Giving them money for the greatest co-op game this gen, maybe even of all time, is nothing to be ashamed about. You should actually feel proud and honored. :y:

Kalyx triaD 03-24-2012 11:17 AM

I don't know about greatest co-op but it was pretty cool.

Fignuts 03-24-2012 11:32 AM

This generation, my favorite co-op experience has been New Super Mario Brothers Wii. Though at times we were anything but cooperative. But that was a part of the fun.

Red Dead was another fun one.

Haven't played Portal 2, but I'm sure the co-op in that is a blast. Only drawback would be that after you play through once, there would be little reason to do it again, since you already know the solutions to the puzzles.

Mickey Mania Monday

A bunch of Epic Mickey news was revealed during the weekend with the possibility of the original game heading to the Xbox 360 and PS3, the Wii version of Epic Mickey 2 is the lead platform, and a new Mickey game announced for the 3DS.

In an interview with Game Informer, Warren Spector hinted if he gets Disney's permission, the first Epic Mickey game could be ported over to the Xbox 360 and PS3. It would arrive before the release of Epic Mickey 2 and get people who didn't play the Wii version to be interested in the Epic Mickey series.

Warren Spector also confirms the Wii will be the lead platform for the development of Epic Mickey 2 with the Xbox 360 and PS3 getting upscaled HD versions of the game. Junction Point will work on the Wii version while Blitz Games will handle the HD versions.

Epic Mickey 2 will also have a collectable Nunchuck controller for the Wii version and confirmed to have PS Move support for the PS3 version. The Xbox 360 version will not support Kinect controls.

Finally, Nintendo Power confirms the Nintendo 3DS will be getting an Epic Mickey game titled as "Epic Mickey Power of Illusion" and will be arriving this Fall on the same time as Epic Mickey 2's release.

Less than a year after the massive hacking attack which lead to PSN being rebuilt, Sony announces they have taken down 2 digital PSP games from the PSN network. It was discovered both games were being used to launch hacking attacks on the service.

The games taken down were Hot Shots Tennis and Motorstorm: Arctic Edge with the official reason for the removal due to "stability improvement." The real reason was due to hackers using those games to once again attack the PSN network with the main source involving the exploit the PS Vita has when running in PSP mode which allows homebrew programs to run on the PSN network.

No date was given by Sony when either game would be returning to the PSN Store and servers.

Drakul 03-28-2012 01:20 PM

So, I picked up a few old games from Game and a charity shop the other day for very cheap and I've a couple of questions.

Firstly, Jurrasic Park: Operation Genesis. Got it for the PS2, eager to play it for the first time in years and it wont work. It's a purple disc and I've found that they never work. It seems to be a common thing, judging by what Google brings back.
Any solutions?

I also got Theme Park World (Sim Theme Park in the US) for the PS2 and the disc doesn't work either. I held it up to the light and the disc looks semi-clear. If I hold it up to the light, I can see everything on the other side. Pirate copy? Worn out? Is that why it wont work?

I got Turok Evolution for Xbox and I'm curious how I reload and how I cycle through weapons. The manual says nothing about either.
I can cycle through the tomahawk, bow, techbow & pistol but, when using the "unlock all weapons" cheat, I can't seem to access all weapons so I wondered if there was a menu I could access to see the other weapons.

Finally, I got Rollercoaster Tycoon Deluxe 2 for PC. The games cool but any idea how to start a park from scratch? All I can do is "missions" like taking over an already built park and going for a target profit.
I've read you can start fresh using scenario editor or something. Any other way?
I don't fancy browsing through 300+ items in scenario editor to decide what types of ice cream shop to have,

Kalyx triaD 03-28-2012 01:37 PM

Toruk Evolution is pretty much the worst shooter ever made.

Drakul 03-28-2012 01:39 PM

I've read that on Gamefaqs. I've only played the first level or two but I wouldn't say it was the worst. Sure, it's no Timesplitters 3 or Perfect Dark but "worst" might be harsh. Or does it get really bad later on?

I do dislike the way you have to recollect each gun in each level though.

Still, it was £1.99 in a charity shop that raises money for the British Heart Foundation so it's not a big deal if it's not great.

Fignuts 03-28-2012 01:46 PM

There are waaaaaaay worse shooters out there than Turok: Evolution.

Funky Fly 03-28-2012 02:12 PM

Yeah, that game was just mediocre. Bad shooters don't really even get mentioned anymore since there are so many big name shooters dominating the market. Even good-but-not-great shooters like Singularity and FEAR are not exactly uncommon.

Kalyx triaD 03-28-2012 02:31 PM

It's really bad, on a technical and interface level.

We're talking about the PS2 Turok, not the current gen one.

Evo is horrid, no doubt, but there is still far worse out there.

