Not that it would be bad or anything.

Heh. The idea came to me literally as I was writing the first part of the post (about Miz getting a main event role) so no great shakes if it's not a "good idea".

Ideally you'd get Bryan vs. Miz as thats what the story dictates...but I'm assuming that won't happen. I'm also assuming they're going with Brock/Berg which scuppers the Brock/Shane match. And this idea comes from the idea that they'd be treating us to AJ vs. HBK (the stories have one common thread in my head).

Personally I think Ambrose has taken a bit of step back from where he was earlier in 2016, where as Miz is on the rise so he'd be my priority for a feature match (plus, you pay off the Bryan stuff, and put the IC Title in a focused match - three for the price of one).

I do honestly think it would have been better once Ziggler had won the IC Title for him to put it on the line against Styles in an "All or Nothing" scenario for him and Styles to walk away with all the gold and all the focus as the male singles champion on the show.

I think that has to do more with the lack of bodies on Smackdown.

It progressively comes off as high school theater and a bunch of dudes that are afraid to get into a fight too. Austin or The Rock talking shit this is not. Hell, did Austin even do monologues? That was like Triple H's thing and even then it was pretty shit. But it was "his thing." Like, Triple H was a mustache-twirling narcissist who liked to get under his opponent's skin and remind them of the power he wielded by taking the platform. It doesn't really make sense for babyface Seth Rollins to do that.

Most of the time it accomplishes nothing that a screen saying "Seth Rollins is going to fight Kevin Owens tonight" would. This makes it redundant. This violates cardinal rules of television right there. You don't watch a character taking a shit unless it serves a purpose. It's frustrating, because WWE tries to move away from being professional wrestling, but as far as legitimate entertainment goes, they'd actually be on-point if they had a professional wrestling format.

And Vince might get the final say, but he can't write everything, and you can feel the writers' hands in the insults. Feels like the sort of barbs someone would write for Hannah Montana. Fucking weak sauce. You don't need swearing, but you at least need to be able to convey two people really don't like each other. It's so...performative, but with no real charisma.

When you are over, you are able to get away with a lot. The Rock could take a shit in the ring and get a standing ovation. During the Attitude era, wrestling was over. They could get away with a lot of stupid, wacky insulting stuff. People count the hits and not the misses. We remember Austin and the beer truck fondly, so we brush over "choppy, choppy your pee-pee." But they've kept the choppy-choppy stuff without any of the beer truck stuff and wonder why it isn't anywhere near as hot in 2017. It's because you aren't over and the misses are registering.

I'm not even talking huge stuff, but seemingly benign things that we are used to as wrestling fans that I bet turns potential new fans off the show. The big one that gets me is the backstage soliloquy. The camera just happens to be on Stephanie McMahon comfortably talking on the phone as a babyface walks into her traveling office to get eviscerated. Why are the cameras on her? Why doesn't she care? How low does the self-esteem of a wrestler have to be that they'd play along with that set-up? If the cameras are "invisible," then it's implied they all inhabit a fictional world, but as we all know, kayfabe is dead. Stephanie McMahon is the villain that hates Bayley and the hero that loves sick kids all in the same night, on the same show, in the same world.

I seriously wonder how many times Joe Fan turns over, remembering the buzz he's heard about wrestling, or to check out that Brock Lesnar guy he keeps hearing about, only to see something like this go down and respond emotionally with "This makes me uncomfortable." They're constantly crossing over the axis of their own continuity and doing shit which is clearly fake in a company that still depends on emotional investment by suspending disbelief. People believe The Rock can kick ass so he could get away with it; but if they don't believe you can kick ass, you're not going to get over by doing it first.

I think a balance is good. Also tougher with three hours vs two. That one SDL flew by where they booked basically only a few big matches, they all got time, and didn't need a lot of funny business.

But you can't do that every week and then be able to differentiate your PPVs.

Sounds like someone who thinks the WWE only has an audience of one. Meanwhile if you look at their demos, they are actually very strong with a wide variety of demos, therefore you need to have different types of segments that appeal to different people.

It's like SNL, which I used to watch religiously. I have hated it now for well over a decade, so I don't watch. But when I did, I didn't like every sketch. I would say on average I probably only ever liked half the sketches on a given show. But I still enjoyed it overall enough to keep watching. Once it got to where there was more bad than good, I found other things to do on Saturday nights. I couldn't imagine being a person watching the show every week only to complain online. That would make me such a loser. Not that you would know what that's like.

Turns out Jeffrey Dean Morgan is actually a nice person in real life. You can see this on Talking Dead, which appears on the same channel as Walking Dead (immediately after it, often advertised during the show). I don't think people who watch TD have a problem staying in the storyline that they want to see the good guys on TWD get revenge on him for killing their beloved characters.

It's pretty easy to comprehend the backstage stuff. The show is essentially an all access look at a sports entertainment company. Stephanie taking to talent is part of the show. The talent do it, because it's part of a script. The character of say Seth Rollins has to go into the meeting with Steph in front of the cameras, no different than they have to fight in front of the cameras. Most sports leagues nowadays have behind the scenes access shows that depict players get yelled at, praised, etc.

Serious thoughts:

* Big E should get his "Langston" back. He should call his fans "The Langston Nation."

* Neville needs a better name. He might as well be called "George." It could be Adrian, but it could also be anything else. Red Arrow Neville; Next Level Neville; Serious Neville Delirious; Geordie Lordie Neville; Mr. Neville; Sir Neville Tonedbottom. Anything.

