Bad News Gertner 03-12-2014 04:30 AM

I also like Daniel Bryan but think he'd be a horrible choice for a top guy.

Certain guys work in certain roles.

How is this so hard to understand?

It is extremely hard to understand. It is extremely hard to understand why a guy should be relegated to the mid card when millions of people across the country, both hardcore IWC fans and casual fans, are going absolutely apeshit for the guy, and giving him pops and reactions not seen since the Austin era.

More people owned One Warrior Nation t-shirts than want to keep Bryan from the main event.

What is so hard to understand about capitalizing on something that's hot? Gertner has said it a million times. They're a fucking business. And they'd have to be brain dead fucking idiots not to get as much out of this guy as possible.

I could understand you making this arguement way back during the Team Hell No phase of his career, but now? the fuck are you thinking?

#1-norm-fan 03-12-2014 05:25 AM

How is making the man the star of the show capitalizing on it? He's doesn't have mass appeal. The whole "Yes movement" doesn't get stronger if they try to make him the face of the company. He's over regardless and they're not gonna stop watching as long as he's somewhere on the card being relevant. At that point it comes down to who do you want to promote and build as the headlining attraction to draw people in. He's just not very good outside of his in-ring skills. Neither was Benoit. But he was great in his role as long as he wasn't presented as THE guy.

If it were up to the majority of the Bryan marks. John Cena would have been jobbing for most of his career by now. There's a reason that hasn't happened. Cena is a guy you use as your main star. Bryan is not.

#1-norm-fan 03-12-2014 05:34 AM

Not to mention that smile he constantly has on his face is annoying and heelishly creepy.

Fignuts 03-12-2014 05:37 AM

Whoever said he was going to be THE guy?

That's Cena, and it will still be Cena even if Bryan wins the title. Comparing Bryan to Benoit is absurd. Benoit was never this hot. Saying he's over regardless so don't bother is a ridiculous argument. You could say that about anyone who's ever been over. If people are clamoring this hard for a guy to be on top, then you push him to sell tickets.

#1-norm-fan 03-12-2014 05:49 AM

And that's the problem with giving him the title. It should be reserved for THE guy or someone who has potential to be THE guy. That's how you make the title a meaningful draw instead of a useless prop.

And the Benoit comparison works. It doesn't matter that Benoit was AS over as Bryan is at this very moment. I'm comparing them talent-wise. The whole "Yes movement" thing isn't gonna last forever. Once that's gone, you've got a little guy who looks like you signed off a Bum Fights video representing your company as it's champion.

That works for ROH, a company that wants to appeal to wrestling nerds and never actually grow and become a bigger deal. Not WWE.

Fignuts 03-12-2014 05:56 AM

Then there'd only just be like 2 guys who ever win the title.

So what what if it doesn't last forever? Get what you can out of it now while he's drawing big.

James Steele 03-12-2014 06:06 AM

WWE needs to try and reach new demographics, and Daniel Bryan reaches a demo that WWE has never catered to before - hipsters, vegans, environmentalists, etc.

James Steele 03-12-2014 06:07 AM

WWE will always have guys who cater to the "pop culture loving flavor of the month supporting douchebags" demographic.

SlickyTrickyDamon 03-12-2014 06:10 AM

Half way through I guessed who was going to be the bad guy. They did do a good job at throwing a fake trail though. Still better than Ready to Rumble.

If you can only build up 2 guys to that level, then yeah. See Hogan and Savage/Warriors brief runs in the late 80's/early 90's. Or you can build up more than just 2 at a time. See Austin/Rock/Taker/HHH in the late 90's. You're not limited to 1 or 2 at a time.

And again, they aren't gonna get any more out of it. The merchandise and shit is all based on him NOT winning the title in fact.

"Getting what you can out of it" = Making him your champion is such a narrow, simplistic way to look at it.

He'll win the title at WrestleMania and he pretty much has to. It's not because Bryan as champion is gonna be a huge cash cow and milk more out of the "Yes movement" or anything though. It's because they've booked themselves into a spot where he's gotten screwed out of it most of the year and the two guys who were in the main event spot, one's a heel and the other didn't get nearly the adoration they were expecting when he returned and they had to turn him heel too. And the only other available face to put in the match to fix the situation so smarks didn't shit all over a Batista-Orton main event walked out of the company.

