When the creative team was shown clips of Rusev matches and promos from NXT so that we could start working on ideas for him when he was called up to the main roster, I and several other members of the team burst out laughing.

With his loincloth-type ring attire, over-the-top facial expressions, wild hair and primal screams, the guy was unintentionally hilarious. This was a heel character straight out of the 1970's that would never work today, I thought.

We started coming up with pitches for him as a comedy act, but we were told that Triple H envisioned Rusev as a monster heel so we had better forget about the character being played for laughs ...

It turned out that some people above my pay grade saw some of the same flaws with Rusev's presentation that I and others on the creative team did. Before Rusev made his WWE debut, his ring attire was changed and he was instructed to tone down the facial expressions and screaming and to wet his hair so that it didn't look look so wild.

While the changes were for the better, I remained steadfast in my opinion that Rusev would never get over to the level that Triple H was expecting.

During that time, Vince McMahon also questioned whether Lana should remain part of the act or if Rusev was better off going it alone. I didn't think Rusev had a great chance of being a success even with Lana by his side, but without her he had zero chance.

Fortunately, McMahon decided to keep Lana with Rusev, and it wasn't long before "The Ravishing Russian" became one of McMahon's favorite characters (go figure).

Just like Tensai, Rusev was given a huge push from the start with the intention of having him work on top against Cena. The plan was for Rusev to be Cena's opponent at WrestleMania.

After Rusev began appearing regularly on Raw and SmackDown, I still wasn't sold on him making it as a top guy, but it did become apparent that my initial thought that he would suffer the same fate as Tensai was wrong.

Before long, I realized that Rusev was everything that Triple H thought he would be.
This guy is right Rusev is trash and always will be.

Disagree. Rusev's Russian gimmick is pretty bad IMO, but he's a pretty damn good worker. If they'd get rid of all the Russian crap and just make him a badass destroyer he'd be even better.

Of course his current gimmick has had the benefit of getting him over as a heel very quickly. Not sure how it happened since I was sure this gimmick would be shit on, but hey, it worker. Hopefully once he inevitably splits from Lana he'll slowly start to lose all the Russian stuff.

WWE officials were hoping to get Daniel Bryan back in the ring this month and have him defend the Intercontinental Title against King Barrett this Sunday at the Payback pay-per-view but as noted, they got MRI results back on May 8th and it was determined that Bryan would not be able to return any time soon, if ever again.

The situation has brought a lot of frustration within WWE. WWE officials want what's best for Bryan but they obviously want him working for the company and want him on TV as they have a DVD and other products coming out that need to be promoted. There has been some talk that Bryan is now so injury-prone that maybe they could best use him in a non-wrestling position.

Since Monday's RAW where he dropped the Intercontinental Title, the talk has been that Bryan is trying to figure out a way to get cleared. There's been no word yet if Bryan will be getting the surgery that he was so reluctant to get before but people are wondering if that's an option. Needless to say, a lot of people in the company really feel bad for Bryan right now.

We heard some rumors last week but The Wrestling Observer confirms that NXT has dropped the Shoot Nation Stable. However, they will be keeping Sawyer Fulton and Angelo Dawkins together as a tag team without the Shoot Nation label. No word yet on what they will do with stable head Chad Gable.
Quote:

 • Lot of ROH talk in the book, but mostly just listing and describing matches. Almost no talk of backstage politics or anything juicy.
 • Was only vegan for about 3 years. He had to stop due to soy intolerance.
 • NXT was almost totally unscripted for the rookies. All their reactions were genuine.
 • Bryan loved working in England, and would've stayed if he'd gotten paid better
 • Wrote 1 sentence about Punk leaving
 • Vince hated the jacket Bryan wore before his street fight with Punk. He screamed at the ref over the headset to make him take it off and never wear it again
 • Found out about his 18 second match from Jericho, who was snooping around the producers timesheets
 • First time he and Brie tried to have sex, they were interrupted by a drunken Sheamus and Ted Dibiase, who jumped on the bed after letting themselves into Bryan's unlocked hotel room
 • Book ends right after WMXXX
 • Throughout the book Bryan talks about the many MANY injuries he's had, how he has lied to doctors, and constantly returned too soon

Some highlights from Daniel Bryan's new book.

Actor Skylar Astin was on Brendan Schaub’s podcast and talked about going to UFC 184 (Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano) and sitting in the owners section and his brother went up to Lesnar and said, “Dude, you gotta come back, man. You gotta come back.” Lesnar looked at Astin’s brother and said, “Sit the f*** down. You don’t know shit. What the f***.” Lesnar’s demeanor came off like he was furious. Astin said his brother’s girlfriend started crying and that Urijah Faber and T.J. Dillashaw, who were both there, just froze. Dillashaw then told Milan Astin, “Dude, he’s going to push your shit. You’re f***ed.” His girlfriend started crying again, thinking Lesnar would really do something

Zack Ryder hasn't evolved his character in like four years though. The best thing he ever did with it was at the start with his ECW Title match with Christian too. A heel turn with Ryder sucking up to The Authority would probably be the best thing for Ryder at the moment.

