We knew it was coming... Fox aims to halt WATCHMEN's release...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We don't typically follow legal crap here and we've already made the exception on WATCHMEN because it might affect the release date.

Now Fox's lawyers have officially said they're asking to stop the release. It was always speculation, but they're legally asking for it now and they may get it. The AP article also has a comment from Warners saying they want a trial (set now for January 20th) and don't believe Fox owns the rights they are claiming to and says a settlement isn't an option for them at the moment.

Of course, this could all be political horse manure, posturing by both sides so they can work on a settlement... who knows, but it's the latest bit of information on the case, which now looks to be trying to derail the release. If Warners doesn't budge and Fox keeps its word, we might not be seeing Watchmen come March.

I don't think we're going to cover ever twist and turn this thing takes, but this seemed to be a major revelation to me about Fox's intentions or, at the very least, how much hardball they're preparing to play.

Kalyx triaD 12-30-2008 06:34 PM

Gay.

Lock Jaw 12-30-2008 07:26 PM

Even though I want to see the movie, this whole situation is hilarious to me.

"Great! Watchmen is all done and ready to be relea-"
FOX: "Oh HAI guys!! So... *ahem* we own this here movie..."

Kalyx triaD 01-06-2009 06:01 PM

Solomon Must Be Pissed:

Captain Marvel is no longer happening. The screenwriter posted on his blog that WB wanted something edgier than the happier version of the character he penned (blame TDK). This is why Marvel [Comic Films] are kicking ass right now; they don't make movies according to 'focus groups'. WB better quit this 'darker is better' shit. How in the Hell did they think Captain Marvel would translate to such a tone? Do they even know who Captain Marvel is?

Whatever.

Lock Jaw 01-06-2009 06:09 PM

Yeah. Captain Marvel is like on the opposite scale of dark and gritty. Even further away than Superman, I'd argue.

They'll probably just decide to make a Black Adam film and have it be nothing but Adam ripping people in half for an hour and a half.

Kalyx triaD 01-06-2009 06:17 PM

Well if The Rock's still playing him...

Nowhere Man 01-06-2009 07:42 PM

God, if they keep with this 'make everything dark' bullshit, every DC movie that comes out is just gonna look like Marvel in the 90s. Nothing but gritty anti-heroes covered in pouches and sporting oversized guns and generally sucking all the fun out of the room.

Save the dark depressing stuff for Batman. Keep it the hell away from everyone else.

Lock Jaw 01-06-2009 07:45 PM

Speaking of unnecessary pouches:

Seriously. Captain Marvel is basically Superman meets Harry Potter. "Dark and gritty" is about as appropriate for that as circus clowns at a funeral.

The two litigants in the fight over rights to the Watchmen film, Fox and Warner Bros., have agreed to let a judge decide whether Fox is entitled to an injunction blocking release of the film, instead of going to a jury trial. The hearing is currently schedule to begin on January 20th, unless the judge grants Warners’ request to move the hearing to an earlier date.

In addition to the agreement that the judge can decide the case, the two have agreed that neither will oppose requests to expedite an appeal.

The judge ruled in December that Fox had a copyright interest in the property (see “Watchmen Judge Rules in Fox’s Favor”), although Warners vowed to release the film (see “Warners Vows To Release Watchmen”).

I wonder if anyone in Vegas is taking bets on making the release date.

Kalyx triaD 01-08-2009 10:33 PM

WB Takes A Chill Pill:

According to David Goyer [Writer/Director], WB is pressing pause on all of their DC properties - including Man of Steel and Green Lantern. He says the success of Iron Man and The Dark Knight made them rethink how they handled comic movies.

Essentially, they're just now taking it serious.

Whether they're gonna regroup and restructure their release plans or whatever is not stated.

This is the second we've heard of WB acting in the tune of, "...Wait, people want all of our comic movies to be good?" As I mentioned in the past I think this has everything to do with Marvel Studios film-blitz in the last few years. And the buzz over the Avengers film will be fever pitch very soon. We'll see what this all means by late 2009.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2009 06:57 PM

He's Still Chasing Cars:

There's some rumor going around that WB execs were riffing the possibility of Joker's return in Batman 3, at least in cameo like fashion. There's little more to this one, although it would make sense to have the character factor into what [I think] Nolan is going for with this trilogy.

Smallville 9?:

Smallville may well get another season. Can't imagine why they don't call it "Metropolis" at this point but hey, it's chugging along. If WB does end the show the writers already have a finale in mind, but since these very writers managed to re-energize the show, perhaps this won't be The Death of Superman after all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Fox and Warner Bros. are “close” to reaching a settlement in their dispute over rights to Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie that will allow Warners to release the film as planned on March 6th. Lawyers for Fox and Warners met Monday in the chambers of Federal Judge Gary Feess. Warner Bros., which has already spent at least $150 million to produce the Watchmen movie, has evidently dropped its request that Judge Feess move up the January 20th injunction hearing (see “Judge to Decide Watchmen’s Fate”).

