The boss of Ubisoft Toronto, Jade Raymond, announces the company is set to unveil the studio's first project which has been labeled as a "Triple A" title.

It appears the game will most likely be a new Splinter Cell game and not a brand new IP or series based on what was hinted in the announcement.

Quote:

“We are about to announce our first big triple-A being developed by the studio,” she told CVG. “I’ve got to say I think it’s going better than I could’ve imagined. I’m really amazed at the team we’ve put together and what we’ve been able to accomplish and I think Ubisoft is pretty excited too. Soon we’ll find out what everyone else thinks!”

Back in 2010, the studio announced it was working on its first title, an installment in the “Splinter Cell” franchise, which Raymond confirms the studio is ”100% focused” on. Furthermore, Raymond denies any involvement with a new IP at this time, saying, “We’re not actually working on a big new IP yet within the studio. It’s one of the mandates, and we’re definitely starting up some things in that direction, but we’re not working on a big new IP yet. Right now we’re 100% focused on Splinter Cell.”
Ubisoft created the Toronto studio in 2009 and promoted the producer of the Assassin's Creed series as the boss for the studio. While the studio's is currently helping out Ubisoft Montreal with the new Rainbow Six game, this "Triple A" project would be the first full title they are developing on their own.

You mean they're not Capcpom?

Captain of Fun 03-10-2012 02:38 AM

I hope they keep the Conviction style gameplay for the new Splinter Cell. I know some hardcore fans didn't like it, because it was more mainstream gameplay (i.e. dumbed down), but I thought it was a lot of fun. Must have spent hours playing through deniable ops missions. It's just one of those games that made you feel like a total badass.

One thing I would change, is that enemies need to get a little nervous when you start taking out their comrades. It's kind of silly when an enemy is yelling out that sam is a pussy and going to die, when a dozen of his friends are lying dead around him. It was even more noticable since I played it right after Arkham Asylum which actually does have enemies who get scared.

Crytek to announce 'spectacular' console/PC project in April

'It's the best of this kind of project we've ever done,' teases Crysis dev

Crysis dev Crytek is set to announce a "spectacular" console/PC game next month, the studio's told CVG.

Speaking in a GDC interview last week, Crytek's GM of games, Nick Button-Brown teased that the soon-to-be-announced game will be unveiled in April and is "the best of that kind of project we've ever done."

The confession came after the developer decided to focus on free-to-play and its first mobile game at the San Francisco event.

"There are so many things I can't talk about," Button-Brown told CVG, stressing that the studio's still dedicated to triple-A development.

"A big part of our business is big budget console and PC games. We are doing all these other things, but they're on top of that and we're doing them because they're interesting.

"We still want to deliver the highest quality that we can, wherever we go," he added. "You know about Homefront, you know about Ryse. We are working on another project... [laughs] all three of which are looking really good."

Pressed for more detail, the games GM continued: "The other project looks absolutely fantastic - I mean, genuinely the best of that kind of project we've ever done.

"It looks spectacular, the team are doing really, really well and it's just really nice to see the team really enthusiastic about what they're doing. They're really happy.

"We're going to carry on doing those games. We like doing mobile games, we like doing free-to-play, but we also like blowing things up in a visually stunning style."

Last month an EA job ad confirmed it's working on a new title with Crytek, following its role as publisher of the first two Crysis games.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com...VG-General-RSS

So, any speculations?

I'm hearing people speculate that it could be the long awaited TimeSplitters 4, but I don't think Crytek would hype up a TimeSplitters game like that. Keeping it a secret and claiming that it's the "best kind of project they've ever done", but I'm hoping I'm wrong with that.

I've been waiting on TimeSplitters 4 for years now.

The Rogerer 03-12-2012 04:44 PM

It won't be TimeSplitters 4

#BROKEN Hasney 03-12-2012 04:49 PM

Meaning it won't blow people away when they announce it. You think TS4 and almost anything is a step down from that.

Cool King 03-12-2012 05:16 PM

Yeah, I won't be surprised if it's some kind of COD style FPS war game. I'm sort of expecting it to be anyway.

If it is something like that, it'll just be a massive disappointment to me. :-\

LoDownM 03-12-2012 05:35 PM

If it's Crysis 3 or Timesplitters 4, I'll be happy.

Microsoft announces small changes are on its way in regards to Gamerscores as Xbox Live Arcade titles will be getting an increase from the standard 200 points possible to now a 400 points possible per arcade title.

No changes are expected to be done to retail games which will keep the 1000 points as a max and to DLC games which will still keep their own points and kept together with their retail counter-part.

Quote:

Starting next month (April 2012) all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games will have the option to increase from 200 to 400 Gamerscore points, with the addition of up to 30 Achievements. Even better, this Gamerscore increase will be required in all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games starting in June 2012.
It is very unlikely the new changes will carry over to older titles but have been confirmed to be the new standard for all XBLA titles after March.

