Very bad news concerning the status of Mega Man Legends 3 on the 3DS as Capcom dropped the game and all related news on the game from their website.

The same thing occurred with Mega Man Universe before Capcom officially pulled the plug on the project.

The project itself was on very shaky grounds due to the creator of Mega Man having to plead with the company to even have the project be given a "prototype" status due to Capcom's bosses not wanting to spend any time on a new MML game.

Once Inafune left the company, Capcom began to start the delays and eventual removal of the promised June demo from the 3DS eShop.

Dammit Capcom. I wanted a new MML so badly and all the stuff that came out was looking awesome and I could taste it. Was so bummed when the prototype was delayed and now... God.

Ah. Sweet.

I knew that would happen and I've been saying it all along. I knew they were phasing Megaman out.

No MM in MvC3, MMU gets cancelled, now MML3.

I don't think we'll see MM at all for a while now.

It sucks MML3 got cancelled because I love the MML series.

Weekend News Edition

Bungie officially ends its involvement with the Halo universe as the latest update on Bungie.net contained the final message by the studio in relations to the Halo series.

Quote:

Halo is yours now. In many ways, it always has been. Its new caretakers will strive, just as we did, to be worthy stewards but you have the package. Hold these characters and stories and worlds to the same unflinching standards you did while we were at the helm, but allow them all to blossom and change and grow in the ways that they must.
Bungie also confirmed they will be changing and reworking their main website as they complete their shift away from Microsoft and the Halo series to their new relationship with Activision and work on a new series' universe.

Microsoft celebrated their last involvement with Bungie Day by having special discounts on avatars and other items with the money being sent to charity.

Microsoft has been grooming 343 Studios to take over the Halo franchise ever since ODST was announced with the first big project being the remake of Halo 1.

Quote:

In addition to the armor unlock, Bungie Day saw the sale of memorabilia and Xbox Live Avatar items, with the proceeds going to charity. On Aug. 2 the studio will fully hand over all administration of Halo to its owner, Microsoft, releasing one last Halo ViDoc entitled "O Brave New Worlds." Then it will begin working on its next project.

"We'll be undergoing a metamorphosis of our own. Very soon Bungie.net will change, culminating with the launch of our next universe at some unknown time in the future," Bungie wrote in its latest weekly update.

Supposedly Donkey Kong turned 30 years old yesterday but the problem is nobody knows exactly which date the anniversary of the series occurs on. Not even Nintendo (specifically Nintendo of America) was aware of the anniversary possibly occurring yesterday.

Beta? Moar liek GAYta...Okay, I'll stop now.

The only thing I really liked about Halo was the espansive Universe. While I'm not a direct fan of ANY of it, it was still cool and far more developed than 90% of source material for games today. Mass Effect is cooler, but Halo really does deserve some props for being more than just a series of generic space shooters featuring gay space marines.

That fighting game is...Wrong. There's soemthing about the production value that makes it feel completely date. Like 90s date. I know it probably has more polygons and shit than a mid-90s game, but it has the same sort of vibe. The women look 2D, as well, something we figured out how to NOT do ages ago.

Capcom reveals a collection set is planned to celebrate Resident Evil's 15 Year anniversary for the PS3 in Japan.

All of the games are getting upscaled to PS3 resolutions but also only use PS1/PS2 as the source instead from versions with better quality.

Quote:

-Resident Evil Directors Cut (PSX)

-Resident Evil 2 (PSX)

-Resident Evil 3 Last Escape (PSX)

-Resident Evil Revival Selection (PS3)

-Resident Evil Code: Veronica soundtrack

-Resident Evil 4 soundtrack

-15th anniversary items: Pins & Stickers (STARS & Umbrella)

-Spacer for PS3′s Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition

-Spacer for PS3′s Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition
The set is said to be going on sale sometime in September and will come with a price tag of ¥7,800, which is roughly $97 American.
The set will not include Resident Evil 0 due to Nintendo owning rights to the game, any rail-style games, or spin-off games such as the Survivor series due to Capcom shutting off the servers for the series. Also not included is Resident Evil 4 which is getting a separate HD upscaled version set for release later this year.