Not really his fault though. I mean, what has he actually done since dropping the US title?

He did try to become more serious in that revamped show of his (forgotten the name), but WWE just seem determined not to have him do anything.

The confusion over the three-hour episode of TNA Impact Wrestling scheduled for next Friday seems to be because there will be no new episode of the show airing. Instead, Destination America will be airing the 2014 Slammiversary PPV from 8-11 p.m. It's worth noting next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S., likely the reason for the change.

Slammiversary '14 was taped June 15, 2014, in Arlington, TX, headlined by Eric Young vs. Austin Aries vs. Bobby Lashley for the TNA title. It also featured Kevin Von Erich's return to wrestling in Texas as the cornerman for sons Marshall & Ross Von Erich.
Reason is due to Destination America not wanting a new Impact episode to be shown during Memorial Day and potential hurt ratings even more than they are now. Observer also confirmed Destination America lost all interest they had with TNA in the past few months.

Sanada's release came due to a "political crossfire" between TNA and Wrestle-1, who had a talent exchange going. Wrestle-1 fell on hard financial times in Japan so they had to cut back on events and weren't able to book TNA talents following the November event at Sumo Hall that didn't do so well. When Wrestle-1 stopped booking TNA talents, TNA decided to stop using Sanada.

On Dropped Muppet Gimmick

“I thought I was a rich man. I’ll tell you how rich I thought I was. When Vince approved the gimmick, when he told me that he loved it, I took my wife out to Mr. Chow when I got home because I just saw money,” JTG said.

“It was my idea, the Idea stemmed from this character I used to do in promo class. WWE Superstars, before Raw, some Superstars were called in early to the show—like maybe an hour early—and we would have hands-on classes with Vince McMahon and we did promo classes where it was kind of like improv and working on promos.”

“He would give us an exercise where he would say ‘say anything and you have to cut a promo on it.’”

“i can’t remember what word he gave me, but there was a few times where I started talking to myself and it was highly entertaining, and I created a new character with a double personality. His name was Self.”

“The idea was for the muppet to look exactly like me,” JTG said. “The premise behind the whole Self-Muppet idea was for it to be seen and heard by the WWE Universe, but not seen by anybody backstage. For example, if me and you were talking backstage, Self would be insulting you but you couldn’t hear him. Only me and the WWE Universe, he was kind of like my conscience.”
Segment from JTG's recently released book.

I like Zack Ryder fine. He peaked in that TLC match against Ziggler though. There was nothing more for him. I thought he should have gotten a WrestleMania match against Eve's new man (preferably The Miz) where he could get a good mid-card WrestleMania moment out of that... but he just wasn't a long-term star.

I always felt like stuff with a creative base is subjective. Maybe I'm biased because I grew up watching ECW, and watching guys weaknesses getting hidden, and their strengths being accentuated, but there is literally no one on the roster right now that I feel, if given the right program and the right situation, that can't believably get over and main event a PPV or several. Or become main event players in general.

WWE is just so one track minded with shit, and not consistent, nothing ever gets started up and KEPT up. Wade should have won that title from Orton. The Kofi feud with Orton should have never stopped. Nexus should have gone over at Summerslam. Cody should have won MITB that year, since Sandow just threw it away against Cena on a random Monday night. Also, SANDOW THREW IT AWAY AGAINST CENA ON A RANDOM MONDAY NIGHT. Ryback heel turn? Fandaaaangooooo is stupid and can't be taken seriously. They tried to snuff out Daniel Bryan, but by DB's own words, they couldn't ignore it any more. If they aren't careful, Ambrose is next. And Wyatt.

Can't explain that, but I've always been behind Ryder since his Z! True Long Island Story days. Couldn't care less about any weaknesses he had, the guy made himself one of the most over guys on the roster, entirely on his own, and WWE just stood there and did fuck all with it.

Surely that's the kinda employee you'd want, right? Guy had arenas all over America (and the World, maybe?) chanting "We Want Ryder! Woo! Woo! I hate this "most over guys on the roster" thing about Ryder.

His big moments were a few in SUPER smark heavy audiences. Then two weeks later hes in Indiana and no one gives two fucks about him.

They gave his smark base a nice little payoff but No, he wasnt a long term star and he never did anything once he had the ball to keep it.

Evil Vito 05-15-2015 12:49 PM

Ryder's high water mark was always going to be holding one of the secondary belts, and he did it.

Do I think they could have done more with him than they did? Absolutely. He's not bad in the ring, has a clear passion for wrestling, and seemed to get decent reactions. He probably could have been kept solidly in the midcard where he'd actually have programs/things to do instead of immediately going back to being Superstars fodder. But World Champion? No chance.