The move is being done to please Gamerscore chasers who have felt either arcade titles provided way too few points or kept demanding for more increases.

According to Ono, the two part set for the Versus series involving Street Fighter and Tekken will be taking a lot longer than originally expected.

Either Capcom was assuming the entire set would be finished by a certain date or at least assumed Namco's turn with Tekken X Street Fighter would take about the same amount of time Capcom needed for SFxT.

Instead the project might have added more years from its original estimate based on Ono's request for a status report from Namco which contained absolutely nothing. It was later revealed Namco did not have any basic design documents nor any idea of how they want their version of the game to be made.

Quote:

There’s a reason for this. Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono told GamesMaster in its April issue that Namco Bandai is “way behind schedule” on the project. Actually, the company has yet to make “a single design document”.

“It might take a really long time to come out because they haven’t made a single design document yet, so they’re way behind schedule. But we definitely trust them, so whenever that game gets out the door we think they’ll have a really good thing.

“Just to reiterate that point, they really haven’t made any progress on the game at all. It might be 2018 before the game comes out for all we know, and in the mean time, we want people to enjoy Street Fighter X Tekken. Hopefully we can make it past the Mayan end-of-the-world apocalypse at the end of 2012 and then maybe they can get around to making the game.”
While Capcom was aware of no details regarding Namco's project and knew Namco wanted to wait until after SFxT was released, Ono's request for a status report was the first time Capcom wanted any real details regarding Namco's project.

The current CEO of Epic Games and creator of the first Unreal Engine, Tim Sweeney, hints or implies there might be one last major console generation before the mobile market claims dominance over the video game industry.

He implied the console market has around 6-8 more years left of its dominance or around 1-2 more generations of consoles before mobile devices can both match and surpass anything capable on a console.

Quote:

The big difference between a console and a tablet is the console can consume 100 or 200 watts of power, while the tablet consumes one or two or three or four watts. That's really the limiting factor of performance there. Just on the grounds of the laws of physics, you'd have to think it is three to four hardware generations, or six to eight years before the current highest end desktop or console performance you can achieve becomes achievable on tablets. To me, that really defines the role of consoles in the world. They define the highest and most impressive graphics experience anywhere in the industry. They focus on delivering teraflops of computing performance in a way that a portable device or an economical computer really couldn't, despite sheer focus on that one aspect.
He feels the future of the industry might be following Apple's way once the mobile market claims dominance. This would mean a lot more quicker advancements and "generations" replacing the slower life cycles of consoles.

Quote:

Apple is by far the leading phone provider in terms of profits or any other objective measure of how well they are doing. A company in that position could just rest on their laurels and keep making more and more profit from each new phone. Apple doesn't take that approach. Rather, they push the technology forward as fast, or faster than possible to go from lower resolution displays.
He also feels web browsers in devices will become a new standard in gaming and touted how even the Unreal Engine 3 was able to be modified to work on current web browsers.

After months of phishing attacks on the Xbox 360 involving FIFA 12's Ultimate Team mode, EA finally releases a patch to fix the problem on their side of the attacks.

The fixes are part of a larger patch which will update and fix in other bugs of the game.

Logging in to Ultimate Team mode now requires a security question to be answered if its being accessed from a different console or once every 30 days if accessed from a web browser.

Users can now also lock their accounts anytime they want to prevent unwanted access when they are not playing the game as well.

Microsoft has been patching their side of the issue since the release of FIFA 12 but this will be the first time EA has actually done something to combat the problem. Previously EA stated their game wasn't responsible for the problems nor had any fixes besides asking people to be more careful with their credit accounts.

Bethesda rumored to be making an MMO style Elder Scrolls game and could have been a key reason behind the lawsuit against Mojang's game called Scrolls.

The game is set as a prequel to the series and is expected to be called Elder Scrolls Online.

In terms of storyline, it will occur during the "Second Era" or roughly hundreds of years before the earliest game in the series and about a millennium before Skyrim. There will also be three playable factions with each faction represented by an animal (lion, dragon, bird of prey).

The game is set to arrive this May although no other details were given.

Also, some guy has lodged an official complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission because he didn't like the ending of Mass Effect 3.

Between going that far over a games ending and everyone crying over DLC in ME3 and SFxT, I'm starting to go off my fellow gamers.

The way I see on-disc DLC, they keep the price of the game at a reasonable level while everything else in life is increasing in price.

By selling the game for £40/$60, the game is at a managable price but, with production (and life in general) getting more expensive, this is less of a profit, realitively speaking.
So, rather than hiking up the price of the game instore and damaging sales, they keep it at a price we will accept.
The DLC then lets them make an actual profit in a way that's optional and more managable because it's spread out of a few months.