* Cesaro can stay Cesaro though. Unless he calls himself "Tony Cesaro," because that would be awesome.

Holy fuck, you're telling me. I had to stop with the TNA one and instead listening to the 1997 Royal Rumble, because I find that more interesting. I have no doubt Prichard knows his shit, but he comes off like he's avoiding talking about anything. I actually liked listening to Conrad, but their arguments never solved anything. Prichard just goes "Yeah, whatever."

I'll force myself to listen to more, because I'm a masochist that loves wrestling, but I heard lots of good things about it and then found it a bit tedious. It's good to know where CyNick gets his gimmick from though. ;)

I just took a look at SDL this past week. #3 in people 18-49. #6 in women 18-49. #2 in men 18-49. #1 in people 18-34. #4 in women 12-34. #1 in men 12-34. #5 in people 25-54. Looks like #12 in people 50+.

If you count kids as a portion of the 12-34 demo, okay, but it's a small portion of that demo. And the oldest demo was SDLs worst. They do real well with adults overall.

Do the really carve up demographics like that? Is the overlap between 18-49 and 18-34 and 25-54 necessary?

Yes, demos have their own breakdowns and overlaps if you want to get really technically with the numbers. The most important one is always the 18-35 range since that is usually what advertisers care the most for.

Also can be a really great way to prove whatever positive point trying to be made in an argument.

Yeah, I mean I dont know if necessary is the way to look at it, but those are major measures. As you can see WWE does well in all of them. Unlike what some people try to have you believe.

I've always hated Neville's name.

I remember typing up a long post a year or so ago about his name that I was just going to quote it here as I'm feeling lazy at the moment but I can't find it.

Basically, I said that his name is not intimidating at all. If you're going to fight a guy and you find out his name is Neville, you would probably have a wee laugh to yourself and think that you've got the fight in the bag already.

Neville is a weak name. It's posh, dweeby and comical.

A few ideas here, but a complete name change would probably help add a lot to his current character, but maybe also a shortening of his name could help too. Maybe just "Nev" would work?

Maybe a name like "Arrow" or "The Arrow" would probably help too? Along with referring to himself as the king of the cruiserweights, have him refer to himself as "The Arrow" until eventually it becomes his name.

Anything would be better than "Neville" anyway.

Would this lead to a feud vs. former tag team partner Stephen Amell?

Former WWE and WCW wrestler Timothy Smith(AKA Rex King & Timothy) passed on Monday due to complications from kidney failure. He was 55 years old.

Smith is known to WWE fans for his Well Dunn tag team with Steve Doll. Smith last worked for WWE in 1995. Hewas named as one of the wrestlers in the class-action lawsuit filed by lawyer Konstantine Kyros back in July of 2016, alleging that WWE concealed the risks of traumatic brain injuries.

Evil Vito 01-11-2017 08:55 AM

Alex Riley was fantastic at the little things right off the bat. He knew where the camera was at all times and made sure to play to it at the right moments. Good talker, great look, all that. He looked like an absolute star when he turned face on The Miz and they gave him a badass entrance theme the next week.

But unfortunately the man was the drizzling shits in the ring. Even without the Cena stuff happening, he wasn't going to be prominently featured for very long when it became obvious he couldn't work.

That he didn't improve at all despite being assigned back to the Performance Center and having world-class instruction to learn from is really telling.

I doubt a wrestling segment will ever confuse me more than this. 6.5 years on and I still have no idea what the fuck they were going for.

Evil Vito 01-11-2017 08:59 AM

I assume the idea was that everybody simply gang up on Kaval and stand triumphantly in the ring. I'd even heard that maybe there was going to be a Genesis stable on SmackDown to counter Nexus on Raw.

Instead you have Eli Cottonwood disappearing after the slightest bit of resistance, Titus O'Neil completely no-selling the Player's Boot, and Alex Riley attacking Percy Watson only for Watson to get back up and just go back to kicking Kaval.

What the fuck?

A bit daft but he did make that announcement immediately after beating Dolph clean. Kane and Orton were the World Champions at that point, so not exactly the best time to try to go for one of those belts.

Would've been a bit more sensible if Kaval had a time limit or something to use his title shot.

Evil Vito 01-11-2017 10:09 AM

I also just remembered Kaval earning a spot on Team SmackDown for Bragging Rights only to immediately lose it to the re-debuting Tyler Reks. Eric Escobar was scheduled to be on that SmackDown team as well.

Holy hell SmackDown's roster was weak.

Big Vic 01-11-2017 11:28 AM

Why did Cena hate A-ri?

Nicky Fives 01-11-2017 01:19 PM

Kaval could have been great in WWE if he was booked half-ways decent, especially if you gave him a mouthpiece.... Didn't even had to be a good one, could have been Layla at the time.... "my man may be little, but he'll mess you up" type thing....

I think the actual point is this: anyone can look like a star by turning on Miz.

Favorite Ridley moment was when he tried to sandbag the Swagger-bomb. And Jack, with a little trouble, got him down anyway.

Legit knocking Ziggler unconscious with a reckless kick to the face during the opening minute of his PPV debut probably didn't to him any favours.

I heard it was something like offline Internet trolling. Riley simply had enough and it went Cents way. The same way Owen is blamed here instead of his tormentors. I cannot elborate cause Ripley said the time wasn't right.
