The Monuments Men - 6.5/10
Was much more engaging/interesting reading the book |
The Frozen Ground-7/10
Suspense film where Nic Cage tries to chase and pin down years of missing girls and recovered dead bodies to John Cusak, while also trying to keep his star witness Vanessa Hudgens safe from being taken out of the picture. A nice reminder that despite no longer being big names, Cage and Cusack are still good at what they when given the right material. Aftermath-6/10 Arnold plays a grieving family man who loses his family in terrible plane crash after air traffic controller Scoot McNairy makes a costly mistake. This wasn't bad. It was just too short. Not enough time is spent on Arnold to get you to invest in his character arc. McNairy'd character gets better development even though he's not the main character. Bad Day For The Cut-8/10 An unassuming Irish farmer wakes up to find his mother brutally murdered. He escapes murder himself and sets out to avenge his mom and all the while discovers truths about his mother that paint her in a different light. The Plagues of Breslaugh-8/10 A detective tormented by the loss of her fiance years earlier ends up on a case where the perp pass killing seemingly random people in gruesome ways while carving different labels into each victim, like "slanderer". |
The Frozen Ground is based on a true story so enjoy looking that up if you haven't yet. I really loved it when I first saw it, it's about as tense as a film can get and for once John Cusack plays to his strengths. I never liked him as a leading man, he has turned into an excellent antagonist though. See "Never Grow Old" for more Cusack in high level heel territory.
Cage and Cusack are still big names though, they just aren't blockbuster leading man material anymore. |
And "A Bad Day For The Cut" is essentially a perfect indie film and the very essence of why independent cinema has to exist. It has the purity that no Hollywood film will ever have.

The Outpost-8/10
Wall to wall banger of an army unit stuck for months in an outpost buried at the bottom of a mountain, constantly under attack by Taliban forces, who eventually move to take over the compound with an all out assault. |
Ava - 6.5/10
Jessica Chastain plays an assassin, whom after a bad job, is targeted by her own organisation; sub-plot revolves around her mending fences with her sister and mother after not seeing them for 8 years and her past as an alcoholic. Fairly average action film. Personally, I think Jessica Chastain is wasted in action films. |
Did you watch it for Jessica's Chastains?
|
I do love a bit of Jessica Chastain.
|
I bet she plays yet another joyless robot.
She is a mediocre talent in her preferred roles. |
American Pie Presents: Girls Rule - 3/10
Why did I bother watching this? Dunno. Just because I watched all the other bad spin-offs I guess. Spoiler: no boobs were shown so what is even the point |
No boobs?!
That's not American Pie. American pie always has boobs. |
American Pie 2 made me laugh so hard that people in the screening were looking over at me and tutting.
|
Midnight Special-8/10
Michael Shannon is in it, which should be enough. He and Kirsten Dunst have a son withseemingly super natural powers, and they're on the run from the government trying to get their son to where he thinks his destiny awaits. The Trial of the Chicago-8/10 7 progressive protesters and the leader of the black panthers are put on trial by the current USAG in an attempt to be made an example of after protesting and riots broke out a yr earlier before and during the democratic national convention. |
The Mortuary Collection on Shudder. Perdy good...anthology kind of like Creep Show. Clancy Brown stars
|
I havent seen it yet as it doesnt come out until tomorrow but im gonna go ahead and give Tremors 7 an 11/10.
|
Dracula: Dead And Loving It - 3/4
If this was called "Renfield" it would have a good rating. Peter MacNicol is funny as fuck. |
House Party - 3/4
I'm a big fan of comedy with real heart behind it and this was a film I tried to buy on DVD many times growing up only to be dissuaded by the literal packaging of the dvd. Bright yellow with a guy who's hair defies science?! I already own BTTF. "Black America" is a hugely weird concept in film. It's acknowledging its own minority status but appealing to an immense audience. House Party is one of the real efforts, it isn't blaxploitation. It's giving a few minutes to a very real moment in time. Glad it was as good as I hoped, sad it wasn't given full marketing. |

He was constantly hilarious in an otherwise funny film. This fella headlined in Sophie's Choice.
|
Leslie Nielsen was great though. So out-funnying him was purely based on performance.
An earned, deserved win for MacNicol. Also just between you and me there was a good bit of cleavage in that film. Busty. |
Yeah, watched it recently and appreciated that fact.
|
Also when I was a kid watching the movie I had no idea what an enema was so that pretty much went over my head (but I still remember finding it funny just due to the delivery)

Peter MacNicol was also gold in Ally McBeal.

Skyscraper - 47%
This movie is straight asshole. How can you have a deadly conflict 2,000 feet in the air and not feel any sort of concern for the main characters safety Should’ve just been on the 2nd floor. Same difference |
Batman: Mask of Phantasm - 7/10
|
free solo
it's cool, but more stressful than watching the guy climb was the obviously strained relationship he had with his gf... did not sit well with me |
Tremors 7 ended up being about an 87 out of 10.
|
Didn't know there was a new one
|
Ghost Ship 5/10
Fairly duff, but not unwatchable. |

The channels were like that for a few days, my birthday was the next day and Diana dying pretty much wrecked it. I don't even remember what I did, I just remember thinking I was playing second fiddle to some dead bird. Princess Diana never done nothing for me! |
Borat Subsequent Movie Film - 8/10
It's hilarious and super offensive, exactly what you'd expect. The actress who plays his daughter, Maria Bakalova, steals almost every scene she's in - She's hysterical. |

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - 7/10
|
It was pretty damn funny
|
It was ok. Not as good as the original and not even as good as Bruno. Not sure why everyone is all over the actress. She's fine but other than the dance scene and the Rudy stuff its all standard acting. The actress from "Almost Royal" was 1000 times better.
|
Almost Royal was a fucking joy to watch when it came out.
Poppy and Georgie. So good. |
Also if Borat 2 isn't even as good as Bruno I ain't watching it.