Emperor Smeat 03-28-2012 07:22 PM

A bunch of PS4 rumors were supposedly leaked with the big ones being a late 2013 release date, codename of "Orbis", and requires a constant internet connection.

The project is rumored to be codenamed "Orbis" which could end up as part of the final name similar to Vita ending up being added as a new name to the Playstation family. It could also hint at continued connectivity between the handheld and the system due to Orbis meaning "Circle of" and Vita meaning "Life" in Latin.

Rumored specs involve AMD providing both the CPU and GPU with GPU a "Southern Islands" brand and the CPU being an x64 processor.

Quote:

The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets. It'll also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p (the PS3 could only safely manage 3D at 720p).
According to unnamed sources, Sony already started to send out development kits during this month's GDC conference with the goal to have the games ready for next year.

Now for the potentially bad news, it appears Sony won't bother at all with backwards compatibility for PS3 games (software or hardware). Also rumored is the next Playstation could be leaning towards not allowing used games to be played similar to rumors of the next Xbox.

Quote:

Here's how our main source says it's currently shaping up: new games for the system will be available one of two ways, either on a Blu-Ray disc or as a PSN download (yes, even full retail titles). If you buy the disc, it must be locked to a single PSN account, after which you can play the game, save the whole thing to your HDD, or peg it as "downloaded" in your account history and be free to download it at a later date.
Another potentially bad piece of news appears to be the demands for a constant internet connection to use the system and used games could be restricted to a trial/demo-like mode or require an "Online Pass" payment just to play the game. The Pass would become a standardized feature and no longer up to publishers to implement.

Anyone that has a Kinect and wants 40G, two props, glasses and a shirt for your Avatar. There is a new social app on the 360 called Voice Studio.

You just have to read out the on screen phrases aloud to help improve the voice recognition of Kinect. You get awards and achievements for doing it.

It takes longer to upload the data than it takes to talk through the phrases, though.

More bad news for THQ as the company announces more layoffs and the rumors of the MMO Warhammer game being cancelled ends up becoming true.

THQ officially confirms the Warhammer 40,000 MMO game called "Dark Millennium" has been cancelled with the main reasoning being THQ unable to find another company to help finance the game. The game was originally meant to play a huge role as a revenue stream for 2013 but now won't be possible and makes THQ's future look a lot bleaker now.

As a result THQ has laid off employees from several studios who were working on the game with 79 employees laid off from Vigil Games and another 39 from Relic Entertainment.

THQ will also downgrade the project from an MMO to just a regular game with the focus on the single player adventure instead of completely scrapping the project. The game will include an online multiplayer but without any of the features the MMO was originally planned to contain.

The news is the second time this year THQ had to lay off and cancel projects with 240 employees previously laid off in February. As well as the CEO of the company taking a 50% pay cut due to the terrible $55 million loss from the third quarter report.

Losing.

Also, new games aren't losing revenue, long term or otherwise.

also, that's delicious, given the state of THQ, who has tried to combat used sales of late. I know they blame EVERYTHING on UDraw and casual games, but they would have had to have manufactured like a billion UDraws to get where they are.

Though it's moot to me. The only THQ series I cared about was SR, and it looks like Volition is douching things up too.

Emperor Smeat 03-29-2012 08:48 PM

The uDraw fiasco could have actually been prevented had THQ not abruptly cut support from the existing uDraw user base on the Wii (1-2 million in size). If they had supplemented the launch with some more Wii uDraw games, they could have recovered some of the losses but instead had nothing for the holiday season.

Kane Knight 03-29-2012 11:15 PM

The titles they did release sold like ass, and they had like 1.5 million units sitting unsold.

I'm not sure this is a better solution you're on.

Why? Only gamers are entitled! Corporations are SUPPOSED to make money! And even though Saints Row the Third was their best-selling, non-licensed title to date doesn't mean they didn't want/need/deserve more money on top of that!

And so what if my code wasn't recognised for like 15 minutes before finally going through, and there were connectivity issues because of that? Punishing the customer for the wrongs perpetuated by pirates and used consumers is totally fair and within their rights! I hope they lock out used games next generation, because I'm fifteen and don't have to worry about money for another three years, and probably even longer!

And if you don't like it, don't buy it!

...Oh.

Sega announces due to recent financial hardships by both them and Sammy (parent company), they are restructuring the entire company with layoffs and game project cancellations in progress.

The main issue is the company itself is bleeding out cash while Sammy is unable to offset the losses due to themselves also having financial problems.

The good news is the situation is not as severe as THQ's ongoing problems and the projects not cancelled are still on track for their release dates.

The Japanese branch of the company will not be affected with the changes only affecting both the US and European branches.

Quote:

“The Consumer Business centred on Sega Corporation is expected to post operating loss in the year ending March 2012, due to the challenging economic climate and significant changes in the home video game software market environment in the U.S. and Europe.”

