I hope the good talent goes to AEW

To preface, I really like AEW but I am getting the impression that the inmates who are complete marks for themselves run the asylum there.
I appreciate the in-ring talent, but every wrestler shouldn’t be booked to be in a 20+ minute match with 5-6 near falls. It’s ok to have tiers fellas. I’m glad that AEW has already had some positive impact on WWE (better pay for wrestlers, NXT show), but I’m getting the feeling that the marks in charge of AEW would rather continue their indy-ness rather than make mandatory changes to appeal to a mass audience and make a huge difference in professional wrestling. With that being said, I wish them the best because I love Moxley, Jericho, and MJF. |

Watching Guerrero vs Lesnar from the Cow Palace. So emotional right now. Fuck!

Eddie’s back :(

When did Brian Hebner leave WWE?

Rollins is in the same weight class as Guerrero. It’s amusing that the previous cruiserweight weight limit was 220 lbs

Reliving Daniel Bryan vs Lesnar from last year

I just realized the referees have brand specific logos...unlike the first brand extension.

AEW also seem to be hiring a lot of their friends. It's like when Hogan went to WCW and you started to see Duggan, Beefcake and Honky Tonk show up. Or when Hogan and Bischoff went to TNA. The big difference is that at least Hogan is a star. |

Kinda funny that Kenny King is championing the business, but how is the question "why is rey rey being disrespected?" answered with "because some indyriffic chick pulled a tampon out her twat"? How is the [attempted] question "why is wrestling not disrespected in other places around the world" being rebutted with the Joey Ryan dick flip... which originated in Japan, and the media there still treats it as a legit thing? And throwing New Day in with that jizz really seemed like a cheap way to get a larger bout of attention/heat to trend on twitter, especially with the "not cool for adults" which is kind of the point of ND as a whole; fitting that role of kid-centric attention getters. I'm really surprised he didn't go for something about two unknowns beating eachother with light tubes or some backyarder who went viral. If this rationale were followed back in the day during the height of the Monday Night Wars, he'd point out the match between Beulah and Fonzie in ECW to explain why someone may have scoffed at The Rock or Sting. If he wasn't trying to be a heel here, he sure is a natural at it. Please absorb my comments before responding, because I am in no means defending Joey Ryan, nor do I disagree there is ridiculous shit and will be the first to admit I usually fall on the Cornette side of things when it comes to presentation. And again, it's kinda funny that Kenny King is bringing up a valid point about a legend being disrespected. That's almost like if New Jack would tweet telling people to calm down and not doing anything rash or violent in the moment and that cooler heads will prevail. TL;DR What I'm saying is the answer to why was Brawn being shit on by Keith Olbermann is not Joey Ryan's penis, and Brad's answer being such made it seem like an irrational mad-on. Like he and Vince had a one-night stand, and didn't call him back after, so now all wrestling is "a carny industry". |
I find it very unlikely that people shitting on a WWE wrestler promoting a show during a baseball game would know about any of those things in the first place.
|
the point he was making was that wrestling is lame and comes across as lame 99 percent of the time.
|
I don’t think there is anything wrestling can do to be seen as “cool” to non-fans ever again, even if it went full bore in trying to market itself as a legitimate sport and was devoid of comedy or any of that. The industry is too far gone in the eyes of the mainstream.
|
That’s why I personally just don’t really get people getting up on their soapbox complaining about “THIS PROMOTION/WRESTLER/ANGLE IS KILLING THE WRESTLING BUSINESS!”
It’s never going to be mainstream again. It will always remain a niche market. Fortunately there’s still plenty of variety out there so watch what you enjoy and quit being a curmudgeon. |
|
Who has ever watched wrestling because it was cool? It wasn't even cool in the 90s.

