A bit surprised that WWE.com is doing an article on Seth Rollins topping the PWI 500 this year.

Burn it down, earn the top spot.

Universal Champion Seth Rollins joined a very elite club when it was revealed today that he topped the 2019 “Pro Wrestling Illustrated 500” – the publication’s annual ranking of the top 500 sports-entertainers of the year.

The 29th edition of the “PWI 500” sees Rollins in the No. 1 spot, as selected by the staff of “Pro Wrestling Illustrated.” The selection process is based on achievements during the evaluation period of July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. WWE Superstars earned the top four spots on the list, with Rollins being followed by Daniel Bryan, United States Champion AJ Styles, and WWE Champion Kofi Kingston.

Rollins’ notable achievements during the timeframe include his two victories over Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title at WrestleMania 35 and SummerSlam, winning the 2019 Royal Rumble and capturing the Raw Tag Team Championship twice, as well as the Intercontinental Title.

A thrilled Rollins told “PWI,” “As difficult as it can be, this is all I ever wanted — to be in this position, to be having this conversation with you — talking about being the absolute best wrestler on the entire planet. I don’t think there is a single part of me that would trade any second of it.”

The Beastslayer joins Bret Hart, “Stone Cold” Austin, Triple H, and John Cena as the only Superstars to earn the No. 1 spot twice.

“Those guys obviously are elite,” Rollins said. “They are in a class all their own. They are Hall of Famers. So, to be mentioned amongst them is pretty special.”

WWE.com congratulates Rollins on this incredible accomplishment.

Since PWI's yearly lists always leans heavily towards WWE and kayfabe, should have been Kofi at #1 since he's been having a better and more entertaining year than Rollins.

Also apparently PWI gets bribes for their lists since supposedly wrestlers and companies have been paying to get spots for some time.

Bad News Gertner 08-29-2019 09:23 PM

You mean like 1994 where WCW swept the awards including the Nasty Boys winning tag team of the year lol. I remember Apter was on WCW t.v giving them out.

Lol, the PWI is basically a work anyway, so he's kind of whinging about kayfabe, which is dumb. And it's stepping on the toes of one of his co-workers. Probably not the smartest criticism.

Jerry Lawler vs. Mance Warner ended up being pretty good overall at GCW's 2 Cups Stuffed show. Show itself has been very good soo far.

Was the typical Lawler style indie match combined with some brawling and a bit of hardcore wrestling.

Emperor Smeat 08-31-2019 02:02 AM

Yikes, one of the guys in the 6-man DLC match (Doors, Ladders, & Chairs) at GCW's show gashed his arm/shoulder really badly after a crazy ladder spot involving light tubes.

Bolted to the backstage as fast as possible while yelling in pain. Also got quickly rushed to the hospital going by what the announcers said.

Between NJPW's Royal Quest show, NXT UK's TakeOver Cardiff show, and AEW's All Out show, I had an amazing day of watching wrestling.

Bunch of great matches and enough variety going around to keep things interesting. Add in GCW's show last night and its been a pretty great 24 hours of wrestling.

GD 09-01-2019 12:29 AM

From what I saw today, I enjoyed WALTER vs Tyler Bate the most.

Mr. Nerfect 09-01-2019 02:55 AM

Steve Austin shared a new SmackDown promo. It's got a new logo and besides Austin, Taker and Rock being involved in the commercial (Rock probably just because of his star power), it also features Becky, Seth and Rey -- which may not mean anything, knowing this promotion, but why use them specifically if you're not going to feature them on the show?

Mr. Nerfect 09-01-2019 03:38 AM

Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Charlotte, Daniel Bryan, John Cena and Roman Reigns were the other talent featured. Whatever that means. Michael Cole was the commentator used. No Kevin Owens, Finn Balor, Bayley, Big E or Xavier Woods. I mean, there's lots of talent that weren't used, but if you're putting together a package of the top SmackDown stars, you'd have to try not to include them.

WWE recently caught a megaton of a legal break in regards to their longtime controversy surrounding the status of wrestlers as independent contractors.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">BREAKING: NLRB Says Misclassifying Workers Doesn't Violate Federal Labor Law <a href="https://t.co/QqbkkjHetI">https://t.co/QqbkkjHetI</a></p>&mdash; Robert Lavitt (@rlavitt) <a href="https://twitter.com/rlavitt/status/1167166111940407296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 29, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Between that and the recent court ruling in favor of UFC regarding similar issues, wrestlers lost a lot of legal leverage over WWE and other promotions that follow similar tactics.

I keep waiting for the day when someone prominent brings up Stone Cold's domestic abuse arrests. It NEVER gets mentioned and you think it would nowadays.

Bad News Gertner 09-03-2019 10:38 PM

One of these days someone is going to make a big stink out if it and you'll remember "I heard here first from Iceman King Gertner, reigning King of the Forum and Wrestling Mod"

Emperor Smeat 09-03-2019 11:07 PM

Debra would be the most effective to do it. In terms of PR hit, WWE has way more to lose than Austin if it ever was brought back to the spotlight.

Not only would it bring to light again of their alleged cover-up of Austin's abuses, it would also likely bring to light more of their shady past with female talent. Same for possibly destroying their Women's Revolution/Evolution PR image.

If WWE managed to avoid being involved, they likely would just quietly wait till things cool down again before bringing Austin back in any sort of meaningful role. Already showed that to be the case with Hogan and his N-word controversy.