As of now, Capcom did not give any news if the anniversary collection will be available on other systems or if the collection will be released in other regions. If other systems do get the set, it is expected to be different for each system.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) The tension between EA and Valve continues as EA updated all of their upcoming digital download games list and each game on the list has Steam left off with Battlefield 3 to be the recent to drop Steam. At the moment, the tension is high enough that neither company is willing to have talks or negotiations to end the situation.

2) Uncharted 3's developer Naughty Dog is very worried that their game's multiplayer could be completely overshadowed in terms of actual players and potential sales due to Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 being released around the same time.

3) Based on some early reports involving the upcoming Windows 8 O.S., Microsoft is planning to allow Xbox 360 games to be playable on a PC without the need for an actual Xbox 360 to be plugged into the PC.

Even by Windows 8, no way this will emulated the 360 architecture on a PC without a hardware add-on, unless it dynamically re-compiles. Even then, it would be a stretch.

Not that I care either way, because a bunch of COD faggots crying about anything kind of amuses me....

EA officially purchases PopCap studio and Jeff Green for an initial price $750 million with the potential of becoming $1.3 billion if certain milestones and criteria is reached.

The purchase gives EA access to the Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies IPs along with a huge preexisting network of both games and platforms covering a wide variety of services and consumers. It also reunites the company with their former employee who became the director of social media for PopCap studio.

Quote:

"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA's global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."

"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."
The move is seen as part of EA's stronger push into more of the casual and mobile markets to go along with their current focus on console gaming.

The zombies at PopCap decided to give EA a new greetings card welcoming them as the new bosses and owners of the company.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Blizzard announces starting on Season 3, StarCraft II will now have a new region linking setup to increase the pool of players possible for online matches. Europe will no longer be linked to North America while North America now links up with Latin America and Korea expands to include Taiwan.

2) Even though Bioshock's producer, Ken Levine, appeared in the Wii U press conference at E3 along with other developers, Levine stressed that his studio currently isn't involved in any Wii U projects nor has any slated for the near future.

3) Based on a memo from Gamestop, Sony might be removing another feature from the PS3 with the next reversion of the console to only allow HDMI cables to display HD signals while it was unclear if the Component Out connector will be removed or deactivated. The new models will not come with any HD-capable cables and Gamestop is preparing on increase the amount of HDMI cables available in stock before the new model goes on sale.

2K's boss reveals the real reason why the upcoming XCOM game was changed from a strategy game, like the previous games in the series, to a shooter was due to the company feeling of strategy games no longer being a part of modern gaming.

Before the company had hinted the decision was due to the large gap in years from the previous game and because the reboot was occurring on consoles instead of the more RTS-friendly PC platform. The reboot was also been seen as an attempt to see how popular the XCOM series would be to the current market.

Quote:

ccording to 2K's boss, the reason for this is simple -- strategy games just aren't relevant enough for these modern times.

"The 90s generation of gamers all love XCOM and we own the IP, so we thought okay, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it," said Christoph Hartmann. "But the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing -- strategy games are just not contemporary.

"... That’s what we are trying to do. To renew Xcom but in line with what this generation of gamers want. The team behind it is asking themselves every day: 'Is it true to the values of the franchise?' It’s not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing."
The boss also managed to completely ignore the hype and sales StarCraft II and other big name RTS games still have in the market with even Halo's own RTS game selling about a million copies.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Square-Enix hints it could be bringing Final Fantasy XI to the PS Vita but did stress it would only be a straight port of the game. The idea is to use the PS Vita game as an additional cash boost for their struggling and rapidly cash-eating Final Fantasy XIV MMO game.

2) Metacritic recent investigation into bribed review scores has resulted in the tagging of a bunch of review sources as "corrupt" after it was found out those places indeed accepted cash bribes in return for favorable scores on certain games.

3) Sony announces it is spending $20 million over the next 3 years as part of their current strategy to erase the huge advantage Xbox Live Arcade has in terms of the huge numbers of titles and exclusives available.

Gamasutra: This is one of the first examples we've seen from Capcom of the new strategy of putting existing IP onto Western studios and creating new IP from within the company. Could you talk about that strategy, what it means, and why it's interesting to you as creators.