Even ECW, despite being fucking trash t.v., had that rock and roll vibe about it. The problem is, WWE monopolized wrestling. And honestly, it's fine that WWE is the circus if there are other viable options. But, instead, it has influenced literally every promotion in North America -- even if they think they're anti-WWE, it's a bunch of self-impressed Indy geeks who are so focused on being anti-wwe that it ruins everything. Treating wrestling as a sport is a wonderful idea, but doing so in a way where everyone is like WAY TOO INTENSE is over the top and dumb. And to delve deeper, WWE can't help but make everything decidedly uncool. We talk about it all the time, but once anything seems cool, they'll sink their stink-claws into it and ruin it. You have this 70-plus-year-old owner and his inner circle of people who NEVER had their finger on the pulse of anything mainstream who drive the creative (actually I'll give them the rock and wrestling connection). Plus, the insistence on wrestlers utilizing branded language makes it so much worse. Watching wrestlers in interviews calling fans "The WWE Universe" and referring to themselves as "WWE superstars" on a pop-culture-based show like Hot Ones is one way to ensure nobody takes you seriously. Then, with something like AEW, that demo is literally the anti-pussy. It's unfortunate because IMO Cody Rhodes oozes suaveness. And if the Bucks removed their heads from their asses and stopped catering to smart marks they could have something. But, I digress... just look at those AEW crowds. Christ. I would not want to go to one of those shows based on how bad it seems like it'd smell. So, I'll agree that it's HIGHLY unlikely wrestling can dig itself out of this whole. However, if someone got involved who was an honest-to-goodness great writer/creative mind who didn't have an affinity for putting forth embarrassing fucking trash, I'd like to see what happened. This hypothetical person would also need to be unimpeded by morons and have a thorough understanding of pop culture. |

Savage because of how psychedelic he was and Flair because he was a rockstar. I don't necessarily disagree with you at all. But it's not like no wrestling things appeal to the mainstream. Yeah, a 6-star classic between kenny omega and mike quakenbush won't do the trick... but there's certain elements of pro wrestling that do appeal to the masses. Also, mainstream folks seem to get a kick out of the Rock. I'd say Steve Austin too. |
I guess it's more the personalities themselves that appeal to the mainstream. Of which there are absolutely none anymore. Whether it's presented as a sport or as a WWE circus, it means fuck-all without those transcendent characters that speak to people of all walks of life.
Given the WWE is so brand-oriented, it's impossible to develop those kinds of personalities. |

Wrestling being "uncool" is pretty much the fault of Vince and the top wrestling companies failing to adjust to the changing times and tastes of fans and the mainstream.
Vince in the sense he's the one person who has held the most power over the industry since the fall of WCW and once he no longer needed to worry about competition, he started to give less of a shit of what fans and the mainstream cared about. Top wrestling companies in the sense of neither WWE nor Impact adjusted to the changing times post-AA. WWE started to cater a lot more towards Vince and the idea of wrestling as a brand and not as something full of creative and quality performers. Impact was stuck way too much in a late 90s mindset and kept having morons with too much control running the company. Then you have stuff like ROH which helped contribute towards modern wrestling being more work-rate based but failed to capitalize on it because they couldn't grow as a company due to poor ownership. Also the immense damage MMA did towards making wrestling less cool in the mainstream when UFC had their boom in the mid-2000s. |

According to the Observer, both AEW and WWE had reps at this past week's PWG Battle of Los Angeles tournament.
WWE seems to be interested the most in Jake Atlas while AEW seems to be interested the most in Atlas, Artemis Spencer, and Black Taurus. In regards to Atlas, Meltzer reported that working in WWE has been a childhood dream for Atlas but he's currently considering offers from several companies. |
Shepard's rant, from just after the generic rasslin' insults up until he gets to the New Day, doesn't sound that much different from a Cornette rant. And the problem is, he isn't wrong.
When he gets to the New Day, he's wrong as fuck. Because holy shit, who WOULDN'T be at least mildly amused by one guy passing out pancakes, a second twerking, while a third plays trombone? It's played just straight enough to work. The thing is, the nerds, who will likely feel slighted by the Truth, will just double down on the Dick Wrestler, Tampon Girl, and Pockets. Because that's all they know how to do. |
According to the Observer's Bryan Alvarez, WWE is currently expected to make an announcement regarding 205 Live's future very soon.

If wrestling was looked at more as a movie or TV show the mainstream might look different on it. After all any movie or TV show is also fake if you use that logic. Instead it's pushed as a sport that isn't really a sport. Sports Entertainment is the problem, if pro wrestling is left to it's self it can build and grab new fans but it's never going to be mainstream cool. In these times I'm not sure if any thing physical will remain mainstream cool for long though. |

I don’t agree that it is low-hanging fruit. Well, it is low-hanging fruit, but that’s the point. It’s the stuff that does go that low that colors everything else. Your team is often as good as its weakest component, and a lot of commentators would not give good wrestlers the benefit of the doubt over bad wrestlers. Especially with WWE itself being so hokey. So I don’t think he’s wrong. People look down on wrestling because when it comes to those who taste matters to, and help define it, wrestling deserves to be looked down on. Quote:

Yay!

Unfortunately, this just means they’ll be performing in front of an even more empty arena. It should be taped before NXT.
