thing until WWE actually makes an official decision on the brand's future.

I am still hoping for a merger. While the performers are putting out quality matches, the show is dying a death in front of the larger crowds. It's only to the determinant of the cruiserweights.

Seems WWE's upcoming move to FOX is already taking a bit of a hit. Both DISH and Sling recently dropped FOX and its associated networks a week before SmackDown debut on FOX. Only bright side was not all of FOX's main network stations were dropped from DISH at least for the time being.