One very positive sign occurred over the weekend as Warner Bros. rolled out a wave of TV ads for the movie with numerous spots on key cable networks and, somewhat ironically, on the Fox network’s popular 24 series. According to the Reporter sources familiar with negotiations are indicating that the two sides are very close to a settlement in the dispute, which arose out various turnaround agreements that were negotiated as the Watchmen property bounced from studio to studios (see “Watchmen Still in Judicial Limbo”).

I love how they're apparently dead-set on incorporating every single aspect of the Superman comics except for the suit and the name. And then usually ruining it.

The high-stakes dispute over the rights to the Watchmen film has been settled, with the parties planning to present their settlement to the judge and request a dismissal on Friday. Although terms of the settlement will not be disclosed, Fox will not be involved with distribution of the Warner Bros. film, and will have no rights in the property going forward, according to the report. Instead, Warners will pay cash up front plus a percentage of box office revenue. .

Warner Bros. is reported to be seeking the cost of the settlement from producer Larry Gordon and/or his attorneys, who failed to disclose Fox’s interest in the film when the rights were transferred to Warners (see “Watchmen Judge Rules in Fox’s Favor”).

A settlement will allow the film to be released on schedule on March 6, continuing the momentum behind the sale of the Watchmen graphic novel and other merchandise, which are blistering hot.

Eh, I'm too much of a purist to get into their take on it. Plus, I just really don't like Tom Welling.

Kalyx triaD 01-17-2009 04:35 PM

Give Tom a break, it was Clark Kent or being a Power Ranger.

parkmania 01-17-2009 07:48 PM

Well, except for the original Mighty Morphin Rangers, they've all only lasted one season, so Tom made the smart choice of at least having a CHANCE at multiple seasons. Even if he WILL be typecast unless he can pull a Jim Carrey-esque out of the box role.

Random Smallville Promo Shot, Mini-Blog:

http://tvmedia.ign.com/tv/image/arti...0020614558.jpg

First of all, Erica Durance is the hottest Lois Lane ever. Secondly, can we just call Smallville's Season 9 Metropolis now? For God's sake Clark and Lois are working in the Daily Planet already. Jimmy's there, and Chloe's a more than worthy addition to the Superman mythos. How much of the show even takes place in Smallville anymore? At this point the show is more a recreation of The Adventures of Lois and Clark. I haven't been watching myself, I rather catch up via major DVD marathons, but I kept up with general stuff. How about the Legion, huh? One reviewer compared Smallville to a Justice League Unlimited with all the characters popping up (except Bruce and Diana... dammit).

Well I think a name change to Metropolis will breathe new life into the show, especially with the great job the new creative team's been doing. And who knows, if it is repackaged as Metropolis maybe we could ekk one or two seasons of that before a certain major life decision is made on camera... I mean, he can't be called the Blue Blur for long, right?

Viva La Smallville!

Kalyx triaD 01-26-2009 03:40 AM

Batman 3 in 2011?:

TDK's producer says he expects a new Batman film in 2011. He also hints at knowing about the new villains and a possible love interest without spilling the beans. Of course, 'executive talk' like this are usually hyper positive and we'll know nothing for sure until Nolan himself (or his bro Jonah) give sign that a plot was developed.

To me it's sounding like WB is trying to force a third movie with these little hints and half-news. If Nolan is still on vacation than he's on vacation, no need to rush something/anything just because somebody is bothering you over it. I'd just say, "Listen, I heard about all the buzz and I find the rumors and casting suggestions interesting but there is nothing concrete at the moment." Simple. My guess is we'll start hearing shit with weight to it next Fall or maybe even as early as Summer when the Superhero movie gloves come off from multiple studios vying for our geekly attention.

Later.

Lock Jaw 02-25-2009 08:40 PM

Green Lantern has been given a release date of December 17th, 2010. For what that's worth.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2009 08:52 PM

Forgot to mention that. Can't wait to see the production.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2009 08:56 PM

Super News:

Smallville got greenlit for a ninth season (call it Metropolis, already!).

Man of Steel, the sequel to Superman Returns, has been given the project name "Superman Unleashed". Whether that's merely a hint at production tone or story is up in the air.

Blitz 02-25-2009 09:14 PM

I believe the Jonah Hex movie was also given a date of August 6, 2010.

Jeritron 02-25-2009 10:04 PM

I hope they do that Mark Millar Superman Trilogy. Scrap the current franchise and start from scratch. It sounds awesome and we'd see all the characters and avenues explored right from the getgo. We'd get a new, more badass Lex, a stronger Superman origin story, serious character development with everyone, and for the love of god, some formadible villians.
I want to see involvement from other baddies besides Lex. The military too.

