Last year had Joey Janella Vs. Marty Jannetty with an advertised Earl Hebner run-in because who can afford him for a full match, a battle royal featuring Glacier, Dink and the Invisible Man, Lio Rush Vs. Keth Lee and a main event of Matt Riddle Vs. Dan Severn that had no right to be as good as it was (although still very average).

It's not serious wrasslin', but it's a damn good time.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 10:17 AM

Kind of hope they have Kairi Sane enter the Elimination Chamber and win just so they run Sane vs. Asuka because fuck you.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:24 PM

Daniel Bryan has introduced a new "Top 10" concept for SmackDown. The gimmick is that it will be voted on by the talent. There's interest to be mined there, don't get me wrong -- it could definitely help the perception of certain talent. That being said, so could good booking. The question will be whether or not this lasts longer than TNA's ranking systems, or their TV Title being defended every week.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:29 PM

Sheamus & Cesaro have named the Raw Tag Team Titles "Larry & Peaches." Because apparently them already having a name...you know, being "titles" isn't inherent enough.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 02:39 PM

Sheamus' recent matches have been kinda hard to watch knowing that he's now got spinal stenosis. They're clearly trying to protect him and avoid him taking too many back bumps, but I think he's pretty clearly working on borrowed time at this point.

A shame(ful thing) really. I haven't always been his biggest fan but he can definitely go in the ring and still looks to be in great shape physically at 40. I think he'd have quite a bit more in the tank if not for the stenosis.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:43 PM

It's a shame when people don't get to end things on their own terms, but sometimes you've got to make that call and move into other things. I'm sure he could be a corner-man or even an announcer (I should probably regret saying that). But he's done movies and such before too. He could be more valuable outside the ring than in it.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:45 PM

Cesaro could make things work with a different partner. I've enjoyed all his teams. I'm sure there is someone in NXT that could use a call up, or someone who could use a fresh coat of paint. Or you can just use Cesaro in the IC Title scene. He'd make a great wrestling heel in that position.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 02:49 PM

Yeah I'd agree with that. I could see him moving to production or an ambassador type role, too. There will be stuff for him to do and he's probably going to be a lifer with the company.

I'm gonna guess that Sheamus will hang on for one more Mania. I imagine he and Cesaro dropping the belts there or maybe the night after to a debuting team (AOP?) and after that Sheamus ends his in-ring career while Cesaro goes for a solo run on SmackDown.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:50 PM

Guys have worked with spinal stenosis for years. He might be pushing through.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 02:56 PM

He's already been working with it for over six months. Doesn't mean he can't keep going for a bit but I think WWE are more conscientious about injuries now than they were even a few years ago. You can already see it in his recent matches that they're trying to protect him.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 02:58 PM

If he couldn't go you'd think they'd get him out of there. Being a tag champ isn't exactly urgent for them.

There is a guy in NXT who would be the best possible partner for him. They would be Kings. :shifty:

owenbrown 01-30-2018 03:30 PM

Fuck I didn't realize Sheamus is 40

XL 01-30-2018 03:31 PM

I was going to suggest Ohno, and have them do The Kings, but I’m not sure they have a place/want to find a place for him on the main roster.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 03:52 PM

I'm not even sure Ohno himself wants to go on the main roster, tbh. From the sounds of things he's basically an extra trainer/mentor figure for the younger people in NXT and can help teach them different styles of wrestling.

He's got job security in a role like that. On the main roster I'd expect he'd be cut fairly quickly.

Anybody Thrilla 01-30-2018 05:53 PM

Ohno today is very different from Chris Hero back then. The dynamic wouldn't feel the same. A name that keeps popping into my head is Dolph Ziggler. He's never really been in a tag team ever, unless you count The Spirit Squad. A part of me thinks he might be poison, but some guys are just better in a team, and Dolph might be one of those guys and no one has really put it all together.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 06:15 PM

Another guy, and people might hate this, because they don't like the guy, is Mojo Rawley. Working with Cesaro might help him get better in the ring, and being with Mojo might mean that Cesaro gets pushed. In that mode, Cesaro and Elias could also be beneficial to both. I'm pretty sure Jinder Mahal is a lost cause in terms of getting better, but they're obviously going to keep him around, so there's that. Curt Hawkins popped into my head because it would be a "funny" team where Cesaro does all the work and wins all their matches for them. Ha-ha, right?

Cesaro and Samoa Joe as a team of destroyers would be ideal, but it seems kind of limiting for Joe, sadly.

Anybody Thrilla 01-30-2018 06:19 PM

Those are all fine suggestions, but what if Cesaro just worked solo again?

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 06:20 PM

As I said, I'd be cool with it. Don't see the WWE as having the patience for him though. That being said, he seems more "embedded" in their culture than he has ever been before.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 07:01 PM

Cesaro's contract was set to expire at the end of 2016, he was pretty vocally upset with how he was being used, and his work with Sheamus intrigued him enough to get him to re-up.

