Based on a series of leaks, Sony's NGP will be officially named the Playstation Vita (Vita means life in Italian) and PS Vita as the short name.

The leaks came due to a new domain for the developer website of the portable recently was registered as "vita.scedev.net" to go along with the previously registered NGP domain. Another source ended up being two blogs which had some ties to sources inside of Sony leaked more stuff about PS Vita but was taken down by Sony and forced to issue an apology.

According to some developers, the portable was never meant to be named NGP nor was that ever its codename because Vita was the actual codename with Sony also leaning it becoming the official name. The reason the NGP was leaked as the name is due to Sony forgetting to give an official name and told the press its name was NGP.

Quote:

I've talked to several developer sources, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, as E3 is so close. But each confirmed Vita was definitely the codename for the project when Sony was first showing the hardware to developers. One developer said his company has stopped referring to the machine as Vita, preferring NGP or PSP2, but was unclear if Vita had been dropped.

When Sony revealed its next portable in January, it was not supposed to have "NGP" attached, I'm told. Sony was unable to find internal consensus on a final name, so the event grudgingly went ahead with something temporary. At the time, however, it was being referred to internally as Vita.
Also leaked was Uncharted for the NGP will be named Uncharted: Golden Abyss and be hyped as the big title for the launch.

The official specs for the system are still unknown but based on recent reports, Sony has been removing and lowering some of the power for the cheaper model while keeping the regular specs for the more expensive model. The operating system, RAM, and CPU have been rumored to be cut by 50% while the harddrive rumored at 16 GB has been removed for the base model.

Sony's official stance regarding the leaks and the name is to not believe what is being posted on the internet but like every Sony leak that ends up real, the company also didn't deny the leaks were fake.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Square-Enix reveals Final Fantasy V and Chrono Trigger will be arriving on the US PSN at some time either in 2011 or 2012. This news comes months after Europe and Japan were confirmed to be getting both on PSN.
2) Sony's official response to Congress about the PSN hacking incident is the company has no clue who hacked them and doesn't believe any credit card info was stolen. This news contradicts previous statements by Sony to everyone saying they knew their credit card database was hacked into and they had some idea of which groups could have hacked them.
3) Nintendo and Sakaguchi confirms The Last Story on the Wii will be arriving in Europe in the near future and rumored to announce the actual date along with the US release at this year's E3.

G 05-30-2011 08:09 PM

How do you say that. Veeta or Vita. Both sound incredibly dumb, but so did the Wii at first.

Emperor Smeat 05-30-2011 08:25 PM

Vee-ta from what most people who speak Italian on gaming websites and forums are saying and not the older Latin version of Vi-ta.

It also appears to be related to cellphones being part of someone's "life" more than the Wii being part of playing games together to get the "we." Then again Sony originally marketed the PSP more as a handheld media device than a gaming handheld and only switched once developers started to bail and the iPhone/iTouch dominated media devices.

Fignuts 05-30-2011 09:17 PM

Already played Chrono Trigger about 68546546 times, and I can always just emulate the GBA FF V.

Random bit of trivia/history:

We all know that our SMB2 isn't actually the "real" SMB2 and is just a "re-skin" of a game called Doki Doki Panic. It turns out that's wrong.

Miyamoto was working on SMB2, which he had already announced/promised publicly. Our SMB2 was what he was working on and it was always going to be SMB2 until Nintendo got the rights to quickly make a game based on an anime.
As SMB2 was the only game close enough to completion at that time, they threw out Mario and stuck in the Doki Doki characters.

The Japanese SMB2 was quickly thrown togethor and put on sale while we got SMB2 as it was intended.

Fallout Online, Earthworm Jim 4, and three other projects by Interplay are closer to being cancelled than becoming a reality as the company announces it is currently facing severe financial problems.

In a filing to the SEC, Interplay posted a $2.9 million debt with just $3,000 in its cash reserves with the worst news being the loss of its credit card deal to help fund the projects. The company itself does not have enough money to pay its employees in advance but will now pay them based on revenue-shares for completed games, if they get completed.

The legal issues surrounding Fallout Online between Interplay and Bethesda contributed significantly to Interplay's financial problems and cost the company more money than was expected to make in revenues.

