NEW YORK -- Yogi Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher renowned as much for his dizzying malapropisms as his record 10 World Series championships with the New York Yankees, has died. He was 90.

Berra died of natural causes Tuesday at his home in New Jersey, according to Dave Kaplan, the director of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center.

"While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom," Berra's family said in a statement released by the museum. "We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant so much to so many. He will truly be missed."

Matthews: The unforgettable Yogi Berra
Among the late Yogi Berra's lasting contributions to baseball and America is this: He kept a nation of fans smiling.
Berra's death came exactly 69 years after his major league debut. On Sept. 22, 1946, Berra homered in his second major league plate appearance in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Athletics.

Short, squat and with a homely mug, Berra was a legendary Yankee who helped the team reach 14 World Series during his 18 seasons in the Bronx.

Berra played in more World Series games than any other major leaguer and was a three-time American League Most Valuable Player. A 15-time All-Star, Berra was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.

But his name appears almost as often in Bartlett's Famous Quotations as it does in baseball's record book.

"It ain't over 'til it's over" is among eight "Yogi-isms" included in Bartlett's.

"When I'm sittin' down to dinner with the family, stuff just pops out. And they'll say, 'Dad, you just said another one.' And I don't even know what the heck I said," Berra insisted.

Just saw someone on Twitter link to a potential scenario that would see a 6-way tie for the 2nd AL Wild Card:

Teams: Astros, Twins, Angels, Indians, Orioles, Mariners
Goal: They finish 83-79

Remaining Schedule and Results:
(80-72) Astros: vs Angels (0-1), vs Rangers (2-1), @ Mariners (0-3), @ Diamondbacks (1-2)
(77-73) Twins: vs Indians (1-1), @ Tigers (1-2), @ Indians (2-2), vs Royals (2-1)
(77-74) Angels: @ Astros (1-0), vs Mariners (1-2), vs Athletics (2-1), @ Rangers (2-2)
(74-75) Indians: @ Twins (1-1), @ Royals (2-1), vs Twins (2-2), vs Red Sox (3-0), vs Tigers (1-0)
(74-76) Orioles: @ Nationals (1-1), @ Red Sox (3-0), vs Blue Jays (3-1), vs Yankees (2-1)
(74-77) Mariners: @ Royals (1-1), @ Angels (2-1), vs Astros (3-0), vs Athletics (3-0)

Close to zero chance of it happening but fuck it would make for an entertaining October.

I wasn't sold on bringing him back as a starter at first and easing him back into things in the bullpen for a few weeks, but he's been on fire and may take over for Buehrle come October once he gets his 200+ innings for the 700th consecutive season....

It's not a maybe, at this point unless something dramatically changes (always possible) Stroman is a lock, as John Gibbons has stated.

Washington had won 7 of 8 before running into the Orioles. They're still more than capable of beating the bad teams left on their schedule.

The Mets meanwhile are playing like a team that has already clinched and they sleepwalked through this last homestand. And if the Braves series showed anything, it's that these second division clubs aren't just going to lie down. The Reds and Phillies may suck but playing the first place team from New York is going to be their World Series.

The Mets SHOULD be able to win 5 of 7 on the road and make whatever the Nats do moot, but I don't know if it will actually play out that way. I could easily see this coming down to the last weekend where the Mets will be hosting the Nats and the Mets will have all of the pressure to avoid completing the collapse on them. Where have I heard that before?

Orioles are only 3.5 back with 10 to go. They have the best record of any wild card contender over last 10 games. Feels like they could pull a KC last year and sneak in.

I can't help it :o when the Mets eventually clinch it will be just their 8th playoff berth in 54 seasons of existence. The last time they were knocked out of the playoffs in 2006, I took solace in knowing they'd built a team that should be in October for years to come. They haven't been back since.

And that team was built on a killer lineup that included Wright, Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado. This Mets team and its long-term projections are built on pitching which is way more volatile. So while I'm optimistic that the future can be even brighter for the Mets, the past has taught me that future playoff berths are no guarantee.

