They had a confrontation at Wrestlemania fought each other in a 6 man at Summerslam, fought at Survivor Series and headlined a MSG show

Roddy Piper, Duggan, and Bad News in particular.

Rumor going around the net regarding the next SuperStar Shakeup hints at it happening in around 3 weeks assuming Vince doesn't change his mind or plans.

Since 2001, WWE has used eight titles as a "world title". One company. Using eight different "world titles" over a 16 year span. That's one way to shit on the prestige of being world champion.

Let me try to write them down

1. WWE Championship
2. WCW Championship (World Championship)
3. World Heavyweight Championship
4. ECW Championship (not sure if this counts)
5. Universal Championship

Are you considering the Undisputed Championship, and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as separate entities? Or are you referring to the physical title that represents the world championship?

SPOILER: show

WWE Championship (since 2001)

1. Winged Eagle title.
2. Winged Eagle title and the "Big Gold" title.
3. Undisputed title.
4. Spinner title.
5. Non Spinner Spinner title.
6. Last title design with the old scratched logo.
7. Last title design with the old scratched logo and the "Big Gold" title.
8. WWE World Heavyweight title design with the modern logo.

World (WCW) Championship

1. "Big Gold" title

World Heavyweight Championship

1. "Big Gold" title.
2. Updated "Big Gold" title with WWE branding. (not going to include the leather updates)

ECW Championship

1. ECW World Heavyweight Wrestling title.
2. Phoenix title.

Universal Championship

1. Red strap and modern logo. (similar to the current WWE Championship design)

GD 08-28-2017 12:52 AM

WWE Championship
WCW/World Championship
Undisputed Championship
WWE Championship
World Heavyweight Championship
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
WWE Championship
Universal Championship

I think that's what #1-wwf-fan means. But they also considered the ECW World Title an actual World Title until 2007 too.

1, 3, 6, and 7 are under the lineage of the WWE Championship.

#1-norm-fan 08-28-2017 02:47 PM

That doesn't make things any less convoluted.

3 is a combination of two titles. 6 was a completely different title that existed at the same time as the other WWE title. Just because WWE decided to add a spot in the lineage where there were two champions at the same time, they were still two different titles being held by different people. And 7 is, again, a combination of two different titles that hadn't been unified before.

All 8 of those are distinctly different titles that were born out of distinctly different circumstances regardless of the lineage WWE chooses to use. It's a mess. Especially for such a short period of time. I can see it over the span of 100 years as companies are coming and going and merging titles becomes a necessity. This is all WWE just being fickle and not knowing what to do though. lol

IMO, it is the biggest clusterfuck creatively, in terms of why would you want to be (or root for or against) a wrestler if there's no clear definition of who the best in the world/company is and so there's no ultimate goal for the wrestler's career. I know, kayfabe is dead, blah, blah, blah. If you don't treat it somewhat consistently seriously though (and this is just one of the (many) ways WWE has simply shit on their own product), then what's at stake and the outcome has no importance. As a result, there's no reason for me to actually or even want to tune in to watch.

#1-norm-fan 08-28-2017 03:23 PM

Kayfabe aside, shit has to matter in the story.

I love when people talk about how the outcome of the matches don't matter and the titles are just props. Until WWE starts building shows based on angles and WrestleMania is being headlined by simply a heated confrontation, the match outcomes better matter and the titles better be a pretty important/prestigious prop or else why the fuck is anyone supposed to care?

Technically you are correct, but that has no bearing onto how things are perceived. If eight actors play one character in a TV show, you can still say "Hang on, it's only one character -- chill out," but if people are seeing the mechanics of it all, then it really doesn't matter.

To the layperson -- someone perhaps not technically researching title histories -- having the WCW Title change its name, the WWF Title unified with it, a new belt come in, a new old belt come in opposite that, a third belt introduced, one of those belts dropped, the remaining two belts smooshed together, a new belt created opposite it could get quite overwhelming.