If the alternative to locked on-disc DLC was paying an extra £30/40 or an extra $40/50 for every single thing unlocked, would people prefer that?
As I see it, that's the legal* options. £40/$60 for the game and a few extra £/$ for locked DLC every other week or £80/$100 instore for everything included.

*specifically put in the word "legal" so Hasney wouldn't suggest his prefered method, which is besides the point.

I mentioned this in the ME thread. It's not just because he didn't like the ending, but because he feels that Bioware's claims on what the endign would be constitutes false advertising. They did promote a product wholly different from the end result. That kind of fits the bill.

Seriously, though, not everything rises in price. A lot do, but so what? They don't need to subsidise the costs with DLC. Have you seen how much more money they made in 2011 than 2010? Have yuo seentheir projections for 2012? The games industry as a whole is gonna like double over the course of three years!

Quote:

So, rather than hiking up the price of the game instore and damaging sales, they keep it at a price we will accept.
At least, temporarily.

Quote:

The DLC then lets them make an actual profit in a way that's optional and more managable because it's spread out of a few months.
Ignoring the fact that most of the on-disc DLC is sold as day 1, then yes, it's spread out over months.

Quote:

If the alternative to locked on-disc DLC was paying an extra £30/40 or an extra $40/50 for every single thing unlocked, would people prefer that?
As I see it, that's the legal* options. £40/$60 for the game and a few extra £/$ for locked DLC every other week or £80/$100 instore for everything included.
Keeping in mind these are not the two options, because the market would not stand for one of them.

Honestly, if they're going to hit us with 40 bucks of DLC, something they would NEVER charge us for on-disc if they were being transparent, they should lower the initial price point. Otherwise, they've been making BILLIONS, so the argument that they need to do this to keep up is just plain false.

Also, why don't games like Skyrim need to do it? There's hundreds of hours of content on those games, with fewer iterations in between. Why aren't companies like Bethesda and Obsidian in the toilet? Rockstar? C'mon, man, it doesn't pass the smell test.

But yeah, it really pisses me off when consumers go to consumer advocacy groups or want things at a reasonable price like consumers. Why can't they just be wallets with legs?

Wanting honesty, transparency, and fairness are so selfish. y u so intitld, gamurz?

Hate Angry Joe, but seriously, the quotes at the beginning of the video are great for demonstrating why people have an issue with the ending.

In a discussion concerning the Dragon Age series, Bioware revealed their plans for the future along with the news of an unannounced Dragon Age II expansion pack ending up becoming cancelled.

Mark Darrah from Bioware mentioned future games in the series will focus a lot based on the results gained from both fan opinions and feedback from the first two games. Besides the official forums and social media sites, Bioware will also have its first public forum for future games starting at PAX East next month.

Quote:

“You’ve most certainly heard the rumors floating around, and unfortunately I can’t really comment on them. However, what I can say is that we’ve been thinking a lot about Dragon Age – what it means, and where it could go. This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time both going back to the ‘BioWare vault’ of games and re-examining them, and looking at some new possibilities that today’s industry allows.

“With that, the next thing for the Dragon Age team members and I to do is hear from you, and not just on the forums, or Facebook, or Twitter. We’ll be attending a number of conventions and gatherings, including PAX East in April. The most valuable thing we can get out of those meetings is to hear from you on those same topics – what does Dragon Age mean to you, and where would you like to see it go? We’re excited to hear what you have to say!”
Originally there were plans for an expansion DLC pack for Dragon Age II called "Exalted March" which would have ended Hawke's storyline from the main game. The project was eventually cancelled by EA and Bioware in favor of working on Mass Effect 3 and other projects at the time.

The DLC pack wouldn't have Hawke as a playable character but Bioware still has plans in the future to end his story although most likely now as part of a potential Dragon Age III game.

Especially bad since they said that EA passes would support servers.

Did you see the suggestion from EA's CEO about charging for bullets?

Kane Knight 03-20-2012 06:35 PM

Oh crap, this is impacting single player content, too. Apparently, the Saboteur will be impacted. Though I think the only thing that came with that was a patch so you could see bewbs, so I won't miss that. But that means in the future, we could see other similar shutdowns.

Congress is considering a bill that would potentially treat video games similar to tobacco and alcohol products.

The bill is aimed at adding warning labels to all ESRB-rated game and was written by Joe Baca, D-California, who has been pushing the idea around since 2009. The original 2009 and 2011 versions only targeted games rated higher than "E" but the 2012 expands to include all games regardless of its rating.

The warnings would not actually detail what questionable content is in a particular game like the ESRB does but would be pushed as an actual health warning label.

Quote:

If he was a predictable legislator, he would be doing this again in 2013, but California Democrat Joe Baca has thrown us a curveball. Yesterday, he introduced the newest version of his "Violence in Video Games Labeling Act."