James Steele 03-12-2014 06:38 AM

...or they could potentially re-create the heat and buzz of Austin vs McMahon as he finally wins the title only to get screwed out of it in a few months and we begin the chase cycle again and rinse and repeat until the next new babyface is ready.

#1-norm-fan 03-12-2014 07:00 AM

We already saw how the PPV numbers for Bryan chasing the title were the first time. Kinda lends to my point that the people who will pay to see Bryan fight for the title are wrestling nerds who already pay to see him period. Outside of that his appeal is incredibly limited. WWE does not need to be more like ROH. Basically, Batista is right.

To be fair, it's a story about a bunch of guys with a tv show.

Yes. But I never found myself concerned with the ratings Breaking Bad was getting, or the box office for Avengers or whether Joffrey was ready to "go over" Ned.

Swiss Ultimate 03-12-2014 07:18 PM

I'm in agreement though. I like what I like, regardless of how well rated it is.

However, part of the story is that it is all interactive and that the ratings can sometimes come into play in the story. I can imagine a Heyman promo talking about all the fans the WWE lost whenever Bryan main-evented, all the money they wasted on him and etc. etc.

Would be great to see Bryan snap on the Yes-lock until Lesnar came out.

I don't like or dislike it because of ratings and such. I like or dislike it... and the ratings/buyrates go to back up why I'm not alone and why they should/shouldn't do things.

Basically it's "I find this to be a shitty idea. The fact that it doesn't help them business-wise shows that."

Actually there is a part of me that does care about ratings. I mean... I want WWE to grow as a respectable company (I know, lol) and not strive to be more like ROH.

From a storyline purpose I've said that at this point, they've lead it to where to even try having Batista be the man going into WrestleMania to fight for the title alone was ridiculous and they HAVE to have Bryan win it now.

The story is fine. The endgame with the WWE champion being a homeless looking guy who is mediocre at best on the mic, not so much.

Eventually Punk turned instead and then Sheamus fell backwards and then got hurt. Also surprising is Batista is not on the list. An article in Bloomberg.com listed that the WWE had talks with AMC Networks Inc., Viacom Inc., Time Warner Inc., and 21st Century Fox regarding negotiations for domestic TV rights. Talks only mean something if an offer is made. AMC is an interested one. Due to "Walking Dead," AMC is now a top five station. Viacom would be for Spike, which confirms what I'd felt for a long time was a logical business move, and also explains why Spike hasn't renewed TNA's contract that is up at the same time the WWE deal is up with NBC Universal. Time Warner would be for TBS and TNT. For what it's worth, I'm aware of a wrestling proposal to that company very recently where they said that they had no interest in wrestling again. Still, that doesn't rule out WWE. Fox would of course be to help build FS 1, and put UFC and WWE on the same station. George Barrios, the CFO of WWE, said he expected the new deal to be announced at the end of April or early May.

In the key demo of males 18-49, Raw peaked between 10:02 and 10:12 p.m. EST for the meat of Bryan's "Occupy Raw" bit setting up Hunter accepting a WrestleMania match.

Numerically, the Q9 segment at the top of the third hour averaged 1.747 million m18-49 viewers and scored a 2.78 demo rating. This grew on last week's show-high Q9 performance of 1.620 million viewers and 2.57 rating.

Over-run: Raw increased to 1.534 million viewers for Bryan & Show vs. Orton & Batista. The segment was up from 1.429 million viewers for last week's over-run, but last week's segment included a rare mid-overtime commercial.

Q5: Raw got a 26 percent top-of-the-hour bump to 1.494 million viewers for The Undertaker returning and Paul Heyman confronting him, plus one commercial. The segment peaked with 1.700 and 1.701 million viewers before the commercial.

Q7: Raw rebounded to 1.484 million viewers for the end of the tag match, one commercial, and a Divas tag match.

Q1: Raw opened with a measly 1.081 million viewers for Hulk Hogan opening the show, John Cena interaction, and Wyatt Family interruption.

Q2: Raw dipped to a show-low 1.021 million viewers for Cena vs. Erick Rowan, plus two commercial breaks.
The Occupy segment's peak was around 1.92 before it started to drop. Also this week being the rare time that the 3rd hour wasn't the weakest overall.