Interplay was also placed on a high risk of liquidation and bankruptcy with the company possibly selling off most of its assets to continue operating and finishing its projects. The company already has cancelled or dropped most of its projects with only 5 being worked on at the moment

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Sony confirms PSN Store will not be up by their most recent deadline of May 31/June 1 and now has "end of the week" (June 3/4) as the new deadline date.
2) Nintendo drops the price of the DS Lite to $99 as part of the final phase of the system's life and to clear out all the remaining stockpiles to make more room for the 3DS.
3) Syphon Filter 4 appears to be currently in development after Sony accidentally posted some info and a logo for the game on its Playstation blog before quickly taken down all the stuff.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to play fallout with other people?

Drakul 06-01-2011 04:21 PM

I don't really like playing any game online if it means co-oping with random people. If I'm going up against them, great. Otherwise, no.

Random thing on another topic but if you listen to videogame music in Windows Media Player and right click the play button to slow the music down, a lot of VG music still sounds pretty good.

A lot of the character themes from MvC3 work. Viper, Dante and Sentinals, for example, along with the Duke Nukem Forever version of the Duke Nukem theme sound like they'd be used for heel wrestler entrance themes when slowed down.

Captain Americas theme slowed down doesn't sound very "heel wrestler" but it still sounds cool. Sounds slightly "end credits"-like.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Based on a leaked box art from EA Store that was quickly taken down, Mass Effect 3 will be using Kinect controls to go along with the series regular controls.
2) THQ reveals Darksiders 2 is in development and is set to arrive on the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3. THQ also announced the game will be bigger in size, more openess for exploration, more upgrades, and a new character named Death as the main character of the game.
3) After delaying and rejecting a few Aliens projects, Sega finally confirms Aliens: Colonial Marines will be arriving next year and Gearbox is the studio developing the game. The game is not expected to have any tie-ins to the expected Aliens film also set to arrive in 2012.
4) XBLA exclusive Crimson Alliance announced by developer Certain Affinity with a release date expected during Summer 2011. The game is set as a class-based RPG and allows both local and online co-op play. The studio said its past work on Halo and Call of Duty map packs were influential in the design and gameplay process.

Ubisoft reveals a new Rainbow Six game is in development but this time it is a remake or retelling of the original Rainbow Six game. Similar to how GoldenEye for the Wii was a retelling of the N64 game, Ubisoft is doing the same with the new Rainbow Six game.

The game will take place primarily in New York with the villains being home-grown terrorists upset at Wall Street. The story is also revealed to be more in depth than the typical Tom Clancy game and more similar to a cinematic presentation.

Gameplay-wise, the remake will drop most of the gameplay style from Vegas and other Rainbow Six games and return to the classic tactical and stealth shooter of the early games.

The cover system from Vegas will be kept as a way from switching between first and third person perspectives.

Ubisoft did not announce if more of the game will be shown at E3 but at the moment very unlikely. They also didn't announce which systems the game will arrive but based on the on-screen prompts, a PC and Xbox 360 version should be available.

2) The Witcher II has been confirmed to be arriving on the Xbox 360 as an exclusive title.
3) Sony once again trashes a Nintendo system this time saying the NGP/Vita has no real competition in both handheld and phone devices and calls the 3DS just as a simple "updated" DS.
4) Team Ninja released some screens for Ninja Gaiden III which could hint the game taking place in London or for part of the story based on some signs in the background. The game is also about 30% done according to the company.
5) No hope for a Sheamue III coming any time soon as the creator of the series has left Sega and revealed his studio is currently working on a new Kinect Fighting game.

EA announces it is competing against Steam for the PC digital distribution market as it announces its own DD service and puts the upcoming Star Wars Old Republic MMO game as an exclusive for the service. However, at the moment EA has not cut all ties with Steam for their previous PC games.

The service is being named Origin and is EA's attempt to take on Steam in the PC market while also expanding their own presence in the PC market after ignoring PC games for years in favor of console games. The name comes from a past EA purchase of a company called Origin Systems which was a big name developer for PC games in the 1980s and 1990s.

As part of their plan to be Steam's rival, EA announced as of now they have 150 titles ready for launch and will offer exclusive collector/limited edition of PC games similar to console versions having their own special editions. Battlefield 3, FIFA 12, and a few others were revealed in getting the exclusive PC collector's editions.

The store and overall structure of the service mimics a lot from Steam but also provides for mobile service which is something Steam doesn't do for the store. EA will also tie its mobile games into the new service for easier access to the Origin service.