He wants this label..."WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior."... on every video game.
His official reasoning for the new attempt this year is due to him believing the industry has failed to curb the growth of violent games and only using research that states violent video games promote violent behavior.

Quote:

"The video game industry has a responsibility to parents, families, and to consumers – to inform them of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products," said Rep. Baca. "They have repeatedly failed to live up to this responsibility. Meanwhile research continues to show that playing violent video games is a casual risk factor for a host of detrimental effects in both the short- and long-term, including increasing the likelihood of physically aggressive behavior. American families deserve to know the truth about these potentially dangerous products."
The current bill is labeled H.R. 4204 and was issued yesterday in the House of Representatives.

Just gonna throw this in here since pretty much everyone reads this thread anyway.

Since the last dash update ruined my 360s disc drive, my dad loaned me his 360. Thing is, his is flashed or modded or whatever. I don't know for sure and neither does he since he just bought it off Craigslist a few years ago for the hell of it. Things were fine for a while but now attempting to play any games that have come out since around October 2011 causes the system to hit me with the "system must be updated" box or whatever. I would just update and hope for the best, but given this isn't my Xbox I'm not about to fuck anything up. Now I don't take this 360 online so I'm not worried about getting flagged or anything, I just wanted to know if I could safely use the system update on recent games like ME3 without any ill effects on the 360s ability to play games offline? Any help would be appreciated

Kalyx triaD 03-21-2012 03:43 PM

I'm not too sure but I wouldn't do it.

FearedSanctity 03-21-2012 03:46 PM

Yeah I've been putting it off because I didn't think it'd take me this long to get my 360 fixed. Started doing it with WWE 12 a few months ago so I just shelved the game, but now I REALLY wanna play ME3 so I'm trying to get it figured out asap

#BROKEN Hasney 03-21-2012 03:56 PM

Update is fine, but it might flash the box back to stock and not play modded games anymore.

For the newer games, you'd have to re-nod it with LT 3.0 anyway and some newer games need a specific DVD burner in your PC to work. The flashing of TE XBox to a modded state is easy, getting working discs of newer games is difficult as hell now.

Emperor Smeat 03-21-2012 04:02 PM

Even though you don't play the games offline, I think if you try to download the game patches or updates, it can still send out a flag to Microsoft.

I think them and Nintendo include system checkers in the updates who's purpose is to remove the hacked firmware (or at least I know Nintendo does). No clue on what Sony includes with their weekly updates.

Don't think I'm too worried about it flashing back to stock as my dad doesn't ever use it anyway. Just not trying to brick what isn't mine. Out of curiosity though, if it does flash back to stock, would it be able to go online? Or is that still something to avoid?

#BROKEN Hasney 03-21-2012 04:10 PM

You'd be flagged, but to be completely honest with you all that does is ban that specific 360 from Live. Your account, if you have one, will be fine.

Awesome, thanks man

I thought they just console banned, like with hardware mods. And like Hasney said.

Sony is still pretty convinced their system is unhackable. Not sure what they do.

Warren Spector reveals new details about the upcoming Epic Mickey 2 with drop-in/out co-op and a lot more musical parts to be included.

In regards to camera issues that plagued the first game, Spector explained this was a top priority for the sequel with the largest team assigned for improving the camera controls.

The game will allow drop-in/out co-out with the second player controlling Oswald and the CPU taking control when a player drops out of the game.

Voice acting will be a new feature with both Mickey and Oswald to be fully voiced in the game and a historic first for Oswald who never had a voice in his cartoons.

The voice acting will be tied into random musicals encountered in the game which was also revealed as a new feature.

Quote:

"I'm such a geek about musicals," said Spector at the recent Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award. "I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it's magic."
The game will be titled as Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two and is still on track for a release on the Wii, PS3. and Xbox 360.

According to Capcom, the survival horror genre is no longer strong enough to stand on its own for both the future of the Resident Evil series and the gaming industry as a whole.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Masachika Kawata, the executive producer for Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS, says the market for the creepy and slower paced games no longer sells well enough in North America with concerns of the genre beginning to reach niche status. His main reasoning involved comparing the sales of recent horror and horror-like games with the higher selling quick-paced shooters that currently dominate the market.

Quote:

Each Resident Evil game since Resident Evil 4 has been moving more toward action, Kawata said, and the series should continue to do so:

Especially for the North American market, I think the series needs to head in that [action-oriented] direction. [Resident Evil's primary games] need to be an extension of the changes made in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.

RE4 started in that direction, and RE5 kept going in that direction. And I think that especially for the North American market, we need to keep going in that direction, and take that a step further. And that's exactly one of the reasons that Revelations is the way it is.
He did mention that the Resident Evil series won't completely ditch its horror roots but instead will now be considered as an additional gameplay feature instead of the main focus with older RE games. Resident Evil Revelations and Operation Racoon City are being used to test out this new mesh in gameplay styles.