Bad News Gertner 09-03-2019 11:22 PM

That's what I mean. It's not like he beat some anonymous female. He beat one of the biggest sex symbols in the company during that era. I've been thinking about that for a year or so now. It's literally sitting right there and it's not brought up.

He's was a beer drinking Texan hell raiser. Domestic abuse is like a Wednesday thing.

Emperor Smeat 09-03-2019 11:49 PM

I'd assume its because of the lack of a #MeToo type movement for it unlike with workplace sexual harassment.

Could just be a simple case of the powder keg moment has yet to happen to fuel a lasting movement of that scale or the difference and effectiveness of workplace laws vs. domestic violence laws.

Simple Fan 09-03-2019 11:51 PM

Or that it's in the past and doesn't really matter.

That might happen. Like, well after the time someone prominent brings up Ray Lewis' involvement with a murder yet still being a prominent face of the NFL. Both of those things will take a Lifetime documentary to do any damage, though. That seems to be the way things are handled nowadays.

I really want them to have two distinct rosters with zero crossover. There were rumors about unique sets for PPVs as well. Everything seems bland at the moment. They really need to work on it.

According to Squared Circle Sirens, WWE is currently interested in Scarlett Bordeaux and recently gave her a tryout.

SCS also hinted recently that an official announcement for this year's Mae Young Classic tournament is arriving very soon and had hinted at some possible new competitors for it.

Good on the mic and solid in her gimmick

Even though its not entirely Matt Taven's fault, ROH really needs to ditch his reign and hope a MLW-like revival starts later this month with RUSH winning the belt.

MLW's fortunes spiked this year because crowds have really enjoyed their lucha offerings. Went from barely doing events in big cities to now having Chicago as a hotbed spot and opening up another in Dallas.

Not posted for a bit but read that Scarlet Bordeaux is getting a try out. If she gets signed I will be back to watching more WWE programming.

Also the Tyler Bate/WALTER match was brilliant, pisses on most stuff I’ve seen on the main brand this year.

In fact, Ric says he escalated the situation to WWE executive, Triple H ... but they still couldn't reach an agreement. So, on August 26, he filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to own the term, The Man, specifically as it relates to pro wrestling.

Should be funny if it goes to Court, wwe will undoubtedly play their standard "we're not wrestling we're sports entertainment" card which is an argument that holds about as much water as a sieve and will get laughed out of Court.

Wwe could always claim Becky is a pre-OP tranny, she already sounds like a man, wouldn't shock me to find out shes stuffing Seth like a Thanksgiving Turkey on a daily basis.

ClockShot 09-05-2019 04:04 PM

I KNEW it was only a matter of time before the Naitch chimes in about this whole Becky Lynch "The Man" thing.

WWE could easily shut him up by putting the brakes on whatever Charlotte's planned for.

Might be more due to him already owning the trademark for the "To be The Man ..." catchphrase and being dragged into a legal mess because of WWE trying to sidestep trademark laws.

WWE already got called out twice recently by the USPTO for trying to pull off similar antics with trademark laws.

Personally i'd love to see them having to pay out in court as they weasel their way out of a lot of things, but we all know if that happens they will take it out on his daughter.

Emperor Smeat 09-05-2019 04:57 PM

If they do in regards to punishing his daughter, then it just proves Ric's right about WWE and Triple H's friendship with him was never as close as he was led to believe for years.

Sepholio 09-05-2019 07:26 PM

I bet Ric drops this shit as soon as they put the title back on Charlotte. He's being petty af, that's all this is. Someone using his schtick got more popular than his daughter and got a push and now he's big mad about it.

Sepholio 09-05-2019 07:30 PM

Hell, Ric doesn't even own the trademark for the thing he is bitching about. He's filing for it now. That alone doesn't bode well for his chances of "winning" anything in the circumstance. And I have a feeling the USPTO is going to laugh his claim out of the office; people have been calling themselves "The Man" forever, way before him, and way after him. Everything in his own schtick was taken from someone else ffs.

Simple Fan 09-05-2019 08:44 PM

Ric just wants another match. If she's going to be The Man she has to beat The Man.

Evil Vito 09-05-2019 11:55 PM

In attempting to find some semblance of optimism - if they actually do a re-draft and neither USA nor FOX wants to cross-promote, we can avoid the nonsense “brand pride” storylines that crop up every November.

Flair can't stop people from using the term but he has some legal power when it comes to others making money off of it like WWE has done with Becky's "The Man" shirts.

That seems to be where this dispute revolves around since he is claiming WWE is trying to get around having to pay him any royalties from those shirts. Since they refuse to listen to him, he's now trying to get legal ownership of "The Man" by using his other trademark as the basis.

If he didn't have the "To be The Man" trademark, this would be similar to the Carlton dance ownership dispute and his chances of winning would be almost zero.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-06-2019 10:04 AM

It's business. I don't think it's being done maliciously. My guess is Ric is more in the hole than usual and this was a way he could maybe get some money.

According to The Wrap, the official reason for WWE's recent Creative shakeups was due to WWE feeling Smackdown wasn't at the quality level it needs to be before debuting on FOX and Eric Bischoff catching some backstage heat for being in charge of the botched Erick Rowan look-a-like reveal payoff.

Has the “Who attacked Roman?” angle been botched that badly?

I figured the thing with the doppelgänger was Bryan bringing in a scapegoat to turn the finger of blame away from Rowan before revealing he was behind it all along. Roman speared Bryan cos he knew he was full of shit.

It’s only fucked if the are legit using it as a vehicle to push Rowan as a singles star.
