Sega's Master System celebrates its 25th anniversary this week but unlike Super Marios's or the NES 25th anniversary, Sega has no plans to do anything special.

The Master System originally released in October 20, 1985 in Japan which ended up being 2 years after the debut of the NES in Japan and 2 days after the NES test release in the US.

Rumor has it Sega was the 1st ever customer to buy the NES in the US and used it to help with their US debut almost 6-7 months after the official NES release.

I asked for a Mega Drive for Christmas because I had played my aunties and was wowed by Sonic, but because my parents were poorish at the time, I got a Master System. Massively disappointed as an 8 year old... Until I got Wonderboy 3. Fucking awesome game. The Sonics were pretty good as well, had nothing to do with the MD ones and were better for it.

Also had a longer lifespan in Europe than the NES did. Sonic Chaos came out around the time Sonic 3 did

Toss Heavy Rain somewhere in there. Don't miss out on that one.

It was more in the response to his claim that people mostly play for the gameplay. Which was, I must say, ADORABLE.

Jeritron 10-22-2010 10:16 PM

I haven't played a MGS game since PS1, so I hardly even remember what they're like. I don't remember a thing about the story other than that you're Solid Snake and some kind of secret agent or special ops.

I've never been one to gush over video game storylines. I appreciate a decent story to thread the gameplay experience along, but I tend to view the interactive medium of gaming as just that, and tend to hate games that push their storyline to the point of being pretentious.
There's something about a lot of video game storytelling that is just so bad. I can't fully put my finger on it, but it often comes across as trying way too hard and missing the mark.

I know there are a lot of Kojima fanboys out there, but it's pretty retarded to say that this series has gotten the critical acclaim it has, based on it's story. Especially considering how dumb most of the story is.

I think you are just spending too much time on gamefaqs, where most of these mutants reside. I have a few more forums I go to, and the general consensus is, that Kojima needs writers, but the game itself is fun as hell.

Fignuts 10-22-2010 10:55 PM

I will give credit where credit is due, Metal Gear Solid 3 is much better than the other 3 in terms of story, and has legitamitly good ending.

Probably because a lot of these guys are game designers first, and writers, a very very distant second.

Definitely. It would be fun to see "real" writers cross over into games. I'm sure there are plenty who would welcome it. Perhaps game studios just don't want to pay an extra person and feel the game designers know the medium better?

#BROKEN Hasney 10-23-2010 05:32 AM

Enslaved is a really well written (by the dude who did 28 days later), paced and performed game. It's just a shame Ninja Theory can't quite get the gameplaybto match it, but the story kept me plodding through.

Yeah it totally revitalized marvel and DC. Then again it's not that necessary in games, so I can't see it happening often.

OssMan 10-24-2010 03:11 AM

Kirby's Epic Yarn, pretty good

There are plenty of writers and creators who have shown interest in video games too. I wonder if it's just a matter of pay or them not having enough time?
I know that Spielberg and Peter Jackson have both expressed their interest in video games and in developing their own.
Christopher Nolan wants to be hands on in developing a legitimate Inception video game.

Then there are guys like JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon, or a number of other television or comic writers I'd love to see make a video game that stands out as a badass story that you can play.

#BROKEN Hasney 10-24-2010 04:54 AM

Spielberg is making games for EA, but they are games without a narrative like Boom Blox. (which is an immense game).

Microsoft once again pledges better support for PC Gaming with their Games For Windows platform. This time they pledge to double the number of titles released this year and maintain support for 2011 as their main goal.

Microsoft promised almost the exact same thing in 2009 but ended up failing or continuing the Xbox 360 over PC preferences once the holiday or slow period occurred (early Summer).

Its been an issue ever since they focused on the Xbox brand at the cost of their PC platform and the debut of Vista causing problems every time they wanted to redo the Games for Windows brand.

The biggest problem is the lack of titles each month since very few months go over 3-4 new games compared to the consoles.

Emperor Smeat 10-26-2010 07:15 PM

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit demo available only for two weeks starting today and will be taken down on November 9. Europe gets the demo starting October 27.

Included in the demo:
Quote:

Both "Dark Horse" and "Roadster's Reborn" game modes will be included. The former is the standard cops and robbers/cat and mouse scenario, while the latter offers ghost car time trials to compete against. The game's "autolog" social networking feature plays heavily into the second game mode, only unlocking after players add friends into their "Need for Speed friends list."
Some rumors involve EA setting up demo servers and removing them once the game itself arrives, the game itself might not be good based on early hype, and EA can't afford another risk in sales after the NBA Jam and Elite debacle along with weaker non-sports games sales this year.

Looks like MS may have found a way to block backups. Using the new dashboard beta and attempting to boot Fable 3 doesn't work. However, the original still works even on these nodded consoles.

Vietnamese Crippler 10-27-2010 04:05 PM

New dashboards typically mean new wave, right?

So you gotta wait for a new iXtreme firmware, I believe.

#BROKEN Hasney 10-27-2010 04:08 PM

No, thats new discs. It's the same wave and it boots on the existing non-beta dash. There's not even checks on the wave on the LT firmwares so it should boot any.

Also, it's flagging the console as banned from Live in the NAND without ever connecting to Live as well...

