Yeah, that they’re making a big deal over such small numbers is pretty funny. This is the sort of reactionary stuff Vince Russo used to do. No effort to understand why things happen the way they do, or what they actually mean.

So, a million people noticed the Bucks vs. Butcher and Blade were wrestling, took 5 minutes to realize it was fucking stupid, and changed the channel? Good on them, I guess. I would have been more impressed if they kept them.

Yeah, people never think about what the numbers actually mean. Doesn’t occur to people that the people tuning in for The Young Bucks match were AEW fans + people laughing at the silly wrestling. That’s why they didn’t stick around.

Same 1.5 million people watching each week, although sometimes that number has been dipping.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised both ratings held up so well.

I've also heard this theory that most wrestling fans don't watch sports.

Yeah, the wrestling/real sports gap is probably wider than it’s ever been.

But it's been like this forever. I've only heard people like Bix and Kris Zellner say this so I have no actual proof but it does make sense.

Look at the neckbeards in the audience -- of course they don't watch sports.

Yeah, sports hasn't had a drastic effect on WWE for ages. I don't know how you can really compare the two in today's day and age. I can't imagine people being torn between their NFL and New Day comedy segment, let alone their NFL and Orange Cassidy arsing around.

Hahaha, the combined viewership of this "hot" night for wrestling managed to be hour three of the fucking drudge that is Monday Night Raw. That says something about how irrelevant this all is.

The taped shows with the extremely sweetened crowd noise seem to have a big effect on the ratings... Seems to be a pattern the past few weeks where the taped shows do significantly better than the live ones with the really quiet crowd... They need to figure that out... shouldn't be too hard to add live "sweetening"... really has a huge effect on how lively the show feels

Possibly the biggest news in ratings this week -

When you combine AEW and NXT they are only 60k viewers lower than RAW.

AEW beat Raw in people 18-34, 0.29 to 0.28

I don't like the combining thing because there is a big overlap with people that watch both shows, so it's like counting them twice... I assume that's how it works at least

I thought 1.4 million when they started was alright. I don't think I would praise it, per se. I don't think it would be as embarrassing for wrestling. Right now they are within spitting distance of WWE hours six and seven. If WWE is so bad (and it is), then I don't see a reason that AEW shouldn't be doing numbers comparable to a SmackDown when it was on the USA Network.

They have the stars (they should have more, but they goofed themselves out of that), they have the platform and with a billionaire's backing and that platform, there is no reason they couldn't have a comparable immediate promotional reach. If two new shows debuted on USA and TNT next week, they're in about the same amount of homes. There's no reason to assume that one has a distinct advantage over the other. WWE has overall product awareness, but so many people I know still call it the WWF and don't know it still exists. I think the "WWE has been around for ages so it's obviously going to be more popular" angle is bullshit.

So about 2 million people for a wrestling product with Chris Jericho, JR and Jon Moxley that isn't WWE and is apparently good. Yeah, I might be tough on that. But given the apparent buys of the first Double or Nothing, 1.4 million viewers on TV for that audience was pretty predictable, if you take PPV as about 5% of the TV audience. So that hardcore audience showing up for wrestling not WWE is about 1.4 million people. That they haven't built on that at all is actually pretty sad.

What AEW does do well, as I think wrestling does, is that it gets its viewers to watch live more regularly. A lot of shows would only get about a third of their audience to watch every week, and AEW is doing better than 467k. And they actually seemed to convert about 10% of that audience to PPV for Double or Nothing II.

So AEW has a very strong and loyal following (for the moment). But have done absolutely nothing to bring lapsed fans back or create new ones.

I'd be impressed by >2 million people. I think the 1.4 million-2 million range is fine for bad wrestling in 2020. That's still the green zone for me. Below 1.4 million is where things go yellow. Great numbers for AEW, but not really for wrestling. Anything between 467k-934k is orange. That's when that hardcore audience is there between a third and two-thirds in potential number. Below 467k is red. I estimate the bottom for AEW is 420k.

I’m gonna go ahead and stop you at “They have the stars.” Do you mean Jericho? Do you mean Cody? Do you mean Moxley? How do you define a “star”?

Jericho, Moxley, Cody and JR all have a lot of exposure in WWE. I’m not talking Steve Austin or Hulk Hogan obviously.