Dragon's Dogma producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi: For us, we have the two strategies working simultaneously. There is, as you said, giving our famous franchises to other companies to see what they can do. We're always looking for new challenges for us at Capcom, and one of those is creating new IPs -- new franchises that will resonate with the fans. For us, we wanted to try something new, and that's why we developed this title internally.

We look at the other franchises as our children: we grow them, we raise them, and then we send them out to other companies and see what they can do with them. That gives birth to things like the new DMC, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and such.
And it's been a fucking mess so far.

Kinda absurd. To begin with, I was young during the 90's but I don't remember games like XCOM being all that popular. They were popular but I don't think the most popular. XCOM was very unique and customizable and that is why people loved it. Another shooter..yay? :wtf:

It looks like Capcom is trying to be like Nintendo with that strategy but the biggest difference is Nintendo is really good at determining which games work the best with a certain studio and design they want for the game.

Namco got Star Fox due to being good at flying games, Sega got F-Zero due to having experience with racers, Rare used to get the platformers, a few studios are good at doing RPGs, and Retro is great at creating a good tech engine for a game.

XCOM itself might not have been a huge name but RTS were big in the 1990s. The problem with what the boss said is how he suddenly thinks RTS style games are no longer considered "modern" but didn't give any real reason why.

Kalyx triaD 07-14-2011 04:21 PM

The division between Team Bondi and Rockstar grows even more after the lead programmer from Team Bondi's L.A. Nore project lashes out in a letter to the IGDA.

The letter both defended Team Bondi's management practices involving the disputed long hours while also lashing out at former employees and Rockstar who are upset at the studio.

Quote:

Recognising that working on the weekend was inevitable, Team Bondi put in place a scheme to (generously) reward employees for their weekend days spent at work. Additionally, in the last 6 months of the project a scheme was put in place to reward employees for staying back late on weeknights, and this resulted in myself and most of my team getting an additional 4 weeks of leave upon completion of L.A. Noire, on top of the weekend working payment.

... I can't say that no-one ever worked 100 hours per week, but those sorts of hours were not encouraged. In fact, if someone on my team was working that hard I would have done my best to stop them.
The letter also questioned the motives of former employees who have ben verbally attacking the company as either an attempt by those former workers to spread lies or even try to get Rockstar to shut down the studio.

Although the letter does not mention why those employees suddenly banded together to lash out at the company nor why Team Bondi decided to leave out almost 100 names from the credits list of LA Noire.

The letter does admit that some mistakes were made as is normal in any game development but also admitted that the studio works hard on finding and listening on ways to improve to both benefit its employees and future projects.

2) The lead gameplay designer for Mass Effect 2 and 3 leaves both EA and Bioware to join Riot Games as their new lead designer. This news comes only 24 hours after EA announced the creator of the NBA Jam series, Mark Turmell, has left to join Zynga.

3) Ubisoft is rumored to be the next company to join the Online Pass system with their pass being called "Uplay Passport" and will debut with the Driver: San Francisco game.

After realizing the complaints and outrage over their decisions concerning Resident Evil Mercenarines on the 3DS, Capcom is currently accepting suggestions and ideas from the fanbase of the series on how to better improve the Resident Evil series.

Some of the earlier suggestions given before the plea did help make some changes such as a return to the survivor horror theme with Revelations and implementing the long requested ability to move while shooting with Racoon City.

Although Capcom did mention that any suggestions and ideas taken would be used more for future Resident Evil games and not primarily for games currently in development.

Quote:

From Capcom's official Resident Evil Facebook page:

Let’s chat about upcoming Resident Evil games. We’ve introduced two new game concepts in Mercenaries and Operation Raccoon City, bringing back classics in RE4 and RE:CV, and going back to survival horror in Revelations. As a fan of Resident Evil, what do you think we’re doing right and what should we be working on?

2) Some bad news concerning the XBLA version of Tribes Ascend as Hi-Rez studio announced the XBLA version of the game has been delayed with all the focus being put on the PC version. Also revealed is the game will now be released first on the PC instead of simultaneously on PC and XBLA.

3) Microsoft and Sony might be doing another joint-project after it was revealed that Microsoft registered both Sony-Microsoft.com and Microsoft-Sony.com domain names. After listening to complaints both from reviewers and customers, the game will be less linear than FF 13 was and will have a lot less prerendered scenes. The goal is for the gameplay to be done mostly in an open-world real time setup.

