I get Keuchel was tired, but why take him out if he's been owning the Yanks all night? At least let him pitch to McCann.

SlickyTrickyDamon 10-06-2015 10:36 PM

6 is all you need from a starter. Quality start against the Yankees in the "playoffs."

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 10:39 PM

well 6 innings and 3 runs is a "quality" start. He shut them out, beyond a quality start, and their bullpen is shakey at best as has been stated. Why not eek whatever outs you can get out of your stud whom you've trusted all season.

Evil Vito 10-06-2015 10:40 PM

He's pitching on short notice. He pitched 6.0 four days ago.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 10:41 PM

That's why I said let him pitch to McCann and see where it goes. Guys have pitched 7 innings on short notice before, not at all unheard of, and he's not throwing power pitches either.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 10:43 PM

Sipp can sleep easy tonight, didn't make that easy on himself, but made a great pitch to bird to get strike 3.

Evil Vito 10-06-2015 10:43 PM

Keuchel isn't going to start again until Sunday at the latest. There's plenty of time to rest. Feel like you should leave him out there until he tells you he's gassed.

SlickyTrickyDamon 10-06-2015 10:44 PM

He does average 7 innings per start though so it is a bit odd.

The only way a pitcher tells you he is gassed is by giving up hits/runs. There's no way he's gonna say "Hey Coach I've got nothing left." Sometimes it's too late.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 10:46 PM

Like I get if you bring him out and he walks McCann or McCann drives the ball hard for extra bases you take him out, but jeez, trust your ace, particularly pitching on a shut out.

Probably not. Expectations were low to begin with this season, most had them hovering right around .500

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 11:25 PM

I think they proved down the stretch that they weren't too hot of a team and no where near being a competitor.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 11:26 PM

Which would be why the Red Sox and Jays towards the end of the season had their way with them. I mean... there were tight games and whatnot, but the Yanks couldn't get it done when it counted.

Emperor Smeat 10-06-2015 11:34 PM

Had the Angels gotten hot sooner, Yankees likely don't make the playoffs. They started to really struggle once the Jays started their mega rise but the cushion they had built when the rest of the AL East was terrible was just enough to let them sweak in.

Evil Vito 10-06-2015 11:46 PM

Forgot to do a final review of my preseason predictions:

NL East: WAS, NYM (WC2), MIA, ATL, PHI
NL Central: STL, PIT (WC1), CHC, CIN, MIL
NL West: LAD, SD, SF, COL, ARI

MVP: Harper
CY: Kershaw
ROTY: Bryant
CPOTY: Harvey
MOTY: Maddon

Pretty excellent for the most part. 4 of 5 playoff teams and I remember trying to decide between the Mets and Cubs for the 2nd WC, turns out both made it. A couple small things like not forecasting the Padres being awful but still pretty close. And for the awards all 5 are legit candidates and with the exception of the CY (voters will give it to Arrieta), the other 4 may well end up winning.

AL East: TOR, BOS (WC2), BAL, NYY, TB
AL Central: DET, CHW, CLE, KC, MIN
AL West: LAA, SEA (WC1), OAK, HOU, TEX

MVP: Trout
CY: Price
ROTY: Norris
CPOTY: Machado
MOTY: McClendon

Oh dear god LOL me. I'm glad to have gotten the Toronto prediction right but at the expense of literally everything else. For some reason I saw KC crashing back down to earth and couldn't have been more wrong. Just so many things wrong across the board.

Trout and Price should be no worse than runner up for their awards. Machado was a total guess as I never know who will be eligible for CPOTY. Norris should be really good going forward but didn't do enough to win ROTY, besides it's clearly Correa's award. LOL McClendon.

Oh and my projected WS champion (Dodgers) are still alive but I hope they don't win for obvious reasons. And my projected AL champions (Angels) didn't even make the playoffs.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-06-2015 11:52 PM

Biggest concern for the Jays is I think Osuna is going to get lit up like a christmas tree. Not because of his 3 blown saves this season because he's mostly looked quite good, but because he's 20-years-old and he's going to be playing against the big boys in big boy situations. Still think he has a good future, and he's near unhittable when he keeps his fastball low and on the corners.

Evil Vito 10-06-2015 11:55 PM

At least the Mets postseason gear I bought was to commemorate their first division title in 9 years. To think some people actually dropped $28 on this for that type of performance in a one-game playoff:

Think it's gonna be tight one. The pitching matchup might objectively be one of the greatest wild card matchups ever. I like the Cubs' lineup better. I like Maddon as an in game manager over Hurdle.