For those with PS3s, Sony officially starting the beta version of Playstation Rewards program. The program itself will be available to everyone else starting April 2011.

To be included, you either need to be a Playstation Plus or Game Advisory Panel member.

Quote:

The program has three reward tiers: Select, Pro and Legendary. Members advance through each tier based on their level of engagement and actions including playing new games for the first time, buying content from PlayStation Network in PlayStation Store or PlayStation Home, downloading movies and TV shows, or engaging in communication with PlayStation like taking surveys.

The program is set up to recognize the most loyal, most prolific Playstation members, with about 20 percent representing that top tier, Panico said.
Right now only PS3 users are allowed but Sony wants to include PSP users into the program at a later date.

Pinball FX 2 is cool. And If you have 1, you can get the upgrades into 2 for free.

Funky Fly 10-28-2010 04:46 PM

There's 2 versions of Pinball FX 2. A free one and a $10 one.

Emperor Smeat 10-28-2010 06:34 PM

Preview of Donkey Kong Country Returns confirms the game's difficulty won't take a hit and will be very similar and at times harder than the original SNES series of games. While people complained Kirby's Epic Yarn was too easy, DKC Returns won't follow the same route in terms of no dying.

Also confirmed is Retro Studios recreated the entire "Rare" experience for the game and didn't put their own style or "Metroid Prime" style into the game.

The game is still on schedule for a November 21 release date at a $50 price.

Extreme Angle 10-29-2010 07:19 AM

Fable 3, Rock band 3 or Deadly Premonition?

Drakul 10-29-2010 07:29 AM

Fable III since you already have Kingmaker etc.

#BROKEN Hasney 10-29-2010 07:52 AM

Probably say Deadly Premonition, until you can get pro instruments unless you want a keyboard, then RB3 takes priority.

Fable would be 3rd, but DP is so cheap you can probably pick both up. DP also only has a limited release so you'll be able to pick up Fable anytime but DP may vanish from store shelves.

Guess Capcom legend Keiji Inafune wasn't kidding around when he said he hated his job : the Capcom exec said today he's leaving the company he's been with for 23 years at the end of the month.

His full job title had been Head of R&D Management Group, Consumer Games R&D Division and Contents Management Division (phew). In a blog post titled "Sayonara", Inafune explains why.

"A manager's work means evaluating your subordinates and speaking your dreams. Anyone who can do both of those can be a manager. I thought that when I came here, and I still think that now."

The problem being, Inafune believes he can no longer do both those things.

He also reflects on this 23 years at Capcom. Inafune started out as a character designer but, as he points out, he's now reached the top of Capcom's development structure. "There's nowhere higher for me to go."

"I'm leaving Capcom with the intention of starting my life over", he adds. Inafune says he's looking for his next challenge and will not be taking a break.

"People that really know me, can see where I'm coming from. I'm not a regular dude. It's probably because I'm strange."

He closes saying he'll do his best and with a "thank you".

In an interview with 4Gamer.net, Inafune states that he wants to work for Capcom. "Honestly, the situation has become such that I can't." Inafune could be referring to the reasons he gives in his blog post.

However, Inafune has increasingly taken more heat online — especially in Japan — for controversial remarks like stating that the Japanese game industry is "finished".

Inafune has also resigned from his position as CEO of Daletto, a Capcom subsidiary. Aside from Mega Man, he is best known for creating (or helping create) other notable Capcom franchises like Dead Rising, Lost Planet and Onimusha. In his post, he gave no indication of what he's moving onto next.

Source.

I wonder how this'll effect the Megaman series etc. Megaman Legends 3 in particular.

Fignuts 10-29-2010 01:20 PM

Dunno about Legends, but Megaman isn't rocket science. Keep the tight controls, and good level design, and they can do whatever they want to the rest of the game.

#BROKEN Hasney 10-29-2010 03:01 PM

Why do you think Legends 3 has votes on the designs? It was suspected this would happen.

D Mac 10-29-2010 04:12 PM

Got Hasbro Family Game Night 3 and Clue is pretty disappointing. You can't just play the classic Clue game, you have to play with their stupid Minigame rules. :(

Emperor Smeat 10-29-2010 05:47 PM

Sony of Japan denies any chance of Demon Souls II ever being made any time soon even though the company and development team loved the game in terms of sales, praise, and actual work on it.

Only thing confirmed is if it ever gets made, no PS Move support unless Sony forces it as an optional configuration.

G 10-29-2010 09:49 PM

So why are they dropping the servers so soon for DS?

Emperor Smeat 10-29-2010 10:09 PM

Either because Sony needs them for upcoming games or lack of players similar to MAG dropping servers a couple of months after it was released.

It has been about a year since the US and Japan release of the game so it probably is more related to lack of players filling the servers.

Kalyx triaD 10-30-2010 07:26 PM

Good luck, Keiji.

OssMan 10-31-2010 11:55 AM

Seiken Densetsu 3 - Really fuc*ing hard. Takes forever to level up. Insane boss fights right after each other. At least it's better than Secret of Mana.

XenoGears - I am really not about this game so far. Read for an hour, go find your friends, battle for 30 minutes, get lost in a sewers, read for another hour.

Kirby's Epic Yarn - It is so easy.