EA is expected to reveal more of the new digital distribution service along with more games and "exclusive" features at E3 this year.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Team ICO HD remake set given a price and release date for Japan and it could be some bad news if Sony keeps the same price structure. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are not an actual set but can be bundled together with a $50 price per game and $87 price together in Japan.
2) Take Two clears up some potential worries involving X-Comm reboot by announcing the game has a March 6, 2012 release date and the project is progressing well in development.
3) Sony could be going back on their promise to make the NGP/Vita cheap after continuing explaining how they feel customers will be willing to pay the price the company has for the handheld and how all the crammed features make owning a 3DS or mobile device not needed. As of now, only the non-3G model is getting its specs and stuff lowered down.

Nintendos next console's controller gimmick has been basically confirmed by Nikki, Japan's trade newspaper.

Of all the dumped so far, it confirms the 6" touchscreen, camera and the fact that it can actually be used as a stand-alone console.

Drakul 06-04-2011 03:53 AM

Maybe it'll be like that thing Kojima is doing with MGS:PW. You play it on the PS3, transfer the data to your PSP, play it on PSP when you're out and about and then transfer it back to your PS3 when you get home.

Knowing Nintendo, they would likely put something like that in a game. Rare items only found by going outside with your controller or something.

So they're going to remake the original Rainbow Six with a completely different story in a completely different setting? How is that a "remake"/"retelling"

I mean the first game's story is uber dated since it;s about the 2000 Olympics in the end but still.

Emperor Smeat 06-04-2011 07:15 PM

Besides the change of location and the target being Wall Street, Ubisoft didn't mention a whole lot on the story itself or how the changes still make it resemble Rainbow Six 1 and not an original game.

If its anything like GoldenEye for the Wii, they might change around some of the places and order the missions take place but also kept most of the actual story unchanged. In this case, Ubisoft might keep the story still being the debut of the Rainbow team and the virus as the main problem.

It actually has 2 with one in the front and one in the back but yeah Sony has a really bad habit of trashing someone and then using or copying the same stuff while saying its the best thing ever (ex. PS Move, connectivity between handheld and console, touch screen).

EA reveals Mirrors Edge 2 could potentially either use the same Frostbite 2 engine Battlefield 3 is currently using or at least a modified version by the time the game is actually ready for display.

Quote:

EA Games President Frank Gibeau has all but confirmed that we'll eventually see Mirror's Edge 2 running on Frostbite 2, telling Gametrailers that "you'll see that combination, I'm sure".

"We haven't killed Mirror's Edge," continued Gibeau. We're actively looking at how to bring it back in the right way. We love that franchise. The DICE guys really created something I think special the first time around. You've got to have a big idea to be able to do the next one and that's what we're working on."
Due to EA using Battlefield 3 as their main hype game this Fall and DICE currently busy just working on the game itself, it is very unlikely more info on a possible Mirror's Edge 2 would be released any time this year or before the next E3.

As of now, the game is in limbo status where it hasn't been confirmed to be in real development nor given a cancellation notice even though EA promised the series won't be done with just one game.

2) If the lack of new titles or games felt missing at E3 this year, a few studios have confirmed they are bringing a lot more games and info to this year's Tokyo Game Show than usual. Nintendo is expected to fully detail the Wii U console itself after "neglecting" it at E3 in favor of the controller.
3) IBM reveals the same sort of technology that powered the Watson supercomputer is inside the Wii U with the chip size, a modified version of the Watson CPU and the RAM types being similar.
4) If Naughty Dog are correct, Sony is considering making the PS4 into a social and media center as part of the wider push to expand the Playstation brand to other Sony products.

It's cool to go for IG but there's no way you'll get it on XBLA with out some serious money, I'd assume.

Kalyx triaD 06-09-2011 06:48 AM

We could try to get a publisher behind us that would make things easier, but I have strong feelings against this. Idea's not even on the table, 'over my dead body' and all that. But the full realized vision of these games, even conservative versions of them, are kinda ambitious. For the most part I consider XNA releases to be betas/proof of concepts.

There used to be a system for getting a game upgraded from IG to XBLA, with leaderboard support, achievements, and more. It disappeared (or was moved) when XNA was rebooted and Microsoft re-prioritized indy games in general. Probably dropped. Bummer.

Drakul 06-09-2011 06:58 AM

Getting a publisher to back you is near impossible nowadays. They don't take ideas from "no bodys". You have to have qualifications in certain areas and probably actually be working for them before they even look at it.

In the 80's in the UK, you could send your ideas to publishers and get them made into games but not now.

Your best bet to get on XBLA is to enter the Doritos contest they seem to do each year.

A few years ago I did some language translation for a small group of guys who had worked for some bigger video game companies and wanted to go rogue. They were working on some projects. Nearly impossible to get support from anyone. Taking into account that the people who were part of this group had come from well established companies and had many years of experience.