I'm betting on Chi town but it's a really a toss up.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-07-2015 06:06 PM

Considering the cards, Pirates and Cubs have the 3 best records in the National League, it kind of blows that the Cubs and Pirates have to knock one or the other off in the Wild Card game. Nature of the beast I know, but it's still whack as fuck.

Damian Rey 10-07-2015 06:19 PM

I've always liked the idea of just taking the best records, with the bottom two getting to play the play in game, regardless of division.

SlickyTrickyDamon 10-07-2015 06:29 PM

Cards deserve the ring they won the most games in the season.

Winning your division has to mean something.

Frank Drebin 10-07-2015 06:44 PM

Maddon been hitting the pitcher 8th all year and for this game he decides to hit him 9th. Interesting.

Also not a fan of the recent benching of Chris Coghlan. I like LaStella and all, but I'm surprised that Maddon has taken a shining to LaStella after Coghlan was that guy most of the year.

Damian Rey 10-07-2015 07:15 PM

Probably a gut feeling. Something I'm completely against going with. You dance with what brung ya as Jim Ross used to say.

Hurdle went way too long with volquez last year and waited till he was gassed and the game was over to pull him. Wonder if Cole's leash is shorter. Granted they're two completely different guys, however I can see Hurdle trying to avoid being too passive with his pitching changes tonight.

It's not like you're out of the game if you're the pirates.

Evil Vito 10-07-2015 10:54 PM

This'll be 2 years in a row the Pirates fell victim to a complete game shutout in their building during the Wild Card game. Ouch.

Evil Vito 10-08-2015 10:06 AM

I'm sure there will be a lot of outcry about a 98 win team being bumped after one game, but I'm really not sure what the fix is.

You could conceivably do a best of 3 Wild Card series that runs from Monday through Wednesday with the regular playoffs starting Thursday, but what if there's a rainout or something? It could screw up the entire playoff schedule.

Seeding all playoff teams by best record regardless of division winners wouldn't work either as it'd make winning the division at all somewhat pointless. And MLB isn't going to get rid of divisions to go to a balance schedule because it'd cut down on rivalry games and add a ton of miles to the travel schedule.

Evil Vito 10-08-2015 10:07 AM

I do think things will be a bit better once the league expands to 32 teams in the next few years as it the rumor.

2 divisions of 8 teams per league. Division winners get homefield in the first round, the top wild card team gets a "bye" to the division series and the other two play the one game playoff as they do now. Schedule will be somewhat more balanced then.

road doggy dogg 10-08-2015 10:27 AM

Evil Vito 10-08-2015 12:36 PM

Yah. Don't really see any way around it if they expand though. MLB seems really gung-ho on having an equal number of teams per division, hence the Astros move to the AL.

Wouldn't really like to expand tbh, there doesn't seem to be enough legit talent out there for the 30 current teams.

Would they be expanding the amount of minor league teams as well?

That's another 2-3 smaller teams for every expansion team in MLB going by the current set up. Even more if you start counting developmental teams and other associated teams each MLB club has under their umbrella.

Gallardo is going next for the Rangers and I don't see a very good outing in his future. He doesn't miss bats and if he's relying on the Jays to hit his mediocre fastball into outs it's gonna be a long evening.

Why not use the NFL model? 1st round best of 3, 2nd best of 5, ALCS/NLCS and WS best of 7.

Regular season play:
- your 3 division foes 18 times each (3 3-game series home and away)(54 games)
- a 3-game series against the other 12 teams in your league, home and away (72 games)
- a 2-game series EITHER home OR away against 15 of the 16 teams in the other league (30 games)
- a 2-game series home and away against your "natural" rival as has been in place since 2013 (4 games)

54+72+30+4=160. Each team ends up losing 1 home date and 1 away date.

I was pondering the problematic postseason travel schedule, and just came up with something: The team WITHOUT home field in rounds 1 and 2 host first (Game 1 in round 1 and Games 1&2 in round 2) The team WITH the advantage then hosts the remaining games in the series. You end up with only one travel day per series.

The removal of 2 games would make the season end on a Friday. Any tie-breaker game would be played on Saturday, and the first round schedule would be Sunday/Tues/Wed. Round 2 then would be Fri/Sat/Mon/Tues/Wed. CS and WS would be unaffected.