“Given this circumstance, the companies determined that in order to actualise earnings recovery of the Consumer Business in the following period and after and return to a growth path, it is essential to streamline organisations in the field of home video game software in the U.S. and European markets, while shifting to a structure that corresponds to change in environment, including strengthening development in the field of digital content.”
In terms of actual games, none of the bigger or AAA labeled titles will be affected but the company will cancel a lot of their smaller and "riskier" projects. It also means they will take less risks with newer IPs which is the opposite of what they were doing for most of this generation.

A bunch of rumors for all three upcoming next generation consoles with people thinking the Wii U has less power than the 3DS, the next Xbox to require a constant internet connection, and Sony in a race to be out before Microsoft.

Based on a potentially bogus claim of an upcoming financial report from Rockstar, the Wii U could be having a November 18 release date. Also rumored from another source is the Wii U somehow went backwards in overall power with the system being a lot weaker than the PS3, Xbox 360, and 3DS.

Sony is rumored to be rushing through the final stages of their next Playstation console with the company's goal to prevent Microsoft from having another head start.

Quote:

The consoles specifications were apparently nailed down last year and players will be able to use the PlayStation Vita as a controller.

“Sony is completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” said the source. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”
Microsoft is currently rumored to have their next Xbox contain similar features the next Sony Playstation might have by requiring a constant internet connection in order to use the console. Also rumored are the use of Blu-Ray discs for games and 2 GPUs to help generate a 4-6 core processor system it would use.

Quote:

According to the info, the new Xbox will use the Blu-ray format and carry two GPUs that will act independent of one another. They are reported to be the equivalent to the AMD 7000 series and are described as being ”like two PCs taped together,” the sources claim.

The console will run using four or six CPU cores, one will be dedicated to Kinect – which will be built in – and another will be used for the operating system. Finally the sources claim that the next Xbox will require an always-on Internet connection to run in order to prevent piracy.
Finally, developers are pushing very hard for both Microsoft and Sony to scrap their patch approval process which normally takes 2 weeks on average in order to allow "on the fly" patching for games. The upside is it will allow patches to arrive as fast as they do for PC games but the main downside is no guarantees the companies will not rush out patches that could cause even more problems.

Porn company, Brazzers, to support the Fighting Game Community
Posted on April 02, 2012 by OG http://www.original-gamer.com/og/images/brazzers.png

Joe "LI Joe" Ciaramelli, a fighting game veteran, has been able to bring together the Fighting Game Community and the porn industry in an unprecedented way. In recent months, Joe had stated how he wanted to have Brazzers - a porn production company specializing in online HD video - as his sponsor. Today, in a special stream on his Twitch channel, Joe spoke with Rob Steele, Brazzer's Director of Special Events, and Steele announced that Brazzers will begin supporting the Fighting Game Community and will sponsor LI Joe at events.
While no specifics where given on when and where, it appears that Brazzers will have its own fighting game event as well as possible sponsorships of players. Hopefully we'll hear more in the future from Brazzers regarding their support of the Fighting Game Community as I'm sure many fans of fighting games and porn are incredibly excited for the future.

In a meeting with the Better Business Bureau, Capcom states they see no difference between content which is locked on purpose on the disc and providing the same content in a traditional DLC way.

They feel it actually benefits the consumer more if the content or at least the majority of the content is already on the disc to make future DLC downloads a lot quicker and save space on their hard drives.

Their official statement to the Better Business Bureau:

Quote:

At Capcom, we value our customers and make every effort to resolve customer complaints. We are sorry to hear that [censored] was so disappointed with the Street Fighter x Tekken game (”SFxT”), and would like to respond to his complaints.

SFxT has an enormous amount of content, fully developed and available for play and enjoyment immediately on-disc. Given the 38 characters available for full play, as well as multiple play modes, SFxT provides great value for all players from day one. While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game’s lifecycle. There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being ”locked” behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism.

We hope that this addresses [censored]‘ concerns.
They made no mentions in regards to their pricing policies which also was a major complaint against Capcom for SFxT and other games released by them in recent years.

Harmmonix announces Rock Band Blitz for the PSN and XBLA. Essentially, it's the return of Amplitude/Frequency. Comes with 25 songs, and is compatible with the library of Rock Band songs. I am incredibly psyched for this.

SOCOM holds a special place in my gaming heart. Probably the first game most of us played for our first online console experience.

It went downhill after combined assault. And hasn't gotten any better since. Smart decision to end it.

Kane Knight 04-04-2012 08:55 AM

Did they end it?

ClockShot 04-04-2012 11:23 AM

Zipper got closed down, yes. SOCOM 4 was the last game made. Slant 6 made SOCOM Confrontation, the infamous online only game. And even that wasn't great.