Just gonna enjoy the fuck out of this while I can.

If my team was in the playoffs I would not want to play them at all. Kansas City may beat them but I can't see anyone else from the AL. Would LOVE to see Toronto in he World Series dropping 10 a night on whoever comes from the NL though.

If KC can take an early lead and get the game to their pen, Toronto has nothing but right handed hitters who match up poorly. Tulo may not be 100% if he can play. Whoever has the lead after 6 innings wins.

The same can be said if Jays can jump all over KC starters.... bullpen doesn't need to be great when you can score 5 an inning quite easily....

I do have faith. We had a nice and healthy lead over the Blue Jays earlier in the season. Then the trade deadline happened, Toronto overtook us, and haven't looked back since.

But faith has been slowly going out the window ever since The Boss died. The Steinbrenner kids are clueless on what direction to take team. And we don't know if they're willing to open the wallet or not.

Blue Jays or the 'Stros if they get in for the AL, Mets, Pirates or Cubs for the NL.

Bad News Gertner 09-28-2015 12:55 AM

I feel "just happy" that the Jays got into the playoffs although my expectations should be a lot higher with the offence that the Jays have. One more home run for Jose and 5 for Edwin ( and we know how hot he can get) and the Jays will have 3 players with 40 home runs.

Evil Vito 09-28-2015 09:41 AM

I feel pretty much the same way with the Mets. I had them winning the 2nd Wild Card and getting knocked out by the Bucs. I NEVER saw a division title coming at all, and I certainly didn't think they'd end up trading for 5 players who would all end up making big contributions towards a playoff push (Cespedes, Clippard, Reed, Uribe, Johnson) not to mention Michael Conforto coming up and tearing shit up from the get-go.

With all that's happened with this Met team there's no reason to not shoot for the moon and hope they can win it all. That being said whenever this playoff run ends I'll head into the offseason with my head held high. Such a fun year it's been.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-28-2015 01:48 PM

I fear that there's 7 games left, because there's a story in Jays folklore about something that happened with 7 games left. And also, they're against intense rivals Baltimore. Baltimore has a crap record, but much like Boston, pose a threat to anyone particularly at home. Hopefully, the boys keep their eyes on the prize. Big sweep over the Rays though, so at least they have momentum.

Evil Vito 09-28-2015 02:18 PM

 Nats suspend Papelbon for 4 games to go along with his 3 game suspension from the league, therefore ending his season. Fans are pledging money to charity in exchange for the team releasing Papelbon, meanwhile players that have been polled have indicated that they support Papelbon for going after Harper to "put him in his place".

What a trainwreck.

I don't understand this.

2013-14 offseason:
Tanaka - 7 years, $155 million
Ellsbury - 7 years, $153 million
McCann - 5 years, $85 million
Beltran - 3 years, $45 million
Gardner - 4 years, $52 million extension

Nearly $500 million in contracts given out in a single offseason. And then this past offseason they inked Miller for 4 years, $36 million which is big time money for a closer in addition to extending Headley for 4 years, $52 million.

When you look at the projected roster for next year there's not much room to spend lavishly. You have high-priced players at 7 positions (all 3 OF, 1B, DH, 3B, C) and Gregorious at SS. What does that leave to spend at, 2B? It wouldn't shock me if they went and signed Murphy from the Mets, that guy could hit 20-25 jacks with that porch. SP? I'm sure we'll hear them in play for Jordan Zimmermann or someone like that.

I don't think there's much question that they're willing to open up the wallet. But at a certain point it's fair to question whether it makes sense with all the money they've already got tied up. Keeping Severino, Bird, and Judge was 100% the right call.

Emperor Smeat 09-28-2015 06:30 PM

Probably more of a perception thing than the Yankees actually becoming cheapskate. They still give out big contracts but don't go all out like they did during the George Steinbrenner era. George's idea for fixing any problem was opening up the checkbook regardless of costs or if it was even needed since all he cared about was success.

