More examples of good art-

Only the page panel.

Kalyx triaD 08-22-2013 04:20 PM

Arrow will be getting a whole episode based on the League of Assassins (/Shadows). Merlyn was revealed to have been trained by them. Most interesting.

Lock Jaw 08-22-2013 04:21 PM

I should maybe catch up with the rest of season 1. When does season 2 start?

Kalyx triaD 08-22-2013 04:31 PM

This Fall, not sure the exact date.

Fignuts 08-22-2013 04:50 PM

Those Spider-Man panels while not bad are about average, compared to all the amazing stuff out there. Sooooooo many great artists out there right now. My god, Ivan Reis. The fact that this guy does what he does, and still manages to meet mainstream book deadlines is a miracle. He is in my opinion, the greatest penciller in comics history. Then there's stuff like X-Force which has been one of the most consistently gorgeous books the last few years. Captain America, Future FoundAtion, Cable, Iron Fist, Punisher, and Wolverine also comes to mind. On the DC side, in addition to Ivan Reis, there's guys like Phil Jimenez and the iconic Jim Lee.

And it's not just the art itself which is great. Scenes are often drawn from more dynamic angles than the straight shot with goofy poses of decades past.

Now there are a lot more artists with unique visual styles than there used to be, and I can understand if some of them aren't your cup of tea. Stuff like Quietly and Yu can be a love it or hate it affair. However to say the art as a whole is bad is just absurd to me. I can't really be kind about it, because I've been reading comics regularly since 1987, and in my opinion, the art today is the best it's ever been by an extremely wide margin.

DaveBrawl 08-22-2013 04:52 PM

Season 2 of Arrow starts on Oct. 9.

He was the one Bruce didn't kill in Batman Begins.

Kalyx triaD 08-22-2013 05:32 PM

Let there be such a monologue that reveals as much. I will lose my fucking mind.

McLegend 08-22-2013 05:35 PM

I would love a Malcolm Merlyn origin story.

Lock Jaw 08-23-2013 01:20 PM

So after the Trinity War and the Forever Evil event, it has been announced that the Justice League of America will be moving to Canada and will be called the Justice League of Canada.

Their new base will be somewhere with "Moose" in its name, and a lot of the "action" will take place in Toronto.

Kalyx triaD 08-23-2013 03:17 PM

This reads like a joke but I'm certain DC would do this.

The Destroyer 08-23-2013 05:35 PM

It's not a joke and they are. They're doing it with the Justice League of America lineup though, rather than the Justice League "proper".

The Destroyer 08-23-2013 05:41 PM

Also Adam Strange is now Canadian, apparently.

DaveBrawl 08-23-2013 08:20 PM

I kind of like it personally. Like Baird said it isn't the Batman/Superman/WW team, it's essentially Justice League "C" team (depending on your view of JL Dark) and I always thought Alpha Flight was a fun series years ago until they kind of lost their way.

dronepool 08-23-2013 09:54 PM

FUCK THE NEW 52

On top of everything annoying- THEY DESTROYED LOBO.

I "like" the new design but THAT ISN'T LOBO! It's a Twilight-wannabe edgy-Lobo! This whole "edgy" thing is getting ridiculous, it's enough that people like Kayne West and Lil Wayne try to be dark and edgy and now we have comics trying to turn a hulked up Wolverine satire into this.

He looks like Lobo's kid more than Lobo if anything. His new design looks like it was made to hopefully appeal to younger people who are just discovering stuff like that because being dark and edgy became a fad for some reason. I love change in big comics- I adore Superior Spider-Man, I adore Morrisons Batman, I don't mind Affleck as Batman until I see the trailer it's not a big deal at all, I love goth rock/goth culture but this design just seems like it has no reason, Lobo had a unique look.

http://i.newsarama.com/images/i/000/...jpg?1377276741

slik 08-23-2013 10:19 PM

I was just about to post this.

I think Lobo had a pretty distinguished look before. I'm not sure why they really needed to update it.

The design itself isn't terrible I just would've preferred a bulkier Lobo rather than sleeker one and I wish they went with darker hair.

dronepool 08-23-2013 10:24 PM

now he looks like some vampire kid that would fit into some Image comic or somebody Blade should fight.

Kalyx triaD 08-23-2013 10:28 PM

Is this even the final design because I saw a few posted at Newsarama, including an interesting samurai-ish concept.

dronepool 08-23-2013 10:30 PM

I think so. The samurai-ish one was better than this.

http://www.newsarama.com/18756-dc-re...752#f170719134

Kalyx triaD 08-23-2013 10:36 PM

I mean would rather Biker Lobo and you would think he would fit in this 'edgy' New 52 naturally but if I had to choose some redesign I'd roll with the space samurai.

slik 08-23-2013 11:41 PM

While the redesign isn't my favorite, I like the new writer's take on the character in this interview:

http://www.newsarama.com/18200-new-f...ins-month.html

Quote:

Nrama: As I'm sure you're aware, Lobo originally represented all that was "cliché" about comic book "bad-assery." Is he still that character at all? How would describe the character now, as you're writing him?