To help boost the replay value for the sequel some new features and stuff are being added such as more variety for the mini-games and new gameplay experiences with the New Game+ option.

Even though it was not mentioned by Square-Enix but confirmed by those who have played previous builds of the game, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will have a lot of quick-time events to replace some of the prerendered action sequences.

Square-Enix also revealed the game will be playable at this weekend's Comic-Con expo alongside Deus-Ex: Human Revoltuion as the main games the company is showing off.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Gameloft is currently accused of illegal working practices after the former head of programming reveals how the company would routinely use the 100-hour work week for almost every project and faked deadline dates to get programmers to crunch more without overtime pay. The company even went as far as blaming the former employee as the scapegoat for all the illegal practices committed by the company.

2) Kojima says for the last time he has absolutely no interest in working on another game in the Snatcher series and would have no problem if another studio or company wanted to make a new game. He is willing to go as far as to give away the rights to the IP since he wants nothing to do with the series.

3) Cliff Bleszinski confirms Gears of War 4 will be made after hinting if Gears 3 sells well Epic Games will have no choice but to make another game. He didn't reveal if this means Gears 3 will end in a cliffhanger of if the potential Gears 4 would be a new storyline, spin-off, or prequel.

Its official, Capcom has killed off the development of Mega Man Legends 3 for the 3DS and also killed off ever releasing the completed "prototype" demo for the game as well.

Before the official announcement Capcom not only had delayed the release of the demo but also stopped work on the project while also removing all references of the game from their website.

Quote:

Neither the community-driven prototype or a final commercial product will be released, Capcom saying the progress made on the game did not meet "the required criteria" necessary for continued development.

Capcom can fuck right off with that bullshit they are pulling with MvC3. "Oh, buy the Ultimate edition and get 12 new characters and new costumes!"

Fuck that noise.

Activision confirms the rumors of a GoldenEye for the Xbox 360 and PS3 is indeed currently in development and it will be called GoldenEye Reloaded.

The game is a straight port of the Wii version with the only confirmed changes being upscaled graphics and the removal of motion controls. Nothing from the single player or multiplayer is being changed nor any special extras to separate it from the Wii version.

Activision will make the announcement official at Comic-Con this weekend alongside with videos of the remake and the possibility of playable demos.

It appears Nintendo had agreed to allow Activision to make a GoldenEye game for other consoles as long as they had the game first and had enough time to sell it as an exclusive. Also assumed is Nintendo still will not allow the N64 classic to be ported in any way to non-Nintendo systems.

More screens from the game are in the 2nd link.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) 2K Games delays The Darkness II from the original October 4 date to now a February 7, 2012 release date. No reasons were given for the delay but the company did mention more info will be available at Comic-Con this weekend.

2) Valve reveals they are currently working on a new system for Steam meant to make streaming and downloading faster. So far only HD trailers have been placed on the new system with the company still tweaking stuff before placing games on the faster servers.

3) Sony buys up another studio after announcing Double Eleven has been signed to work exclusively on PlayStation games with the first project being LittleBigPlanet on the PS Vita. Double Eleven was formed last year by former members of Rockstar's Leeds studio.

I got SF2T that added four characters and shit else. For 60$.

I think I can dig 40$ pseudo-sequels.

I'd mock Kalyx here, but for 40 bucks, this one seems fairly reasonable. especially compared to a lot of other capcom offerings of the past.

Funky Fly 07-20-2011 01:19 PM

It's a similar thing to Super Street Fighter 4.

UMvC3:
- 12 new characters
- 8 new stages
- new costumes (probably DLC tho)
- rebalancing
- presumably new moves
- new gameplay and spectator modes

SSF4:
- 10 new characters
- new costumes
- rebalancing
- new moves
- new gameplay and spectator modes

RoXer 07-20-2011 03:01 PM

What new spectator mode was in Super? The slightly refined replay system?

Kalyx triaD 07-20-2011 03:11 PM

Media Molecule in a developer conference today revealed how they had the chance to own the Portal series and how LittleBigPlanet originally could have been a Free-To-Play series.