Between them being public about lowering their luxury tax bill and other teams having no problems opening up their checkbooks, can see how Yankee fans could get worried about the future. That and their farm system being more in the middle of the pack which probably adds some more worries.

That was a MASSIVE problem with George....he felt ALL of MLB was his personal property, and likely threatened people, behind the scenes and off TV/social media, who stood up to him.

MLB would be a better league if the Steinbrenner Family had no involvement in the game at all.

parkmania 09-28-2015 09:02 PM

If the Pirates lose this game they only have themselves to blame. 5 LOB through 3 innings, including bases loaded with less than 2 outs TWICE and still ZERO runs. 0-6 with RISP through 5 innings.

Trying to figure out how the Red Sox are still mathematically alive in the Wild Card race even though Astros have 82 wins and the better head-to-head record.

Most the Sox can get is 82 wins so if Astros lose all their games left (and everyone else doesn't hit 82-83 wins), shouldn't the Astros still keep the Wild Card spot.

Wouldn't really call it collapsing since the 3 of them kind of just blew the whole year anyways.

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-29-2015 12:42 AM

Tho the Bo Sox are playing some pretty decent ball

Evil Vito 09-29-2015 09:52 AM

3 teams with their magic # at 2. Dodgers and Cardinals will clinch their divisions with wins tonight. Jays can clinch with a win and Yankees loss.

Entirely possible that the AL West will be the only unresolved division when the night is over. Rangers have just a 1.5 game lead over the Stros and 2 game lead over the Halos. That one could very well go down to the last day of the season.

ClockShot 09-29-2015 04:23 PM

Attempt #2 tonight for the Yankees to be the 7th team to join the 10,000 win club. And be the fastest to do so.

Evil Vito 09-29-2015 04:27 PM

And out of the blue it sounds like Steven Matz will be out for the rest of the season.

Well...I guess you can't be a Mets fan and expect any kind of prolonged happiness.

Evil Vito 09-29-2015 04:45 PM

LOL turns out Matz only slept awkwardly last night and will be pushed back a day or two for stiffness

man...the Mets beat writers are DREADFUL when it comes to bringing up injuries. there's a reason Sandy referred to them as the "citizens of Panic City" earlier this year

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-29-2015 10:41 PM

thank you Boston

Ol Dirty Dastard 09-30-2015 01:16 PM

KC was just woeful against Chicago lastnight. Chicago didn't seem like they gave a shot and IC could not make anything happen

Bad News Gertner 09-30-2015 06:24 PM

10-0 Jays in the 7th!!!!!! Division fucking champs!

Fuck, if the Jays didn't peak so early they would have won 100 games instead of only 95.

Bad News Gertner 09-30-2015 07:07 PM

Lol the O's are so horseshit, 13-1 Jays. Joey Bats with his 40th, Encarnacion with his 37th.

Jays could be the first team in AL history to have three 40 home run guys.

Bad News Gertner 09-30-2015 07:29 PM

DIVISION CHAMPIONS!!!!!! Holy fuck, I've waited 22 years for this!

Damn, these look good. =)

I had to order my Mets East is Ours shirt online today because Connecticut sucks a fat cock and I couldn't find the gear ANYWHERE. No way in hell Yanks gear wouldn't have been out day one if it was them that clinched.

Evil Vito 09-30-2015 08:18 PM

And frankly that East is Ours shirt might be the best I can get this year because Cespedes just got taken out of the game with what looked to be a bad hand injury after he got hit by a pitch.

Can't really see how they get past the Dodgers without him. He's been the heart and soul of the team during this playoff run.

ClockShot 09-30-2015 08:25 PM

Bob's is usually a good place to track down team gear. Found some good Yankees shirts there at good prices.

Attempt 3 for the Yanks tonight.

Evil Vito 09-30-2015 08:40 PM

Went to Bob's twice since they clinched. Not a damn thing. They even moved their Mets player shirts right to the entrance of the store but no playoff gear anywhere. Cunts.