Bennett: The surest way to miss the mark of what is “cool” or “badass” is to focus on those words and concepts. If you miss a target in archery, it’s because you were thinking too much about the target, and not enough about what you were doing to hit the target.

I have no intentions to make Lobo “cool” or “badass." I will write him proud, vicious, indifferent, driven, and self-satisfying.

Kalyx triaD 08-24-2013 12:17 AM

Alright, decent thoughts.

DaveBrawl 08-24-2013 09:59 AM

Seems to me that if he was meant to be cliche about all that was "cool" and "manly" when he was created, they appear to be doing the same with this current redesign.

He's pretty much the stereotype for everything that is "dark", "mysterious" and "gothic" and all of that nonsense that Twilight and it's contemporaries like to claim these days.

Shadow 08-24-2013 02:41 PM

Oh so that's what that thing is supposed to be.

parkmania 08-24-2013 08:41 PM

He looks like a pale Dick Greyson. Do not like.

Reavant 08-25-2013 12:28 PM

its a woman writing lobo so that explains this

Kalyx triaD 08-25-2013 03:05 PM

Really, dude?

Reavant 08-25-2013 03:30 PM

its a joke kalyx calm down

The new Lobo, who sports a sleek new character design by Kenneth Rocafort, will be unveiled in the September Villains month one-shot, Justice League #23.2: Lobo. The new Lobo is evidently extremely pissed off that someone has been stealing his thunder, and he’s determined to do something about it.

Writing on The Source, Harras announced that Justice League #23.2: Lobo from the creative team of Marguerite Bennett, Ben Oliver, Cliff Richards, and Daniel Brown “will contain a major surprise.” In the book that is due out on September 11th, the real Lobo is on a quest to kill the man who has taken his name.

The rejected designs all featured a thicker version of Lobo like this one, which was Rocafort's first try.
Rocafort produced several prototypes for the new Lobo, and DC picked the leanest design that Rocafort produced, which features updated facial tattoos, laser-edged blades, and powerful gloves—a new look that according to Harras “turns Lobo into a lean, mean killing machine.”

Still think it's almost as much gash as Miley Cyrus at the VMAs.

There'a also the fact the series he mentions as "doing well" or whatever was released back in 2006, so I doubt this is a conversation he had with DC recently.

The Destroyer 08-27-2013 05:39 PM

http://www.newsarama.com/18704-paul-...-projects.html

And there we go. It was a conversation he had "7 or 8 years ago".

Kalyx triaD 08-27-2013 06:07 PM

Damn.

Fignuts 08-28-2013 12:51 AM

Well to be fair, 7 or 8 years ago they were targeting older fans.

Also, Linkara is terrible.

slik 08-29-2013 06:23 PM

There is a deathwatch blog for Nightwing:

http://isnightwingdead.blogspot.com/

I don't think Dick Grayson is dying anytime soon.

Kalyx triaD 08-29-2013 09:26 PM

Okay.

slik 08-29-2013 10:09 PM

Kalyx don't be grumpy.

You know Forever Evil has brought the latest round of 'Is Nightwing Dying' talk up again since DC keeps saying 'bad things are going to happen to Dick Grayson, very bad' and 'September 4th all comic books fans and even the mainstream media will be talking about Dick Grayson'.

A lot of folks think Dick Grayson's identity is about to go public and a lot of folks think he is biting the big one again (which Dan Didio has done nothing to discourage of course).

I think it's DC over-hype personally.

Kalyx triaD 08-29-2013 10:19 PM

I wasn't being grumpy, but we talk about potential happenings all the time without having a full on blog site going up.

slik 08-29-2013 10:24 PM

I know.

That's why I find it entertaining someone made one.

Lock Jaw 08-29-2013 10:39 PM

Perhaps if you made more detailed posts than "Okay", people might not take it as you being grumpy.

Anyways, there have been rumors of Dick Grayson dying since Infinite Crisis. Don't see it happening any time soon.

Don't see his identity being made public either, because it is only a short jump away to figure out Batman's identity in that case.

Kalyx, don't be grumpy.

Gonna throw a fit if they kill Dick Grayson but leave Jason Todd alive.

slik 09-04-2013 10:35 AM

and the big Nightwing scoop is...

SPOILER: show
his real identity is revealed to the world by the Crime Syndicate

Reavant 09-04-2013 11:36 AM

thats dumb

Reavant 09-04-2013 11:37 AM

unless they actually thought out someday linking it to batman/bruce

Kalyx triaD 09-04-2013 06:20 PM

Kalyx triaD 09-04-2013 06:25 PM

Oh shit, regressive habit. Sorry

Lock Jaw 09-04-2013 07:51 PM

Could have left it, now it looks like Shadow and I are crazy people

Kalyx triaD 09-04-2013 07:56 PM

I don't even know what you're talking about.

dronepool 09-06-2013 05:08 AM

Forever Evil was cool- I didn't follow DC besides Batman Inc and Batman upto Year Zero.. dropped Batman don't care about more origins but this was awesome and I had no clue that there was even a big DC event, which I'm assuming it is?