I think keeping him in a team is the way to go, as much as I love him as a solo guy.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 07:03 PM

He's one guy I'd love to see in New Japan, should they ever do a talent exchange for some reason. Just a few tours there to be the wrestling machine. Would help refresh the fans' perspective on him a bit.

Evil Vito 01-30-2018 07:06 PM

Cesaro gets a brief NJPW run, Kitamura does his excursion in WWE. You know Vince would get a raging boner the second he saw him.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 07:11 PM

With the caveat that Vince can't beat him.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 07:12 PM

Minoru Suzuki for feuds with John Cena and Johnny Gargano, thanks.

Mr. Nerfect 01-30-2018 07:17 PM

Suzuki-gun as a heel faction running wild in NXT is a wet dream of mine. Even if it was just a version like Suzuki, Smith, Archer, ZSJ, Michinoku and Kanemaru. Suzuki as NXT Champion, Smith & Archer as Tag Champs, Kanemaru as Cruiserweight Champ and ZSJ as UK Champ. Michinoku is there because "Hey! It's Taka Michinoku!" NXT Championship goes from Almas to Black at WrestleMania, to Suzuki, to Gargano.

Why didn't she get herself booked for the Royal Rumble? In kayfabe? That would be her best way of getting to Mania, surely? And why did she have an entrance all cued up when Stephanie McMahon had no clue she worked for the company?

WWE is so dumb sometimes.

Fignuts 01-31-2018 08:11 PM

Maybe in kayfabe she feels shes not quite ready and wants to train more to make the transition, but she wanted the womens division know shes coming for them at mania?

As for your second question, the answer is "because wrestling".

How did Triple H not know sting was coming despite having a new entrance theme and titantron prepared.

If Vince is the boss, why doesn't he just not book austin and let his contract run out, if he hates him so much.

Just wrestling things.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 08:12 PM

I hate that lack of logic. You can get away with it when it's hot (Austin vs. McMahon started off logical until Russo got more power), but it's something that sucks the wind out when you're watching as a fan and it doesn't make sense.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 08:15 PM

I don't know, I just think its low hanging fruit as surpise appearances have been a part of wrestling forever and have never made much sense when held under microscope.

Not saying the segment was perfect. Rhonda's stiff as a board pointing was awkward to say the least, but she'll get coaching on that kind of stuff.

Jinder at least made some kind of sense from a marketing standpoint. Not saying I agree with it, but I at least understood what they were going for.

You would have a much tougher time making me get behind say, Curtis Axel. What demographic would he appeal to as champion.

Fignuts 01-31-2018 08:34 PM

For the record, I think Jinder would have been great as an old territories champion, which is why I didnt completely scoff at him and gave him a chance, but as wwe champion in the current era, he never completely won me over.

Simple Fan 01-31-2018 08:35 PM

Screw demographics, Curtis Axel for Universal Champion.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 08:44 PM

Jinder is, in my opinion, way too awful to ever be believable as a champion in any era. He just doesn't know how to make his shit look good, and he's been doing this for like 15 years now. It makes sense from a marketing perspective if you don't mind telling a market that you think they are stupid or don't have taste. An absolutely awful decision, and you could tell it was awful before they did it -- because no one has ever cared about Jinder Mahal.

At least two people care about Curtis Axel. And he's better in the ring. There have been moments in his career where he has not been a complete jobber too. Axel wins the IC title from Miz, defends it against Bray Wyatt and other people they are done with, then Axelmania runs wild at the Royal Rumble in Phoenix. Like a firebird, Axel's career has resurrected and risen to new heights. Brock is his friend and would drop the belt to him. Heyman would sell him. He could be IC Champion for over a year, theoretically, by this point. I'd take it over Jinder, that's all I'm saying. Axel would be more over with India.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 08:45 PM

And drop the name Curtis Axel. Have him decide he is ready to embrace his family name. Joe Hennig as IC Champion, 2019 Royal Rumble Winner and Universal Champion. Yeah, that's the meal ticket.

Bad News Gertner 01-31-2018 09:15 PM

Axel has forced charisma and it comes off really awkward.

I thought he was done after RybAxel. They teased him in NXT and that's when Axelmania got ironically over. Now he's doing The Miz stuff and has a vague purpose. I think he's got one life left when this run ends. And it's been a pretty good career for him -- 8 years on the main roster thus far.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 09:36 PM

Did some research into Axel's developmental career. Harmless trivia, really. But it reminded me that Brett DiBiase was in the business for a while. He retired because of knee problems and then became a referee before being released and then doing more wrestling and disappearing. Mike DiBiase was also a wrestler, but retired in 2008 and got into a shoot-out with police in 2014. Ted DiBiase, Jr. got further, but also left the business before long. Weird how those kids turned out.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 09:38 PM

Always found Ted, Jr. boring. But they had big plans for him. Put in The Marine and always seemed to be pushing him to some degree.