According to a few sources at the E3, Activision's CEO Bobby Kotick was kicked out of EA's Battlefield 3 booth after he supposedly wanted to check out the competition for Modern Warfare 3.

Supposedly the incident occurred while EA was holding a closed door demonstration of the game and Kotick or a representative for him asked if it was possible for a private screening of the game which EA's rep in the booth refused. Kotick was also rumored to have been escorted away from the closed screening when EA found out he was at the booth.

EA's rep for the booth has confirmed the incident took place while Activision is denying Kotick was at the EA booth or made the request.

Battlefield 3 is still set for an October 25 US release and October 28 European release date while Modern Warfare 3 is set for a worldwide date of November 8.

E3 Quick News Round-Up:

1) After some confusion regarding Fable: The Journey, Peter Molyneux stresses the game itself is not on rails even though it uses Kinect as a control option and the demo appeared to be a guided experience.
2) Ubisoft reveals Assassin's Creed: Revelations will have a November 15 release date for this year.
3) Sega confirms they are still working on Sonic 4: Episode 2 even though they had no footage or details of the game during their time at E3.
4) If the European branch of Sony is correct, PS Vita should be region free just like how the PSP and PS3 were the same.
5) Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (WiiU) will use an optional control scheme to go along with regular controls similar to the DS Ninja Gaiden game in terms of the touch screen being used to throw stars, attack with the sword, and move Ryu.

The lack of Alan Wake news at E3 was explained by Remedy Studios who explained that the project itself hasn't been approved by Microsoft. Original leaks had the game being set as a downloadable title being called Alan Wake: Night Springs.

Apparently Microsoft was unaware the project was being worked on and only learned of the project being in development after leaks about the game started to hit the internet. By the time Microsoft knew of the project, it was too late for them to add it as part of their E3 press conference due no press package being completed for the game at the time.

While Microsoft owns the IP, Remedy Studios has been working on the XBLA game for a while and wanted to get as much of the game done before requesting funding from Microsoft and having Microsoft started to make changes to the project.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Spanish police arrest 3 members belonging to the splinter group of Anonymous that was behind the PSN attacks after they hacked into government websites and databases.
2) Rage has been delayed with the new release date of October 4 by id Software as a way to push it out of the same launch window of Gears 3 and before the Modern Warfare 3 launch.
3) Sony hints that after receiving developer feedback on using Vita for connectivity on the PS3, they will also try to mimic a lot of stuff from the recently unveiled Wii U controller. Specifically, the idea of the screen having its own stuff separate from the tv (ex. maps, menus, etc).

As part of Microsoft's strategy for both the Kinect and prolonging the Xbox 360's life, Microsoft revealed the next step of the plan is for mandatory support for the Kinect in the future for all first-party Xbox 360 games.

Microsoft admitted it would be much easier for them to do it than making another demand for Xbox 360 games to third-party studios. They already have the demands of every Xbox 360 must have a gamerscore, Xbox Live, and HD abilities.

As of now, Microsoft appears to be leaning on voice commands as the main thing to use for Kinect rather than its other features. They feel this enhances their games a lot more than the other aspects of Kinect and would be more favorable and marketable to Xbox 360 users and potential new users.

EA is also considering pushing Kinect as a huge feature for their multi-platform games and could be moving away from heavy PS3 support to go back to heavy Xbox 360 support like in the begining of the generation.

Quick News Round-Up:

1) Epic Games the latest video game company to suffer a hacking attack after Code Masters was attacked a few days ago and Sony over the past few months. The attack occurred on Epic Games forums with several e-mail addresses and passwords stolen including the master/admin one for the forum.
2) In response to a 2nd hacking attempt on Nintendo's severs, Nintendo of Europe has closed down its Club Nintendo services until it resolves the "phishing" attempt done to them.
3) Another attack to PSN and Sony is expected to be occurring in the near future with the main group boasting at the moment they have access to the PSN database and will be willing to prove Sony wrong about the new PSN being secured. As of now, between 17-19 Sony related websites and services have been attacked since the initial one to PSN.

According to demos and reactions at E3 for Ninja Gaiden 3, the game is very heavy into quick-time events going so far as being found in regular moves and attacks.

The QTE's are primarily used for killing off foes and making the blood flow non-stop but also appear in a lot of context-sensitive situations and traditional combos/specials.

The other new feature from the demo is Ryu Hayabusa's mutilated arm plays a big role in certain killing attacks and action but has a limit to the amount of carnage possible. The arm can be recharged at any time so it is possible to create countless spamming of the moves although the demo version might have had no limits or counters to the amount of times it can be done.