The company revealed around 2005 they were working on trying to figure out how to make a game based on portals years before Valve released Portal. The game initially was called The Room and was shown in an early concept stage at a Game Developers Conference.

It turns out a studio called DigiPen used that same idea as inspiration and once Media Molecule found out, they started to have meetings with the studio to see if they could combine both projects. In the end, MM decided to abandon their project while DigiPen signed an agreement to work with Valve to eventually create Portal.

Quote:

"We worked on a project that actually was shown at GDC that year. It's lost, but if you dig through the GDC vaults there's this little game that never saw the light of day but that had a bunch of ideas in it."

"It was these clay cubes that you make things out of, and then put them through portals and do very trippy things," said Healey.
Also revealed that LittleBigPlanet could have been a Free-To-Play game had the studio not wasted the small window of opportunity (and Sony's money) working on videos trying to figure out how they wanted to design the game. Sony ended up being upset at nothing being done and changed the project into a retail release project.

Quote:

"Phil said all sorts of buzzwords that hadn't really hit yet. He said it should be driven by DLC and that it should be free-to-play, have a social core and premium, paid-for content. From that initial meeting Sony agreed to fund us for six months. But that time was primarily spent making videos to try to explain what this game was going to be, not to Sony, but to ourselves!"

Quick News Round-Up:

1) In a rare leak, Nintendo might have accidentally confirmed Gamecube games will be downloadable on WiiWare for the Wii U. One of the reps for the company in an interview accidentally leaked out Gamecube games being playable even though the system itself can't play GC discs.

2) In an update to yesterday's GoldenEye Reloaded news, Activision has confirmed the Xox 360 and PS3 will have extra stuff not found in the Wii version. Both consoles will increase the limit to 16 players for online matches and include a single player Mi5 Special Ops mode while only the PS3 will have motion controls as an option.

Kane Knight 07-20-2011 08:50 PM

Wii U mightbe worth it if I can DL SOAL and Rogue Squadron.

Kane Knight 07-21-2011 10:38 AM

On a side note, you can now own Harry Potter's Wand for your avatar. Five bucks.

And I thought Lightsabers were a tremendous rip-off.

It probably won't matter though since all of his games except No More Heroes 1 flopped this generation especially the ones he did for PS3 and Xbox 360. Even last generation I think only Killer 7 did any reasonable sales.

Some good and bad news concerning the anticipated Zelda concert shown at E3 2011 which is set to start touring later this year.

The good news is Nintendo announced the tour will be expanding outside of just the US and Canada as Europe and Japan will have their own set of shows. The first stop of the tour is on October 1 in Los Angeles with tickets set at a $35 price tag.

The bad news is Nintendo couldn't reserve other places in the US in time for the rest of the year so the tour will go on hiatus till 2012. No reason was given for the delay but most likely the places Nintendo wanted are already booked for the dates they requested.

Nintendo did announce that because of the delay after the 1st stop, it has given them more time to expand the concert tour to other countries.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) EA reveals the beta for Star Wars The Old Republic will start in September and will occur as a set of testing instead of an overall non-stop period like most betas are done.

2) Bad news concerning the insurance policy Sony gave out to PSN members as part of the Welcome Back program as one of the insurance companies (Zurich American) involved has already declined supporting the plan. The company is refusing to pay out any claims with the biggest issue revolving around the exceptions which let Sony off the hook and have the insurance company having to pay out or clean up any mess created by Sony.

Was still a lot more fun than any recent GH outings, I'll give him that.

Fignuts 07-22-2011 12:22 PM

Oh yeah, and apparently on that same panel that the darkstalkers teaser was shown, Ono mentioned wanting to bring back SF Alpha in some way. HD Street Fighter Alpha 3, or something like that, I am assuming.

Kalyx triaD 07-22-2011 12:26 PM

Actually he's been tweeting about doing Triple Upper, some new version of Alpha for a while. I doubt they'd want to HD it up but given that the assets still look great, all they need is the good old (cheap) smoothers and a rebalance/re-imagining of the engine. I'd buy that quick.

Probably, but as I've given a shit about neither recently, it's kind of a minimal thing.

Still masively gay to call it "fresh."