If they go the trilogy route from step one they could do some awesome stuff, like origins and his "death".

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2009 10:13 PM

Superman could really be the 'central force' in WB/DC's film plans. If they wanna be serious about crossovers and such.

Superman is all sorts of epic if they stop bumbling around and put Routh and a good director to work.

Boondock Saint 02-26-2009 02:24 AM

I never want to see or read another Superman origin story ever again.

Nowhere Man 02-26-2009 02:46 AM

Agreed. The origin's been done to death. I would love to see them incorporate some of the more interesting villains from Superman's gallery instead of just Lex and Zod. Hell, even a Lex with more interesting ideas would be fun (like the one from All-Star Superman or Lex Luthor:Man of Steel) Just no more goddamn real-estate scams.

Jeritron 02-26-2009 04:02 AM

They need to involve Doomsday and the Superman death angle in the series somehow. I've seen enough of him flying around saving people, and foiling Lex's real estate scams.
They need to up the ante. People want to see Superman's powers put to use and taken to the limit in action. Fighting.

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2009 12:17 PM

What we need is white-collar criminal Lex, Kevin Spacey would eat that up. And at the same time, splice in some of that mad scientist Lex so Superman winds up fighting something Lex creates. Not Nuclear Man, though. Although I actually like Nuke Man, and wish he would get into comics. Anyway...

We're all pretty clear in that an origin story isn't needed, Lex needs to be dangerous, and Superman needs to punch something that won't die on impact. I think a suitable story could be forged out of the ending of Superman Returns. And it could involve little 'Superboy' even.

Reavant 02-26-2009 01:00 PM

They should have dark seid or doomsday in it

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2009 01:12 PM

Darkseid would bring allusions to greater things at work, something WB isn't ready to produce. Doomsday would be cool, and Braniac would be relevant.

Reavant 02-26-2009 01:12 PM

Wouldnt Doomsday bring allusions too then?

Lock Jaw 02-26-2009 01:30 PM

It's been announced that they are going to be making a Suicide Squad movie. Could be awesome.

But its being written by the guy who decided to make a Green Arrow movie called "Supermax", so it could also be bad.

Boondock Saint 02-26-2009 01:39 PM

I thought Supermax sounded pretty cool actually.

Lock Jaw 02-26-2009 02:04 PM

Vastardikai 02-26-2009 03:20 PM

Come on, Marvel has a monopoly on the 'Supervillain as a cloud" gimmick.

Darkseid is gonna be a tree.

DaveBrawl 02-26-2009 03:25 PM

Mongol as a villain for Superman would be pretty cool.

Just update the story where he uses the plant creature to hypnotize superman and make him think he's in a dream world would make a great movie. You would have to find a way to do it without Batman, Robin & Wonder Woman but I think that could make a great movie.

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2009 03:30 PM

Nixing Batman, Robin, and Diana from "For The Man Who Has Everything" would be a fairly easy task. Now what do you do about the riots anti-adaptation freaks will ensue?

DaveBrawl 02-26-2009 03:36 PM

Show them Superman Returns. They will either realize this story isn't so bad, or run in fear and forget why they were rioting.

Well in some storylines the league helped fend off doomsday too not just superman which is what I assumed you had a problem with dark seid

Kalyx triaD 02-26-2009 04:46 PM

Oh it wasn't that. We can do Doomsday without the JLA. In fact, Doomsday could be used as plot device to usher in the JLA to movies. I mean, what would make Superman suddenly think of bringing together a team of heroes? What would inspire Batman, GL, Wonder Woman to come together? His near death would do it.

Kalyx triaD 02-28-2009 10:21 AM

Green Pastures Ahead:

With Wonder Woman rolling out, DC Animated next DVD feature is none other than an origin story for the Green Lantern! Bruce Timm says it's coincidence that the live-action film is picking up just as the next animated film is revealed. The DC Animated series has delivered Superman, Batman, JLA, and Wonder Woman features so far (though you can argue the Batman anime 'culture project' and the New Frontier adaptation doesn't count).

I'm noticing a trend, it seems Bruce and his team are making movies that elaborate on elements that were scarcely presented during their DCAU run. We got a proper Doomsday battle, a full Wonder Woman origin, and now a GL story. It's a shame these universes aren't connected.

Nowhere Man 03-03-2009 12:24 AM

By the way, the Wonder Woman movie is surprisingly pretty awesome. Not as great as New Frontier was, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Kalyx triaD 03-03-2009 12:30 AM

With the late Micheal Turner's past relationship with DC, this nice piece of news lands here. RIP Turner, I'll miss your petite babes.