Flipping though this Ultraman snorting powdered Kryptonite and Owlman/the Nightwing thing sold me. Love the evil JLA/CSA.

What's the verdict on Secret Six and Gotham City Sirens? I've heard moderately good things about them but I don't spend too much time on comic book talk these days, so I'm kind of out of the loop. The first few issues of each are discounted on the Kidnle store though, and since that's where my book library is, I thought this would be the best place to try. If they're decent.

Lock Jaw 09-12-2013 08:11 PM

They were both indeed good. Was sad that they had to be canceled to make way for the stupid new universe.

Fignuts 09-12-2013 08:38 PM

Secret Six has always been great.

dronepool 09-12-2013 09:04 PM

The last incarnation of Secret Six was good, Catman and Rag Doll are awesome. Gotham City Sirens was alright but bored me after like 7 or 10 issues but I started to become jaded and cut back on comics around then.

Kalyx triaD 09-13-2013 10:09 PM

Glee's Grant Gustin shall portray Barry Allen in Arrow, and possibly the Arrow spin-off starring Flash. This casting is significant in that there's plenty rumors and fan requests that Arrow share the new Man of Steel continuity where Batman is set to appear in the next movie. This would save them some time when they get around to Justice League, not too mention Arrow has so successfully built a grounded world for itself, Man of Steel and even the Dark Knight trilogy could readily accept it.

But yeah, they have a Flash. He will be the first 'superhero' as far as Arrow is concerned.

Lock Jaw 09-13-2013 10:35 PM

I am sure all those fan requests will tip the scales

Damian Rey 09-13-2013 10:42 PM

Pretty young kid to cast as Flash.

Kane Knight 09-13-2013 11:57 PM

I was surprised to find he's only 23. Aren't most of the Glee cast in their late 30s? You know, like most TV high schoolers?

Still, I have no real metric for how old Flash should be, so I don't know. Is this really all that bad?

Damian Rey 09-14-2013 12:01 PM

Nah. More of just on observation based on a similar reaction of discovering he's pretty young. Sure he will do fine.

McLegend 09-15-2013 08:27 PM

So last month Kevin Smith and Grant Morrison did something where they talk about comic books... Well the Killing Joke was brought up, and Grant Morrison brought up this really interesting aspect that I never considered...

So first does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Second... Does anyone agree with Grant Morrison?

I'll post it if people want me to.

Kalyx triaD 09-15-2013 09:40 PM

Why would you not post it?

Lock Jaw 09-16-2013 12:33 AM

Yeah, if you want to discuss something, you should at least say what it is.

McLegend 09-16-2013 01:16 PM

I didn't want to spoil it and get yelled at.

Lock Jaw 09-16-2013 01:17 PM

Spoil what? The Killing Joke? Or what someone said about it? I don't think people care about spoilers of either.

McLegend 09-16-2013 01:24 PM

I can't embed right now.

After researching it last night apparently it's old news to comic book smarks. I'd never heard of it. I think it's a pretty interesting to way to look at the ending. It does make sense in some ways. I'm not saying I agree with Grant Morrison, but I can definitely see where he is coming from.

So I did end up buying a few of the DC sale comics. Was Ed Nigma's "legitimate" persona featured in comics or was that more or less a one-off with GSS? Because I think I'd enjoy more of the Riddler Reformed.

The Destroyer 09-16-2013 04:37 PM

He was reformed for a few years in the comics from what I remember. From maybe 2006 to 2009.

Nice Batman fan-film, but you're tying your own noose saying it's in TDK universe. You don't say that and then open with super campy characters/portrayals. I do like that Red Hood's voice is modeled after the animated movie version.

I enjoyed Riddler's "reformed" days. Mostly it can be found in the pages of Paul Dini's Detective Comics (which yeah, was from around 2006-2009)

That fits with the timeframe of sirens. Was it any good?

The idea of Nigma using his insanity for good intrigues me. I may have to track down the comics, period.

On a side note, I love the whole "panel view" thing Kindle does. Means I can read on my phone, since my tablet doesn't seem to want to cooperate.

Sad Geoff Johns is leaving Green Lantern. One of, if not the most consistently good books out there.

OH WAIT

Kalyx triaD 09-20-2013 01:43 AM

WE LOVE YOU, DC COMICS/WB

Fignuts 09-20-2013 01:44 AM

Speaking of which, bought the first two trades of new 52 GL. One of the only titles to retain the original dcu continuity. Probably because the book was so danced good.

Anyway they're both great. Loving the dynamic between Hal and Sinestro as a GL. Really adding depth to the Sinestro character.

Fignuts 09-20-2013 01:46 AM

Yes auto correct GL was so danced good. The salsas and funky chickens in that book are amazing.

Lock Jaw 09-28-2013 09:37 PM

A Constantine TV series is now also in development at NBC.

Fignuts 09-29-2013 02:44 AM

Just read the first trade of New 52 Animal Man. Shit is so good. Surreal, disturbing art reminds me of John Carpenter's The Thing.