Dunno if the rights are up for sale.

FearedSanctity 04-04-2012 11:33 AM

Wouldn't think they are. If Sony has the ability to close the studio it's safe to assume they also own the rights to the studio's games. Which basically means give it a year or two and there'll be a new SOCOM by a new developer

Emperor Smeat 04-04-2012 06:19 PM

Might be the third time the series has been rebooted but Double Dragon once again will be having a reboot made to the series.

WayForward studios announces they are working on a reboot of Double Dragon and it will be a downloadable title for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. Majecso will be the publisher and is currently helping with the funding of the project.

The game will be called "Double Dragon Neon" and currently has a Summer 2012 release date. Based on screens shown off so far, the visuals create a 1980s Vice City feel to the game.

Quote:

The gameplay evidently doesn't stray too far from the original design, mixing straight-up beat-'em-up combat with weapons-based maneuvers. The plot will once again seeing the perpetually kidnapped Marion kidnapped by yet another thug, whose name is actually Skullmageddon.

I'm not sure how they can have a Smash Bros style game. I had a PS1 & 2 and I'm struggling to think of more than a couple Sony characters. Most of the characters are "normal" characters like Nathan Drake and very few are "whimsical" like Sackboy or that kid from Ape Escape.

So, unless the PS3 has had an explosion of colourful characters that I've never heard of, I'm not sure it'll be able to compete with SB in terms of roster quality and other "fan services".

I'm willing to bet that Sony will try and pass the game off like it's a whole new idea that's never ever been done before. They do that with pretty much everything.

Fignuts 04-05-2012 02:51 AM

Yeah, not to mention sony's characters aren't anywhere near as iconic and endearing as Nintendo's.

Drakul 04-05-2012 03:11 AM

I guess they could have Sir Fortesque from Medieval. If Crash was still exclusive and as big as he used to be, he could have been in it.

They don't really have anything else, though. I can't think of any "landmark" stages they could use or any peices of Music that would be good to hear, like the Crash Bandicoot theme or the Ape Escape theme.

LoDownM 04-05-2012 04:02 AM

Unless they use characters from third party exclusives from all three Playstations, roster is gonna suck.

I'm betting it has a more "adult" tone.

Drakul 04-05-2012 10:16 AM

I remember a rumour on Kotaku saying Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal would be in. So, that should tell us what vibe they're going for.

The appeal of SB was seeing these colourful characters from your childhood all togethor in what would eventually become a sort of "celebration" of Nintendo with nostalgic characters, stages and music.
Sony can go with an adult tone if they want but it wont be able to replicate what Nintendo could do with SB because they don't have the childhood history that Nintendo or a similar company like Disney or SEGA would have. Plus, as we've already said, they don't exactly have a huge list of memorable characters.
The ones I remember and like are the colourful ones. Crash, Spyro, Fortesque, Sackboy and Ape Escape kid. I don't know any others and Crash and Spyro aren't exclusive anymore and Crash is pretty washed up.

I guess Jak and Daxter could be put into the roster.

Drakul 04-05-2012 10:17 AM

Just noticed I misread your post. I thought you said they ARE going for an adult tone. Now I see you're saying you think they might.

During the MIT Business in Gaming conference, the CEO from Take Two, Strauss Zelnick, doesn't believe THQ will last beyond this year with his projection being around 6 months.

He compared THQ's current financial strategy to the one current used by Take Two as a way to explain why THQ was "floundering" while Take Two was more successful this year.

His main argument was in regards to THQ's poor handling with licensed properties stating they had too much money and resources tied into these properties.

If the games improved, the fees would rise during the next time contracts had to be renewed. If those same games bombed in sales, THQ wouldn't be able to recover development costs for those games. Both would lead to less revenue margins in the long run.

Since Take Two barely has any licensed properties, they have less money being spent on non-gaming stuff which in return frees up the money for development of other games.

Quote:

"THQ's strategy was licensed properties, first and foremost. License stuff from other people, whether it's UFC or WWE or a motion picture property, and make a game around that," Zelnick said, noting Take-Two hasn't had the best year either, but it has had a good five-year run. "And our approach, since we took over the company, is 100 percent owned intellectual property."

Zelnick stated licensed properties -- something he has avoided in his career -- leaves publishers at the mercy of license holder. Even if a publisher does a great job on a property, it will have to renegotiate the license in a few years and the margins will decrease because it is being charged more money for a brand it built up in the space. Zelnick noted that THQ did partially change its strategy a few years back regarding owned intellectual strategy, but it's hard to do that overnight.

"Strategy didn't work and the execution was bad. To put it another way: the food was no good and the portions were small." Zelnick closed his comparison of the two companies by saying, "THQ won't be around in six months."