It's about as ridiculous as saying "the stakes don't matter in a story." Um, okay? So why I am reading this book, or watching this movie? The belts are your easier way to introduce stakes. "I want to be the best!" "No, I am the best!" "Let's fight and see who is the best!" They're not the only stakes you can have, but they are certainly stakes. When you take the importance of them away, you might as well be saying "This doesn't matter." Every time a champion loses a non-title match, that's my emotional response. "Okay, being the champion means nothing. So why I am watching?"

A championship should be the answer to the question "Who is the best?" If you have two champions, you really don't have two champions -- you have two contenders. They should fight to find out who is the best.

I think this issue is underrated in terms of how off-putting it would be to casual fans. When it comes to comic books, cartoons, combat sports or wrestling, one of the most innocent and base pleasures of those forms is "Who would win between..." You want to know who the most bad-ass is. When you have "two World Champions" you are instantly negating that knowledge as a possibility.

Not that there is any doubt as to who is better between Brock Lesnar and Jinder Mahal, haha. But how is being WWE Champion supposed to mean something if everybody knows there is someone who can kick the champion's ass?

So just announce Cena V Reigns on a social media video giving them no real build, reason to fight or anything of the sort other than to make a PPV with a D-tier name value mean something. Are subscriptions down or something?

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-28-2017 06:03 PM

D-tier name? It's the name used on one of the best wrestling games of all time.

Agree with everything else though. They talked for like 20 seconds on Raw about having this match before being interrupted by the Miz. Also Cena not taking it seriously at all on Raw makes this feel so stupid right now.

If its like the Cruiser title change and other head scratching decisions, purely done to artificially spike RAW's rating for the week.

WWE has only 2 weeks left before the NFL season onslaught begins.

I want to see his ascent and how long the guy had to just lie down on that table. It should also be set to the Benny Hill Chase song.

But will this work as a ratings spike? We already knew both dudes would be at the show and now instead of looking to see tension build and seeing if there's an interesting way to get there, well have the usual "hurrr you're a part time, no I'm not!" Cena and opponent in-ring promo.

I think it was always on their mind. Not as bad as now. It would take a lot of research but I don't think Raw has ever beaten MNF in the ratings even during the height of it's popularity. Football has always been king.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2017 08:41 PM

But they still kicked ass with their ratings regardless. Thus, they didn't fear NFL. Their ratings are so piss poor now they can't handle losing ANY viewers.

Bad News Gertner 08-28-2017 09:26 PM

Ratings are pretty much meaningless nowadays

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-28-2017 09:35 PM

Wouldn't say meaningless but they certainly don't quite carry the same weight. Ratings sank well before they stopped meaning as much, still.

Yeah, I have a couple shows where Inoki defends it. He defended it at the Showdown at Shea in 1980 against Larry Sharpe which I have and I think he defended it against Charlie Fulton at an 1984 MSG show that I have.

Wasn't it a "bullshit" title? I mean, he was led to believe he was supposed to win the WHC, but WWF wasn't keen on having a world champion that wasn't contracted and as a result, Inoki got the bait & switch? I think I might be confusing stories here and am actually just looking for clarification.

Bad News Gertner 08-29-2017 11:24 PM

So the World Martial Arts Title was created for Inoki in 78.

Inoki won the WWF title from Backlund in Japan in 1979. The plan was for Inoki to drop the title back to Backlund right before Backlund's tour end. Instead of dropping the title, the match ended in a no contest. The WWF being double crossed refused to acknowledge Inoki's win. They tried to get Inoki over in the U.S but it didn't work at all. From what I've heard, Inoki booked the no contest to try and get a rematch at MSG. Nobody in North America ever gave a shit about Inoki or pretty much all of the Japanesse wrestlers except for Tiger Mask and later the Bomb Angels/Glamour Girls. And that includes guys like Yoshi Yatsu, Fujinami, Choshu etc...

Not sure if this is thread worthy but,

If you had to combine 3 past gimmicks to be dolphs new gimmick what would you combine and how?

I would choose for Dolph to be an Undead male pornstar who sells time shares for Puerto Rican condos.

According to Triple H, there was some talk in the WWE to name the Mae Young Classic after Fabulous Moolah instead. He rejected the idea in favor of Mae since he wanted her to be honored and felt she was a better symbol for the theme of the event.

Probably a good idea seeing as Moolah was a massive cunt.