Fignuts 01-31-2018 09:55 PM

I have never understood the hype for axel. He comes off generic in every aspect to me, and the only time he was over was when he dressed up like the biggest star in the history of thd business. Which isn't really getting over as much as it is riding the coat tails of someone elses legacy.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 10:02 PM

I don't know if there's ever really been any hype for him. I think he's always just been regarded as a solid, if unspectacular hand.

He's shown flashes of greatness here and there like his run in NXT and teaming up with Ryback but WWE never bothered to put any real effort in him. Had a high profile IC title match one time against Triple H that didn't help him at all because of all the focus during and after the match was on Triple H.

Supposedly Axel's biggest benefit is him being really great as a trainer and WWE's top choice to workout with part-timers. Not sure if he works with Lesnar but he helped Goldberg and either The Rock or Batista for their returns. Might have also been Taker's WWE trainer in recent years.

Vastardikai 01-31-2018 11:21 PM

After the Miztourage run, he'll likely transition to the Performance Center.

Mr. Nerfect 01-31-2018 11:25 PM

Axel definitely helped out Brock.

He had a good look though. There was something there. He's another guy who came along in the wrong era. I even kinda liked the DiBiase posse.

I think "flashes of greatness" is overselling it a bit. Maybe "flashes of above averageness"

He actually looks like one of my friends, so I found it really hard to take him seriously. Not dopplegangers, but to the point where I used to think of him every time I saw Ted.

YEP!

Disturbed316 02-01-2018 02:46 AM

Who's watched the latest WWE 24? I knew Taker was pretty banged up but not so bad that he was limping before the match even started. Can see why he's done.

Owens, on the Kickoff show for the Rumble, actually said that he’d heard Peter Rosenberg paid for being on the pre-show and other appearances on the network. That has been one of those rumors for some time.
Ahaha. I wondered why they kept bringing an idiot like him on.

I'm slightly pissed WM is going to be at MetLife again but I'm still going

Yeah I'd really have been done to take the subway to get to Citi Field rather than however I'm going to get to Met Life.

Lucky you.

Which is funny because its 8.6 miles away from where I live... but its New York, and I live in Manhattan so of course I don't have a car. Damn buss life.

Anybody Thrilla 02-01-2018 08:45 AM

Zelena Vega is special. What a talent.

Every time I've gone to NY I stay in NJ and take the train into Penn Station. I'm guessing NXT / Raw / SD will be at Barclays.
I'm probably not going to stay for Raw and SD though

I realised today that there were no Cruiserweights in the Royal Rumble this year and I'm not counting Rey Mysterio as he's not part of the division.

Cool King 02-01-2018 03:15 PM

Also, nobody seems to have mentioned it but when Beth Phoenix entered the Royal Rumble Match, she became the first person to ever appear in both a men's and women's Royal Rumble Match, and she'll most likely be the only person to ever do that, unless Kharma makes a return, which I really can't see happening.

Cool King 02-01-2018 03:15 PM

I also found it pretty funny that Ric Flair dressed as Colonel Sanders looks exactly like Rolf Harris.

Not saying the segment was perfect. Rhonda's stiff as a board pointing was awkward to say the least, but she'll get coaching on that kind of stuff.

Who teaches the “Pointing at Signs 101” class at the PC?

They mentioned that she’d been in the Men’s Rumble on commentary. Can’t remember how much they harped on it though.

Rookies from NXT Season One employed:
Daniel Bryan
David Otunga
Heath Slater

Rookies from NXT Season Two employed:
Bray Wyatt
Curtis Axel
Percy Watson
Titus O'Neil

Rookies from NXT Season Three employed:
Naomi

Rookies from NXT Season Four employed:
Byron Saxton
EC3
Fandango
Konnor

All things considered I'm shocked there are still this many around - although if you wanted to you could cross out Percy Watson and EC3 since they were both gone for ages.

Wonder who will stick around longest. Naomi is the youngest having only turned 30 in November, but I have to think eventually she'll leave the business once she and Jimmy Uso decide to start a family.

Bray's the second youngest, turns 31 in a few months. Probably a safe bet to be the last one actively competing in WWE of the group - even if they do absolutely nothing with his character they always like to keep around a token weirdo.

Axel and Titus are two guys I never thought would last this long but I think both have a good chance at landing jobs post in-ring career. Axel as a trainer and Titus as either a manager or ambassador.

Yeah they did, but they didn't mention that cool little fact about her being the first and only person to enter both the men and women's Royal Rumble matches.

That's a pretty neat thing to be able to claim.

If they did mention it though, I must have missed it as I was too interested in watching Beth Phoenix.

Percy Watson is still there?

He must be on NXT as I don't watch that.

I can definitely see Titus being an ambassador as from what I know, the man is gold for the company when it comes to that type of stuff. Especially when it involves children and parenting (mostly fathering).

Evil Vito 02-01-2018 04:35 PM

Yeah Percy was gone for a few years but he's back in NXT as a commentator. He's not very good.