Another major change from previous games in the current series is instead of constant free flowing action, there appears to be a lot more "scripted" moments and kills making the game feel more similar to the God of War series than the previous Ninja Gaiden games.

Tecmo has mentioned in the past that they wanted to take the series into a new direction and the 3rd game in the series would be seen as a "reboot" in a certain sense.

2) Capcom confirms Dead Rising 2: Off the Record will be priced at a discount of $40 similar to SSFIV being a "discount" title. This game is essentially Dead Rising 2 but with Frank West instead of the previous main character.
3) Crytek announces they will be porting their engine over to the Wii U and says they already have the engine working. This news comes right after Epic Games confirmed they are also porting the Unreal Engine 3 and will provide games for the system.

Here's hoping this coming generation addresses hardware failure rates. Blowing dust of a cartridge is a minor inconvenience. Having to send in a console for repair and either deal with atrocious customer service or pay out the ass for shipping/cost of the fix is ridiculous.

The MS console is probably going to be rushed out to compete with Nintendo and beat Sony. Sega reckon the U will be out by spring/summer next year and this new XBox will probably be Winter 2012.

I don't believe Crytek's supposed "release" for Wii U. And it's Microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised if that actually happened.

Emperor Smeat 06-14-2011 06:19 PM

With all the news of Sony probably not going all out on a PS4 like they did with the PS3, I wouldn't be surprised if MS went all out on their next console since they still have a huge chunk of the original $18 billion they set aside for the Xbox brand when they first announced the original Xbox.

Sony can't do the same since they can't keep tossing around money while their divisions keep declining profits-wise and already decided to do another "eating" the losses this time with Vita to compete with Nintendo and Apple.

If Crytek are right about already have a working version of the engine for the Wii U and a previous poll done by Free Radical while ago showed there was some serious interest on putting a TS4 version on a Nintendo console (Wii at the time).

Bungie launches their Bungie App today and also stated it was the start of a bigger project as the studio continues its transfer away from the Halo series with Microsoft and 343 Studios to their new project with Activision.

Even though neither Bungie nor Activision revealed anything about the current project called Destiny at E3, Bungie did confirm the game is still on schedule and in development.

Bungie's app as of now only keeps track of stats in Halo Reach but the studio revealed it will be expanded more over time and is part of their current attempt to expand into the mobile market for both games and apps. Bungie plans to treat their new app the same as they do with their Bungie.Net website with constant news, updates, and special stuff every once in a while.

Bungie's other current project called Bungie Aerospace is expected to be revealed in detail during this year's Bungie Day festival during June 23 to July 7.

Sony could be in huge trouble with the Japanese government and possibly the US government/FBI after the Japanese report showed Sony knew even earlier than originally revealed that their databases were hacked and information was stolen.

Sony's original stance was they had no clue when their servers had been hacked and if any information was compromised.

Sony even considered just ignoring telling PSN users their email and passwords were taken if the attack didn't also go after the actual credit card and other sensitive personal info on the servers.

Quote:

The report, submitted to the Japanese government and obtained under a freedom of information request, says that SCE was able to confirm internally on April 25 (American time) that a "fairly large amount of data" had been exposed to hackers. A press release issued the next day, however, only stated that Sony could not "rule out the possibility" that personal information had been compromised.

It's also claimed that PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai gave incorrect information in a statement issued on May 1, in which he said Sony didn't learn about the extent of the attack until April 26 (American time), a full day later than the company confirmed matters internally.

The official document also says that Sony delayed informing the public of the extent of the breach so as not to "bewilder" its customers, a spokesperson saying "We hadn't figured out (at that time) what kind of data had been leaked. If only passwords and IDs (were breached), they cannot be considered personal information, and so we didn't want to bewilder our customers."

In a move that might have fueled the potential EA-Valve digital distribution war, Crysis 2 and other recent games published or developed by EA were taken off of Steam today.

This move contradicts EA earlier statements saying they would not be removing their games from Steam but work as a partnership of sorts along with their own Origin service.

EA also later updated reports of the removal by trying to blame Valve for the sudden removal of the games but EA also showed they have no intention of reuploading the games at the moment.

Quote:

"It’s unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more."
Older games published by EA such as Need For Speed and Crysis 1 are still on Steam but the future of those games could be in doubt should EA decided on a complete withdrawal from Steam.

Valve and Crytek haven't responded to the removal but it is assumed Crytek's games were removed without their knowledge or permission.