Fathom Comes to Screen:

The Fathom comic book, created by the late Michael Turner, follows the story of Aspen, a member of an aquatic race of humans called the Blue, discovering her heritage and the power to control water after being raised by normal, land-based human beings. Mechner is penning the script, making this his second stab at screen writing a major feature film, with the upcoming live-action Prince of Persia film being his first, along with a couple of documentary credits. It should be relatively easy for him though, seeing as he has a wealth of comic book material to draw reference from.

Perhaps even more exciting that Mechner's writing is the fact that Transformers co-star Megan Fox has been tagged to play Aspen. I don't normally rawr, but in this case...rawr.

Nice. This could be a big break for Megan.

EDIT:

Megan Fox is also slated to appear in the Jonah Hex movie, as the scarred hero's love interest.

Kalyx triaD 03-10-2009 08:16 PM

Green Lantern's Tone?:

Producer Donald De Line: "It's going to be a series of big stakes and big action, but it absolutely has a sense of humor," he replied when asked about the humor quotient of the movie. "I think people accept real life, even with really serious situations, with humor as part of that situation, as we experience in life, you have to have that. That's how people cope, so they've done it so well in these other movies. I think that people are absolutely ready. It doesn't have to fall on one side of the fence vs. the other."

The entire context of this convo isn't revealed so I'm only guessing that the last line is some sort of allusion to The Dark Knight's depressingly dark tone. Other than that it's good to see they're taking GL to the 'feel good' range, unlike those ridiculous chats WB has had over Superman's tone.

Kalyx triaD 03-14-2009 11:16 PM

Every once and a while news comes around that makes my day. I'm talking news so good you have to ask the source if they're bullshitting you just so you don't fall from your nerd-high. The last news that I wrote with a geek-trip smile on my face was Sam Jackson's return as Nick Fury in a bunch of Marvel films. This piece of news gets me just as giddy.

"Batman/Superman: Public Enemies" Gets Animated Film:

DC's consistently strong slate of animated movies will deliver an adaptation of Batman/Superman's first arc, "Public Enemies", which is one of my favorite comics of all time (seriously). It's relatively recent as far as great comics go (regarding the warrented belief that all the best 'hero books' came out years ago), but it is a great read. I have read it front to back on several occasions and bought it up on this forum when I spoke about a possible Batman/Superman movie.

Pick it up, it's good fun - that is if you can stand Leob's overuse of thought boxes and Ed's quasi anime partially deformed art style. And yet, both of those elements make the book great fun. Currently, the Batman/Superman series is shit, but the first arc is well worth an animated feature. I am stoked for it.

And hooray for DC Animated for moving at a pace WB can only dream of. Perhaps Bruce Timm and his team should be running the live action side of things.

How about a fucking Preacher trilogy? The Bible Belt would be up in arms, which would create a massive hype machine.

They need to get with it, and stop worrying about focus group and shit. That's not how you make movies, dammit!

Yet Another Loser:

Oscar Jaenada (The Limits of Control, Che: Part Two) has landed the role of Cougar in Warner Bros. Pictures' adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comic book The Losers.

He's joining a cast that includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the leader Clay, Idris Elba is his second-in-command Roque, Chris Evans as Jensen, Columbus Short as Pooch, Jason Patric as Max and Zoe Saldana as Aisha.

Sylvain White is directing the movie about a band of black ops commandos who are set up to be killed by their own government. They barely survive and set out to get even.

Also, I've seen some rather... wacky misconceptions online. I just wanna say that The Losers is not Sly Stallone's action project (also about outcast soldiers). Just wanted to say.

Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly have their respective voices. I am good with this.

Got raped within the DCU proper.

I have high hopes for this.

Just read the comic book story because I never read it before and heard it was good. It was average. Mayhaps in movie form it will be better. I can see the potential.

Superman Has Options:

Brandon Routh's Superman contract has expired (way to drag your feet WB), but simply means WB doesn't have to use him in Superman movies and he doesn't have to return. Past news show that he's pretty much still 'in the boots', unless something goes wrong on the studio side.

Lock Jaw 07-05-2009 09:07 PM

Are they even working on another Superman movie?

Kalyx triaD 07-05-2009 09:09 PM

They'll say yes, I think no. I think they're sitting on their ass waiting for some fucking... 'sign' that a Superman movie will make them the most money or some shit like that. To be honest we should be hearing about Superman 3 plans by now, with 'Returns 2 coming out on DVD already. But they're sitting chilling, butthurt that Superman Returns didn't net them enough to buy a small island (even though it fucking did). So no, they're not in the process.

McLegend 07-05-2009 09:23 PM

Superman Returns is on FX like every weekend, and Brandon Routh is the best thing in that movie. So I hope he comes back.

Also Bruce Timm and company should do The Killing Joke. I don't care if it doesn't fit in with their continuity. They should just do it, because it would probably be good.

I'm just sayin.
